Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 10.24.09

Much at Stake: LAJ's Don Williams writes that the Red Raiders have too much at stake and must take TAMU seriously. DB coach Simmons doesn't think the Texas Tech program takes other teams for granted:
"We’re not a program that carries that mentality,’’ Simmons said this week, "and to be quite honest, we’re not a program at that level yet. We haven’t done anything to where we can take anybody for granted. We’re a group that has to work hard every day.’’
Sharpe Making Folks Take Notice: FWST's Dwain Price features DE Brandon Sharpe, who is getting noticed on the field and DC McNeill had this to say about Sharpe:
"He’s been having very good practices, and once a player learns to carry over practice to the game, that’s when you see the dividends and the payoffs," McNeill said. "He’s been practicing very well, especially the last two weeks. We’re just hoping that he can carry his practice habits into the game."
Snip"Brandon is one of those guys that just kept plugging away and doing the little things, and now it’s starting to pay off for him," McNeill said. "He’s got great quickness and he’s a pretty strong player. He’s got his degree and he’s working on his teacher’s certificate now. So he’s a guy that does the right things off the field in the classroom as well as on the field."
Record Crowd: SAEN's Brent Zwerneman previews tonight's game, but here's TAMU safety Jordan Pugh on the scene in Lubbock:
"Batteries, tortillas, anything you can name, I was hit by 'em," Pugh said, grinning.
Right. In all my years of going to Texas Tech football games, I've never seen a battery thrown. Maybe I'm just not hanging out in the right places.
Texas Tech Red Raider Links: LAJ's Don Williams writes that Mike Leach could tie Spike Dykes 82 win record with a win today (this is a good read and deserves your attention, I'm just in a hurry this morning) . . . RaiderAde with a look at tonight's game . . . Bring On The Cats with a roundup of this week's roundtable . . .
Texas A&M Aggie Links: B/CS Eagle's Robert Cessna has a bunch of articles this morning: the Aggies look for some luck tonight; QB/WR Ryan Tannehill a QB first and WR second (I think he should just be on the field, too talented); who has the edge in today's game; keys to the game; the Texas Tech defense is setting the tone for the Red Raiders; and his weekly picks . . .LAJ's Adam Zuvanich writes about the pass rushing threat that is Von Miller . . .
Big 12 Links: FWST previews week 8 games . . .

The Don Williams piece about Coach Leach is very well written, IMHO, and well worth the time to read and maybe reread. There is a lot of good thoughts and perspectives about Mike Leach’s thinking from a head coaches / program leader’s perspective. It is a gread lead in to the piece about Brandon Sharpe.
Brandon Sharpe (and Rajon Henley) has done an outstanding job helping everyone to forget about a couple of players who did not make it onto the field this fall. As we stand today, I cannot think of one reason why I would want either of them on the roster considering what they were not able to do outside of the game. Sharpe has a degree and is prepared to step out and take a job as a teacher….but he is clearly hanging around to use his eligibility to see if he can work into an opportunity in the pros…I think that would be awesome for him. (Henley as well)
I think there was a lot of tongue in cheek in the quotes that Price chose to hightlight, both from Pugh and from Coach Leach. I kind of like it that some of the people involved can laugh at the perceptions and on-going legends.
Yeah, Seth, me also, I have never seen any batteries thrown…but I, too, am one of those guys who closes his eyes when he exerts himself…
Of all the players on the maroon active roster Tanehill is one that I think could have excelled as a reciever in the Air Raid. He plays football.

of course you don't see batteries thrown
they’re 9-volts wrapped in tortillas!
I’m pretty sure the only thing we’ve throw at Aggies is tortillas and goalposts

Batteries at Jones?
I think Pugh has got it mixed up, may be that’s what other Aggie fans threw at their team, that’s what classy aggies do when their own team loses—like throw punches and things at each other.

Batteries
When I arrived at Tech in 2001 it was widely rumored about the battery tossing. Apparently it was all the rage about 3-4 years before I got there… From what I heard it was a variety of AA-D cell batteries any of which would apparently ding a helmet or get tripped over or slipped on by the other players (due to our concrete like astro-turf at the time). I dunno how much faith you can put into these stories, but many of my friends who had been at school for a while had told me these tales, considering our program wasn’t quite up to par at the supposed battery tossing, and knowing the Tech fan base’s love for getting completely smashed before games… it is a possibility.
In my day though the only thing I can speak for as fact is tortillas with “customized messages” on them thrown from the first couple of rows in the student section… plus from that level you could actually peg the punt/kick returners with them… which was always fun… and yes, wad them up and toss them.

Nebraska is that bad
Today Nebraska is making our defense look a little more average. Iowa State is holding them to 9-7 with 7 mintues left in the game. I mean Nebraksa offense is really that bad!!

Mike Leach quote from Brent Zwerneman article
Leach – "And, as always, I can’t guarantee the safety of anybody that’s not a Red Raider fan in Jones AT&T Stadium."

Speaking of other games going on
can we get an afternoon open thread for those of us stuck at home and not tailgating or otherwise having fun? =\
