Post-Mortem: Eastern Washington v. Texas Tech
I've had the chance to consider Saturday night's win over Eastern Washington and after writing the defensive drive chart and the offensive drive chart I had some meandering thoughts that at the time weren't really connected, but maybe now I can draw some conclusions.
- EWU's first touchdown, Drive #6, started at Texas Tech's own 7, that one hell of a gift by the Texas Tech offense. I'm not saying that we shouldn't count this touchdown, but EWU was rewarded and the Texas Tech defense punished for a poorly thrown Harrell pass that resulted in a EWU interception.
- EWU's 2nd and 3rd touchdown were legitimate. Much credit goes to EWU for nicely performed drives.
- It should also be pointed out that Texas Tech's 1st, 9th and 12th drives all started in and around the EWU 30 yard line and only scored on the 1st drive. That's some pretty sweet field position and I'm mentioning those drives because those could also be looked at gifts, but we'll look at them as good defensive plays. I think it's also important to note that the 9th drive was the one where Harrell tried to go for it on 4th and 2 (I think we should have given the ball to Crawford, Woods or Batch) and the 12th drive was the missed Carona field goal.
- Peter mentioned this in his Big 12 Roundup, that per play, Texas Tech only allowed 4.3 yards per play, which is really pretty good. As much flack that the Texas Tech defense has received, it should certainly be pointed out that the defense wasn't that bad. EWU had 5.4 yards per passing attempt, which is pretty darn poor and means that EWU was moving more horizontally than vertically. Just for comparison purposes, Graham Harrell had a 9.2 yards per passing attempt, which is off the charts. I think that anything over 8 is good, but once you get into something over 9, then you're really getting the ball down the field. More simply, I think that the 341 passing yards is overrated a bit. Yes, it would be more simple to request that the Texas Tech defense just stop EWU, but this is not an inept offense and I think they would have some success against most, if not all, BCS teams.
- I don't want to get on any sort of moral argument about what's right and what's wrong, but we've talked about the mental errors and how 169 penalty yards is just too much, but how do these mental errors compare to UT's Lamarr Houston getting arrested for DWI early Sunday morning. Houston is now out at least a game and both instances are obvious lapses in judgment that has the potential to affect the team in a negative manner, it's the degree of the error that's the difference. I think what I'm trying to say here is that there's no question Houston's error in judgment is going to affect the team, although I'm not sure that voters in the various polls will be affected by his actions, but voters will consider the penalties for Texas Tech. Houston's actions will, at least for one game, affect his team, possibly more. Meanwhile, Texas Tech will certainly get criticized, and rightfully so, for the number of penalties and those penalties certainly had an effect on Saturday night's game, but there shouldn't be any long-term effect on the team and it's a correctable problem. (Ed Note: I may be way off base here, too much time to think about a football game.)
- Does Texas Tech still deserved to be ranked in the Top 25? In Kyle's initial week 2 thoughts, he doesn't have Texas Tech in his top 18 and I'm currently trying to take a look at each of these 18 teams and asking myself if each of these 18 teams had a better performance than Texas Tech. Kyle readily admits that Georgia didn't play up to it's #1 ranking against Georgia Southern and he's dropped them 3 spots. Meanwhile, he had Texas Tech at #22 to begin the season and I'm curious if Kyle drops Texas Tech completely for not meeting expectations. I respect Kyle's rankings, which is why I've mentioned this and I think it's a good question to ask, to at least make you go through the exercise as to whether or not a 25 point win against a FCS opponent should knock you down a few spots. I think the most difficult thing here is that it's so dang hard gauge highly ranked FCS teams relative to their lower ranked BCS opponents. I'm convinced that EWU isn't a bad team (in fact I have much respect for the Eagles) and they've got a quarterback and receiver that quite a few BCS teams would love to have. What I am asking is how much do we discount Texas Tech's performance because EWU is a FCS team? LSU beat #1 Appalachian State by 28, West Virginia beat #19 Villanova by 27, and Georgia beat #17 Georgia Southern by 24. And although North Carolina isn't ranked (they did receive some votes in all polls) they only managed a 8 point win against #10 McNeese State. Texas Tech's 25 point win over #9 Eastern Washington doesn't seem that bad in comparison to some of the better FCS teams.
I'd love your thoughts and comments as well.

Michigan would've killed for a 25 point win over App State
And putting it into perspective with how other highly ranked FCS teams did against their FBS opponents certainly takes some of the sting off of our performance Saturday. Thanks for that.
Some other FCS scores
BYU 41-17 over Northern Iowa (#4 FCS)
Maryland 14-7 over Delaware (#8 FCS)
Arkansas 28-24 over Western Illinois (#22 FCS)
Absolutely,
the FCS doesn’t play bad football. I have no doubt that EWU is better than North Texas, but I have no way to prove it because there’s really no comparison.
Go Raiders . . .
Yes, and I'm not sure how many of those
highly ranked BCS teams had as many mental errors as Texas Tech did. Another thing to consider as well.
Go Raiders . . .
When the voters, none of whom got to watch the game, see the box score, they’ll see the 61 pass attempts by Nichols and only a 59% completion rating, their 1-yard-per-carry rushing average, and the 4.3 yards-per-play average, and realize that the Tech defense didn’t play that poorly, after all.
I think, by now, most people realize that the top FCS teams are better than half the FBS teams. It’s amazing that with their football programs, they can’t get bigger stadiums built and move up. Earning close to $1,000,000 a year from BCS opponents would seem to add up quickly. All they need is an average attendance of 15,000, and a school like UMass could get it, having 20,000 undergrads and being in Amherst and close to Springfield.
Better to have all those mental errors in week one than week six, anyway.
After all is said and done, more is said than done.
Post Mortem.. post..
.. From an Earlier post – It was great the defense got 3 interceptions and 3 sacks.( arguably the deciding factors.) The third side of the game looks to be rusty or at least unpracticed i.e. special teams – penalties, a kick blocked on extra point attempt (again a flash of excellence by Taylor Charbonett to block their FG attempt) but then 2 x flat missed kicks and a poor punt. And if I am not mistaken 2 or 3 punt returns for over 15 yards by EWU?? – ( Extra comment for this post) So we gave up over 1.5 + football fields in penalties – yikes! Yes I have read for years how we don’t like to reign in aggressive fast play. Still I have to wonder – listened to the game and I am pretty sure we committed 4 – 5 fouls on special teams. Finally a flat A%#$ turnover by a senior returner on a punt? That’s not our identity. TTU is noted for Excellent attention to detail when the other team is pressing for an advantage. Especially in the transition game. More special teams energy appears to be in order.
Then the 4.3 yards a play averaged by EWU on 61 passing attempt (right? ) …looks like we were playing defense pretty well. Note to self (and fellow Pirates) – Raider Defense is getting it done. And in the post game interviews by B Duncan" .. " not quite what we want ..just yet..". Nevada may get mugged by the defense next week. No doubt the Eagles team was a "sleeper" quality opponent and # 9 in the FCS to boot. Can’t agree more with the DTN thread that a tune up, wake up and or gut check is good right now. I.e. don’t read your press clipping they are written by people who have way too much time on their hands like a certain DMN "what ever" sports writer. We can expect that Coaching now gets pretty directive and pointed.
Thoughts
It’s hard to say in any game how it would have ended up had any single event not occurred because the game changes from that point forward. But, by my count, penalties resulted in at least a 10 point swing, maybe more.
Penalties:
It wasn’t just the number of penalties that hurt, it was the untimeliness of several of the penalties. On EWU’s first scoring drive, the Tech D held them on 1st & 2nd down, but had a penalty during the 2nd down, giving EWU 1st & goal at the 4. They may have scored anyway, but it changed from a passing down to a run-run situation for a TD. A pass interference call extended a drive stalled at 3rd and 10 that resulted in EWU’s 3rd TD (drive 12). Tech also gave them great field position through a halo violation that set up the 2nd touchdown. And, basically taking points off the board, a false start and an offesive pass interference moved Tech from 1st and 10 at the EWU 13 out of scoring position (missed 47 yrd field goal).
Ranking:
Generally speaking, teams don’t drop much in ranking if they win, regardless of the “quality” of their play that week or the margin of victory over a poor opponent. Good teams find ways to win, even when they don’t bring their A game. That is rewarded and shows depth and the ability to overcome adversity. I don’t expect Tech to be punished by the pollsters for winning by 25 points with solid defensive play.
Like djollie111 pointed out, Michigan would have killed for a 25 point win over App St last year (and Lloyd Carr might have kept hs job). EWU was given a number of gifts (above) that they took advantage of. Kudos to them. Tech did a good job of stopping them the rest of the game.
Crab-who?
I missed the game for my daughter’s birthday party, so I don’t know if EWU had 2 DBs and an orangatan on on MC’s back, but on paper his performance was pretty mediocre. I was glad to see that we ran the ball 25 times (good call Seth) for over 100 yards.
Needless to say, Tech did not get its emotions under control enough to focus. That is what needs to improve most. Hopefully they have gotten the first game jitters and anxiety from the preseason hype out of their system. Let’s just hope they learn to play fired up but not loose their heads. Overall, I think they probably earned a B-.
they had crab double and triple covered all night. the times he was in single, he made them pay, but that wasn’t often. The bigger thing with crabs was that he was involved in many, many blocks downfield. A few true pancakes. Both of our wides (britton included) were blocking better than they were getting open.
Good to here
that the receivers were doing more than just catching passes. I expected that Crabtree would see heavy coverage all year and have to find other ways to contribute. As long as the offense can continue to make defenses pay when they drop 8 into coverage and/or double up Crabtree, Tech should do well.
Wake up call
This will likely serve as a wakeup call. While we are talented, we aren’t like USC where we can just show up and win the game in pre-game warmups. We don’t intimidate anyone (offense is all finesse, defense is, well, a work in progress), so we have to work all game long.
I’m anxious to see how the Nevada game plays out. They racked up a boat load of rushing yards Saturday, so the game will have a different tone than the EWU game. If Tech can continue to get the Britton, Morris and the RBs heavily involved that will make life easier. I’m thrilled they didn’t try to force things to Crabtree just to do it. He will probably see a significant drop off in his numbers this year due to the success of 07, but that’s fine. Win. Just win.
Ouch my stomach hurts
i was so pumped going into the game thinking like the rest of the tech fans. This is going to be a good showcase for our stars to show what they have and for the most part they did about 1/2 the time they were on the field. After a couple of days to read around and see what others are thinking also, i agree with most people and that this game will be a blessing. Kinda like the OSU game last year. Or atleas that is what i am hoping as a fan that it will be. I did enjoy the game. The first play for the defense an interception. comeon that was great how could you start the year off any better for any defense…..maybe keep that going for the entire game…iam also glad to see our running backs playing well…and the one return by wall deep in the inzone i was nervous based on his playing from last year i think wall has improved as a corner back….and crabtree had his hands full all night…i don’t think i noticed him not being double teamed….but all and all a win is still a win and the students that had “i had a dream 11-0” still have a dream like all the rest of us….GO TECH!!!!!
