Random things to worry about against Nebraska
Just in time for league road play we begin a new controversy. New tech starting QB (he’s fun to watch), Secondary playing well. LB’s leading the team in tackles. The sack total is clawing upward to replace the 22 each by M. Dixon and B. Williams. Every Tech receiver seems to have suddenly regained their sure handedness (is that a word?).
Things to worry about: Not so sticky hands for the defense. By my count we dropped 3 x catchable interceptions against K state. We’ll need those three turnovers against Z. Lee and the Husker offense. Just based on Helu and Burkheads running in the Mizzou game looks to be very tough match up for the Raider Dline. Graves, Wade and Perry need to step up and help out Hunter, Whitlock and Jones. The NE O line is pretty fearsome lot. Without an effective rotation we’ll see the starters gasping for air very quickly. Heres to hoping D. Howard is back at and @100%. Ugh. We really need three tipped Zac Lee passes in this one.
On offense the roll out or more politely run away from whichever side Mr. Suh is on seems to be in order. I know CPT Leach never changes plays or schemes but somehow we’ve got to get 100 yards rushing on Nebraska. It’s just imperative. If we don’t make the NE LB’s respect the run our short throwing game is going to be just that. Short. No gain. Ineffective. These guys tackle very well in space. I’d say NE defense is just about equal to UT’s just bit slower in the secondary. But much better D line performers than UT’s. Here to hoping that Stephens, Jeffers and most especially Batch can have a big day. I am liking what I see from the O line and Sticks is a slippery character but this opponent is making money rushing only 4. It’s working for them and they aren’t giving anybody more than 3.5 seconds to get the ball out. Last time I checked none of our receivers runs a sub 3.5 forty. Without a Raider run game it’s problematic if we can prevail with YAC yardage against these sure handed tacklers.
Special teams: Raider Kick coverage is improving but remember this is the NE team which parlayed 2 x monster series off of special teams play and scored 7 points on us in Lubbock in 08. A 50 plus yard kickoff return - result a missed FG as time expired in the first half. Their kicker barely missed it too - only because of 2 x holding penalties by NE pushed them back. Late in the game the fake FG for a first and goal resulted in a NE TD and ultimately an overtime scare fest because of a missed extra point by Tech. So what am I predicting for this unit? Well we almost got 2 x blocked punts against K state. Pelini also saw this so don’t expect any foul ups by NE special teams here. However a strip of the return man by the Raiders would be very timely. We need a big day from this unit just to ensure Sticks gets the opportunity to get us 2 x scores up on the Big Red machine.
Last the Road game odds.
I am sick of a Leach team going to a stadium not named the Jones and having a poor showing. Let’s do a 2 year recount of not so good away games: Stillwater 07 ok it was exciting, Austin 07 a letdown, Gator bowl ugly up the last minute, Reno 08 what the heck over?, Norman 09 Oh crap! Dallas in 09 nope still jinxed, Austin 09 again disappointed and then Houston by 1 x point !?! Let’s just stop having weak performances on 55 % of the road trips please.

I wouldn't be so sure of a new starting QB
Our Mensa Pirate was asked about it yesterday, and (although is still added some shifty humor) he actually acknowledged there was a decision to make. “I’ve been criticized for not doing what ‘big-time’ programs do so I’ve decided to accommodate the wishes of the media,” Leach said with a smirk. “And ‘big-time’ programs like to have game-time decisions so we’ve got us a game-time decision on our hands, and I think that’ll be not just ‘big-time’ for everyone but exciting for everyone.”-Leach per OSR. Later in the article Winn and Bird say Sheffy needs to start and they hope Leach allows him to do so, because “he’s not a dull guy, he not gloomy or anything. Always puts a smile on your face.” I definitely say start Shef, and just roll to the opposite side of Suh, he could break sticks in half!
And...
Seth had that up in the daily. And to think I thought I had new info.. Seth is on top of it! haha
Really say’s a lot to me – the quotes attributed to Winn and Bird. By saying he’s not gloomy and dull, it pretty much implies that Potts is. That may be a big reason the team didn’t really appear to rally behind Potts and they do seem to respond well to Sheffield. I would prefer our QB situation not be settled by a personality test, but if the personality helps drive the team to be better, that’s different.
I have a strong feeling that if Potts starts, Leach will have a mini-mutiny on his hands in the locker room. Nothing to base that on but innuendo metted out by various players this week in the things they’ve said with their praise of Sheff. Nobody has come to the defense of Potts – at least not in any way that has been used in the media.
I came away from those players' comments with exactly same take.
I read all ofcwhat you suggested between the lines. When your right tackle speaks that highly, and even defensive players? The D even draws confidence knowing their QB is a gamer. What do McCoy and Tebow have in common(besides having Kirk Herbstreit up their arse?). They are charismatic with both their play and their countenence. People are just drawn to them. Like wanting to fight for William Wallace. This Sheffield’s got alot of Doug Flutie in him, except he’s like 6’4".
I think maybe
that part of Leach is drawn to Potts personality, when we have to comments that seem to be directed towards Potts personality in the comments given "
He’s not a very gloomy guy. He doesn’t down himself about a (bad) play
Maybe Leach just leaned more toward the person like him and away from the opposite. My wife even notices that Leach is very expressionless on the sideline during the games.
This is meant in now way as a stab at Potts as i have no idea what kind of personality he has he was verify friendly to me and my family when we where at the red and black game. This is just mearly a suggestion that Leached leaned toward Potts because they get along better? Maybe Potts and Sticks are close in ability to play, as we have all seen the can both throw the ball around and complete pass’s, and Leach just picked with the one he liked since both can play.
If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.
You can't blame ML for picking TP over SS
Assuming for argument’s sake SS WAS the correct choice all along. TP was the blue chip cannon, and SS was the walk on.
What?
Sue will be in Potts ear hole all night. Tech has to be able to move from the pocket and make plays. Come on Leach please don’t do this sh*t with this team now.
They look like they are coming together.
Just my opinion, which is worth absolutely nothing;)
But I really, really, really doubt Potts makes it onto the field at Nebraska. I think Leach wants to make sure Stix keeps improving every day and doesn’t get the big head. Not that Stix is the type to be like that though. Although, I’d imagine most young men in his situation might think more highly of themselves than they ought to.
I just think it’s Leach’s policy or belief in competition making players improve daily.
You're opinion isn't worthless here bro
But I have to believe like Seth says right below here, that Coach is just milking this.
Yeah,
Leach is just messing with everyone, there’s not any question who he’s going to choose.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
Can I retract
my statement (I had actually typed out f-bomb-ing, but thought that was a little much)? Leach would never make a mockery or spectacle of anything.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
I agree....
neb. has already stated they are preparing for both QB’s and they do bring different things to the table and I also think Leach is using this as a motivator for SS. I guess my concern is that to really be effective as the TTecj QB us must be decisive, consistant, and effecient. Potts seems to fit that bill only about 40-50 % of the time and his mechanics( throwing off back foot) is unexpected and very worrisome. SS on the other had seems to fit the QB bill 80% of the time( based on his TD to Drive ratio) so right now go with SS and if he struggles bring in Potts. Not trying to be harsh but bottom line is TTech can and should win and worry about which QB’s feelings we are hurting! Wreck’Em Tech
Gotcha!
I typo allthe time so it’s hillarious that you screwed up the Webster’s official spelling of “Oops” :)
