Five Reasons Texas Tech Will Lose :: Texas A&M Aggies Edition

This weekly feature considers five reasons why Texas Tech will win and five reasons Texas Tech will lose to each opponent. Check back tomorrow for "Five Reasons Texas Tech Will Win :: Texas A&M Aggies Edition".

Reason #1 :: Miller to Meet New Left Tackle: It just so happens that Russell McDaniel, Terry's father was my freshman history teacher (way back in high school). I emailed Russell on Monday, just to let him that that I were thinking about him, that I didn't need to know about his injury, but rather that he have a speedy recovery. Looking at DE Von Miller's outstanding statistics for the year, I thought back about that email and couldn't help but think that I'd love to see McDaniel take on Miller this week after taking on the talented Nebraska defensive ends (I know it wouldn't be an exclusive matchup, but cut me some slack). It's almost a given that Chris Olson will be the replacement at left tackle and he's done an admirable job, but he'll have his hands full with Miller all game, and he'll also have to be concerned about Miller getting to Potts for any sort of hit. Sometimes, playing a little bit nervous can be a detriment, but Olson had better be lights out on Saturday.

Star-divide

Reason #2 :: Downfield Players: The Aggies do have players who can get vertical, starting with freshman WR Uzoma Nwachuksu, who is averaging 21 yards a catch. I should also mention that WR Ryan Tannehill is averaging a little over 15 yards a play. Texas Tech has done a good job of stopping opposing defenses, and thus far, the safeties have done their jobs and kept most things in front of them. I feel like a bit of a broken record in saying that RB Christine Michael has the potential to be a game-breaker, and thus far, he hasn't had the opportunity to get it done, but it only takes one time. And it goes without saying in that QB Jerrod Johnson can get the ball down the field, just as long has he has time. Johnson is averaging 7.4 YPA thus far, which is pretty good considering the sometimes short-yardage nature of the TAMU offense.

Reason #3 :: Desparate and Highly Motivated: I try not to rely on emotionally driven reasons, but it's too obvious to ignore. Desparate may be a bit much, but I do think that the Aggies want a good showing, preferably a win. I can't say that I understand the Aggie fanbase, but I think it applies to any team that gets their tails handed to them one week. The Aggies will come out to play on Saturday. Not because it's Texas Tech or any other school, but because I think that most players, who play at a collegiate level, have pride. I believe that about any team. It's easy to make light of the situation for the Aggies, but the truth of the matter is that when there are turnovers or sloppy play or penalties then bad things can happen. I'm hoping like hell that the Red Raiders consider. It really comes down to pride more than anything else, and pride can be a scary proposition.

Reason #4 :: How Ready is Potts: Isn't this the $64,000 question? Obviously, there's questions about whether or not QB Taylor Potts, who is coming off a supposed concussion, to now be in charge of the offense that he's had a break from for the past 2 and a half games. I haven't understood the personal attacks against Potts, and I can appreciate the differences of opinion, but the truth is that Potts struggled to get rid of the ball at times, which eventually led to his concussion against New Mexico, and his decision making wasn't as good as Sheffield's. Potts must from his mistakes prior to his concussion and although the concussion is a painful memory, it should serve as one. Throw the damned ball away. An incompletion is nothing to this team, but a loss for 7 to 15 yards can be tough to make up for any team. If Potts hasn't acquired that internal clock then I think that Miller could have a field day. I think we're all curious about what Potts will be like on Saturday and if he hasn't changed, it could be a long game.

Reason #5 :: Just Out Score the Red Raiders: This is probably a reach, but I do think that Aggies best attribute is their ability to score. I go back to that Oklahoma St. game just 2 weeks ago and the Aggies matched the Cowboys touchdown for touchdown for most of the game. We'll probably talk about this for the rest of the week and I've mentioned it here plenty of times, but the Aggies do have talent at the skill positions and this might be an absolutely failure of a game-plan, but the Aggies might be best suited to get into a track meet, especially with the Red Raiders getting a quarterback who hasn't played in 2 weeks and a new left tackle, maybe let the game rest squarely of the offense's shoulders.

What's up?

We just got rid of playing the boy named Suh, and now we get the boy named Christine. Did I miss something?

I caught a few minutes of the K.St.-atm rerun on TV last night – the part where Johnson tossed the 88-yard TD pass that seemed effortless on both ends. Those guys could sure enough be a problem if they get time. But I guess the same thing could be said about us.

Von Miller scares me in the sense of Potts getting re-injured.

Potts could be reason #6

We WOULD have lost to NU last week if Potts played. NU would have sacked Potts five or six times and had more pressure the whole game. SS give Tech a chance every play to move the pocket and have the LB respect the mobility.
With Potts they can pin their ears back and come hard (same with DL). The next two games are going to be very close because of the lack of mobility with Potts and the oline injuries. Maybe Potts got a wake up call and will become a leader and lead this team in two winable home games.

by GPD on Oct 21, 2009 1:28 PM CDT reply actions

Reason #6

I really think Doege should get the start. He looked pretty good in mop-up time against K-State and showed good mobility as well. I can’t imagine that he could do much worse than Potts, anyway, so why not see how he performs in a game? Even if he has a relatively poor performance against A&M, we should still be able to win easily. Maybe if Potts looks bad once again against A&M Leach will put Doege in the game. The we can get to have a THREE person QB controversy!!!!!!!!!!

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

If he plays poorly enough for Leach to pull him and put in Doege it will still be a 2 QB controversy :)

So tell me about this alternate universe that you guys live in, that allows you come up with these fantastic predictions. Do the chicks have three boobs? Is Mike Leach buff with a pleasant smile and a bumbling buffoon who know nothing about QBs? Is Ruff a petite Irish woman? Did Doege get to play his JR. & SR. years in high school leading his team deep into the playoffs? Tune in next week for the answers to these and other mystery predictions on TT nation.

Well...

my perception is based solely on reality, so I wouldn’t be saying such things without some type of evidence and/or reasoning behind it. What is so fantastic about my predictions? Like I said, Doege looked good against K-State, and as a result I believe he could perform at least OK against A&M (who got destroyed by K-state). Also, do you not agree that even if Potts/Doege plays relatively poorly that we should still be able to beat A&M with some degree of ease???

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Well bmaxw (alternate universe)

we call them like we see them. If you know football you can see the how difference the Tech team plays with a moblie QB. SS mobility opened alot of plays that would not have happened. Even you can see that.
My statement about the loss was not fair to Potts or Tech’s great D. I admit not a fair statement by me.

Go Tech

Different Leadership styles....

Sticks and Potts lead in different ways.
Sticks is more willing to break with our system (leave the pocket) which helps when the O-line fails to execute it’s part of the system.
Tech O Lines are suppose to execute their jobs, Tech QBs are suppose to read the defense, adjust if necessary and then execute the play (which means he stays in the pocket letting the receivers execute). Potts is playing the way he has been coached to play.
In reality Potts had one bad quarter.
The OL is still the biggest QB problem we have.
Doege looked slow to read against a demoralized KState, which is not his fault due to his lack of playing time.
Underestimating TAM? Ask Philadelphia about underestimating Oakland.
I am still interested in those three boobed chicks.

by bmaxw on Oct 22, 2009 2:43 AM CDT up reply actions

No

that was because we actually faced a competent defense. The O-line can’t be perfect all the time, and we may as well adapt to that instead of trying to stubbornly assume they will all of a sudden become dominant. This is not the 2008 O-line, and as such, they cannot be judged in the same manner.

by techtom4 on Oct 22, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

No that was sticks fault for holding the ball for 8 sec.

by ST04 on Oct 23, 2009 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

It's about motivation folks...

Aggies may be a talented bunch but they lack a focus which allows all the players on the field to play as a unit. Doesn’t mean they can’t do exactly that. In fact the Raider defense must cause a disruption, create a big play get a turnover on the first Atm offensive drive. It’s key not to allow the game to get into a shootout. They want like nothing else on the planet to end the losing streak. We must have defensive effort which precludes any Aggie momentum. Key players are B. Duncan, F. Mitchell and D. Howard. No second and 3 for the Aggies offense. Defense must pressure J. Johnson and give him some happy feet.KSU did a very commendable job of this can’t see why the Raiders can’t keep this trend going.
Special teams start a riot men. Just knock the ever living cr@p out of somebody on kick coverage.
Offense name of the game is keeping T. Potts upright and unharmed. I watched the replay of the KSU vs ATM game. Looked like the A&M def ends routinely lost contain against the KSU running backs..They got gashed for 5 11 yard s alot. I keep waiting for the Tech running game to breakout. I really don’t want to wait any longer. Do you? It wouldn’t hurt the Raider offense to stay on the field for 5 9 minutes at stretch 2 or 3 times especially in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to methodically shorten the game and score. I.e. does anyone think aTm is going to want to get into a track meet? Yes it’s nice to talk about. For them. But it has not been demonstrated maybe the Osu game. I am just suspicious though..that OSU defense is it on par with what the Raiders are putting on the field? I don’t see the cowboys d line equaling our folks. Raiders can get up by 3 scores and go to a balanced attack. 200 yard for the Tech running backs.
Take the short pass Taylor please, if its open just release it. We had 5 sacks inflicted on us in the last game. We have 2 x O line men knicked up. Your replacement got yelled at for missing the fat guy in the stand on the 40 yard line in seat 12. Please read, check down and throw to open RB. I like S. Doege but I don’t want to see him play until its mop up time in the 4th period. Clear enough?
Sideline just need to keep it up, motivate, motivate and keep on motivating. Yeah a few of the linebackers can dance. A little.

Video

Went back and looked at TP’s recruiting videos on rivals. There were a few clips in there of him scrambling a little bit and making something out of it. Hopefully he realizes that Leach isn’t going to pull him from the game if the pocket collapses and he moves around in the backfield.

Miller does concern me, I think I might could get pressure a few times throughout a game on our O line… they need to take that next step this week.

Aggies will be hunting a win at all costs this weekend. The fact that this game is touted as a guaranteed win for TTU doesn’t help any either. We all know the aggies are capable of playing out of their shoes every once in a while… just ask UT about the last several years. As poorly coached as this crew is, you do have to admit they have the raw talent advantage over our players… according to the recruiting powers that be anyway.

Like Seth,

I too can’t understand all the stuff people are saying bout the ‘Stache. All these definitive statements that are based on NOTHING, like “he cant scramble” or no way of knowing like "he’s not a leader". Astounding! and the ones he does deserve and they are out there, are blown out of proportion and CORRECTABLE. (he throws off his back foot.) I remember a guy from Ennis Tx that probably didnt get drafted by the NFL because of that very same reason.

Ive done a lot of thinking about Sticks and Im on record as loving this guy. But Potts is CRUCIAL to the development and evolution of our program. All of Potts’ problems are correctable and we have to believe that although the game plan would have been different vs KSU and Neb with Potts in he wouldnt have had similar success.

Just look at how conservative the game plan got in the 2nd half with Sticks in the NEb game. THAT would have been different if The ’Stache was in. With Sticks its either feast or famine….if he gets plenty of time in the pocket he uses the time, not to go through his reads, but for the play to break down and his receivers to break off their patterns and work back to him. A luxury we had vs NMex and KState and not at all vs Kansas.

Yes, lets hope all this has been alesson well learned for Mr Potts. Lets just now all hit the reset button and get behind him like we were at the beginning of the season.

All these definitive statements that are based on NOTHING, like "he cant scramble" or no way of knowing like “he’s not a leader”. Astounding! and the ones he does deserve and they are out there, are blown out of proportion and CORRECTABLE

Actually, these statements (at least by me) are based on watching him play every saturday AT the Jones. He most definetely CANNOT scramble. In the UNM game, he was getting plastered almost every play. Then in comes Sheff, who on his first career pass makes a beautiul throw while running to his left to ignite our team before the half…something Potts could most likely never do. As far as being a leader, I can’t say for SURE that he doesn’t have good leadership, but when I watch Sheffield play, every receiver he completes a pass to is getting helped up off the ground and patted on the helmet or slapped on the butt by him. I have never seen Potts do this, in fact he hardly seems like he even gets fired up through the course of a game. And Finally, if all of these things are “correctable,” then why haven’t they been fixed yet!!!??? He had the same “correctable” mistakes in every game he played. Habits are hard to break, and throwing off his foot is one of them.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't hate Potts or anything

And I’m 100% behind him for THIS game, but when Sheffield is healthy again, he needs to be the starter. He brings more to the table and makes us much, much better.

Its exactly THESE types of nebulous statements that baffle me. Slapping on butt = leadership? How about gettting nailed in the kisser by Sergio Kindle and getting up and outplaying the heisman contender McCoy in that game? These boards were LIT UP with talk of the respect he earned from his team mates after that. Different leaders lead in different ways. No one can say that Potts’ “style” of leadership is less valid than Sticks’.

slapping on butt/running down the field blocking for RB’s and WR’s = passion = rubs off on teammates = fires up everyone else = makes everyone else on the team more motivated = makes the entire team better.

by Tortilla Pirate on Oct 21, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually think it is

…at least with regard to the players that contribute for Tech right now. There are no doubt guys that utilize the “lead by example” style and it works very well for them. But due to things that are really out of Potts’ control (such as the personalites of his teammates), the team seems to cling and gravitate more toward the style of leadership that Sheff exudes. This doesn’t necessarily make Sheffield a BETTER leader, because it depends on the situation. But for our current team, yes, Sheff is the better leader.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I think youre forcing your point. But we will have to agree to disagree on who’s style fits better. I, personally, have never said that Potts’ style is more valid or better than Sheffield’s because I have no way of knowing that for sure. And despite your visual evidence, I dont think you do either.

That it took the QB getting “concussed” for the team to snap out of its collective funk when they rallied around Sticks is a shame. But they did. And to knee-jerk attribute to it to Sticks being a ’better leader" is mistaken.

but he's not leading by example

that implies he isn’t turning the ball over. The lead by example debate goes for the perfectionist who makes few mistakes and makes the other players know they have to step up their game because of the peer pressure associated with people thinking they are not working as hard as the QB.

"Different leaders lead in different ways."

OK, then why all of the sudden are the linemen and defensive players excited about SS. What leadership? Leading by example? Hardly been done by TP. SS actually ran 50 yards down the field after an EB?? drop and gave him some encouragement. If you’re playing football for a living on Sundays, then I guess the lead by example route can be effective, but this is college and emotion is HUGE. He is very tough I believe, but when other people miss an assignment or something unforseen happens, SS takes it upon himself to get his ass out of the pocket and MAKE something happen. That’s leadership. The QB is for good and for bad THE leader on a team and he’s in there every play, calling the plays, and like it or not those other 10 guys on the field look to him for assurance after a bad play, the William Wallace who’s gonna say, “That set us back, but don’t worry fellas, we’re gonna march down this field and score on these bastards!” I’m willing to dive head first into a LB for this 1st down(please don’t do that QB)

But Sheffield, Doege, and Karam

are all very mobile QB’s. I’m not going to try to pretend I know what’s happening in Mike Leach’s brain, but seeing our most recent recruits makes me think that he is trying to go for a mobile quarterback. Give the air raid one more thing for a defense to worry about. The prototypical QB is changing into a mobile one, check out the NFL even.

by RdrPwr on Oct 21, 2009 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

The thing is though, is that we (obviously) don’t need a “prototypical” QB for our offense. This has been proven time and time again, and the offense is actually designed on the premise of not needing an incredible QB to run it. It’s all about simplicity, execution, and repetition…not unbelievable down the field “rare” type throws. It’s kind of funny that we are all so enamored with finally having this “ideal” type of QB when our system doesn’t require one, at ALL. All QB’s need in our system is time to throw…the plays are designed so that you really cannot stop any of them unless the QB is hurried or sacked, thus making the need for deep routes that only “prototype” QBs can throw unnecessary.

by techtom4 on Oct 21, 2009 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I was actually going to make a fan post about this point specifically. I can’t say it any better than that, but I’ll still post it later on.

Leach chose him to be the starter with high praise in August and he is the one getting to big bucks (with our support) to make the decisions. I think Potts has a all the intangibles to be a great QB and we need to stand behind our team. WRECK ’EM.

Correct about Potts

Your Right, we have to support Potts. I know Tech fans will. We need Potts to come out and show great enthusiasm in the first quarter. I think what has happened with Potts is it looked like he does not have the same FIRE that other Tech QB’s have shown. Tech has always had the disrespect card and played with a chip on their should.
Potts has great talent and with last years OL he would have been unstoppable. But this is not the case short drop back passes and dgo eep a few times. SS did it and it opens up the short pass.
All I want Potts to do is get some fire behind him and play with emotion.

I am with you on this one for sure !!

Potts is important to TTU. He has potential to be the best qb we have seen in the Air Raid era. Surely everyone wants to see him reach that.

Additionally, there is not one player, walk-on to multistar-award-winning-stat-racking hero, that I will not honor and support for what he brings, every player brings something…and every player lacks something.

GDP+WTF

in an earlier post you said that if Potts played Nebraska he would have taken 5 or 6 sacks. That is exactly the number SS took. YOU need to take your emotion and study the films. Potts is a national leader (still) and will light up the toy soldiers. Who knows, maybe, just maybe even a guy with a concusion can beat a solider.

5 or 6 more then SS took, sorry for the mistake

Because you differ

On many of our thoughts of preferring sticks to stache…..doesn’t make us emotional (and I won’t accuse you of that as well).
We disagree..nuf said.

hmmmm
I emailed Russell on Monday, just to let him that that I were thinking about him,

Good thing he wasn’t your English teacher in high school ;-)

As for reason #5, I’ve been calling for a track meet mentality all year, but I don’t think we’ll see it. I think Sherman and Cromwell have too much of the NFL mindset to believe in just giving up on the defense, and just trying to score as much as possible. They won’t play four down football, they’ll play three downs and punt. It’s frustrating to watch.

Ha!

I have no excuse other than I just wasn’t thinking.

I’m surprised that you agree with the track meet theory, I thought that was a reach when I typed it up the other night, but considering TAMU’s offensive skill position talent, it’s something that they could do.

Go Raiders . . .

Just run the ball...

and you win this game. Running game will score with ease and our defense will play like did against NU. Keep it simple and do what should be done.

TTech is in the ags heads.....

The best part of all of this is that the atm really have no idea how to handle us. It’s a nite game @ the Jones, and last time that happened, 56 came as well. Potts will be fine and to honest I don’t really care who the QB is just that we win the next 6 games and see where the chips fall. Our D is really stepping up and I hope we have Ford back next week but if not we need him by the osu(copycats). College football is alot about emotion and match-ups and both are in TTech’s favor. Wreck’Em Tech

Rivalry vs Respect

As others have said, I’m worried the ags might be desperate for some respect and they might actually be thinking this is now indeed a rivalry (which they have spent the last decade in self-denial about). I think we will be fine with TP at QB as long as the team’s collective head is in the game. Otherwise we can get out hustled and beat as happens to some team almost every weekend.

Go Tech! Wreck ’Em!

Raidier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<img src="http://"/>

I’m gonna go ahead and give a pre-emptive strike out to reason #1 why we win this game. The Raider Crater just got a little bit bigger!

(and i got the pic from ttureds blog)

by logan5555 on Oct 21, 2009 10:35 PM CDT reply actions

and in case you don’t know raidier is actually the original spelling of the word raitus from the latin raiditius meaning “to beat Aggies”.

Ok, actually I just misspelled Raider. It will still sound the same when I yell it this weekend I assume so everything is all good.

Sure is gonna be pretty

when it’s finally finished. More press boxes, closing in above the ticket office….. nice.

Wait

The seats are eventually gonna close in all the way to the ticket office???

I could have sworn that I saw it somewhere

but now I cant find anything but this.

The arches are a nice touch I guess though.

and Leach just said that he doesnt like tech fans doing the wave. He called it lame.

Any TV yet?

Off based question but do games not on TV have replay??

by GPD on Oct 22, 2009 1:28 AM CDT reply actions

General thoughts

1) stadium expansion looks great

2) A&M – has good athletes that can win. Tech just needs to make sure it’s not this week.

3) Potts would be more appealing to the fan base if the Houton game had a “W” beside it. I seem to remember everyone was a lot higher on the kid after the UT game.

by ttu_porters on Oct 22, 2009 5:53 AM CDT reply actions

The way for TP to get back into the hearts of the fans?

2 or 3 successful quarter back sneaks. But honestly, I don’t ever want to see him try another one of these again unless we’re up by 56 with two minutes to play in the fourth quarter… and I still think I’ll have my reservations about it.

by theta12 on Oct 22, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I think I am with you there on the QB sneak.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.
