I’m not sure if I’d qualify some reporter’s twitter as the ‘official word’ like his employer does. I’m nervous because SS was limping around there at the end, but I’m gonna have to hear it from a better source before I hit the liquor store.

I don’t disagree with you TechFirst. Until Potts trots out there to start the game Saturday, there’s always a chance this is bunk. But I am pretty confident that a news site would not post that if they didn’t have it on REALLY good authority that it was true. Sure, it’s been done, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire – almost always.

I would wait till fox news

Lets wait and see if AJ tomorrow and Fox news tonight concur on this story. Typicall news channel 11 is not a huge tech fan. They cover high school football in greater detail than they cover tech. They only cover Tech when there is bad news. So, I would wait for other sources as well.

Agreed..

However, I’m not quite willing to consider this game a gimme. True, A&M isn’t a strong team at the moment, but they did test OSU. As fans, we all know of the unpredictable nature of college football.

Truth in twittering aside, let’s hope Potts is poised and prepared.

but do we know FOR SURE he is cleared to play. I know he was suited up but no one has “Tweeted” on who the starter is for this week!

One thing's for sure...

we’ll never hear it officially from Leach.

Chris Level (redraidersports) is reporting:

-new captains did not include a qb
-Leach said he would name his starter on Saturday
-there is a lot of rumors re:Sheffield and there is a situation, but the severity is something nobody knows

by natkcole on Oct 19, 2009 3:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I had the sense that Potts was ready to play last week. He was wearing a uniform like he could play.

If he gets the start Saturday, he will be ready. Perhaps the time away has helped him get a better perspective on how to handly his role.

Best wishes to Sheffield for quick and complete recovery. I will add both Byrnes and McDaniel to those good wishes as well.

I am hoping we can find someone who can fill the role at LT !!!!

I’m not buying a tweet as official news—i’m like Tech92. Until game time starts, I will see our starting QB.

I’m actually elated that we have two quality starting QB’s on this team—look at OU, Nebraska, and Kansas State. Their qb situation has hindered their teams all this year.

Go Tech!

I’m not worried.

Tech will rally behind Potts and we’ll take care of business against A&M. I’m a little worried about Kansas but we’ll be fine. Kansas is going to be a good test for us but there’s no reason we shouldn’t win. Our defense is much better than KU’s and I see no reason we can’t take care of Sharp, Briscoe, Reesing, Meier, etc. We did last year, and we have most of the same personnel back from that team of 08.

Looking long term

Is where this would scare me…..if Potts lights it up for 500 yards and we then don’t go back to Sticks. I truly feel Sticks can lead us to a very special season, and while I think Potts is tough and a game…..he throws off his back foot and is not mobile and holds on to the ball too long. We will wreck ’em either way……just loved where we were going.

by oldschoolraider on Oct 19, 2009 4:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed

No knock against Potts (he is a great player) but when you watch Sticks play you get the sense that he will make something happen, he commands the field well. His play is reminiscent of BJ Symons. Potts does throw off his back foot and at times seems uncertain.
I put more stock in Sticks.

2-3 Weeks would put him back in time for OSU

We get a bye week after Kansas, so I really hope he’s ready to go on the road against Okie State. That’s where we really need him. Potts is 0-2 in road games.

how soon they forget

Can we ALL just take a deep breath and relax?

Potts WAS leading the nation in passing when he got hisself concussed.

If a guy can’t practice then he can’t play and that is essentially what happened to The ‘Stache. I always felt he’d be back for the A&M game and I have a sneaking suspicion that this is what the Pirate Captain had planned all along. It wouldnt surprise me one bit to find out that this whole Sticks injury is a ruse to re-install the guy THE CAPTAIN himself annointed the started in spring practice.

Lets keep the backhanded Potts rallying cries to a minimum and get behind the guy the way were after the UT game

beat me to it

Leach selected Potts for a reason at the beginning of the season. A lot has changed since then, especially up front on the o-line. Sheffield was not exactly without flaw on Saturday vs. NU. No knock on Sheffield or the admirable job he has done at the helm, but I still think much of his success is due to the improved performance alond the o-line. If Potts is not harrassed and is unable to put up similar numbers to Sheffield’s verus KSU, and/ore the team seems flat (making a lot of mental errors) then I will concede. But I would hope that at some point the success is not due to playing behind an emotional leader, but guys stepping up and doing their jobs

The big 12 live guys

were definitely praising Sheffy alot more than they ever did Potts. Maybe Potts has learned to throw down field sometimes too instead of all screens. Or to made a read instead of locking on to his receiver and throwing off his back foot.

by RdrPwr on Oct 19, 2009 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

HOW MANY time are you gonna trot the “throws off his back foot” mullarkey? If thats the kind of argument against him that you feel its gonna take to convince people then you have a big hill to climb.

Im not saying he doesnt do it. But he was leading the nation in passing while throwing off his back foot. If you guys wanna back Sticks because he pulled us out of the fire then thats fine. Just remember. He, like everyone on the team, JUST DID HIS JOB. (stepping in while the starter cant go)

by Tortilla Pirate on Oct 19, 2009 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s not my only argument against the guy. 3 Picks to ND, 2 to New Mexico. How many passes did he complete where the receiver was 10+ yards deep? His head followed his go-to receiver virtually every play, and he freaked out in the pocket and just stood there with “happy feet”. Sheffield may not be the most fundamentally sound player ever, but he seems to fit our offense THIS YEAR better. I also like the way Sheffield seems to really motivate the team and be a leader, but that is another argument. Potts has a ton of potential, and I havent completely given up on him. He just needs to improve his play in games and become the type of offensive leader Leach talked about early on. I realize that his numbers were alright, although he threw what…..85% of the time if not more? Of course he is going to have a ton of yards. He played decently at times, great in some, but horrible in others. All in one game. All I ask is that he gain some consistency, talk to the team and/or the coaches on the sideline, and begin to make reads and throw to who’s open, not to who he thinks will be open. I truly hope that he does well and lives up to his potential.

by RdrPwr on Oct 19, 2009 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh...

it doesnt really matter at this point, but sticks has 12 TD’s in 2.5 games to Pott’s 13 in 4.5. Potts did have Texas and Houston in that span though.

by RdrPwr on Oct 19, 2009 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But

can you seriously say Potts wouldnt have had at least SIMILAR numbers against weak opposition like that?

He just needs to improve his play in games and become the type of offensive leader Leach talked about early on. I realize that his numbers were alright

then how about giving him the chance to do just that and let him get behind the same OLine Sticks had?

If you really think Potts has no chance of reaching that potential he has then by all means go ahead and give up on the young man.

can you seriously say Potts wouldnt have had at least SIMILAR numbers against weak opposition like that?

I don’t see why not? He played against teams that were at least as bad as K-State and did not have the statistical domination that Sticks did. Unless and until Potts does anything to rival what Sheff did against K-State, there really is no powerful argument that he’s the better QB.

Given the amount of time Nebraska spent in our backfield, is there any doubt whatsoever that we lose the game with Potts at QB? I ask rhetorically, b/c there is always some doubt, but I am morally convinced that Sheffield can and Potts cannot win last week’s game. Is the same true against A&M? Hopefully not, but if we are playing an opponent with a pass rush there is no doubt who I want at QB. Potts stares down receivers for way too long, can’t go through his progressions unless he has a day to throw, and makes mistakes when pressured. With injuries along the offensive line, Potts’ problems with escaping pressure are only going to be magnified.

There are a lot of things that Potts does well. Dealing with a collapsing pocket? Not one of them.

I am 100% behind Potts and support him as the QB and couldn’t be more pleased that we’ve got a guy that good, with that much confidence from the coaching staff to come in and replace Sheffield. Too many talented QBs is a great problem to have, and we’re blessed as a result, in large part because Mike Leach has done such a great job getting QBs to come out to Lubbock.

Lighten up francis

I’m entitled to my opinion just as you are….I like Potts but I like the mobility and the touch of sticks better. I was at the game in Lincoln and he can drop a pass on a dime. I will cheer whole heartedly for TP but believe that Sticks has some intagibles that Potts can’t learn. I am happy Mike is the coach he is and we have the depth.

by oldschoolraider on Oct 19, 2009 9:25 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

UT game aside

Potts loses to UH on road. Sheffield wins at NU. Whether either had the exact same enviornment in re linemen, whatever, Sticks is a winner and makes everyone around him perform. You could throw BC out there at QB and I’m gonna get behind him because I’m pulling for the name on the front of the jersey, riding for the brand so to speak cuz of the sheepskin on my wall, but if we’re actually having a football conversation, cuz that’s what we do on DTN, I’m putting my two bits in for the skinny kid. If TP can work out his few liabilities, then maybe he’s the guy, but the eyeball test and the results for 10 or 11 quarters make me feel all warm and fuzzy, kind of like when I take a Lortab.

My second point is TV for Ag:
Yep, this is a schitty ayunem squad, and PROBABLY won’t be good TV, BUT we need every aggie throttling to ALWAYS be on TV for the next crop of Texas kids to see that aggies are losers and Red Raiders are winners when it comes time to chose between the two.

Because, like you said, we know exactly what we have (and more importantly, don’t have) with Potts. Good QB, not so much as a leader – Leach and other players have hinted as much. Did you read even a teeny bit of what the players said about Sheffield and how the team responds to him?

Is the sky falling? No, but I liked our odds of having an unexpectedly good year with Sheff a crap load more than with Potts.

by Tech92 on Oct 19, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sticks

Sticks is good. Potts is good. I’m not worried about beating A&M with Potts at the helm; I don’t think it will make much of a difference. Kansas? Probably not either. However, starting with Oklahoma State I’d feel better with Sticks in.

Sticks has been better this season for Tech than Potts, statistically speaking. Even leaving Texas out for Potts Sticks still has better numbers. Plus there’s the eyeball test. It’s not a personal dislike or anything, I just like to see Texas Tech win and I feel like we have a better chance with Sticks.

If Potts gets the start I hope he passes for 1000 yards and 20 touchdowns on Saturday.

by merrik on Oct 19, 2009 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed as well.

I am all for TP stepping up and being “all that he can be” against the fake soldiers at aTm (pun intended). And somewhere on this page someone mentioned Potts being mobile when he came in, yes it was advertised. Maybe after sitting out a couple weeks he will have snapped out of it and realized what he has to do to get this team (and the fans) behind him. There is no doubt he has more potential that Sticks, just hasn’t showed it to me in a game yet. And btw sticks came in in new mexico with the same o-line potts had, see the difference he made there? But don’t get me wrong, I’m backing whoever steps on the field in red and black Saturday. It just bothers me to see people playing down Sticks’ performance. It seems like just because Leach said Potts was the man, it must be true. Leach also said go for it on 4th against Houston……
But all arguments aside, lets just say this. Come on ’Tech. Wreck the “wrecking crew”!!!

Doesn't really matter what we may think about SS vs TP vs Doege

We can only play the ones that are healthy. I’ll be rooting for whoever that is. The way I see it, we have two opponents coming up that we should be able to beat easily no matter who’s playing QB. Then we have a bye week before playing OSU and OU. The way this season has gone so far, there’s no telling what the situation may be by then.

Potts

will be fine. We may have forgotten how great he played before getting hurt. He may not be perfect, but against A&M he could easily put up 600 yards and 8 touchdowns, if he is not taken out to get Doege some playing time in the 4th quarter or sooner. I seriously feel that if Tech enters this game with a strong desire to destroy aggy, they will, regardless of who is QBing. And Potts is pretty darn good, and we all know it. Keep the faith. I saw him on the sidelines against NU and he was really into the game, showing more emotion than I remember him having. After missing a couple of games, he is going to come back with a vengeance. Thanks Don. While you’re at it why don’t you give A&M our playbook and the first ten plays scripted out. Or just hold up signs the whole game telling the opposing teams what play we are running next. There is a reason injuries aren’t disclosed. It’s the same reason teams don’t huddle up right on the ball where the defense can hear.

Potts will be fine. After what has happened the last two weeks I think Doege or Karam would be fine.

TP cannot handle pressure, he might be alright against aTm but remember they will have nothing to lose and everything to play for against us, but I am more worried about the future, I don’t think TP can get us past Kansas, Okie State or OU. We get max another win with TP—Baylor and finish season 7-5 and go to a bowl game. and lose the bowl game because TP can’t play under pressure again.
Then we have a new basketball season coming up to cheer for and then the whole of next year where we will have Sticks start at QB hopefully.
In contrast, if Sticks gets healthy and he starts against A&M, OU, KU, OSU we win out the season, finish 10-2 and probably head to a BCS bowl or atleast the cotton bowl. What a difference attitude makes!!

by jef on Oct 19, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is it even possible that Sticks is going to be healthy by saturday?

I know we don’t release information about injuries, which is why I’m still not buying this until game time. But is it seriously possible that Sticks can start? If I remember correctly (and I ask myself that a lot) Potts was able to check down and make good play calls against Texas before Kindle got in the backfield. Does anybody else remember this?

GOOD POSTS JEF

What we have seen in Potts earlier, is what we are going to get !! There are leaders and there are followers,, We are very lucky to have him as a backup or mop up qb, but not a starter for Techs offense. Your right ,he cannot get us past the tough teams in our conference. I agree, i think he will be ok against A-M,but after that were in a heap of caca.

by Dr. Mark on Oct 19, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Has everyone forgotten the Rice game?

I think Rice and KSU are pretty comparable. Potts’s total yards and completion % were lower, but he also did not throw a pick-6 versus Rice. Difference in score is a FG and a Doege TD in cleanup. Sticks did not get a cleanup TD versus Rice. Does that mean that Doege is the best of them all?

Both guys are good QBs – each doing different things well. We are going to be fine against whomever we play with either guy pulling the trigger. This team has come a long way since the beginning of the year. The o-line situation has been settled, Carter is playing like a senior and being a leader, the receivers are now running their routes correctly. U of H debacle was a turning point. Sheffield has reaped a lot of benefits from the early growing pains. Now, let’s see what TP can do. We might be surprised.

Not yet anyway. Let’s give Potts a few drives and see what happens. This might end up being the best thing that happened to him / us.

He has the ability to make plays, he just needs to settle down and make the throws / reads to get the job done.

seeing that he played 7-on-7 his senior year helps, although no alternative to having the big boys try to kill you. But, did you notice his rushing yards?! Does anyone else see a trend starting here in our young QB recruits? And of course during his time period at Crane he had to be around Coach Tank, that makes anyone a man. It was a sad day when he left my HS for Crane…….

7 on 7 is a definite + in my book.

Some of the film that I was able to watch show him to be a gamer and willing to scramble for the first down or the pass. Agile and quick feet and he makes good reads.

I never in my life thought that I would be doing research 3 down in our depth chart frantically . On that note, where is my drop down depth chart Seth?

I remember seeing something on ESPN about a college basketball player that was playing QB for a school. A fairly large school at that. It may have been Duke or something. Anyway, he was athletic and a gamer. He took on the starting role and did a bang up job not having played football for quite some time. This could be promise for Doege. Thoughts? That’s not saying that I won’t have a beer before bed. HAHA!!

It pays the bills and lets me spend countless hours online thinking about football.

Hurricane Season is downright boring for me sometimes.

Maybe so, but engineering degree and swearing off marriage until 30

should help with that. I can dream right?! and are these videos on exclusive sites? If not, you mind posting some links in a fanpost?

Are you ME, PE, or EE?

I’ll post some links here shortly.

MTEC

mechanical technology. Same classes as ME but a more hands on approach apparently. They lured me in with more money, so I bit. One of three in my graduating class, but im the top! They say its basically ME jobs, but easier to avoid a desk if you want to.

I have two friends that were ME grads. One at Tech and the other at UT.

Tech – desiging down hole drilling tools for the drilling company I used to work for

UT – designing tools for Boeing on some fighter jet.

The links won’t post in the FanPost section, so I’ll try and put them here so they can be viewed.

Dream jobs

involve Boeing and Bell Helicopters…. but beginning to see petroleum as a pretty good choice as well. Looking at two petroleum related internships for this summer.

Petroleum is where it's at. I'll say that because I've been in the industry my whole adult life.

Father in law is an Engineer @ EOG and also a VP, my brother in law is graduating from UT in the spring with a Petroleum Engineering degree and going to work for EOG too.

Steady Men steady

This is when you see the real coaching. Raiders just line up, run through the execution and complete the play. Whether its Potts , Doege or Karam the same basic game is in place. We could see few more touches for the Running Backs in order to break some tendencies but almost nothing different on the intensity of the defensive scheme. In fact l’ll bet Leach says something along these lines for the pre game.“We just worry about what we can do” Raiders juts need to focus, reset, execute and do it over and over. ATM is in desperation mode. Raiders need to stuff them quickly and get the requisite 2 plus scores up then play down hill. Wreck em baby!

Oh, my. I know Leach has a rep for working in QBs…but this Doege kid…for the love of God, please let Potts be cleared.

Scary Good/Bad Scenario

Doege starts, throws 6 touchdowns and makes Sheffield look shaky in comparison… Leach pulls him in the third quarter and yanks Karam’s redshirt to get him some reps in case he has to fill in this year. Karam throws 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Now, whose bandwagon do we get on?

There is some pluses to Tech being QB U
