Late Night Ruffin McNeill Thoughts

I haven't had time to watch the game on DVR, but have noticed in the comments of the open game day thread and other places that defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill didn't blitz enough during the game, or perhaps the defense wasn't aggressive enough against Ole Miss. If blitzing against Ole Miss means that the corners are playing on an island, then this seems like it would be an awful idea.

Sure, it has the potential to be great, but the way that Snead seemed to be completing every long pass with help would have simply carried over if McNeill had blitzed and the Ole Miss receivers would have been in single coverage. Remember too that McNeill was pretty short-handed as well, without McBath and Wall meant that he was playing guys that he probably never intended on playing.

Not to mention, if McNeill blitzes and Texas Tech continued to display the inability to stop the run, that's one less defender to save a potential McCluster touchdown run as he and Bolden seemed to regularly be in the Texas Tech defensive backfield.

Maybe I'm too conservative too, but I don't blame McNeill at all for not wanting to blitz, especially when the corners had not shown any ability to turn around and knock down a pass or two and two of four starters in his secondary were essentially out for the game.

Granted, there's the possibility that the blitz would have gotten to Snead created a little bit of pressure, but I think the game-plan starts with Leach and McNeill. As much as we like to think that Leach is very hands-off regarding the defense, I do think he has input about the overall game plan and there isn't a defense that Leach doesn't think that he eventually won't score against. I'm convinced that McNeill's job is to keep it close.

I'm not ready to give up on McNeill (I seem to be developing a pattern about giving up on coaches) as I thought the defense did make some pretty big strides defensively this year, but having the right type of players and athletes will make a coach either look like an absolute genius or completely incompetent.

As much as we might think it's about scheme, I tend to think it's about talent more than anything else. In fact, I'm inclined to believe that this is a huge reason why McNeill has made such a huge push to recruit defensive backs in this year's class that are all excellent at coverage and can play on an island. Everyone of the defensive back recruits are over 6'0" and all have better than average speed. Personally, I think McNeill wants to play a more attacking style of defense, but again, it comes down to talent and right now, it's better than most teams in the Big 12, but it's not upper tier yet either.

We'll have a lot more on the direction of the defense once we get a little further into the offseason, including progress in regards to recruits and how responsible McNeill should be for Setencich's recruits.

It's goint to be a long offseason

Blitzing

I understand not wanting to leave the corners 1 on 1. But I feel like Tech’s opponents should at least have to fear blitzing. If the threat isn’t there, then their qb can just sit back in the pocket and wait for the receivers to get open, especially with a school like Ole Miss that has good line play.

I agree about the threat

and under normal circumstances (i.e. everyone was healthy) then maybe, but McNeill was in a tough position. Damned if he did, damned if he didn’t.

I would even be in favor of just faking a blitz to make the offense at least THINK about something other than a straight up defense. And you can blitz without leaving a corner on an island. We do have linebackers – I think. ; )

But in general, we don’t attack. At all. It’s no wonder teams like Ole Miss and Baylor feel they can have the offensive performance of the year against us.

Seth hit on something I’ve been saying all season – we just don’t have a lot of talent on defense in general. Sure, there are some solid guys in three or four spots. But for the most part, we don’t have many guys who could exepct to be listed on the two-deep at a school in the Top 30 defensively.

Besides, there are other things you can do besides blitz. You can get creative with alignments, you can get creative with pre-snap shifting, you can get creative with personnel packages. Would those work? I don’t know. But the point is if you just line up in your basic base defense 95% of the time, you will be exposed. It’s not hard to adjust to vanilla.

Again…would you rather get embarrased being obvious with the scheme, or would you rather get embarrased trying to attack every so often with the reward being some nice plays that build confidence and attitude? Defense is about effort and attitude more than anything we can do schematically. I get that. But if you don’t have it, you need to manufacture it from time to time.

Lastly, while the recruiting efforts looks decent, do we expect the new crop of DB recruits to step in and start defensively as true freshmen? Heaven help us if that’s the case. Do we give the defense three years to develop? Four years?

I understand wanting to be a little patient with Ruffin. But at what point do you say, “Okay, guy. This ain’t working very well…we’ve got to at least TRY to do something different and creative. Or we need to head a different direction.”

...and...

“I’m convinced that McNeill’s job is to keep it close.”

I pray that’s wrong. I pray that Leach decides instead of keeping it close, to play to keep them from getting a first down. If that doesn’t work, let’s keep them from scoring. Seems a bit more proactive, eh?

Several things here......

First I love McNeill but Romeo Crannell is lurking out there and if he would come back for a return visit( he as at Tech in the late 70’s) then he might help McNeill scheme better.
Second this season has closed on a tough note as opposed to several years in the past 5 where we closed well. But we have to remember Tech went 11-2 this year. When was the last 11 win season that’s right…1976. So let’s get nothing on next year!!

Tech has to blitz

Under size LB’s can’t sit and wait to take on pulling O line and fullbacks. Tech does not have the D size to sit and play base D most of the game. They have to take chances. I would rather give up a big play trying to blitz then a 6 min 80 yard drive every time.

Just read somewhere

that Sesay and Perry were suspended for the game, and we were playing with 3 DT’s instead of the usual 5 rotation. Sesay and Perry add some size, and could have been a factor. No excuse, just maybe an explanation.

It's not just the defense

The TOP discrepancy was a huge factor on Friday. The final score doesn’t show just how poorly we were executing on offense. In the first half alone, Ole Miss had over 20 minutes TOP. Take away a returned INT and and TD late after the game was put away, and we scored only 21 points. We thought we could take advantage of their DBs, and it just wasn’t happening. Our RBs combined for 8 carries. 8. Harrell averaged only 6.3 yards per att. His season average was over 8 yards per att. It was obvious that Harrell lost some significant practice time due to the surgery on his hand. He was not himself. Yet he kept trying to pass us back into the game. Poor decision making. Crabtree was obviously injured worse in the Baylor game than we realized. He was a non factor. I don’t recall a series in which he played more than 2 downs. When Ole Miss realized that Harrell was off and Crabtree didn’t have to be double covered, they started bringing pressure to keep Harrell off balance.

Losing McBath for a half, followed by Wall was huge. As already mentioned, Reed was not available. We had guys out of position, and Ole Miss deserves credit for taking advantage. We would have done the same. Our D stopped Ole Miss early, but we weren’t able to capitalize on offense. They stopped them again late on the goal line and recovered a fumble, but we gave it back on a safety. Our D spent a majority of the time on the field Friday. I think they held up their end of the bargain. It was the Offense that let us down, continually putting the D back on the field until they were worn down uninspired.

I second that

I was at the game, and this is exactly what I noticed. We were all talking in the stands late in the first quarter saying how our D was out there too long… There was simply no way they could hold up. I believe in the first Q alone our D was out there over 12 min. Losing Wall and McBath was a killer as well. I expected so much more from our offense that just failed to produce. Our D did a great job for being put in such bad situations.

Bringing Pressure Every Play....

Is not the point. The point here is that you have to change the look of the defense, and you have to make the offense decipher where the pressure and where the coverage is going to come from. Unless your front four can just manhandle the offensive line, you won’t get consistent pressure unless you disguise somewhat who is coming.
I haven’t poured over hours of tape from our season (the acid in my stomach is just now tolerable from attending the CB) but, we defintiely changed up our looks much more in other games (2nd half A+M).
I had been upset that Ruffin didn’t make alterations in his gameplan until half (not on the fly), Friday he didn’t make any at all. Do you think Graham would have liked to have seen the same front four with no blitzing all day? Ruffin’s approach made that UT reject look like Peyton Manning.
Why can we be so innovative on offense and so tone deaf on defense and special teams?. Clearly it starts at the top….ML has to demand the level of execution on D as he does on O.

by oldschoolraider on Jan 5, 2009 1:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think they would have gotten more consistent pressure on harrell if they had just rushed 4, dropped 7 all day. He’ll hold onto the ball much longer that way and their defensive line was good enough to get there. If you blitz him, he’ll actually throw the ball quickly.

Ole Miss

Had at least 3 lb’s or db’s (combination) lining up as to blitz on every play in the 2nd half…..typically two of them were going and 1 or 2 were moving back into zone blitz coverage. Harrell had happy feet.
Ole Miss schemed and executed it perfectly, and we didn’t run near enough screens to counter it (although they were getting to outside pretty damn quick also).
I would have given anything to see us committed to draws and screens exclusively with Batch…..he will break big plays pretty frequently. We get better at RB next year by Woods graduating (yeah, I know he can block well).

Recruiting

Wow I just read that TTU is not even in the top 30 in recruiting!! Do we need to upgrade that area? We should be parlaying this year into a boom recruiting year!

class size is part of the recruiting rankings and the last 3 years have seen tech take small classes. each year the average star rating has been improving and this year made a larger jump than normal, so far.
