Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 10.20.09

Oh, My: It was mentioned in the comments last night that Fox34 has reported (and I cannot find the video on their website) that QB Taylor Potts has not been cleared to play and you can expect redshirt FR Seth Doege to get the nod on Saturday.  Before we get ourselves all worked up, there's a lot of time between now and Saturday and plenty can happen.

Here's what we do know right now, Steven Sheffield is out 2-3 weeks as he had surgery on his ankle (LAJ's Don Williams, DT's Alex Ybarra, and FWST's Dwain Price).  According to Williams article, Potts warmed up last week against Nebraska with the full team.  You'll also remember that Potts wore the blue jersey last week, but wearing the blue jersey is standard for all Texas Tech quarterbacks, so that's really not news.

I really didn't want this game to be more interesting and if there's any doubt about whether it is . . . it is.

I'd also add that if there's one thing that Leach has been able to do, consistently throughout his career, is to coach quarterbacks.  For those of you concerned about Potts or now, Doege, I'm fairly comfortable with Leach preparing a quarterback, but I'd be lying if I told you that a 3rd string quarterback who probably hasn't seen the reps that he normally would, starting his first collegiate game in front of the biggest crowd in Texas Tech history is a bit worrisome.

Sharpe and Howard Playing Big:  DT's Alex Ybarra writes that DE's Brandon Sharpe and Daniel Howard are making huge plays for the team this year.  Howard talks about what Sharpe can do coming off the edge:

"B-Sharpe, he was my roommate when I first got here," Howard said. "He comes off the edge real fast. I always tell him, you gotta come off fast. You gotta hustle. You gotta go every play and something good is gonna happen."

And Leach has quite a bit of praise for Howard:

"I feel comfortable saying this, he might have the best motor of anybody on our team," Tech coach Mike Leach said. "He just plays and plays and plays and plays. We’re routinely seeing him tackling people on the other sidelines, he’s a defensive end of all things."

I think I've been saying this since this summer.

Mutiny Dodged:  LAJ's Adam Zuvanich writes that this Texas Tech squad avoided a mess, despite numerous injuries and "situations" that would have normally sunk a season.

Texas A&M Aggie Links:  TR's dedfischer previews the Aggies . . . B/CS Eagle's Robert Cessna writes that the Aggies' response this week will be a key to their future . . . SAEN's Brent Zwerneman writes that the Aggies are looking for answers after the Kansas St. blowout and Zwerneman also had this from Leach on playing the Aggies:

"They're a lot like Nebraska in that they just have an incredible tradition and incredible program," said Leach, who's 7-2 against the Aggies. "They're (a program) people have heard about, before Bear Bryant and will for years after.

"It's an honor for us and for our team to have the opportunity to play a team that has such a storied tradition, and all of the NFL players that they have."

  Assorted Links:  Rock M Nation's Bill C. updates the Beyond The Box Score Projections and the computers still predict a 7 to 8 win season . . . SB Nation's Spencer Hall presents the Alphabetical for Week 7 . . . LAJ's Adam Zuvanich muses about the Big 12 conference . . . Rivals.com (#19) and Scout.com (#19) ranks all 120 teams . . . Phil Steele takes a look at this past weekend . . . ESPN's Mark Schlabach's On The Mark for Week 7 . . .

Neglected Video:  All after the jump, including a fairly entertaining bit on Leach during yesterday's press conference . . .

Big-Man Commits: LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that Pat Knight received his 3rd commitment for the 2010 class from Gulf Coast Community College's Paul Cooper (6-8/250).  Gulf Coast CC is the same school where current Red Raider, Brad Reese, attended before committing to Texas Tech.  Cooper appears to be a guy who wants to play in the post, and I like that:

"I like to bang; that’s my thing," Cooper said. "I like to get in there and bang some bodies around, score."

Please don't take that quote out of context.

Red & Black Series:  The baseball team will get some work in starting on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. before the football game as the baseball squad starts the annual Red & Black Series.  See the link for more details and here's a PDF of the roster this year.

Wow

Leach can pull this off……how bout Jeffers running wildcat for some plays? Get creative and hang 50 this week.

Tech verison of the Wildcat:

Batch, Stephens and Jeffers all in the backfield. Wouldn’t that be scary for the other team and awesome on the highlights. Line all 3 up in a row and the center just hike it to one of them

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

Wouldn’t that be wild if Doege started and threw 7 TD’s. 3 different qbs having 7 TD games in 1 year. That’d be awesome.

YES!!! Doege!!!

I have been intrigued with Doege ever since he signed with us originally. I don’t know how many of you realize this, but before he blew out both of his knees he was considered among the top 3 QB’s in the nation and was on his way to being a probable 5-star QB. Obviously, when he injured both knees the scholarship offers decreased greatly, but it didn’t matter because he has been wanting to play for Tech his whole life. This kid has throws an absolutely beautiful ball and has one of the most natural releases I have ever seen, not to mention he is a good athlete with good mobility. He is also eerily similar to Harrell with his mannerisms and style (hell, he even looks like Harrell, I think). I’m not trying to look like I have zero faith in Potts, but to be honest I believe that Doege couldn’t perform much worse than Potts has at times this year, so we may as well see what Doege can do for us. Very excited to see him play!

Very excited to see him play!

…assuming he gets the start, of course :)

Word on the street is that Potts was cleared last night. I guess as long as it is Tech policy not to talk about injuries, I’ll have to speculate and relay third-(and fourth- and fifth- and sixth-)hand information. If I were a gambling man, I would bet on Potts starting.

Potts...

I also believe Potts will start on Saturday. I hope he took notes during this time and if anything else he saw how to run the game @ the line better. SS obviously brings mobility but I just think he checked into better plays @ the line. Potts just needs to read and let the ball go and get it to the running backs more. I know the OL is still in progress but Potts still to me shied away from the run too much. I wonder how many teams would love to have our problems @ QB ? Just amazing what Leach can do with QB’s. Can’t wait to see Karam/Young battle it our for the starter! Wreck’Em Tech

Make the Aggies

gameplan for Doege and Potts.

Go register. Or else.

Bluffing

Clearly Leach is not above bluffing. It sounds like Potts wasn’t even cleared as of yesterday… which means he obviously wasn’t an option for the Nebraska game, but Leach rolled with it that he was going to make a game time decision.

I haven’t turned my back on Potts, but after seeing the light of a mobile QB I would like to see what Doege can do. He would be the youngest to start for Leach ever… and we all know how Leach likes experience over most other attributes.

Rest assured, if Potts is healthy he gets the nod no matter what… after hearing about the Nebraska bluff, I’m not sure Potts doesn’t go back in over a healthy Sheffield… Leach is a very stubborn guy when it comes to football decisions as we all know.

On a side note… that video is awesome… haha. I wish someone would get the clip of Carter checking down to the run play and then promptly informing Keown & Sheffield about it on you tube. That was classic.

This is updated 7:20am by Nick Zilinski at Fox34

“Texas Tech quarterback Steven Sheffield is out Saturday vs. Texas A&M, and he’s out longer than that. Sheffield was the first back-up QB to ever start a game in the Leach era. But it may not be who you expect starting Saturday.

A source close to FOX 34 confirmed Sheffield had surgery on his foot Monday morning and screws were inserted. The surgery took place in hopes of speeding up the healing process. Best case scenario is Sheffield returns agaisnt Oklahoma State.

So this would mean former starter Taylor Potts would be the starter, right? Not so much at this point. Potts had some medical tests done Monday as well and he has not been cleared to play against the Aggies as of now. This leaves Set Doege, the third stringer coming into the season as the possible starter for Saturday.

===
It does not matter with the plug and play Air Raid. ;-) All he has to do is read and throw.

It is looking as if Doege may get a chance to play early for a rs fr qb. Prepare for a week of nay saying and speculation.

I don’t know but there may be a reasonable probability that Potts could be cleared by the end of the week. I wonder if the coaching staff is as antsy about this as I currently am…if he was injured again by concussion, it would really look bad, even if he had been fully cleared and that there was agreement by everyone involved…including President of the U.S.A.

I am tempted to think that if there was ever a week in which a guy in Doege’s position would start this is a good time. TTU at home is an advantage. That the opponent is from collie station ought not be relavent…but it is. The circumstances could work to their ugly advantage…yukky thought there !!

Realistically though, the collies look to have an athletic group of people wearing their colors. If they come together, it could be more of a football game than many are expecting.

“It’s an honor for us and for our team to have the opportunity to play a team that has such a storied tradition, and all of the NFL players that they have.” Mike Leach just cannot leave it alone…..did he have that twinkle in his eye when he said that ?

I saw a piece on Bryant Gumble's HBO Real Sports about cuncussions:

They we saying a rule of thumb is at least a month, and there is significant risk of severe injury should one suffer another cuncussion before the first one has completely healed. The most important thing is for the athlete to be 100% honest with the doctor about headaches, queasy feelings, etc. I personally am willing to take my chances against Ag and Hawk with Doege if it means Taylor can have longer to heal, it’s just not worth it, as I told my wife when I learned Tebow was playing again so soon, I just can’t believe the adults around Tebow could be so irresponsible in re his long term health (JMO) and I feel the same way about our kid Taylor. I think the prudent man would sit TP for a minimum 30 days. Once again, JMO after seeing that eye opening HBO show where a kid actually died after getting 2 concussions in a couple weeks, I’m not suggesting that here or being sensationalistic, but bretheren, it is THAT serious of a condition (concussions). Of course I’m not a doctor and am probably armed with just enough information to be dangerous.

It hurts to say this but I’d rather lose (although we won’t anyways) with Doege than have Potts be seriously enjured by head Trama. I don’t think anyone will fault Leach for not playing Potts if it makes no sense medically. This isn’t the same as a shoulder injury or something. Your brain is a totally different animal.

Tebow
…I just can’t believe the adults around Tebow could be so irresponsible…

I felt exactly the same way.

We can win with Doege.....

Do I want Potts in this week if possible…YES but if not I think we saw something from Doege against KSS. Once he settled down he did just fine. Wow what a chance to be a longtime Raider and get to start your first game in the Jones against the ags!! This also means the Jones needs to be rockin with the 60,000 red/black pirates! Wreck’Em Tech

DOEDGEEEEEEE!!!

i have much more confidence on a quarterback like doedge than potts. on his 5 minutes performance against kansas he averaged more than 10 yards/ throw so that is great! he might not be as tall but he looks pretty solid. i think potts had his chance. he had 5 games to proof what he was made of and he might be a very tough quarterback but damn his accuracy sucks and cant see him throw the ball farther than 35 yards at the most. this really makes me think though… does leach really know how to choose its quarterbacks? i mean steven sheffield was lucky to play due to potts injury and took potts place in a heart beat. if sticks was that good, why hasn’t he been the starting quarterback since the beginning.

As compared to what?

Excuse me if I am offended, but what kind of two 2%er says he has no confidence in the guy Leach picked to lead this team. Since its not Leach, or the staff saying these things, I am assuming you are basing this off of personal opinion shaped by experience. How many times have you been sacked in your collegiate career?

Your confidence should be with your team and the personel decisions made by it, regardless of who starts at QB.

by raider05 on Oct 20, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let’s be clear…Tech fans don’t ever use the phrase “2%er.” That belongs squarely with the boys in College Station – and should stay there along with all the other weirdness that emmenates from that place. That said, while I MUCH prefer Sheffield to Potts, I also much prefer Potts to Doege for this particular game. .

by Tech92 on Oct 20, 2009 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I use the phrase 1 %er, but that is another world outside football.

If it comes down to us having a decent lead I would like to see Doege get some more action and take a few snaps. Give the guy a couple series and see what he is capable of doing.

Big Head

I personally am really trying to be humble about this week’s game. Yes, A&M has struggled recently but let’s not forget that this game is in no way an automatic win. The majority of commens I’ve read recently are about the blow out expected but lets not set ourselves up for a massive let down here. We currently have our starting QB and backup QB injured (yes Potts too as he hasn’t been cleared to play). While Potts may be back, right now we’re looking at a RS QB as our starter who has a total of around 8 minutes of actual play time. If we were to lose this game, some of the comments posted here would make us look like arrogant fools. I’m not saying we shouldn’t cheer on Tech and be confident, but there is a fine line between confident and having a big head. Go Tech!

I think we're all a little confused if Potts is starting or not.

Is it possible to get a definite yes or is this still a game time decision?

He has to be cleared to play by the medical staff at Tech

That may happen before Saturday, or it may not.

Review the Fox34 video above: Sheffield out, Potts not yet cleared for Saturday’s game
