KSU at Texas Tech Post-Game Thread
After a compete destruction of KSU, Tech may have a QB controversy if Leach sticks with Potts if/when he gets healthy enough to play. Sheffield was simply stunning tonight. Perfectly thrown short, medium and deep passes with regularity has made him a quick fan favorite. Will he continue to lead the Red Raider charge?

That would suck if we had to ride Potts straight to mediocrity for the rest of the year with Sticks on the bench.

But Potts wasn't as good before he got hurt
There was online “discussion” for benching before his “concussion”. I know online social networks don’t matter to Coach Leach but if we are discussing it, I feel confident he is discussing it.
I think Potts was on the verge of demotion before. The pace and energy and mobility are better will SS. We don’t know his durability against a strong team. Maybe next week we find out.
I hope SS gets a shot at Nebraska. I’d like to see him against a better team.

Potts' concentration
I think I’ve posted this before, so let me restate that Potts, when he keeps his head in the game and stays focused, is a very good QB. He got his bell rung against Texas, and although he led the team on a touchdown drive after that hit, he never seemed to be the same.
Coach Leach mentioned something about a lack of confidence after the Houston game. He didn’t mention Potts by name, but it was my opinion that he was talking about Taylor.
I'm not worthy. Really.

its been a good confidence builder, but don’t forget the competition of new mexico and k-state, both who are supposed to be horrible. We’ll know a lot more next week on the road against one of the best defenses in the nation.
but it is good to see the traditional tech offense chugging along. beautiful.
i don’t see how leach can go back to potts after the energy stix brought. potts had his chance against inferior competition in ND, rice, and new mexico. we gotta stick with stix, at least until he comes back down to reality and does something to lose the job.

I doubt Leach is going to bend to pressure to bench Potts, but man, did the offense not just look comfortable with Sticks running things? I didn’t see the UNM game, but now I have to say, I’m torn about who should be running this offense when we go into Lincoln.

Tough position for Leach
I have looked forward to the Potts era for the past two seasons. He had a couple of years in the system, good size, strong arm, and a solid receiving corp — the potential to be a Tech QB legend. However, it appears he is missing or has lost the intangibles. Potts “should” be the better QB, but Sticks has unquestionably outperformed by inspiring, leading, and creating the tempo/rhythm our system requires. I still believe Potts has better potential, but Stick has better performance — tough call for the man in charge.
by CRV on Oct 10, 2009 9:45 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
What this kind of reminds me of is the Applewhite/Simms saga at UT
obviously there are differences but if you get right down to it, you have physically inferior QB who just makes the offense work VS. the prototype QB who can’t put it all together.

Sheffield has played incredibly… for those who watched it on TV, you probably missed how buzzed this team was tonight!! There was electricity all over the place!! Sticks has brought this passion to the team
by johnlaf13 on Oct 10, 2009 9:46 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
in this system and in college ball in general its the intangibles that matter most at the quarterback position and there is no doubt that stix is the man in that regard
by orangebloodvampire on Oct 10, 2009 9:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Sticks had a great night tonight. he was responsible for 56 of tonight’s 80 points (including 7 of KSU’s). I’m not sure it’s time to pull Potts, but if he comes out slow in Lincoln, Leach def shouldn’t be hesitant to pull him.

haha i dont know what this kid would have to do to get the job if some of you were coaching this team. results are all that matters, who cares about a stronger arm or who has been in teh system longer. this kid gets out in a game situation and strait up performs, that is what its all about.

If one actually reads my post regarding the two attributes to which you refer, one would clearly see that I am not fully endorsing Potts. I was simply referring to the potential that he offered coming into the season and the fact that such potential cannot be completely discounted. We can still have a good 2009, but the 2010 season is a great opportunity for our team. I simply believe we must have the best QB – with the tangibles and intangibles – on the field next season, and this season is a QB development season regardless of who ends up behind center. If Potts does not have the intangibles/swagger/whatever, then he shouldn’t be the guy and there should be no controversy.

My Analysis...
We should start Stix next week. We’re playing @ Nebraska. We can’t wait until halftime when we’re down to pull Potts. If we want to win, we MUST start Sheffield. Potts has to step it up if he wants to continue to play. I just don’t see how you can start Potts after the offense had its 2nd most productive game of the Mike Leach era under Sheffield. Other than the pick, Stix played a flawless game. The O Line played really well, but when the pocket broke down, Stix scrambled and made a play. Potts would have either taken a sack or made a bad pass (most likely a pick or near-pick). When you’re in the middle of conference play, there is no room to be sentimental. If you start Sheffield, Potts is going to be upset. If you start Potts, Sheffield is going to be upset (especially after 739 yards of total offensive output). It just doesn’t make sense to me to start Potts after the way Sheffield played. Sure, Potts is a more physical player, but Stix has the uncanny ability to make plays. Potts had 4.5 games to prove he deserves to start. The fact that Stix has 11(?) TD’s in 1.5 games and 3(?) picks says something. It took McCoy 5.5 games to throw 10 TD’s.
I can’t leave out the fact that the defense played OUT OF THEIR MINDS tonight. Seven points allowed. SEVEN???!!! Texas Tech’s D, which gave up 4 TD’s to the 0-5 Lobos only allowed a (late) TD to a team with a winning record coming into the game. Wow. Ruff whipped the D into shape and I think I speak for everyone everywhere when I say right now, this defense is downright SCARY.
Quick Report Card:
Offense: The stats say it all. 66 points. 739 total yards. 9.8 yards per play. 185 yards rushing. Batch looked scary. 33 first downs. 5-8 on 3rd down. Wow.
Offensive MVP: Sheffield
Defense: Seven points given up by the defense (the 2nd team gave up a very late TD). When the K State offense got close, we either forced a turnover, or stopped em on 3rd down. 286 yards of total offense for K State with a late 75 yard in garbage time.
Defensive MVP: D Line
Special Teams: K State had 11 kickoff returns for 184 yards (16.7 per return). That’s pretty good. Erxleben punted 1 time in the 4th quarter. Matt Williams even kicked a FG.
Special Teams MVP: Matt Williams.
Overall, I give this game an A+, due to the way we DOMINATED the entire game. Let’s hope we carry this momentum into Lincoln next week.

I missed the first half, but got to see all of the second half. All I can say is this is the best all-round game this year the team has played. Did CoachT blog on this? He was really being negative about this week. Shef had only one bad play-the INT returned for a TD. Other than that, he probably had the best first start of any QB in Tech history.Amazing. All the receivers looked great. Batch was a monster (I hope he is OK-it looked like after his last TD that he was hurting). The defense was simply stifling. Now, for the Huskers in Lincoln next week. They do have a killer of a defense, but the way Tech looked today, Nebraska has no chance at all. I don’t care who plays QB, this team is starting to jell, especially the O-Line. I someone can just knock off UT a couple of times, we could have a good chance of winning it all, IF they continue to play this well. Congratulations to a great game, Texas Tech.

I stand corrected
Pilk you called this one, I wasn’t anywhere near as optimistic as you about this game, but our team, especially the defense, really stepped up. The team looked really sharp on all three sides of the ball.
I’m still not as optimistic as you about Nebraska. Leach’s record on the road against ranked teams is pretty bad. However, if this team plays like they did tonight, then we should win.
by CoachT on Oct 11, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Optimistic
Yes, I am, but I have “earned” that right after cheering for Texas Tech in all sports since the 1950’s (E.J. Holub, Coolidge Hunt, Del Ray Mounts, Harold Hudgins, Tom Petty, Donnie Anderson, Tom Wilson, et al.) I will never get totally down on Tech, even if they become the “Pink” Raiders again and lose 7,8,9 games a year. I don’t foresee them ever going that low again, but you never know. As for the rest of this year, especially next week, I think Tech has a legitimate chance to win 10 games, including a bowl win. That means one more regular season loss. That could be any of the remaining games, but with the direction Tech is headed now, I don’t see anyone but Okie State or Oklahoma even threatening to beat Tech. I really believe Tech could win in Lincoln by a comfortable margin (2 or more TDs). Oklahoma could be jelling by the time Tech plays them in Lubbock, and Okie State always gives Tech trouble in Stillwater. I am not too concerned about anyone else, though. So, if they do well as I think, they could be in anything from a BCS bowl to the Alamo Bowl or Cotton Bowl. My HOPE is a BCS bowl berth, surpassing everyone but UT in the conference. That could change if UT does not improve their play next week because OU could take it from them is they are not careful. Actually, the whole conference may be a step or two worse this year than last. But, 10 regular season wins (Tech would have to win out to do that) should guarantee a BCS berth for Tech. That is what I am optimistically hoping for. Later, Terrill.

STOKED!
I am so stoked! If this team can be as prepared the rest of the way for each game they are going to be practically unstoppable. And did anyone see in the second half how Carter was screaming at the team! He was all pumped up. He obviously meant a lot to how well the team played along the line on offense tonight. He probably could have been the darkhorse OMVP. I think a lot of the media thought K-State was on the verge of having a big game and they figured Tech was where they would start a run. Well, they started a run….Tech’s run that is. All things bad about them was shown to the world by Tech and Tech showed they are a major force to be reckoned with. Many may have discounted what Tech had based on the two losses, but look at who they lost to-two highly ranked teams. Tech is for real. It is time the world started seeing it. GO TECH!

Nebraska
What can we (that are going) to the Nebraska game do to show some love to Sticks (besides letting him gain 30 lbs by osmosis hanging with me)?
Not drinking tonight….need creative thoughts from those that are.

Sticks is the starter....
Potts may have more physical things but like Harrell Sticks is just a leader!!!! I also think Potts is not alright yet. He looked still alittle dazed tonite on the sidelines. Sticks gives the neb. d more to prepare for. I really think Potts is got hurt in the ut game and last week just made it worse. So I think it will be tuff next week but I think we can win with Sticks and he puts us in every game left on the schedule. Wreck’Em Tech

Fasten your seatbelts; it just might be a bumpy ride.
As BS would say, "Just win, bay-bee."
Most coaches don’t bench a player who’s out for an injury (and K-State didn’t look like UT or Houston), but this will be interesting.
The Pirate will do what The Pirate wants to do, and he might not feel like explaining himself.
But Sticks’ mobility is a plus, and Potts’ insistence on throwing off his back foot drives me nuts.
Wreck ‘em.

That sums it up.....
That is the most concise analysis by Rico Plano. That is why Sticks should be the starter now. I think Leach doesn’t care about anything but winning. And at the end of the day that really is what it is all about at this point. Wreck’Em Tech

Despite the 40 degree wind chill I stayed until the end of the game and love every minute of it. Sticks CAN throw the deep ball effectively which we all questioned prior to this game. He is extremely accurate and made a lot of plays happen with his feet. I want to watch the game again tomorrow when I get back to Fort Worth to see if our O line protected better or if it just seemed that way due to Sticks ability to move and find open receivers. Probably both.
Leach has everything to lose by starting Potts. If he plays poorly he will look like a fool. No one will fault him for starting Sticks.
I guess we should thank McElroy for choosing Alabama. Otherwise we wouldn’t get to have such a talented “backup” quarterback. Wreck ’em!

I realize that there wasn’t a lot of tape available for Kstate to use in preparation for Sheffield but the guy deserves a lot of credit for running the Air Raid offense better than it has been run all year. The Wildcats looked pretty bad but they beat Iowa State and ISU played tough against Kansas so I suppose you could argue that they are decent. The whole team looked inspired today and I credit the coaches for getting everyone refocused. We looked to be on the verge of a meltdown with the twitter nonsense but I have renewed confidence in our team’s ability to finish the season strong.
My only two complaints are kickoff coverage and Jamar Wall’s defense. He has the potential to be a difference maker but 10 yard cushions on every play tend to be problematic.
Our trip to Lincoln will give Leach the opportunity for the elusive quality road win that we so desparately need.
We need a little help from OU next week in Red River. Bradford looked rusty but Baylor is the right team for him to struggle against. The Sooner defense is legit and McCoy has underwhelmed most of the year. It should be a great game!

How bad could Jamar have played?…they only scored once on our defense, and that was late in the game.

That is right
They have won a lot of conference championships in hockey and that is really their #1 sport. However, the football team may gain a lot of fans if they continue to play well. The Fighting Sioux (a name that may change if the Sioux Nation is strong enough with their disapproval of North Dakota using their name as the name of their team) have become my second favorite college team.

Definitely one of my favorite teams
I work at the barnes and noble on campus and several of their fans came in that day just looking around. Some of them actually bought stuff (including their bus driver haha), but every one of them were just as nice as they could be. Most respectful college football fans I have ever came across.

I know I’m kind of nitpicking but he got beat a few times and his coverage may cause problems against a better passing team. I guess I am hard on him because I believe he has the potential for great things similar to what we saw against New Mexico. All things considered, no harm no foul.
By the way…great fourth down stand by our defense. Good tackle by Bird to prevent the touchdown. He could have had a pick earlier in the game but we will let it slide because linebackers aren’t known for their catching ability. Hats off to Ruffin for a great game plan.
