OT: Record Rainfall Flooding Lubbock

I'm here in Lubbock, and a state of emergency has been declared as the rainfall total for TODAY has surpassed 6.5 inches, shattering the single day rainfall record.  I've been here almost 6 years and have never seen it like this before.  Playa lakes are full and now merging together, and I'm sure all of you know the drainage system in Lubbock is not designed to handle this.  Emergency crews are sandbagging around homes, and roads have been closed.  There have been several vehicles disabled due to high water.

Frenship, Lubbock, and Cooper ISD's have cancelled classes tomorrow.  Rain is expected to continue through the night and a flood warning has been issued.

So, if you're coming in town for the game, be careful and be aware that it is a mess up here.  You might want to wait until Saturday morning to come into town.  Rain is forecasted for the game too, so BRING YOUR PONCHOS!  No umbrellas allowed.

Tech canceled classes for tomorrow already.

7.8 inches in 24 hours

according to the NWS in Lubbock. That’s just obscene. Previous record was 5.82 inches. Average for a year in Lubbock is 18.69 inches. We’re up to 23.8 inches so far for 2008.

flooding

Yea, i remember it raining a lot before, but never this much, all at once. Luckily though, it seems to have stopped. has anyone here seen the pictures of Jones AT&T Stadium???? the pump system broke and there was a little lake in Raider Crater this morning:

Luckily though, the lubbock city fire dept is helping Tech drain the field. i just hope that they fix the pump system in time for the game, in case it rains again on Saturday.

Pumps

It’s my understanding that the pumps did not fail. What failed was the city lines. The pumps drain into a city line (line F) and that line was flooded and was pushing all the water back at the drains and pumps in the Jones. The crew simply turned the pumps off because they would’ve burned out, an potentially flooded more water into the Jones.

Props to the Lubbock Fire Department for assisting with the drainage.
