Post Game Thoughts: Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss
I'm not going to do the typical write-up for the game or link to all of the game stories. There's just too many and there's not enough time.
Putting Faces With Names:
I had the fortune of meeting both kayakyakr and djollie111 before the game and it was great to put faces with names. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to meet anyone else, but one of my goals this next football season is to have a much more organized meeting of DTN'ers. I intend on going to the spring game and hopefully we can all get together before a game next fall. More than anything I want to have the opportunity to personally thank each and every one of you for reading and to shake your hand. We'll get it done.
I'm Tired:
Perhaps me being tired is more a direct correlation between me blogging about my team and the emotional highs and lows that go along with being a fan. I have this prevailing thought that it affects me because, I feel like I have to have something to say, whether it be good or bad about any particular game or event. I realize that this comes with the territory of being a blogger and I'm certainly not complaining (I love what I do), but sometimes this can be hard.
Yesterday afternoon/last night, I was tired. I got home after the game, heated up some leftovers in the microwave for dinner, and fell asleep. Perhaps is was the combination of beer, cold medicine and a full belly, but I just crashed, probably around 7:30 p.m. I didn't check the computer or the live game thread or look at any post game thoughts I was simply exhausted.
I don't know if my need to go to sleep is any sort of metaphor for the entire season, but quite frankly, the 2008 football season has been incredibly tough personally and as a blogger, but also incredibly rewarding. As a result of Texas Tech's continued success throughout the year, I spent more and more time on the computer, which meant that I spent less and less time with my wife. Don't worry, we're totally cool and she likes what I do, but she did comment as I was nodding off last night:
"I'm glad for you that the season is over."
Me too.
The Game Experience:
I'm pulling back the curtain a bit, but my normal game-watching partners are my brother-in-law, Justin, and his friend from Texas Tech, Brandon. When we first figured out that Texas Tech was headed to the Cotton Bowl, Justin and Brandon decided that we were not going to buy tickets, but rather buy tickets outside of the stadium after the game was started. For those of you who know me, I'm a pretty nervous individual, so I naturally said that I was nervous about doing this, but that I would go along with the idea.
We waited until 1:00 p.m. until we decided to even walk to the stadium and found a three tickets together in section 104, but the guy wanted $60.00 a ticket. Not good enough. We had almost made an entire lap around the stadium, and we missed the first Texas Tech touchdown when we happened upon a guy selling three tickets together for $125.00 a ticket in section 4, 30 yard line, row 17. We told him that we'd buy them for $100.00, he offered $110.00. Again, $100.00. Sold. We saw the second Texas Tech touchdown on replay right as we were walking into the stadium.
Success?
Right In Middle of the Ole Miss Fans:
As a result of sitting in section 4, we were right in the middle of Ole Miss country and I've got nothing but good things to say about the guys sitting in front of us who were cheering hard for their team and not giving us a hard time about the loss. Sure, there was some trash-talking behind us, but that's part of life as a fan. Sometimes you're on the winning side and sometimes you're on the losing side.
The Rebels:
I was really impressed with Ole Miss, I thought they looked tremendous on both sides of the ball. I thought it was going to be a back-and-forth affair because I was pretty confident that the Ole Miss offense was better than what most people thought (I predicted they would score 35 points) and I was still unsure about Texas Tech's defense in stopping a running team like Ole Miss. The Texas Tech offense couldn't figure out until late in the second half that the slant was a really nice option because Ole Miss seemed to be covering the deep routes and sideline routes really well. I just wish that Harrell/Leach would have figured this out sooner.
Mr. Crabtree:
The Dallas Observer's Richie Whitt mentioned it before Christmas and DallasBasketball.com's Mike Fisher confirms that Michael Crabtree has tabbed Anthony "Paco" Montoya as his personal assistant:
"Michael Crabtree is like Michael Irvin in terms of work ethic and talent,'' says Paco, who makes no secret of his assumption that Crabtree is going pro. "But there is a big difference: Michael Crabtree doesn't go out, doesn't drink, does do that, you know, 'social' stuff that Michael Irvin did. Crabtree doesn't have those flaws or those demons.''
We wish you well Michael and as a Texas Tech fan, I thank you for your services. You have been an absolute pleasure to watch for two years. I'll only say one other thing and I'm saying this not as an attorney or as a blogger for Texas Tech, but more or less as a person who has seen similar situations in life: be short with your leash on who you trust (just ask Mike Modano), have some checks and balances with who has control over your money, and educate yourself about investments, estate planning, etc.
Injuries:
Losing starting right tackle Marlon Winn, safety Darcel McBath, cornerback Jamar Wall and not even having L.A. Reed available really took it's toll on the team. I'm not making excuses, please don't think that, but losing those guys made a huge difference in the way this team performed. If anything, this speaks to the fact that this still isn't a deep program. We're working on it, but there's still a ways to go.
Fourth and Four:
Really?
Q. Graham's 4th and 4 quarterback sneak could you take us through that call? I don't know how much you paid attention to the defensive side, but seemed like you had a lot of missed tackles is that how you saw it?
COACH LEACH: It's the ultimate doing your job the most important thing you do on defensive is tackle and offense is block. There ain't nothing different about all that. The 4th and 4 call we weren't on the same page. He thought I wanted one thing and I thought I wanted another. And so miscommunication.Q. What did you want? It's obvious.
COACH LEACH: I'm going to leave that one for the ages. It's not one where either of us are proud of, I guarantee you.Q. Back on that 4th and 4 play, what was the thinking, your thinking about going for it at that point?
COACH LEACH: We weren't going to go for it, we were hoping to draw them off sides. I didn't do a good job communicating it. He thought something different and off we went. It was a very bonehead play. If I wanted a different result I have to communicate it better.
Rotating the Second Units:
Perhaps the most frustrating thing about watching the game was seeing players in the game that had not been effective all year. There's no doubt that Jake Ratliff and Sandy Riley are good Red Raiders, but when Ruffin McNeill is playing these two guys because he wants to rotate his players, there's a problem. And it's not just these two guys, it's the two deep across the board. I'm sure that McNeill sees the same thing that we see, in that there's okay talent in the second group, but not enough talent that they need to be on the field for entire series as we're trying to stop Ole Miss. I wish I could specificlly remember which drives they were, but I recall seeing second unit guys out there and it was incredibly frustrating.
There's an obvious difference in talent between any team's starting unit and the backups, and playing the second unit can work against some teams, but not in a bowl game and not against a physical Ole Miss team. For McNeill, I think he's going to have to make a decision next year as to how he's going to run his defense. I know that the front line only loses Ratliff, and the idea of rotating players is nice, but there needs to be a little bit more reason to play the second unit than what we've seen thus far. As much as McNeill would like to rotate players, it may not be possible to do for such long stretches during games and he may have to do it piece-meal, rather than the wholesale substitutions we saw yesterday.
The Secondary:
Where to begin. There are some talented players leaving the friendly confines of Lubbock and after watching the defense without Darcel McBath for a good part of the game, I'm worried about the secondary next year. I'm going to stay positive but there are some mighty big shoes to fill and I'm going to start saying my nightly prayers that safety Steven Harris gets back on the team and there's someone that can step up in that second corner position.
Wrapping It Up:
I think I still need a few days to digest everything, a few days to take off from football and not have any sort of emotional investment in any game is going to be nice for a change.
Bottom line is that I'm proud of this team, and to echo kayakyakr's sentiments there's a lot of positive things going on at Texas Tech with this football program.
Are there some negatives as well? You bet. There are negatives with just about everything in life, but I like where things are headed.
As I look back at what I've just written, I haven't even mentioned the offense other than Crabtree probably leaving for the NFL. We'll get to all of it.
This has been a record breaking year for Double-T Nation and I owe a huge part of this success to the success on the football field and another huge part to you guys who come back every day for information about Texas Tech.
I was mentioning to djollie111 over breakfast yesterday that the biggest reason as to why I started DTN was because I didn't feel like I should have to pay for information about my team. I still am not a subscriber to either RRS.com or to RP.com and although they do a great job and I'm sure that I could afford the $10.00 a month to follow my team, I've always wanted to provide a different, more-free, outlet for myself and for other people looking for some Texas Tech fellowship.
I hope you stick with DTN through basketball and baseball season. We'll try to have some fun one way or another.
I thank each and every one of you.

Thank you, Seth
I have refused to pay to join the other blog/team sites as well. For whatever reason, it always irked me that they want to get rich just so fans have a place to talk and learn about their team.

Thanks' Seth
I have enjoyed being able to interface for FREE with you and many more Red Raider fans, as well as some from other teams, though some of them were not really nice or welcomed. This has been a very up and down season for Tech football and us fans. I vented today on the lubbockonline.com site, so I won’t get into any of that here. I am disappointed that I was unable to get to Dallas and meet all you guys, but am happy that I did not go, because the trip back to Austin would have been awful. I look forward to the rest of this school year with both bbals and track, the calm of Summer, and the renewed excitement awaiting next year for Tech football. I will continue to log in and get my daily “fix”.

Thank you Seth
Many times over the course of this season, I would tell anyone/everyone that in my 30+ years of being a Red Raider fan, this was the VERY BEST time EVER to be a Red Raider. Even though yesterdays game has certainly knocked some of the luster off…it’s still the VERY BEST time EVER to be a Red Raider fan. It was most refreshing and educating to come here to learn and gain more insight than I would have ever garnered on my own. Your wife must be a saint because I can only imagine the time and effort that you put into this blog on a daily basis.
For next season I have my fingers crossed that my daughter will not only be attending Tech, but will also be a member of the Goin’ Band, which means I’ll HAVE to go to more games. I’m convinced that there are more GREAT things coming to Tech!!!!!!
GO TECH!!!!!!!!!

I can understand wanting your daughter to go to Tech and follow in your footsteps, but you really want her to wear those ridiculous uniforms in the band?
Tech’s uniforms might the second-worst in the Big 12, behind texas.

wrong there beergut. tech band unis are awesome.
also helps that the tech band has put together some great shows (the pirate show yesterday was incredible).
I’m sorry that your band is boring, though.

what is the difference between Tech band unis and a high school band's uniforms?
seriously?
I’m not wanting to get into a whole argument about band unforms, so I’ll read your reply to this, possibly respond, and then end the discussion there, but Tech’s uniforms look too high schoolish to me.
A&M’s FTAB is awesome if you like military marching, boring if you don’t.
Personally, I prefer the showband style favored by most HBCUs, which neither of our schools utilizies.
by Beergut on Jan 4, 2009 5:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ahh, there’s your problem: you have an incorrect interpretation of Tech’s uniforms as they compare to highschool band uniforms. While Tech did get new uni’s this year, the new ones are greatly based on the old ones (I believe with an updated cut and a few modifications to the details). The old uniforms, in the same way, were based on their predecessors, and so on back in history to the original Matador look. I don’t know if you were in high school band, but if you were, you would know that the high schools don’t come up with anything original on their own (for the most part), but instead copy from higher-level sources. Band uniform design for the high schools came from band uniforms from the colleges. Even the HBCU’s use the same types of uniforms as the high schools.
So, in summary, Tech band uniforms don’t look like high school uniforms but instead, high school uniforms look like college uniforms.
After all of that was said, Tech’s uni’s don’t look like any high school uniform I’ve ever seen:

prefacing your comment with “respectfully” does not make it respectful. We’re not surprised that an aggie has a not-so-hot opinion about anything Texas Tech. Nice of you to show up – I guess.

Thanks For Helping Make It a Great Year
Despite the downer Bowl game, it has been a great year to be a Red Raider fan. Being able to start the day with Double T Nation has made keeping up with Texas Tech much easier and the additional focus has been fun. I’ve had season tickets for the last six years and the Mike Leach era has been both exhilarating and maddening. The key to Tech’s future success is alumni/fan/student support. The national TV appearances and increased t-shirt fan interest were good for keeping Tech in the national conversation, which was a first for Tech.
Next year holds much promise. The personnel losses on offense will give talented players a chance to make their legacy. I’m looking forward to seeing Taylor Potts and Baron Batch lead the offense next year. A downfield passing game should be interesting for a change. The defense has to replace the safeties and Ratliff, but everyone else comes back a year older, wiser, and stronger. I’m hopeful that some of the guys on campus step up and some of the new recruits shine with the opportunity to play for Tech.
I also have a daughter who is making her choice about which college to attend and I likewise hope she chooses Texas Tech and plays in the Band. That would make four generations of my family Tech graduates. It is a great time to be a Red Raider. Guns up!

Proud to be a
Goin’ Band Fan! I would also like to give props to Seth, who does a great job keeping this site interesting and on an even keel. I have only posted once before, mostly just lurk, but I appreciate all of the positive vibes this board always provides. I’m with TTpilk645, it’s my daily “fix”. I'm sorry. but y'all got exposed.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but your defense was never good, and you should have lost by a bigger margin. If y’all could have played as well as the game against Texas, you would have had a shot. Your offense is still great, but Ole Miss is a really good team. They should have performed better during the regular season so that they could have played in a BCS bowl, instead of Cincy. They might have even deserved to play in the Sugar Bowl, since they definitely would have shown up better. They almost beat Bama during the season, 24-20.
Who are y’all picking in the National Championship?

interesting how
everyone else’s losses are flukes, wins are deserved. Meanwhile, Tech’s wins are flukes, and losses are deserved.

Our loss was deserved. We were screwing around against a very capable team.
Thankfully, we learned from it and played motivated football for the rest of the season, no matter how bad the opponent appeared.

Umm... the below pic wasn't from the Ole Miss game.
We played Ole Miss during the day. That was from the Auburn game a year ago, I think. It’s fine with me if a player cries, as long as he uses the emotion as motivation to play harder next time.
Sorry if I came off like a troll in my original comment. It started as an apology from the SEC from matching y’all up with an extremely under rated team. I got carried away, though. Again, I’m sorry. Now could someone answer the question at the end of the comment?

No, just wondering how the team that saw Oklahoma at their best (or so it seemed) is viewing the game.

well
you should have lost by a bigger margin
That is just a stupid statement. Mississippi had an INT return for a TD, which made the margin appear better than it was. Why should the game have gone more in Mississippi’s favor? I would argue that while many things went wrong for Tech in several areas of this game, a whole hell of a lot of things went right for Mississippi.
They should have performed better during the regular season so that they could have played in a BCS bowl, instead of Cincy.
If Mississippi played in the Big East, you might have a point. Since they are an SEC team, this claim is ludicrous. You can make a better argument that Georgia belonged in a BCS bowl than you can for Ole Miss, simply based on SEC rankings.
They might have even deserved to play in the Sugar Bowl, since they definitely would have shown up better.
Right, b/c that 12-0 season by Alabama was just a fluke and should be ignored, correct? Winning your division doesn’t mean anything, right?
by Beergut on Jan 4, 2009 5:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
They almost beat Bama during the regular season.
And Bama nearly lost to LSU (before they discovered Jefferson). Bama seemed happy with their season even after losing in the SEC Championship game. And winning your division doesn’t really mean much, since Tennessee won the SEC East last year while UGA was clearly the better team.
UGA wasn’t that good this year, esp. after losing a large part of their front 7 on defense to injuries. I said that Ole Miss should have played better during the regular season, but they didn’t play up to their potential until late in the season.
And the first TD Tech scored was on a slip (so was the interception by Ole Miss). Besides those plays, your last touchdown was scored in garbage time. The margin of defeat should have been closer to the 19 point difference after the last Ole Miss touchdown.

I have watched us play in three cotton bowl games. Yesterday’s game left me feeling almost as sick as when USC killed us. As of today, I cannot wait for the spring game and the new season. From a Rebel
As a Rebel I really enjoyed reading your pregame match ups. I thought they were well researched and you attempted to be as nonbias as possible. (I mean everyone is going to be biased towards their own team) I also enjoyed you allowing me to make arguments why I thought you were wrong on some match ups and providing feedback to my thoughts. I have been very impressed with your site and I hope you keep up the good work.

Seth, I want to thank you. Your insight and compiling of information has been fantastic. I get up between 4:00 and 5:00 and by 6:00 I have already hit refresh button several times in anticipation of your first post. With that said, please pace yourself and do not get burned out. I looked for you at the pep rally. Sitting 20 yards in front of the band in the Automotive Building was quit a treat even in the accoustics of a pipe. Our band is the best, period. At least I did not burn my Cotton Bowl shirt and am gradually working through frustrations and anger to the point of appreciating the best season ever.
