The Current QB Situation

We are all aware of the current QB situation. If you're not I'll do my best to fill you in with as many details and links that I'm aware of at this time.

Sheffield is out with a foot injury. He had surgery Sunday with some iron shoved in his foot and will be out for 2-3 weeks. Linky here - http://www.redraiders.com/2009/10/19/sheffield-out-two-to-three-weeks-with-foot-injury/

Potts has been cleared by the Texas Tech Medical staff and for what it's worth will be a "game time decision" as to whether or not he will play. We've heard that story before, but I'm guessing he will be taking the keys and shoving it down A&M's throat for at least 3 quarters. I expect Potts to come out fired up and damn near on the brink of insanity saturday. I'm hoping he scares the hell outta Carter while he's at it. Talk about some intensity. Maybe this will give Doege some reps and we can see a lot more of what he is capable of. I'm honestly excited about the guy.

Linky here - http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=td-newsflash102909&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

All this brings up a few questions for me and probably some of you too. If and when Sticks is cleared by the medical staff to suit up and play, who the hell is going to navigate this pirate ship? Pun intended.

Will Potts maintain the starting role while we have Sheffield as the #2 man to go to?

Will Sheffield take the spot back and put Potts on the sidelines?

Is Leach going to let them battle it out the rest of the year? No way. That's not his style. He's probably going to stay with Potts as the leading QB. Is that the right thing to do? I don't have the slightest idea. I'm not the coach. I almost was but they said I couldn't run the A11 offense so I said NO!  While Potts showed some flashes of brilliance he didn't dazzle me quite like Sheffield did. Potts seemed to be a "go thru the motions type" more than anything else. Sheffield made the plays happen a lot more frequently than Potts did. But there is a good chance that Potts was able to view that from the sidelines and possibly incorporate that into his own game.

I think Potts is capable of leading this offense if he can show some swagger against A&M. If he comes out with guns blazing and his hair on fire, it's going to be awesome. I desperately want to see him lead this offense but not at the cost of another loss or sub-par season. We've all said it, "if he can get it together then I'll be for him 100%" Is that fair? Hell yeah it's fair. I don't want to follow a QB on the downward sprial. I'm not saying he's headed that direction but I don't want to take that ride. Leach obviously saw something in Potts that lead him to belive that Potts was capable of running this offense. What is it? Beats the hell outta me. He can throw the ball. Me too. He's tall. I'm not tall like him. Potts is tough. I'm not tough enough to go to the ground and not try and kick somebody's ass over it. That knocks me out of the competition. He has some sort of swagger or skill that we haven't seen yet or have just flat out missed. I think he needs to use them as soon as possible. I know for a fact that he has a cannon and can break your fingers at 60 yards out. Why he hasn't done that yet I don't know. Maybe the Athletic Department's insurance doesn't cover blown off fingers due to gunfire.

I'm willing to cheer him on and see what he's capable of doing. There is no doubt in my mind that Leach will have him ready to go. The real question is whether or not Potts is ready to go. If his mind is 100% in the game then we will make a HUGE statement on saturday. I know he has the ability to get fired up about playing ball. There is a video on youtube that was filmed in the locker room last season before a home game. Fehoko was performing some sort of Samoan Dance and screaming at the top of his lungs. I thought the team was about to go kill a heard of buffalo with their bare hands. It made me piss myself I was so damn scared. Those boys where fired UP! Potts is in the video and showed excitement and intensity himself.

This team is capable of pulling off one hell of a season with Potts if all his gears are lined up. Wreck Em TECH!!

On a side note - since Seth has absolutely refused to give me a drop down depth chart I'm going to make a sorry attempt at making one for the QB's we currently have on the roster. Just kidding Seth.

Good post. When it comes down to it, Potts is getting a second chance. He won’t waste it. He will be ready for the Aggies and hopefully he can gain confidence for the Jayhawks after that.

When Sheffield gets back: Leach is going to have a real conundrum and it depends a lot on how the team responds to Potts being back in the saddle. And that, I think, depends on if Potts used his time off to study tempo. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Leach open up the QB battle and let them go each week fighting for the starting role. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Leach gave each playing time during the game, not to the point of rotating by series, but perhaps rotating out to the bench player if one drive doesn’t end in points (going with the hot hand).

Really, with Leach, would anything surprise you?

by kayakyakr on Oct 21, 2009 8:43 AM CDT reply actions

Agree with all you said…and no, nothing Leach does surprises me at this point. Good or bad.

by Tech92 on Oct 21, 2009 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Nothing with Leach surprises me, but

That would be the one thing that might. I’m sure you know as well as anyone that it is simply his MO. But you really never know what coach is going to do.

I could see him letting them compete week-to-week. But I think one of them would have to be having a really, really crappy game to have “2nd team” guy come off the bench during a game. Can’t remember off the top of my head, but did Harrell get pulled in the 2006 Mizzou game? If not then, I’m not sure when you pull a QB (2 INT’s and 2 fumbles).

GH yanked at TCU

In reference to an above comment, I really don’t know how much TP could have “studied” that first week maybe even two after the concussion. I been there and you can be pretty foggy for a while, waking up at 2:00 am and wondering where the heck am I? WHO the heck am I. Some of you have mentioned the “not all there” look he had on the sidelines against KSU.

by Plano Jeff on Oct 21, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Am I the only one here that believes Sheffield has undoubtedly earned the starting job? Why does everyone seem so open to this “re-evaluation” process of the two QB’s? Sheffield is CLEARLY the better choice…it’s not even close. What else does he have to do to prove himself?

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I’m posting on the speculation that Potts manages to perform as a starter in our offense should on saturday, rather than the assumption that he’s going to fail. In short, I’m looking at the “what if” if Potts comes in this game and has a game like Sheff’s against KSU.

by kayakyakr on Oct 21, 2009 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

It’s interesting because they are wildly different QBs. They have a different skill set, different temperment and different way of looking at a game. Taylor has his pluses, no doubt. And I am confident he’s going to do great on Saturday night. But this is like choosing between a Bentley and Ferrari. They are both high quality, high maintenance, high performance. Neither is a wrong choice, it just depends on your style.

I like Potts as the Bentley. Large, regal, flashes of brilliance, but not much difference in the looks category than a 5000. Not a ton of bang for the buck. Sheff is the Ferrari. Speedy, lithe, nimble, mega exciting, but prone to high speed crashes.

by Tech92 on Oct 21, 2009 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice

From a mobility and sustainability you mean. He can take a hit like a cement truck too.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

by texastfan on Oct 21, 2009 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Very true…his toughness is rivaled by none, no doubt.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

High speed crashes?

We’ve see 2 throwing mistakes from sheffield against Big 12 caliber defenses and 3 times as many from potts against sub bar talent.

Sheff has earned this job and it’s not even close.

by allknowing on Oct 21, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Metaphor, bro. He runs a lot more, so he’s more prone to have a high speed collision. It’s not a negative.

by Tech92 on Oct 21, 2009 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

i thought you were saying he was going to come to a burning halt! My bad duder.

by allknowing on Oct 21, 2009 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

FINALLY

Someone is as adamant as I am about wanting Sheffield to start!

by techtom4 on Oct 22, 2009 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions

But he could never have a game like Sheff's against KSU

Because he isn’t Sheff!!! He doesn’t have the accuracy, mobility, leadership, and overall moxy that Sheff does. Even in the 7 TD game against Rice, Potts had many poor throws and questionable decisions, and got sacked because of poor pocket awareness. In the TWO GAMES that Sheff has started, he has broken the team record for passing yards in a half, led the team to their third highest yardage total in school history (739), and then gone on the road the next week against the #15 team in the country and beaten them by 21 points!!!! Not to mention inspiring the team in the UNM game!

The way I look at it, Potts got to play in 4 full games, and he looked mediocre to below-average in all of them and left the team and fans uncertain if he could be our QB. Now, Sheffield got to play in 2 full games, and he has looked incredible and been elected captain by teammates and become a fan favorite. I dunno, it just seems kinda obvious to me…

Also, remember how every Tech QB has needed a few games (and sometimes almost a whole season) to learn how to fully operate our system? yeah that never happened with Sheffield. He has come in and lit it up from the very beginning without the learning curve.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

“Also, remember how every Tech QB has needed a few games (and sometimes almost a whole season) to learn how to fully operate our system? yeah that never happened with Sheffield. He has come in and lit it up from the very beginning without the learning curve.”

Astute observation. He didn’t need the break in period. At all.

by Tech92 on Oct 21, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup

and these weren’t even the first two games of a particular season for him, they were the first two of his CAREER!

by techtom4 on Oct 22, 2009 1:32 AM CDT up reply actions

QB battle

I kind of suspect Potts will come out playing at a level we as tech fans havent seen in a very long time. Hell, he can move decent (or did in HS), maybe he runs one in from 20 yds out! If not, Sticks should be the guy when he comes back. If Potts shows us something great, yes gentlemen, we have a battle. I don’t know about Leach pulling a QB because of one bad drive though. If it were me, I would pull a QB after their second pick in any game, or their 3rd hard hit in the back field. Maybe even if they look confused AKA Potts against NM. Interested to see how this one pans out.

by RdrPwr on Oct 21, 2009 9:23 AM CDT reply actions

Well, the idea is to give a generic ending point that will lead to more transitions. It’s less a matter of punishment as pulling a qb after an int or taking a bad sack, more of a competitive fact of life, each QB knowing if he doesn’t score, it’ll be the other guy’s turn.

by kayakyakr on Oct 21, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

That would actually be fun to watch, if we knew what was going on.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

If you were the head coach for Tech, or your particular team,,evaluating the talent levels between Sheff and Potts, who would you chose to lead your team into battle? I say the vote would be about 70% Sheff 30% Potts

by Dr. Mark on Oct 21, 2009 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

yea

I would say Sticks is the leader the team needed to spark a fire. I think the team now has that fire and will play at the high level they have been even with Potts at the helm. I believe if Potts goes out tries and plays “well” or better he will have the team behind him. If he goes out and well fails then I think the offensive players will be asking leach for Doege.( I do not believe this will happen but I think it could)

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

by texastfan on Oct 21, 2009 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

From recent performances

I would most certainly go with Sticks. But if Potts comes out and finally shows his potential the next couple weeks, then there’s a problem.

by RdrPwr on Oct 21, 2009 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

POTTS SHOULD DO FINE AGAINST A&M, but

Riding the bench for two weeks is not going to make Potts a better QB. What we have seen from Potts,is what we are going to get the rest of the season ,or the game he starts. He is not going to be a better athlete in a 2 week period, hell ,he has had 4 yrs to do that in our system. Potts is a adequate backup for this team, and that is what " he’s grown into" while at Tech. Potts will be as good as the talent level he has playing against him. Leach should of went with Sheffield from the beginning of the year.,,but???

by Dr. Mark on Oct 22, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Not sure I agree.

I think a player can learn a lot from watching someone else at a position he was just in(of course the cross eyed vision may hurt that some). He has a chance to see what he would do(since he was just there) and what someone else did do.

It can be an learning experience and I think Leach gets QB’s that are smart and can learn. So I hope he has figure out some things on the side lines and will use those to rip the aTm team apart.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

Yea I know.

I think Sticks has played better and would be my first choice. But he has a 2nd chance to show he is better than he played and I cannot wait to see how he does.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

by texastfan on Oct 22, 2009 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I AGREE,,

I personally hope Potts puts 40+ points on them ,and Leach takes him out. WE cannot afford to get him hurt. When the game is out of reach, Leach has a bad habit of leaving the starters in too long. Forget the points, I just want the “W”.

by Dr. Mark on Oct 22, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Right.

I think Doege could go in with the 2nd string and show us what he has, if we have a nice lead, in the middle of the 3rd or start of 4th quarter.

But your right Leach does normally leave them in too long and since Potts has not been the starter lately he may not pull him out until the last drive or two.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

by texastfan on Oct 22, 2009 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Unless Potts’ synapses are completely shorted out, he knows what he has to do to get his job back. Being named as the main man back in the spring may have subconsciously made him ease off a bit. Both QBs have made mental mistakes, it’s just that Potts’ tend to end up as turnovers while SS’s tend to end up as sacks.

KW, I’ve got some Harley parts laying around. What do you need and what do I get?

I'm liking the idea that Potts will start.

The way I see it, Potts has been sitting on the side lines watching Sheffield win the games and get the glory. Now he gets his shot back and to prove that he deserves the #1 position, he’s got to tear the Aggies a new one. It might get bloody on that field. God, I wish I could see it.
I think the Aggie team morale is pretty low and they are going to come into the game fearing the inevitable.
The Stadium is going to be rocking.. I bet less there are less than 5% Aggie Fans at that game. Our reputation for being "Rowdy" has pretty much scared off all but the Diehards.

I love what Sticks brings to the game and to the team. I hope that he is on the sidelines doing the same, and I believe Potts is a smart guy and would have learned from his time on the side. I bet we will see a different Potts on the field Saturday.

+1

I’m excited to see what Potts or Doege brings on Saturday. Pretty timely given the desire whoever starts will have to show they can play. Should help prevent any potential let down after the big win at Neb.
I have a theory that it may be that Potts was pressing and trying to do too much now that he had the chance to start. I’m sure he’ll be fired up and I hope he has a GREAT game.

by imisswesttexas on Oct 21, 2009 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

That's exactly why I'm worried

I think Potts was trying to do too much to be like Harrell at the start of the season and now, seeing how the team and fans took to Sticks like Potts had never been there, Potts is going to try too hard to prove he’s the starter. He’s going to try to get a touchdown with every pass and force bad throws things in trying to show ’he’s the man’ and a big ‘screw you’ to everyone who’s dumped on him these past two week.

I really, REALLY hope I’m wrong, but I’ve got this sick feeling the Potts trying to prove himself all over is going to lead to a bunch of unnecessary interceptions and a possible loss.

by theta12 on Oct 21, 2009 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

He’s going to try to get a touchdown with every pass and force bad throws

Well, that wouldn’t be any different from the Potts we’ve already seen this season.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I'am not sure

The self inflicted ints and bad pass’s are part of the things I think he should have figured out by now not to do. Along with being a leader and stepping up and getting the guys around you excited to play.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

by texastfan on Oct 21, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

So does that mean that if you could pick based on what we have seen out of Potts and Sheffield this season, you would start Potts for the rest of the year? I just don’t see how anyone could justify that…

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope.

I would say Sticks has earned the starting job based on game day results. Simple as that. However, he’s gonna be out for 2-3 weeks. So if at the end of his rehab time you have Potts with hopefully 3 wins and playing well, it might be hard to pull him.

Time will tell. But overall I agree with your assessment that Sheffiled has earned the starting role. Pretty exciting for the program to be in a position where we have a minimum of 2 and possibly 3 quality QBs to choose from.

by imisswesttexas on Oct 22, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Ya I agree. Anyone who doesn’t want Potts to do well has something wrong with them. I just want to see Sheffield start when he is healthy again.

Also, I heard he has been walking around in a boot and that he could possible return for the KU game… it’s all based on how well he tolerates pain? could be just rumor though…

by techtom4 on Oct 22, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Potts comments

Hopefully we all understand that when those of us make comments about preferring Sticks to Potts, you understand that we aren’t saying Potts is a spare. …far from it. He is as tough as we have seen and we all will be 100% in for him and the offense. We now have a large enough sampling of both that I can live without second guessing MIke’s decision once Sticks is healthy…..but I have to say that #1 is the leader in the clubhouse.

by oldschoolraider on Oct 21, 2009 11:05 AM CDT reply actions

I, for one

will be devastated if somehow Sheffield isn’t the starter when he is healthy again. He is a better gamer, you can just see it by the way the team plays with him out there. I really believe we have seen all we need to see out of Potts, and he just plain and simply is not the right guy for us. He is a solid kid, a good athlete, but Sheffield needs to be the leader and starter for this team. Potts just made too many mistakes, tried to throw passes that weren’t there, and had no pocket prescense/mobility at ALL. Sheffield also seems to recognize when to change the play to a run much more effectively. Sheffield, IMO, is such an obvious choice and is just much, much better in every aspect of a QB.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 11:36 AM CDT reply actions

The ONLY thing I think Potts will never really have is leadership. I think some people are leaders and some people are follows. Maybe a genetic thing, who knows. But I know that if you don’t already have it in you, it doesn’t ever really happen. Look at Tony Romo. Talented kid, zero in the leadership department. I think the same about Potts. Talent upon talent, but he doesn’t get to maximize it because he doesn’t make the guys around him better. Sheff has that intangible thing that makes everyone, even the defense according to the team, play better/harder.

Like Old School said, I don’t think Potts is a spare at ALL. I think he’s good with a chance to be really good. But I happen to think Sheffield is great and on the cusp of being special.

by Tech92 on Oct 21, 2009 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

I must be alone in thinking this

But if I’m Mike Leach, once both my quarterbacks are healthy again, I don’t hesitate for one second to name Sheffield my starter again.

''ain't gonna happn'

If the rumors and reports are CORRECT, [ insertion rod and or pins ] to help the healing process, if this is the case ,your looking at minimum 5-6 weeks for Sheffield to safely return. Thats the meat of our schedule. Whether we like it or not, I think we are STUCK with Potts. In my opinion, there will not be QB contoversy because Sheff wont be able to go. I’m wishing the best for Potts, I think we will be OK in the Aggie game, but I dread Kansas, OK State, OK, .

My thoughts exactly...

While I’m no doctor, 2 to 3 weeks out for an injury that involved putting some hardware in your foot sounds awfully optimistic to me….
I hope TP is ready to step up and LEAD this team…
And I hope Doege is ready to come in if needed…
Just Wreck the heck out of aTm!

by Houston Raider on Oct 21, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, that’s not a terribly unrealistic expectation. If the foot had plates inserted for simply stabilization and a very minor fracture, you can walk the next day. The 2 wk healing time may be only for the wound itself. If the bone in question is a non-load bearing bone (there are many, many bones in the foot/ankle that don’t support a lot of weigh, believe it or not), then it’s a matter of pain tolerance and protection with padding.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

My guess Leach won’t replace Potts or Doege for that matter, if either one of them is efficent in running his offense. It just doesn’t make sense to replace a productive QB in the middle of the season. And I think Sheffield out played Potts in the spring game. We all know how he sparked the offense when he replaced Potts in the New Mexico game and how that carried over to the KSU and NU games.

I fully expect Potts just as effective as he was early in the season. He was leading the nation in pass offense. I just hope he begins to step into his throws and shows a little scrambling ability this Saturday.

Seeing as

Leach has had the team vote for captains each week, he may leave it up to the team as to who gets to start for them… one of the qb’s is gunna be captain on a consistant basis, and i doubt they’d vote sticks captain and have him ride the bench

Fact is...

no one knows what the situation will be in 3 to 4 weeks. Will Sticks be ready? How will Potts play? How will the team respond? Just like no one knew what was in store before the NM game. To suggest what needs to be done in the future at this point in time is ludicrous.

I feel that Potts will be one motivated qb against aTm. He’s playing for his future. He’s seen how effective getting the running backs touches can be, either by short passes or checking into running plays. Hopefully, it’s been drilled into him not to force the action downfield, but be deliberate. He may not run out of trouble like Sticks, but he may not take sacks for -16 yds and throw pick 6’s. He may be better with 4 starts under his belt, just as the whole team has improved lately. After all, he was the nations leading passer when he went down.

If Sticks is out 3 weeks, he won’t be ready for OSU. He would miss the 2 weeks of preparation before the game. If he misses much more than that, the season will have passed him by. There may not be a decision to make about who’s starting in a month. Why debate it now? It’s Potts’ gig.

Can't we all just get along?.....

I do believe everyone here is unified on one point and it is that we want TTech to run the table and just see where things fall from there. Maybe if we could win out we get our shot at a BCS bowl(how screwy but poetic). But not it would still be amazing to see where we are with two 10 plus wins years in a row. Recruiting is up and it could get even better which makes TTech so much better. Our coaches actually know what to do with talent as opposed to the atm. Anyway, I’m pullin for TTech Red(pirate) Raiders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wreck’Em Tech

Redemption

Taylor,

This is your chance to redeem yourself . Some people never get a second chance; make the most of it. You may not get another.

We’re pulling for you.

I'm not worthy. Really.

That’s what I think most people are thinking.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

Get ready to hear:

“Potts is sacked” “Potts goes down” :(

"Listening"

Being the operative word for me. I’m gonna be sick of Brian Jensen by 10:00 pm en la maƱana.

Me too. But I love his TD call

He’s grown on me. It took some time. Interested quick interview on DMN site from last year:

I still miss the legendary voice of Jack Dale. Listened to him from when I was about 12 yrs old til he retired. To this day, I could hear his voice in a crowded mall and know exactly who it was. He was and is the best!

I’m just ready to hear “Zoo with the 94 yard kick return to start the game!”

Lets hope no sacks.

My 3 year old son says “Red Raider First Down” anytime the announcer says Texas Tech now.

That is all i want to here Saturday.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

Will Potts improve?

Potts came into the season with a lot of hype about his size and arm strength. People were saying he was better than Harrell because of these attributes before he even won a game. This caught me by surprise since Leach has never stressed size and arm strength. I would have felt much better if Leach stressed his ability to read defenses, find the space in coverage, make quick decisions, and deliver the ball accurately on time.

He did not do those things well. He often locked in on his first read, which resulted in holding onto the ball too long or throwing into coverage. Now, he has taken the criticism and watched a walk on run the offense more efficiently. Mostly, he just didn’t take care of the ball consistently, and Sheffield was further along in this offense.

What will he do with this experience? I think mentally he will be in the right place, trying hard to learn from his mistakes. I think he will respond positively to the challenge. I think the team and the fans will be behind him. However, breaking bad habits is hard work, but I hope for the best.

Whether Leach starts Sheffield in Stillwater depends entirely on how Potts performs these two games and how Sheffield looks in practice. It won’t be determined by some philosophy on sticking with the current starter just because. Whoever demonstrates he is the better man gets the job, and that is yet to be determined. We don’t know if Potts has learned from his struggles and we don’t know how Sheffield will look after missing two games and two weeks of practice.

Sheff looked pretty good...

After missing 3 years of gametime:) However, missing practice might hurt him (as much as running on that bum wheel would).

I don't guess anyone googled A11 offense, did they?

Just did

and wow…. I would hate to go against that. Seems like it would confuse the hell out of a defense. My favorie part -"The scrimmage kick formation is allowed on 4th downs under NCAA rules and on conversion attempts, and a few situations which define a scrimmage kick formation with an additional requirement that “it is obvious that a kick may be attempted.” It is otherwise not allowed for most normal plays, making the A-11 impossible to use on an every-down basis" -wikipedia. Should I email this to ol’ Mike? Last time I emailed him some plays we used it on the opener against NM and it was 88 yards to Leong…. not saying that im good or anything, but it frickin worked dammit lol.
