Big 12 Roundtable: Preseason Edition

Thanks to Matt at Crimson and Cream Machine for getting the first Big 12 roundtable up and running. Here's my answers to his questions.

  1. There has been lots of talk this pre-season about scheduling. Colorado has arguably the strongest schedule but who do you think has the weakest and which cream puff on your team’s schedule do you wish wasn’t there?

I think a pretty solid argument could be made that it's Texas Tech's non-conference schedule, although I'll make two quick points: 1) Eastern Washington and Massachusetts aren't pushovers, they are relatively high ranked FCS teams, UMass is #5 and Eastern Washington is #8; 2) EWU was a replacement for Tulsa that bailed on Texas Tech.

    Still, it's Texas Tech. Guilty.

As far as the team that I wish wasn't there, give me EWU because I wish Texas Tech still had Tulsa, I think that would have been a pretty intriguing game as both teams an offensively gifted, would have been a nice test for the Texas Tech defense.

  2. As a whole the Big 12 has the best quarterbacks in the country. Make a case for your quarterback being one of the conference’s top signal callers and tell us which other conference quarterback you would pick to replace him if you had to.

Well, aside from Graham Harrell leading the nation in total offense (individually) and passing offense (as a team). Not to mention leading the Big 12 in yards per game at 438.8, touchdowns and completion percentage. Harrell only trailed Sam Bradford in overall passing rating, however, Harrell did have 372 more attempts than Bradford, which makes Harrell's 157.31 that much more impressive, plus the offense's complete reliance on the quarterback.

Another signal caller . . . I'm tempted to pick Daniel, but I'm going to go with Bradford, who has a more typical quarterback's body and I'd have him for three years.

  3. Going into the season which unit for your team are you most confident in, offense or defense?

My confidence is growing in the defense as the fall practices continue, but without question, it's the offense. This may be a tough question for most programs, it's not at Texas Tech.

  4. Who is the new guy on you squad that will be a household name among your fan base before the season ends.

I'll give both an offensive and a defensive player:

Offense: Detron Lewis did see some time last year, however, he was the primary back-up to Danny Amendola, which means that his time on the field was somewhat limited. Not this year. Lewis will be an all-conference performer should match, but will probably surpass, Amendola's numbers. Lewis is a Mr. Crabtree starter-kit and they're both going to be anchored on that right side, which will be a tough matchup for most teams.

Defense: I believe that the coaches are determined to get Brandon Sesay on the field, in some form or fashion. Recruited to Texas Tech as a defensive end, he has the size (6'6"/280) to play defensive tackle an the coaching staff is looking to get him on the field, whether it be at end or tackle. Sesay is going to have a baptism by fire for the first 4 weeks of the season and if he performs, he's going to see a lot of time in conference play.

  5. Prediction time! Tell us how the north and south divisions will wind up.

    South
    1. Oklahoma
    2. Texas Tech
    3. Texas
    4. Texas A&M
    5. Oklahoma State
    6. Baylor

    North
    1. Missouri
    2. Kansas
    3. Colorado
    4. Nebraska
    5. Kansas State
    6. Iowa State

Great Post

I like how you have the intellectual honesty to pick tech 2nd on your South poll. I have been burned too many times. I was at that OSU game last year and had my heart ripped out. I, like you, do like Bradford, but there’s something to be said about being a true winner vis a vis Chase Daniel.

Mike Leach

knows that if Texas Tech can improve defensively, the offense will ultimately get more plays during a game. More plays=more yards. With the run improvement that we expect from the team, there may be less plays geared to the pass. But, with the more explosive and improved receivers, more YPA is a good possibility, meaning 6000 IS within reach, even if we get more than 1K rushing. There are those that argue that Tech’s passing, and, untimately, Tech is a joke. Well, we hope they and many more keep that thought as the Red Raiders surge to an undefeated regular season and ths BCS championship game. They are right, everyone is right, Tech COULD falter. Some other year, but not this one. This team is focused on winning each game, one at a time, then preparing for the next game. No looking ahead and anticipating. They saw what happened to Michigan last year and are aware that they MUST be focused at all times to prevent that from happening to them, especially in the lower tier games, in & out of this conference. It will not be easy, but I feel better this year about their chances than I have for over 50 years. You young punks can’t come close to really understanding the significance of the quality of this year’s team, compared to all those years in the past. If you are on board, be there completely, win or lose, just as I have been, am and will be. And those idiots from atm that horn in on this blog, they can just stick it where the sun doesn’t shine for all I care. And Seth, if you say you believe in this team, quit crab shuffling (play on words, yuk, yuk) and stick behind them. Don’t sway or allow others to influence you. This is OUR team. GO TECH!

I could have sworn I commented to this

but here goes again.

Please don’t confuse me trying to be a realist with my fandom. I love my Red Raiders, but if I want to be taken seriously (I don’t know by who, but I guess that’s beside the point), then I have to try and call it like I see it.

If I write something that perceived to be negative about Texas Tech, it’s really intended to be an exercise in taking a look at what is wrong rather than not believing in this team (identifying a problem so that it can be fixed). Again, trying to be a realist and not necessarily wishy-washy. Although this is a blog solely about Texas Tech, and although I consider myself to be a huge fan, I think it’s important to also be realistic about where this team is right now.

I hope like hell I’m wrong about where this team finishes and they exceed my expectations.

Go Raiders . . .

Seth keep on being objective

Seth you are objective that’s what makes DTN a great Blog. The Raiders are heading into a tough campaign against great opponents. We can all expect some adversity. Its a violent, rowdy spectacle played out in hostile venues. A sport where every event has 22 folks trying disconnect their opponents scheme. We love the Raiders but let’s get a reality check our opponents are just as motivated. The Raiders have an opportunity to leap into the fore front of the NCAA stage prove all the naysayers wrong and breakout from under the UT & OU shadow. I applaud the team grit just to claw their way onto the national scene. It’s going to be another fun season.
