First Ranking of Season
After the systematic beating of Nebraska, voters stood up and took notice. Tech enters the AP poll for the first time this season at 21. This was a hard earned ranking for a season that has been a challenge and had a few bumps along the way. The fruits of their labor is now rewarded.
Of almost more interesting note is the fact that 3-3 Oklahoma is still somehow, someway, inexplicably ranked in the top 25 at number 25. For you research geeks, has there ever been a 3-3 team ranked in the top 25 AP poll?

I would make a comment to why OU is still in the top 25....but it might offend some people..lol
Congrats guys…you deserve it.

Tenn was ranked
despite 3 losses in the 2005 AP poll.

I'm looking at it..
Yep. Also Florida was ranked after a 2-2 start in 2002. It’s still Wrong though..with a capital W.

Tennessee finished
the season 5-6 (3-5) ad obviously unranked.
Mebbe the Sooners should be worried more about making a bowl than about making the NC game or Big 12 CG. lol.

If they are still thinking NC someone has been hiding the final scores from them for about 3 weeks.

I hate it
but in OU’s defense they have lost three games to a combined 6 points to teams that were all ranked at the time….. Texas (although they dont play like it), was 2/3 saturday, and OU held it close minus 3 major starters.

3 losses
still count as THREE losses though.
by Red_Raider on Oct 18, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Margin of victory aside, they’ve lost to every ranked team they have played against this year in every way possible: at home, neutral site, and away. They have beaten 0 ranked teams on the road or otherwise.
I’m not saying Oklahoma is a bad team, but at some point you know, its not enough that you played against tough teams, you need to actually have some wins. Oklahoma is having a down year, everybody is getting up to play the Sooners because they were so good last year, and they’re not making the plays they need to make.
by merrik on Oct 18, 2009 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just for accuracy
OU has not lost at home. They lost twice on neutral fields in Dallas and once in Miami. I agreed they shouldn’t be ranked.
by adam24 on Oct 18, 2009 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is no reason for OU to be ranked. Just switch their name to Tech and they would be ranked about 35th at best. Give me a break.
by logan5555 on Oct 18, 2009 2:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I dont think they deserve the spot, but I saw it coming. Their history plays a big role to the voters. If they stay ranked it makes us look that much better when we whoop up on ‘em at the Jones this year. I’m thankful since Kansas got beat, we need all the help we can get. If the big 12 gets two BCS berths, we got our first one!
by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 2:32 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Kansas is still somehow ranked though
despite beating noone and losing to a pathetic Colorado squad.
Having said that, Briscoe shud’ve made that last second grab in the end zone to win the game though.
Damn it…now the Sooners get to beat their first ranked team of the season…argh.
by Red_Raider on Oct 18, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haven’t checked the rankings yet. That will move OU up…. now as long as we beat them, BCS is a definite possibility for us, which puts us sitting pretty next season.

You're right...
Didn’t think about that.
I think Georgia had a rough start in 2007 (2 losses) but then they navigated thru the rest of their schedule unbeaten and got an at-large sugar bowl berth.
by Red_Raider on Oct 18, 2009 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yup… and the big 12 usually gets one at large berth anyhow….
by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
current ESPN bowl projections do not have the big 12 with two BCS bowl bids. Which who cares at this point but still…
by logan5555 on Oct 18, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
as long as boise st and tcu win out, they might take an extra spot from the big 12. Possibly. Of course this is the bcs, so there’s no telling what is going to happen because being rational has no place.

I'd give anything
to see a 10-2 TTU team go against a 12-0 TCU team. That would be God awesome.
Georgia did not play a single ranked team in 2007 (thats what ESPN says) while going 10-2 (6-2) and ended up in the Sugar bowl vs. unbeaten BCS buster Hawaii.
If Tech goes 10-2, we’ll be (7-1) and not (6-2). Hope we get to play 12-0 TCU in the Fiesta bowl.

Y'all just thought Nebraska had a good D...
Have you SEEN TCU play? I hear they are on our schedule for next year…. not gonna lie im a bit worried about them.
by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I haven’t gotten to see them yet, but it sure would be nice if they played a really good team. Clemson and Virginia are not great. At least Nebraska has played Mizzou and Virginia Tech.
I’m not saying TCU isn’t good, because i’m sure they are very good. No team gets this far undefeated without being a team to talk about. It will be nice to see them play at BYU this week. Then we will have a better idea of how great their Defense is. If they shut them down and keep it up the rest of the season (especially against utah), they deserve the bcs more than Boise St (whose ONLY quality win/game was over oregon).
And yes, i’m a little worried about TCU for next year. Although our schedule sets up nicely with tcu and houston at home. if we get by those, ou and ut are our last two games of the season.

Without
The undisputed illegal hit on Potts(where I think we would have scored) -TEXAS game and the botched 4Th and goal we are looking at undefeated status guys. But a loss is a loss.Where are the props that I called it about right last night on the post game tread that we would be ranked around #20.that’s OK…(cough),,,NOT REALLY.I am only looking at WINS not rankings.Let’s just pack the stadium on Saturday niter…..

Am I the only one pissed at Geral Myers for moving the Texas game up so early?
by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I said at the time that the early game does more for UT than for Tech. I totally agree with you that it was not in our best interest. Losing on national TV does not do any good for a program. Especially with the fact we normally have 8-9 games on TV every year anyway.
by Tech92 on Oct 18, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Myers kind of assumed it would be a down year for us and wanted this game to be played up as much as possible. What kind of AD has no faith in his school?
by RdrPwr on Oct 18, 2009 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Can you believe how the Horns are going their their schedule unscathed by catching lucky breaks?
Their defense is good but their offense is downright pathetic. They’re winning their games coz their opponents are beating themselves.
If they win the Big 12 (meaning beat OSU), I hope they respresent the Big 12 well in the NC game.
by Red_Raider on Oct 18, 2009 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OSU will be hard for TEXAS just like they will us.TEXAS could loose that game. And I think MIZZOU is a trap game for TEXAS…juz sayin
by slycanyon on Oct 18, 2009 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
tought to say after last night…. but they play aTm at kyle field this year, and they tend to bring out the best of the Aggies. Wishful thinking maybe, but that could be another trap game for them.

How is Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow even mentioned in the Heisman discussion at this point? Their performance has been okay, nothing to cry about. But neither has it been stellar.

can't let the stats get in the way of a good story
at this point the Heisman is basically the ‘Clean-Cut White Quarterback’ Trophy

I think you go with form
and with that I think you gotta go with someone from from bama, they are good team and I think they’ll win the SEC, like ingram, mcilroy or mclain although I like Kellen Moore from Boise as well, even though I know they’ll never win

About packing the stadium...
Are we sold out yet? A&M is a really boring rival. Hope we sell out.
FSN refused to air our game since Neb was ranked and not us. Now that the situation is reversed, do we get TV coverage? If yes, does that change the game time?
by Red_Raider on Oct 18, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seems like this year, more than ever, a loss to an unranked team doesn’t drop you very far. Voters seem exceedingly forgiving.
by Tech92 on Oct 18, 2009 2:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
They won’t be forgiving if we lose to an unranked team. Mark my words.
by logan5555 on Oct 18, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, if we had been in the polls all year long we may have gotten the same grace.
by Tech92 on Oct 18, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well thats my point. The reason we would drop out if lost to an unranked team is the same reason we weren’t ranked to start the season. Its really shocking the KANSAS gets more respect that we do.

we will take care of Kansas …..just wait….

when other teams r done with them and theyre unranked… :-(
by Red_Raider on Oct 18, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I mean we can beat them this year I think. My point is just we are always on an uphill climb. Meanwhile other teams get more benefit of the doubt. Its annoying.
by logan5555 on Oct 18, 2009 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
To give Kansas a little credit and to look at it from the perspective of an unbiased (smirk) voter, look at who Kansas was returning and who we were replacing. Makes sense.

Hey
Missed you at the open game thread yesterday. Wanted to feed you more ‘crow’. Haha.
Hope all is well with you.
I'm not worthy. Really.

Yeah, I was pretty off on yesterday’s prediction. The crow tastes best if you put some dry rub on it and slow cook in the smoker. And I am happy about that! Sister was in town from San Diego and needed time with her niece, so I could only watch on TV and entertain them.

We need to PACK the stadium this week…You think they would drop the price a little on the new seats…..
by slycanyon on Oct 18, 2009 2:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
There were tickets through the chamber of commerce for $50 but I think you had to own a business or something. Anyways those are long gone. They sold like hot cakes. From what I last heard we had 5,000 seats left to sell as of before the NU game. We won’t even come close to selling all those (at least thats my guess).
I think I am going to email Hance and suggest dropping the prices, at least for next year, on those seats. If you can make the same revenue from selling more seats at a lower price then its worth it.

Sagarin ratings
Sagarin is usually pretty good at getting to who is who and disregarding reputation. Check out the newest rating and you’ll see Tech rated 15th, with no one left on the schedule within 15 rank of us. OU? No. 30.
One side note: Techis 0-1 vs top 10 and 1-1 versus top 20. Nebraksa is 20. UH? 36.

Sort of
The ranking that matters with Sagarin for BCS purposes is ELO-Chess, and Tech comes in at number 30. But also look at Texas at number 15 in ELO-Chess.

I don't understand why..
Ohio State ranked? They almost lost to unranked Navy at home, lost to ranked USC at home and got beaten by unranked Purdue.
Both our losses were to ranked teams on the road #2 and #17.
Why is OSU ahead of Houston?? Both have 1 loss and Houston beat OSU.
OU is unranked and Kansas is ranked.. hmm.
We’re #22 in Harris and #24 in USA Today. Anyone know what our computer ranking is?

Wanting OU to be ranked
It will be good for OU to be rank wen they come to Lubbock in Nov. Top 25 is all about preseason rankings. Look at that sorry a$$ Boise team. How does college football allow that team to be in the top five. They would be in the bottom of the Big 12 and SEC.
Its all about preseason rankings thats why Boise is high and OU is still #25.

Unless it would be on FSC or pay per view, it will not be on TV. The networks and Big XII broadcast partners selected the games they are contractually required to carry sometime early last week.
Again, this is not opinion, this is fact. Let’s drop this wondering if it’s gonna be on TV thing. That was settled last week.

BCS rankings
The rankings this year just clearly show how stupid and biased the whole ranking system is. I’m amazed that it is SO bad this year that today I heard Mack Brown commenting on how it doesn’t even necessarily pick the top two sometimes even the top 8 teams (altho I’m sure that was at least partly a dig at their current rank and their failure to make the NC game last year). But the whole “ranking” system is a joke.
