Texas Tech 31 :: Nebraska 10 :: Open Post-Game Thread

Well, it was a defense-dominated game, especially by Texas Tech.  First half was lights-out, second half not-so much offensively, but some key stops on defense sealed the deal.  It's never easy to go into Lincoln and get a win against a ranked Cornhusker team that was the #2 scoring defense in the country coming in.  WIll we be ranked?  Who will start against the Aggies?  What do you say we talk about it?

For more, be sure to check out:

[Note by Seth C, 10/17/09 6:41 PM CDT ] Maybe we should make him part of the post-game thread. Go Raiders!!!!

Thoroughly impressed.

Really...

I don’t see how Sticks doesn’t get the start after winning on the road against a ranked team. In Lincoln of all places.

Funny how we didn’t get picked for tv and nu did. They have losses to us unranked and vt who was 15 or so. We lost to #2 and #17 at the time. And beat the crap out of them heads up in their place. Good we aren’t televised on the #5 rivalry in the nation according to something I don’t remember preseason. Good job tv.

If you want to know the reason why that game isn’t on TV, just check today’s box score from manhattan

Our offense really struggled today

against a way-above-average defense. Our defense played lights-out for the second consecutive game. Suh was a non-factor. It was a great win on the road against a very difficult team.

Now we head home for what should be wins against the aggies and KU. Like how the team is gelling.

by Techsan71 on Oct 17, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I’d say he’s out of it after today – too difficult for a defensive tackle to win in the first place but he didn’t dominate or really even impact the game today or help his team win.

by jeffinhouston on Oct 17, 2009 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Great showing...

Sticks should definitelys start. Our defense played lights out…two weeks in a row. Offense played a good first half and did enough the second half to hang on to the win. Our special teams need to improve. Really good road win though…especially in Lincoln against a ranked team and large, loud crowd.

Way to go. Great performance by the D. First half the offense was good, but we need to play all 4 quarters again.

Just to clarify, and maybe I should do this on

the post-game thoughts tomorrow, but she made her first appearance after the Nebraska game last year. I was driving home after attending the NE game, bought an LAJ and she was featured in the paper. One of the first things I did when I got home was find her on the Spotted section, quickly saved her picture, and the rest is DTN history.

Let me know what you guys think about the tongue-wagging bell-ringer on the post-game thread (only if we win . . . right?).

I changed the language on my facebook to pirate english last wednesday, before K-st. I dont believe I will set it back normal until Tech loses a game. Here’s to pirate talk until 2011!!!

No doubt the pollsters are befuddled..

As you might expect all the sorry sack Dallas media talking heads got on the bus with B. Pelini. And they got left in a bad neighborhood. With no fare. Lights out Raider defensive effort, special teams only 2 x gaffes and offense scored when they had to. NE scoring defense was great in the 2nd half and kept them in the game. Just based on touches not capitilized upon by our offense the score could have just as easliy been TTU 45 – NE 10. I am so ready for the Aggies – who BTW are having a tough time with K State as we speak. I am going to make simple observation. This is a game vs Nebrasak that is a turning the corner event for the Red Raiders defense. I would expect a near shut out vs the next 3 x opponents and a level of domination not viewed by the Tech faithful since Senior Sack stalked the Jones. Go Raiders! Enjoy this night. Bring on the Aggies. Hey Beergut not to get too harsh but I’m not seeing you folks escaping Lubbock. Escaping with your scalps intact that is. Go Tech. Crush aTm. LOL.

but are we sure painted face girl is even rooting for TTU? I never read the article or anything like that… but it has always bothered me their red is a little closer to NE red than scarlet and that the 2 letters behind her are ‘R’ and ‘K’… which are used to spell nebRasKa but not texas tech. I know they could have said ‘BEAT NEBRASKA’ or something along those lines… but it’s always been something i wondered about.

by CoryCardwell on Oct 18, 2009 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Who is that girl?

‘R’ followed by ‘K’ cannot be Nebraska, unless the ‘A’ has gone for a drink or to the rest room or something. However, ‘R’ followed by ‘K’ could be Arkansas. Now whether that girls is a red raider girl we don’t know, we don’t even know if she is an Arkansas girl but I would guess she is because she is with the group wearing the ‘R’ followed by ‘K’.

2004: Tech 70 Neb 10 LOVE IT!
2005: Tech 34 Neb 31
2008: Tech 37 Neb 31
2009: Tech 31 Neb 28

So many 31s… his prediction being half right helped that… but still odd for 31 to show up in 3/4 games.

Neb- 21
last two weeks have been good predictions for me.Damn OU and their fumbles. So now we don’t take much into acount that Sheffield had won against power puffs at home. Scratch that thought. We should be about #20 or a little higher.TEXAS is still playing on the ropes. It will happen folks TEXAS will fall somewhere.Correction on my last post that NEB could beat TEXAS.They don’t play. But OSU could do the job.I am hitting Lubbock on Thursday night. This will be one hell of a weekend coming up.The game should be sold out by tomorrow night.

Seems foolish now. We can play an average game and win by 28. If we play a good game against aTm at home (we almost always play a spectacular game) it could end up somewhere along the lines of 70+ to 0-10.

Prediction:
Texas Tech – 63
aTm – 6

Had family over today and couldn’t be rude, but boy, am I glad my prediction for this game was absurdly off. What a great management of the game by Sheffield. He took exactly what was available. A few times he slid over right into the defensive pressure but he’ll get better at that. I shudder to think how many sacks Neb would have had with Potts back there. 15? Probably. Our line was swiss cheese for the entire game, though technically they did okay because of only a handful of sacks.

Where was Suh? Complete non-factor, yet the announcers wouldn’t shut up about how he was the best player in the country. Well, the best player in the country didn’t show up. Carter deserves whatever it is he drinks tonight. And who else is glad that kid dumped the goofy mohawk and makeup? (waving arm in the air…)

Defense was unreal for Tech. All game long…never thought this crew had it in them. Granted, the Neb offense is not the strength of their team, but still. Tech now owns the longest consecutive winning streak against Neb in their history. Who would have thought that?

And, oh by the way, Aggie is getting absolutely destroyed by KState. KState, people! Aggies suck. Headed over to texags for a good laugh to cap off a great day.

KU deserves some credit

After being down 24-3 after 29 minutes they have stormed back and outscored Colorado 27-3 in the next 18 minutes of play. While Colorado is not very good and not a finishing team (see their terrible 2nd half performance in the UT game) KU is showing themselves to be a team that Tech must take seriously in 2 weeks.

But I actually like the fact that KU may be ranked when we play them at the Jones on Halloween. Will make the victory that game even sweeter.

by jeffinhouston on Oct 17, 2009 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

Since OU lost today, I suppose there will be no field rushing this year. Sad day.

by RdrPwr on Oct 17, 2009 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

looking at KU's offense

I like the nastiness that Tech’s D is starting to bear down with- we are pressuring the QB and making wideouts pay for the short completions that are KU’s bread and butter. If Will Ford de-cleats Kerry Meier it will be a filthy Halloween Miracle for the Double T Nation. As for KU’s defense, let’s just say they are soft as Charmin two-ply and leave it at that. Either Potts or Sheffield could have a field day against them

by Thorne on Oct 17, 2009 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

right now it just hurts the Big XII North

right up until Kansas starts claiming some scalps from the South…

by mojavereject on Oct 17, 2009 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

An interesting Idea...

I believe the big 12 should make the championship game for the top two teams in the big 12 period. The south has won 9 of the total 13. Last year OU and Texas could have had a rematch to shut the crybabies up, and this year (sorry nebraska fans) looks the same. The top 3 or 4 teams in the South are all better than the top north teams. Instead of seeing nebraska get killed in a big 12 championship, who wouldnt rather see Texas vs. Tech/OU??? Just seems more fair.

by RdrPwr on Oct 17, 2009 9:54 PM CDT reply actions

Or a re-alignment

The Big XII is suffering as a football conference thanks to the disparity between the divisions. The North needs to be as strong as the South if the Big XII is going to become the premier football conference. Right now, we may be little better than the Big 8 or the SWC were.

by Thorne on Oct 17, 2009 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Just can't be done.

If you think our gate would suffer w/o playing ags, whorns every year, look what would hsppen to the 50,000 seater teams of the North.

not our fault

that they have made it a tradition to suck…..

by RdrPwr on Oct 17, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I looked at the disparity between north and south attendance at one point in the past few months but with either average attendance and full capacity attendance, big 12 south teams have about 10,000 more per game than north teams. And that is without Techs additions and without OSU’s.

At this rate, just because of the “arms race” I don’t see how anyone but NU can have CONSISTENT success against the south. But in the future NU could be dominant at some point. They have the history and program. But the rest of the north teams not so much. I guess Mizzou maybe…

by RdrPwr on Oct 17, 2009 10:05 PM CDT reply actions

We have a D.....

It took Ruff a while to get the players he needs but TTech is really playing as a team. Our true freshman are so good!! I really think we win out and if we do then in the end this year will be different from last because we finally performed when we were suppose too but this year we really win because of team play. SS wasn’t great but creates enough space to really help. I wish he would run up field alittle more( Leach hates that) but it would help our running game to have another weapon! Wreck" Em Tech.

by techgolf44 on Oct 17, 2009 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

I think Sticks should start, at least until he loses. I think Leach will start him — even though I think Leach has a tendency to favor the guy he picked before the season started — until he loses.

I like Potts and I feel bummed out whenever I see him on the sideline, because I think most of his troubles this season (turnovers and sacks, mostly) are not entirely his fault. Sticks has shown that he performs better in the 2009 version of Texas Tech’s offense though, and for the sake of the team, he should remain the starter.

by boar_amour on Oct 17, 2009 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

Pretty much my thoughts, too. Potts had the games where the O-line was in complete disarray.

by TechFirst on Oct 17, 2009 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions

i dont agree with you… our Oline was horrible tonight and it showed and when sticks came in on the end of the 2nd quarter against NM you could see how he just killed the score in 2 quarters… something that potts could not do. sticks brings alot of tempo.. he completed 14 out of his 16 first throws on the first half. what does that tell anyone. is that like 90% completion? that is insane! i would not be surprised if he wins heismen next season. i would not be surprised if we go to the nationals next year. go sticks!

by cfraider on Oct 17, 2009 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m not saying Potts would be as good as Sticks, just that Potts wasn’t the blame for everything bad that happened.

by TechFirst on Oct 18, 2009 7:21 AM CDT up reply actions

What both of you are saying is valid. However, Bones (sounds better than sticks right?) bring energy. He can move. We will hare more success with him. Potts has potential to be great and I’m a big fan of the guy. He just needs to bring what he had in HS and practice to the game. At this point Bones brings it and Potts doesn’t as much. That being said, Potts against UT was fantastic and no one can take that away. I’m a fan of both guys, sometimes these decisions suck. But Bones is the better guy at this point.

by logan5555 on Oct 18, 2009 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

First, I agree. Sticks is a terrible nickname. Secondly, had Potts played even one series yesterday, we may be writing his obituary. The line had no success keeping the QB in the pocket for long. If Sheff could not have moved, he would have been killed. Obviously, Sheffield needs to work on his habit of scrambling INTO pressure at times, but it still saved his life. Potts is good, but Sheff is better. That’s not a crime.

62-14 K-St over atm

Man, anybody that could dominate that K St team must be pretty darn good. Oh wait, never mind. It was only us, pollsters.

Let’s see. If we beat K.St by 52 and they beat atm by 48, we should win next week by a smooth 100. Then we get Kanss at home. We’ll be on a roll for the two OK schools.

you know for a group of people as anti-math nerd as football fans are

they sure are quick to embrace the transitive property, despite it hardly ever having significant bearing on reality. We got a great win on the road, now let’s not screw it up too badly by sleeping on an opponent that Tech can’t afford to lose against.

"Team A defeated team B, and team B defeated team C. Therefore, team A will defeat team C."

Here is a picture of the Sooner defense demonstrating the dangers of mis-applying the transient property to one Edward Britton as part of Mike Leach’s enhanced tutoring program:

thank you

I think I understand math now LOL

I got your transitive right here LOL

But you’re right about keeping their heads right. Our little brother North Dakota played an NAIA team today and was favored for the first time in a while. Got beat 28-13.

Darn!

I was pulling for the Fighting Sioux to win out. Oh well. They are still my second favorite college team. I will continue to root for them.

I should point out

that the NAIA team they played (Sioux Falls) is undefeated and has been a regular in the nat’l title game in recent years.

Great Defensive Effort

Ruffin has definitely sparked our D. They are playing remarkable right now. Offensively, we need to be more consistent. In the 3rd quarter we couldn’t get much going, good thing Nebraska’s offense is awful. I hope we run the ball down the aggies throat, since they gave up 6 rushing tds and made k state look like all americans.

by jgome21 on Oct 17, 2009 10:34 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry guys

the question was is NU offense that bad or Tech D that good

by ezed on Oct 17, 2009 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

a little of this, a little of that

Tech’s D-Line really did a great job against NU’s O-Line, which until today I didn’t think was a liability for Nebraska, but now I’m not so sure. Less encouraging was the benching and then re-benching of Zac Lee, which really suggested that something deeply dysfunctional was going on with Nebraska’s offense over and above what Tech’s D was doing. So I guess my answer to your question is that I have no satisfactory answer to your question.

That’s what happens when we actually show some class…..although im not saying we should do so with UT, aTm, or OU. Hell or Ok. St. since they just copy off of our traditions haha.

by RdrPwr on Oct 17, 2009 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Who woulda thought?

If someone had told you we’d have only 259 yds in total offense and that NU would have more yards than we did, would you have predicted a win? A win the TV guys are calling a domination? I don’t know how to react having a team that can play D.

I have to feel a little for the Husker fans. They were sky high about having a good team after so many down years. We all know what it feels like to have your heart ripped out on nat’l TV. If it was UT, I wouldn’t care. But the corn people are pretty good folks..

Posted at the AJ site....

This is a great win, one I and some other Tech fans anticipated while many Tech fans felt Tech would lose. But Tech used every opportunity to score despite going up against one of the top defensive teams in the country. Neither team did offensively what they had been doing, but Tech made the most of what was being given to them by the NU defense. It wasn’t the typical "pretty" game, but a hard fought, well played game in enemy territory that should be considered one of the best ever played by any Tech team. Should this team carry this type of play on in every remaining game, a big time BCS bowl game could be in the future.

NO ONE in the media or anywhere across the country was giving Tech a chance at winning 10 or 11 games. But, if they win out, that is exactly what they can do. If they do this, then everyone is going to have to see Tech a "reloading" after good years, not "rebuilding". BIG DIFFERENCE!

The toughest remaining regular season game appears to be the one against Okie State. With Tech’s defense continuing this level of play throughout the rest of the season, there is no way Okie State will keep up, even in Stillwater. With the stumbling this week by OU, KU, Baylor and A&M, Texas Tech needs only to keep their heads on straight and play as hard the rest of the way as they have played so far. Doing so will enable them to have one more "DREAM SEASON", just like last year’s. So, GO TECH! WRECK ‘EM!

Still excited about this year....

but can next season hurry up and get here?! Im seriously thinking national championship. all we really lose is some Offensive linemen, and they are our weakest link so it doesnt hurt that bad.

we loose carter though… :(

...but gain the mysterious luchadore "Crazy Boy"

aka “El Loco De Tulancingo”, out of a JUCO in Guadalajara. He’s still got 3 years of eligibility, but it might take Matt Moore half a season to explain why his signature move, “The Spanish Fly” is not a legal blocking technique.

Will Muschamp is recruiting him too, if that makes any difference.

by mojavereject on Oct 17, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I love him as a person, but he really isn’t all that great of a lineman. Our entire O-line lets the D make contact first, even on runs. I know in HS i was taught that every play on the oline you need to be the one to make the first hit. Our guys all stand up and try to benchpress the d-linemen. I’m way out of shape and too small for NCAA D line, but I can use my hands. I honestly believe I could be past our O-line 3 of 5 times simply by staying low and using my hands to knock their arms away. Who is our O-line coach by the way?

by RdrPwr on Oct 17, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Run vs Pass Blocking

The purpose of pass blocking isn’t to make first contact. In the pass game, the linemen’s job is to provide a pocket and time for the quarterback. You don’t do that by forcing first contact because you are more susceptible to stunts and twists. By using wide splits and delaying contact, it gives the OL time to determine if any of these tactics are being utilized so they can be picked up. Also, every bit of time that passes before the OL are even contacted is time for the quarterback. It’s all about buying any bit of time that you can.

by TracySaulRulz on Oct 18, 2009 8:47 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand that, but step into the guy coming our way is all I’m saying. Sit back, check it out, then explode. Our guys sit back with their arm’s extended like they are going to do something. Isn’t that the last thing you want to do as a linemen, extend your arms? That makes it way too easy to swat those arms off, where as if we stepped into them we would be in tight, making it much harder to get rid of us.

by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that's how the line is

taught to block. Get your hands of the defender and ride him out to create the pocket. I think OL coach Moore has been teaching that since he’s been at TT.

by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

We really needed OU to win. Then we would be talking about a possible big 12 championship. At this point its really out of the question. Our best scenario for this season is we win out and the voters think two big 12 teams deserve a bcs bowl and we play in the fiesta. No way UT loses twice. And of course this is a best case scenario. Winning at OSU, at home against OU, and possibly even a dangerous KU team are going to be very tough games. And I sure hope we don’t look past A&M. We need to keep on a roll and dominate them.

by logan5555 on Oct 18, 2009 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

The big 12 live guys are giving us tons of credit after today. Say we will definitely be a force in the big 12 south when its all said and done.

i am very happy for the win but its really bothering me what happend on the 3 and 4 quarter. sheffield was 14/16 completions on the first quarter or two… how did it go from a 90% go a 69% so fast… i do give credit to sticks anyways

by cfraider on Oct 18, 2009 5:23 AM CDT reply actions

very, very conservative playcalling. It paid off in the 4th quarter as we killed the rest of the time to go up by 31 later. Took a bit for batch and sheff to get into a rhythm, but once they didn’t, Neb couldn’t stop us.

Next Year

The biggest worry I have is the O-line. The ones we will lose to graduation are the good ones – Carter, Winn, and Byrne. Even if we assume one more year will make the weak left side get better, that still leaves us with replacing the right side. We’ve seen what even one weak spot can do. I know Pearlie Graves is well-respected, but he’ll be green and untested and we still deperately need some depth.

BTW, I like it that Carter got rid of the silly face paint and cut off the mohawk. Maybe getting suspended made him grow up a little bit.

by TechFirst on Oct 18, 2009 7:32 AM CDT reply actions

That face paint was neat once. Stupid the rest of the time. I think he probably caught an ear full from the other guys about how he looked like a 12-year old. You can’t intimidate D-I football players with face paint.

by Tech92 on Oct 18, 2009 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Not sure why you bring up Pearlie Graves, he’s a defensive tackle…

There’s one thing that we have going for us: only one of our 3 seniors has started every game at his position: Marlon Winn at RT. Carter’s gone back and forth between right and left guard and so Edwards and Okafor have gotten a world of playing time. I think Keown has looked great in relief of Byrnes. If he doesn’t keep it up, though, he’s got Olson, another senior next year who can play center as well.

We’re looking a lot better for replacing Carter and Byrnes and Winn than we did for replacing Reed and Vasquez is all I’m saying.

by kayakyakr on Oct 18, 2009 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

And

Louis Vasquez is starting for the San Diego Chargers.

I'm not worthy. Really.

Does anybody know whatever happened to Reed?

I haven’t been able to find any information on him since Tech’s pro day……

Spoke with him early August.

He is still at Tech on an athletic scholarship. Still built like a brick shithouse…. think he has given up on sports though, really concentrating on that degree. An amazing guy especially considering all he’s been through. Easily on my top 5 favorite people list.
