Per LAJ's Don Williams, Texas Tech is ranked #14 and this is Captain Leach's response:

"Part of it's because I've been gone quite a bit,'' Leach said, "but I've successfully managed to ignore what we're ranked in most of the polls, other than conversations I overhear periodically. I don't really have reaction. Hallelujah. Either way, (the ranking's) not going to change anything. I guess 14th is as good as anywhere.''

I asked Mike Leach whether Jeffers could play this season, and Leach said: "Harrison hasn't been here as much during the summer as some of the others, so I don't know what kind of shape he's in. My suspicion would be that some time getting in shape is going to be in order (for him).''

Also of note is that Joey Fowler, who was here during the spring semester, is rehabbing a shoulder injury.

ESPN Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin ranks the Big 12 receivers and Mr. Crabtree checks in at #1, while Detron Lewis is at #9. Based on performance alone, I might have switched out Eric Morris for Detron Lewis, although I will readily admit that Lewis has more natural ability than Morris. Still, Morris was pretty good last year 75 for 767 yards and 9 touchdowns.

ESPN's Mark Schlabach ranks the most clutch players for 2008 and Tim Griffin ranks the most clutch players in Big 12 History and Graham Harrell makes both lists.

Schlabach on Harrell:

8. Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech The senior led an improbable comeback in a 31-28 win over Virginia in the Gator Bowl last season. Coach Mike Leach is hoping the Red Raiders don't have to come from behind very often in 2008.

Griffin on Harrell:

* Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell (2006-present) Has a knack for bowl comebacks, leading the Red Raiders back from double-digit fourth-quarter deficits in the last two seasons. Included was a 24-point fourth-quarter comeback against Minnesota in the 2006 Insight Bowl.

I'm not so sure it is Harrell

as much as it is the offensive scheme you run.

When you pass all the time, as y’all do in the Air Raid, it isn’t hard to comeback.

Besides, it isn’t like Minnesota had a good defense. They built their first half lead by running the ball and taking advantage of Tech mistakes.

As for the comeback against Virginia, well, the refs conveniently didn’t call holding against anyone blocking Chris Long in the 4th quarter. Funny how the Virginia pass rush just suddenly disappeared.

I don’t think Harrell is a clutch performer, at least not in the way they do. Where was the comeback against texas? Oklahoma State? Missouri? Colorado? He seems to be receiving a lot of credit for performances in bowl games against marginal opposition, not good teams.

He wasn’t bad against Texas or Oklahoma State. He put up over 40 points in each game; the defense (and Austin officiating) lost those two games.

If he’s not better than other Tech quarterbacks, why does he have two of Leach’s five bowl wins in eight years? It takes mental stamina to come back from 31 down in 20 minutes and 17 in three.

And how did Virginia’s pass rush “suddenly disappear” in the fourth quarter? Chris Long didn’t have a sack all day, and two iffy safeties aside, I don’t recall a ton of pressure on Harrell throughout the game.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.
