Recruiting On The High Seas: Progress
Last week, I took a look at both the offense and defense and the recruits' average star rating, while ayleein greatly expanded on my thoughts (internet chest-bump). Having not wasted enough time, I thought I'd go ahead and give everyone a complete picture of the job that I think Captain Mike Leach has done recruiting at Texas Tech. Again, recruiting rankings are not the final say in team success, but I do think they are somewhat accurate and I thought it was a little tough to gauge how Texas Tech's program has progressed without taking a look since the recruiting rankings first began, at least for the Rivals.com network.
Some explanation is in order as well, the delta is the difference between 2003 and 2002, 2004 and 2003, etc. This is just to have somewhat of an idea if there's any sort of improvement.
With that being said, I'll let the numbers speak for themselves and would love any additional comments, questions or observations.

It is obvious,
even without crunching the numbers, that the recruiting offensively has improved by a count of 3-1 over the defensive improvement. As it is, the Offense’s delta is +1.08. The defense’s delta is +0.32. Big difference, and I feel we still need to improve by a delta over the next couple of years of at least +0.5 to +1.0 on the offense and by a delta of at least +2.0 to +2.5 on the defense. Not an easy chore, but if we want to continue to compete for conference and national titles, we MUST improve our recruitment process. A lot of this can probably be helped along by the complete commitment of Coach Leach to the program, re. signing a contract ASAP! The recruits are more aware than ever of where a program that is pursuing them are in relation to the other programs that are competing for their signatures. It is time this program stood out as one that is not only exciting, but stable and moving forward, not shakey, standing pat or digressing.

a more important thing to note is the decreasing number of 2* players recruiting by the staff. We went from a few risky 4 stars and a diet of 2 and 3 stars to a group of first-choice 4*’s, a steady diet of 3*’s and a few hand-picked 2* players.
So long as Leach stays (and hopefully whoever his replacement is will be a better recruiter or at least put together a solid recruiting staff like Leach has), I think you’ll see more years like 2008 and 2009 (mostly 3*’s with a few 4’s and one or two 2’s) than years like 2004 (where we signed 15 2* players). We’ve already been getting looks by a few 5*’s, I think that we’ll actually pick one up in the next 2-3 years.
