Is this the Year for 6000 passing yards?

I thought I would ponder this thought as we get ready for this season.

This line of thought would have been thought of as crazy or loony if even asked last year at this time.

However, Graham Harrell threw 5705 yards last season with 5 games where he did not even play the final quarter and a half.

So with this being the year for the push for the Heisman and for Leach to promote Harrell as the greatest QB for an NFL bid, I have to wonder.

What are the odds of Texas Tech putting up in a single season 6000 plus passing yards?

So I am asking the question.  Lets see how  and what the other fans think.

I think with the added attention Crab will gather, coupled with the loss of Amendola, 6,000 yards will be hard to come by. Also, add the fact that the OC games will have Harrell playing at the most 3 quarters (should all be blow outs), then the numbers become harder.

Actually

I think he has a great chance, due to an improved defense and more quality receivers to choose from, to pass for up to about 6300 yards. I doubt very seriously that anyone, even for Tech would EVER be able to do this again. So many things are falling into place for this to be possibly the most spectacular year for Harrell than anyone could have imagined.

Leach

I think Leach deep down likes putting up records to show that his system of offense is superior to anything else. So all of this makes me think that Leach will put Harrell in the position to throw for over 6000 yards.

If there was a 14th game last year, Harrell would’ve had it.

I think he gets it if Tech goes to K.C.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

My only concern

is that I think Leach has been changing the manner in which he calls games, which I view as very dangerous. His newfound proclivity for punting and running the ball does not please me one bit, although I believe I’m alone in that.

I think Harrell has a chance. BJ Symons came the closest. In his favor he had a better running back. But working against him was a tougher schedule and what I would consider a worse group of WRs, even with Wes Welker and Carlos Francis. I really think Michael Crabtree is above and beyond anything we’ve had in Lubbock, and now he has a year of experience with our (returning) starting quarterback. If Harrell can’t break the 6,000 this year, then it likely isn’t going to happen for some time.

Go register. Or else.

Natural progression

I see it as a natural progression of yards.

Every year, the Harrell has improved and his numbers get better. With only 295 more yards needed to really reach 6000 its not out of the question.

That is just roughly an extra 25 yards more a game or three more passes a game.

If you just throw in for the first 4 games, then its an extra 100 yards or an average of 10 more plays that Harrell will need to get there.

With Missouri not on the schedule who really hurt Tech’s average and has been the only real team to hurt the average over the years then I think Tech as a very very good chance.

Kansas State is slightly better than Baylor and will be lucky and I mean lucky to get 4 or 5 wins this season.

Kansas had the easiest schedule on God’s green earth last year. What would Tech look like if they did not have to Play both OU and Texas? Kansas will not be the powerhouse they are being projected. The pure fact that they do not have any quality replacements for their losses on the OL and did not recruit well for the OL is a good starting point here. The Fact that Kansas beat an over ranked ACC seemed to shock the AP and other media kiss ups on the East Coast. But it did not suprise me that much. Lack in depth in running back and WR will also cost Kansas a game or two. Expect a 6-6 or 7-4 here with Tech bashing Kansas by a good 30+.

Nebraska will be the dark horse this year because of the coaching changes. There has been no noise or any real assessments being made and with several closed practices not much is getting out right now. I will look forward to the comprehensive ESPN preview on the 25th. But I suspect that Nebraska will be hard pressed to do better than 6-6 this season especially with a below average recruiting season. The Focus in Nebraska is Linemen and lots of them. They did pick up a few receievers and one rather slow RB. So I do not expect much in the way of improvement in Nebraska this season but do expect a new return to the Nebraska of old running game that kept Nebraska in the top 10. They are gearing up for an offensive running program, but I do not see it happening this season with the current personnel they have.

Texas will be Texas. The question from Austin is can they get all their all stars to play like All stars or just play hard enough to get a win as ugly as it has been. I expect that Texas will lose 3 games this season. With one to our Red Raiders because Texas has problems under a West Texas sky.

OU will have to find a RB to replace their loss. None are of the quality of petterson. Their promotion of Murry is not going to cut it. Murry is a good 2 yard average below Peterson.
But OU is getting plenty of Love this year with all 12 games being televised.

Baylor and Texas A&M are stagnant and expect the same results this year as last.

Get your guns up!

6,000 yards is highly probable if Tech plays in the Big 12 championship. Lots of things have to turn our way to get there, but it is a real possibility that the Red Raiders can run the table this year. Look for Morris or Lewis to have a big year opposite Crabtree. I also look for Crabtree to have another great year. He’s just too good to be shut down for an entire game. My fingers are crossed, hope to see you all in Miami!
