Good Luck!
Hope you have a great game in the Cotton Bowl!
Best of luck today, gents
Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Missouri didn’t exactly do the conference proud by either A) losing or B) winning in ugly, maddening, frustrating fashion.
Last year’s Cotton Bowl remains one of my finest memories. Hopefully yall have some of your own in store today.

Looks like a lot of our DTNers were able to make the game. I had access to tickets from different sources, but decided to pass on the in-person experience to enjoy it in the media room.
Me, too. I'm addicted to instant replay....
although I sometimes miss that big crowd experience. If there had been any good seats left by the time the general public got access, it might have been different. HD beats the hell out of the nose-bleed end zone view.

Okay
time to take momentum back. We had them stopped and couldn’t execute. Need to tighten up tackling. The fake punt was massive.
Ole Miss has had the ball for 11 of the first 15…and Snead is sharp. 7-10 for 106. The drops can’t continue, either. This is not what we are used to…bad execution so far.
Our short passing game/ball control is missing in action so far

by Red Raider in South GA on Jan 2, 2009 2:58 PM CST reply actions
Okay
I’m back off the ledge. Here’s the only good news…Tech’s offense, without a ton of pressure, has kept the game close. If, and only if, Harrell can pull his head out, we can roll. The defense just needs to tackle. They are in position almost every play, but they can’t make the tackle.
Ole Miss is exactly what an 8-4 team looks like. Good on some plays, ordinary on others. It’s time for Tech to start looking like an 11-1 team. Excellent on many plays, very good on most.
That's what I've been saying.
They are pinning their ears back on every play. Is Leach afraid of the SEC defense?
Texas Tech: No. 1 in football graduation rates among NCAA Div-1 public universities
by TT_ on Jan 2, 2009 3:07 PM CST up reply actions
Leach’s biggest flaw is his belief in his brain. He thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. He will try to force our offense to be successful – even when it’s obvious the guys are off. Just like today. He’s a terrible in-game admininstrator and tactician.
Fox is showing itself to be a second rate sports network. Either that or the are letting their interns train on today’s game.
by Red Raider in South GA on Jan 2, 2009 3:05 PM CST reply actions
The only thing we can hope for at this point is that this is a typical bowl game for us – coast for 2+ quarters before getting serious. But that is wishful thinking in the extreme.
I’m not giving up, but I’m getting myself mentally prepared for a huge letdown, a “Typical Tech”. Oh God, I can just hear the Horns and the SEC and just about the whole country.
Texas Tech: No. 1 in football graduation rates among NCAA Div-1 public universities
I’ll say this…if Leach can’t get this one turned around for a win, we should yank that extension right off the table ; )
Maybe he will go to OU when Stoops goes to Denver.

…and we will start the second half with only one starter returning in the secondary. Wall, McBath are out…Reed never got in the game. Very solid.
Last attempt at being hopeful
- McNeil makes some adjustments that makes them at least struggle a little on offense (although making tackles is hardly an adjustment).
- Leach makes their D play honest by running the ball occasionally, getting outside to stop that blitzing up the middle.
- The team wakes up like against Baylor. Remember we actually did better on O when Crabs left that game. That’s what killed Ok St the other day, sticking with starters that were hurt instead of someone else at 100%.
- Harrel has to wake up.

This game, to me, was the true measure of our year. To lose, and to lose in this fashion, pretty much makes me think that the Nov 1 and Nov 8 games were smoke and mirrors…Maybe the reality is that the real Tech team was the one we saw vs. Nevada, Baylor, A&M, Nebraska…tough to tell.

It just goes to show
You can lose to anyone if you don’t bring your game. It is clear Ole Miss’ coaches were more prepared and had their players more motivated. Texas Tech might be better on paper, but they didn’t play like they were better today. Kind of unfortunate. Leach is going to have to take a lot of heat for this one, to be fair.
by TheElusiveShadow on Jan 2, 2009 4:41 PM CST reply actions
11-2
And completely humiliated in both losses. This was a paper lion. I’m pissed at myself for being sucked into this team more than I am the performance. The performance tonight could almost be predicted, couldn’t it? I mean, highly ranked (uh-oh), highly publicized (uh-oh), coach won’t sign extension (uh-oh), Harrell and Crabtree do the awards show circuit (uh-oh)….against a well coached (uh-oh) and fired up (uh-oh) team. Disaster in waiting becomes disaster in reality. Leach, kiss my ass.
did you see the stat where it said Mississippi averages 399 yds a game in total offense?
and they’ve over 500 yds for the game so far?
just goes to show that all of the media hype over Ruffin McNeill was just that, hype, and the defense is still average.

with the play selection, it looks like we are trying to run time off the clock.
Maybe that is the best defense we have . . . .
as predictable as the day is long
tech had no reason to care about this game
they could have lost three more games and they would have been in the cotton bowl
I don't think y'all ever recovered from the Oklahoma game
the Baylor game showed signs of this, b/c y’all had to come back to win that one.
Having the media publically fellate you for the last month didn’t help the team.
I think the flaws of Leach really came through the last three games. OU was more prepared, Baylor executed better, and Ole Miss was both. I’m going to take a few days to ponder this season and if we are REALLY a legit 11-2 team. There is the obvious answer, yes. We won 11. But does that make us elite? No more so than it made Hawaii a legit 12-0 last year, is where my mind is as of right now.
an 11-2 record makes you an 11 win team
Are you elite? Hell no. “Elite” teams don’t lose in the manner y’all did to Oklahoma, or in the manner you lost to Mississippi today.
That isn’t an insult, b/c very, very few teams are actually “elite”; that is why you have to strive so hard to join that group.
Some of the game you can’t blame on Leach, imo. He wasn’t out there dropping passes, he wasn’t the one failing to execute. However, some things he does need to take responsibility for, like the QB sneak call on 4th and 4.
The question Tech fans need to ask themselves is, “Can Mike Leach get us to the level where we are a consistently elite program?” I’m not sure if the answer to that question is yes. But, the flip side is that I don’t know if there is anyone else out there right now who can do a better job at Tech than Leach does.
Cotton Bowl: A game of two coaches
The level of preparation was the difference in the game today. While Tech looked like an ‘elite’ but rusty team, Ole’ Miss looked like an ‘average’ but well oiled machine. Sort of like comparing a rusty Lexus with may be a Toyota Corrolla. Yet in the end it comes down to the commitment of two coaches. One coach (ours) went on a holiday vacation visiting presentation ceremonies and begging for coaching jobs at schools that have performed inferior to Tech in the recent times and spent time haggling over a few million dollars of compensation for a job in which he has never taken the team to a BCS bowl or even won the Big XII ever. On the other hand was Huston Nutt, who prepared his team, got them motivated and did more with less today. Congrats to Ole’ Miss. Tech remains same old Tech. Crappy defense and an opportunistic coach ready to ditch the ship whenever his agent finds a chance. If we have to dish out the kind of money that he is asking, we can actually get a coach who will take us to a BCS bowl or win the division once in a while for that money.
May be I am griping because it was frustrating to see Tech play today and I hope I am wrong, but it just seems so obvious to me at this point.
Well all
I watched the game with my brother. Very disappointing. I think all the outside stuff (awards, speaches, haggling over a contract extension) pluss Harrell’s & Crab’s injuries contributed to this poor showing. I really don’t think the team was focused or properly prepared or encouraged the way they should have been. Ole Miss is a good, not great, team. Tech simply did not play up to their potential, while Ole Miss played above their’s. Again, as others have said, the coaches were to blame for this, especially Leach, who allowed his ego and greed destroy any chemistry this team had garnered during the season. As a matter of fact, I think because his contract negotiations carried on all season, he simply was not focused on driving this team to the level it should have been. They SHOULD have averaged over 50 points/game and gone undefeated, but with distracted leadership, it just did not happen.
TTpilk
You are correct, also
about this type of performance losing us any praise or esteem that could be the stepping stones for achieving the level of performance and respect we desire from the rest of the football world. Personally, I don’t think Leach deserves the type raise that was offered, not until he takes us to a Big-12 title and a BCS berth and win. I say pull the offer and let him leave. I would much rather have someone coaching here that WANTS to be here and LOVES being here. Leach obviously does not. Our chances of obtaining the type recruits the big boys get just flew oveer the cuckoo’s nest….and he can take his pirate sword and stick it up his (where the sun don’t shine place).
TTpilk
As far as perception goes, this game set Tech back a long way. We were 11-1 and many didn’t take us seriously. When is the last time a BCS conference team went 11-1 and wasn’t taken seriously? Exactly. It just doesn’t happen.
Couple that with a nasty showing in the bowl game and Tech has a mountain to climb, yet again, in the area of perceptions. We will have to go 11-1 and win a division AND a major bowl to be taken as a player on the national landscape. This game was huge. HUGE. And we completely caved in. Sure, it was a great season in our eyes. But the rest of the conference, especially the south, has no real reason to fear Tech. This was supposed to be our best season in decades. And in many ways it was. But the 1-2 finish does nothing but kill any perceived respect we’d gained over the course of the season. What makes it worse is we lost to a team we should have demolished. Our players weren’t focused. Thanks, coach Leach. Great job the first 10 weeks of the year. Truly a great run. But that stumbling, bumbling finish knocked that sweet taste right out of our mouths. Couple that with the fact that you don’t seem interested in being a Red Raider makes it even more difficult to be on your side right now. I hope you don’t sign that extension. I want you to really earn it next year. Prove to me 11 wins wasn’t a fluke. Prove you can get this team up for a day game away from home. Prove you can play for a conference championship. Prove you can get us to the BCS. You haven’t done it in 9 years.
bama...
well… if you look at what happened to bama…
they lost one game to the current national title contender… and then lost a bowl game they shouldn’t have…. pretty badly…
we lost one game to the current national title contender… and the lost a bowl game we shouldn’t have… pretty badly…
shame that people will say we were a fluke and not bama…
Wreck 'Em Tech!
J.T.H.
I have been thinking the same think about the coaching. In both of our humiliating losses, I came away with the impression that we were unprepared on both sides of the ball. We may be limited in talent on the defensive side, but not as limited as we appeared. On offfense, lack of talent hardly seems an excuse at all.
Now I really understand why Houston Nutt gets so much respect. He did this to us with a team that won just three games last year. That is a telling fact.

My tailgate was a success.. That’s about the hightligh of this weekend. I don’t know what to say at this point. I was so pro-Leach.. I still am “I think”. What does it take to get a team back into the swing of things after a loss like Oklahoma.
