Post Game Thoughts :: Texas A&M Aggies Edition
TTU Box Score :: Post Game Quotes
The Result :: Ugly: I'll get into this quite a bit more later, but it was really an ugly game from a Texas Tech perspective. That's not to take anything away from the Aggies. They whipped the Red Raiders on Saturday night, so rather than re-hash that each and every time, just know, I'm giving credit where credit is due at the beginning.
The Storylines ::
Losing Stinks: I'll never forget this game. I was meeting my law school friends in Tulsa for the weekend, playing a bit of golf (I hate golf and consider this to just be an excuse to have a few beers), drinking a bit of beer and watching the game. I left the Friday night before the game and received a phone call at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday morning from my Mom who said that my grandfather had passed away about a half an hour earlier that morning. The service wasn't going to be until Monday and I had already driven to Tulsa, so I decided to spend the day hanging out with my friends, try to enjoy my time with them and then leave after the TT vs. TAMU game to go home and then make the drive to the service. The outcome of the game couldn't have been any better, it was pure magic, and the feeling of a win was absolutely incredibly, but as I climbed into my truck for the 5 hour drive back home, that feeling was as fleeting as this loss perhaps should be. I'm not trying to diminish everyone's passion about their team. Hell, if that passion wasn't here DTN would be as successful as I think it is. I'm just talking about me personally, in that as great as that 2006 win was, it was just that: a win on a football field that I have nothing to do with other than an emotional investment for my team. The 5 hour drive back wasn't about that win, it was about other things, namely my grandfather, and sometimes, whether or not you believe in coincidence or a higher calling or what have you, but sometimes things happen in life that lead us to take a step back a bit and realize that as great as a game as this is (and it is), its still just a game.
More storylines and MVP's after the jump.
It Was The Defense: There's plenty of blame to go around, but the defense was just awful. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out, 456 yards later, it was truly the defense. And the strange thing about all of this is that the Aggies didn't do anything truly exotic, I'm pretty sure that they ran what they always ran, but the key for the Texas Tech defense was that they just played soft. From the corners, to the linebackers, to the defensive line, they just played soft all game long. I'd love to tell you that it was just one phase over another, but there were too many times, all game long, where the Aggie receiver could have walked 10 yards down the field, and caught the pass without much interference. An incredibly young offensive line should not have dominated this defensive line. The linebackers couldn't put a hit on a running back to save their lives. We've talked about how a win can be a team effort, and I think this loss is the same way. There wasn't one phase of the defense that I thought came out ready to play.
DTN will have plenty of people who will throw their arms up and declare that this whole Ruffin McNeill experiment has failed. That Texas Tech needs someone new and fresh and McNeill is not the guy for the Red Raiders. It's strange how just last week, and the week before last, many thought that McNeill had turned this around a bit, myself included. For those of you completely upset, McNeill didn't miss the tackles, or was unable to get pressure on Johnson, or close gaps to tackle a running back. A fairly simple 4 man front has worked really well most of the year and there's no reason to think that it wouldn't work on Saturday as well. That's not to say that McNeill doesn't deserve any blame, he does. There should have been adjustments, and trying something new, but some blame needs to be on the players as well for not executing.
Before everyone goes bonkers, I'd just like to remind everyone that the 2009 recruiting class was McNeill's first from start to finish. And according to the rankings, it was one of the best defensive classes ever at Texas Tech, and the 2010 class is shaping up to be even better than that. If I had to guess, no one wants to change the make-up of this defense more than McNeill, but he was handcuffed with a defensive coordinator who did things his way (Setencich). Just take a look at the type and caliber of player he's recruited and are already playing (Will Ford and D.J. Johnson). It's tough being patient, and we've all had to be patient for a long time, so I feel your pain, but no one has recruited like McNeill is currently recruiting defensive players to come to Texas Tech.
Being Prepared: When HC Mike Leach made comments after the game about his staff, I don't think this was any sort of lip-service, I think he meant what he said.
You know, in the -- like I said, it starts with the coaching staff. But in the back of our minds as coaches, and in the back of on our minds as players, well, ha-ha-ha, he-he-he, we pounded Kansas State. Kansas State pounded A&M. So therefore, we're really going to pound Texas A&M.Snip
But seeing what happened here at Kansas State, well, we only have to work this hard versus A&M. Well, what a bunch of baloney that is. If we're out there having practices and doing all those things and working to develop our skills, as coaches we've got to reach the players. As players, they've got to have great effort. It was a total team loss. We need to have a great week of practice and go out and have a great game next week.
Leach goes on to say that he is proud of his staff and his players:
As disappointing as today's game was, I'm proud of our coaching staff, proud of our players. And we have some work to do. And we obviously fell in some potholes that other people ahead of us fell into. And it's disappointing that we weren't able to you know, rise above the examples. But we weren't today. So we need to figure out as coaches and players how we can do better next time.
But when Leach is pointing fingers, I think the first place he points is his staff and I think that includes himself. The defense didn't look ready to play and the offense looked contrived. Leach also mentioned after the game that the mistakes were about technique and attention to detail with the small things and consistency from week to week. I think this is what makes college athletics so unique is that it can be a very different team from week to week.
No Quarterback Controversy: I think this may be one of my flaws as a fan, in that I get attached to players, despite not knowing them from Adam. I want to see them succeed, and I feel that way about Taylor Potts. It's obvious that he's not in the game. It's terribly obvious, but at the very same moment that I can see that Potts isn't the player that I hoped he would become. I'm sad for him, and I cannot imagine how he feels about the entire situation.
There's no way that he wants to play poorly, or that any of this is intentional. I have no doubt that he's giving it his all, but at the end of the day, it's not enough and that thought depresses me a bit. I keep thinking that Potts has to go to class on Monday, that he's given up the past 3 years of his life so that he could be a part of this team and wait in line behind Harrell and have his shot. And now that shot is clearly not a viable option, unless there are further injuries, just doesn't seem right.
I empathize for Potts.
Doege is Okay: QB Seth Doege was okay in his limited action and Leach was fairly honest in his assessment:
So we've got to mix the quarterbacks and find the best one and put the best one in there. But I thought that Doege, given the situation, did some good things. And I think somewhere between confidence and routine plays and not trying to make too much happen, and you know I think that's where Potts needs to settle down.
There was nothing threatening about going down the field, a part of that goes to the Aggies who dropped just about everyone except for the front 4. At the point that Doege entered into the game, I thought that the prospects of a monumental comeback seemed incredibly remote. I hate to be a non-believer, but the odds were against the Red Raiders and that's a ton of pressure for a redshirt freshman to take on his shoulders. Doege will have to be better at getting the ball down the field, otherwise Kansas is going to play Texas Tech in the exact same manner. If there's no threat of going deep, and there wasn't really all game long, then there's no reason to worry about the underneath stuff. Yards don't always equal points and Doege must look down field, which he did later during the game, especially over the middle.
Offensive Play Calling: In the first half, it seemed to me, and I'm not connected in any way shape or form, but that Leach was the one calling the incredibly short passes early and most of the game while Potts was in the game. Maybe I'm completely wrong about all of this, but it just seemed incredibly intentional and forced for a good part of the game. I know that the quarterbacks usually have the latitude to make adjustments, but it just seemed that the decisions that Potts was making were incredibly quick and intentional. If that's the case then I can see two scenarios, which is that Leach wanted Potts to feel comfortable, so he scripted plays to get Potts into the groove, which never panned out. The second part would be that if it wasn't working, then why did it seemingly continue for the rest of the half. And we haven't even touched on the rushing game, which was non-existent in the 2nd half. Batch seemed to be carving away yards in the 1st half, but in the 2nd half, it seemed as if Leach gave up way too early in the running game.
The Offensive MVP :: WR Alexander Torres: Torres made the Texas Tech offensive play of the game, the key here being that this was too easy of a choice as the plays were few and far between.
The Defensive MVP :: S Cody Davis: Davis probably had the biggest hit of the game, which may have been the highlight of the game. This probably speaks volumes about the overall play of the defense.
The Special Teams MVP :: K Donnie Carona: Carona did a much better job of kicking the ball today, especially into the endzone. Is it sad that this is the MVP? Yep, but Carona did kick a heck of lot better.

The Tech site has a full replay of the game 3hours and 35 mins.
I also feel bad for Potts. But this is competitive sports.
He will be ok. If he doesn’t have a career in football for some reason his major, Pre – Physical Therapy, will carry him very far.
I thought Doege did one hell of a job executing and keeping the tempo going. (2) 2 Point Conversions is pretty damn nice.
Here’s to beating the heck out of KU saturday.
Wreck Em TECH!!

The only reason I feel for the kid is that he has to face his classmates. And I know not all of them will be kind or gracious. That will be tough.
But the fact that he failed in his bid to become a good QB for Tech will probably serve him well with life later on. Failure is a great motivator. I was never sold on him as a QB from the get go, but it’s nothing personal. He just didn’t look the part to me…body language, the way he moved, etc.
I'm with you 92...
I never saw anything in this kid other than size. Strong arm means nothing without accuracy. I think he’s probably a great human being and for that I respect him tremendously. My take on this is where were our decisions coming from when this guy went through spring camp? Nothing he has displayed leads me to believe he has the skills of Harrell, Cumbie, Symmons or Kingsbury. We had solid QB’s with leadership presence and this season makes me think our coaching staff slept after a successful season.

Maybe I need to go back to school…. I guess we would have used to say 1 × 10 to the 12th power… I need my slide rule…
But whatever… 1 trillion here… 10 trillion there…. not much difference with today’s fiscal policies…

Post game thoughts
1. lack of defense is not to be tolerated – it looked at times as if we did not have enough players on the field…….and kiss my rear if our corners LINING UP 10 yds off the ball is a good idea. Perhaps move Zack Thomas from the video to the DC position.
2. lack of running game in the second half very questionable
3. receivers need to learn how to catch a fastball.
4. Potts first iNT does not happen if receiver does not break off the route.
5. Potts fumble does not happen if he does not have a helment permanently in his back.
6. Corona did a fine job
7 Tech defense is laughable (thru the tears)
8 Did I mention that our defense sucks and has for the last 10 years?
9 Apparently our linebackers were absent the day they taught defense
10. Oh yeah, the O-line “has not jelled” and should also be called out.
Postivie note: game made me so mad it took my mind off the soaring national debt.
Sadly agree with your observations Blackbeard
Sat in section 122 row 3 for the game and just have to say ouch. Raider defense barely slowed down the Aggie trap play. Result 2 × 100 yard A & M rushers. Typically The Raiders cannot over come 1 x hundred yard rusher. Momentum, ball control etc etc wearing out the Raider defense. On the Raiders offensive effort kind of lacked the killer instinct. I Counted at least 7 x drops by receivers. Not bad throws either, hit the receiver in the hands, face or stomach and was dropped to the turf. And it seemed as if every one of those throws was a legit first down createor. 4 x Raider screens tackled for a loss and 3 x personal fouls by the Tech O line. Result 6 or 7 Raider punts?? Doege made up for one penalty on a long 4th down completion to save the drive.
My take on Potts is he’s not well. Seemed to display a bit of slow recognition, hesitation on pulling the trigger.
O line pretty good but they can’t block forever. Like others would seem that the draw play or shovel pass should cure the defense of just rushing straight up field, i.e. trying to just pin their ears back. But the kicker in the game was 5 x turnovers by the Raiders. I think we got one off of The Aggies? Not to give the Aggies too much credit but it seemed like we that is Mike Leach and Ruffin got a little outcoached, out game managed on this one. But I am so confused about one play – the Raider interception in the End Zone which wasn’t really an defensive interception, Aggie drive stopper i.e. a touchback? Anybody closer to the action?
Regroup. Play on. More power to Doege. Let’s beat Kansas!

You forgot the most important of all...
lack of coaching. Mike is getting whipped in big games this season. I have always been on the bandwagon but I’m not sure he’s invested this season. Don’t get me wrong I do love this guy and believe in him but what the hell is going on. We lost to Texas A&M at night in Lubbock? Where was Ruffin’s defense? Where was Mike’s offense? Piss poor performance by the whole football team including our coaching staff. Sad thing about this years team is I don’t see anything or anybody making a good case for 2010.
Common factor
The common factor is Potts… Potts was also at the helm for all 3 losses. Its not just a coincidence, the team doesn’t play well for him. The defense was flat awful and receivers dropping passes? Missed tackles? Thats not just coaching, thats bad execution. Keep in mind that A&M just straight wanted it more, there was a lot of history at stake and they played harder. This was to even the all time series, you know aTm doesn’t want that. I agree that it was an absolute poor performance on all sides and I’m not saying that is forgivable, but I don’t think its time to say next year is blown. Get SS healthy and keep up the good recruiting. We will be a force in the future. I wanted this one as bad as anybody, but we can still turn the season around and after being picked to finish 5th in the big 12 south, no one expected that.
Execution
You can prepare for a game all week, then you must execute. As a team, our execution was not present. But as usual when things go bad it is ever so hard to stop. It is kinda like hitting in baseball, it is contagious. Seems that way on this site, with all the armchair coaches and Qb’s, everybody has all the solutions ie; Fire the coaching staff, Get better players…… Well, we have excellent coaches that care about these kids and make sure they graduate, they also make sure they have discipline, ask Brandon Carter. But most of all we win, because they are all winners. As for the players, I can tell you first hand that this is a quality group of kids, no stars or ego-maniacs. Trust me they took their whoopin like men, unlike some here, and they will be back next week to tee it up again, win or lose, they will handle better than most of you. I am truly sorry that we don’t win every game (not many do) for your pleasure, but we do win an awful lot. Just a question, have you given all you can to the program? OR should we always expect words as your contribution? Please think about your critiques before you type them, take a breath and look in the mirror and ask yourself, have I given all I can give? Losing that game is not the end of the world.
Arm chair quaterbacking...
is all part of being fan and yes I am highly invested in the red raider club to say the least. When people don’t perform they deserve to get ripped. I would expect nothing less if it were myself. No losing this game isn’t the end of the world and we are talking about a football game but I’m a huge college football fan and alum and I expect players to execute and make progress against lesser opponents. I would feel much better if I knew these guys where still running laps to this moment after that performance at home. I’m glad I had great high school coaches growing up that didn’t accept anything else but winning or never giving less than 100%. This Tech team deserves a good bashing and we as fans should expect it. That sir is why college football is what it is. Do you think Nick Saban or Urban Meyer would accept a game like this.
Still Running Laps
Thank You for being a vested member in the RRCLUB, that sir speaks volumes in it’s self, however being a father of one of those kids that you so eloquently put, “Laughable and Sucks” is hard to accept from anyone. I thank my high school coaches for teaching me to give 100% each snap also, and for preparing for the college game. However they did not fill me in on how fast and furious the college game truly is. Execution is the name of the game, that’s what college football is plain and simple. They out executed on that fine fall Saturday, and they did all evening long. If for one instant you thought or still think that “that effort” was accepted by any member or player on that team then you sir are sorley mistaken. I think that both Meyer and Saban are thanking their lucky stars that they both got Wins last Saturday. So before you make that next post asking for someone’s job, or telling someone they “Suck”, or stating that an outstanding player would make a great coach, think again. I do not know of any Heisman winners Head coaching or Coordinating anywhere. Playing the game well is one thing, coaching is a whole diiferent venue. BTW – I told my son that was the worst effort I have ever watched him give and I would expect more the next time out. I also told him that it is history now and there is nothing you can do about it, get over it and be better prepared for the next game. You see sir I have earned the right to tell him those things, after all, he is my son. I found that continuely beating your dog ,you’ll only end up with a whipped puppy. He took it like a man, as well you should, you see someone loses at every game played. Running laps is punishment, Snyder did not run his team to death after losing large, he just went to work on executing. Sherman did the same after that shellacking by KSU and look what happened. I thank you again for your contributions to Tech football, without people like you supporting the team, well, they just won’t get very far. No reason to be mad and speak, better to think and then speak.
not sure what you read...
stating “laughable and sucks”. Never stated those words and never would. My comment was about taking a ripping from fans and coaches and running laps for such a poor performance. I respect your son as a player of a team I support fully. That by no means is a personal attack but more of a reaction to losing to team they should have beat. You are correct about tech’s execution Saturday. No hard feelings just stating my opinion.
none taken
I was replyingto the post by blackbeard and thought it was yours, my bad. I hope he read my reponse. Yes we should have won that game, but we failed. So bring on the Hawks, as a former K-STATER, I want to win this one badly. Thanks again
the most obvious one

If the Aggies were dropping everyone and their brother into coverage
why in God’s name wasn’t Potts checking to Batch or Jeffers more often? 11 Rushes for Batch and 3 for Jeffers is not enough. I guess Batch averaging over 5 yards a carry isn’t “explosive” enough to compare with throwing the 5th slip screen pass in a row to get blown up in the backfield.

It's my biggest complaint against Leach. You have to force the defense to adjust by running the ball. It's so basic, so fundamental...and shocking that he can't see it.
His tendancy to forget to run the ball is linked to a high percentage of his losses.
I’d love to see some stats of our rushing attempts in our losses through the Leach years.
I've been thinking about Taylor and his hard work to this point.
I hear he is pre-med and or phys. therapy major? Well if you’ve seen “Field of Dreams,” Kevin Costner Ca. 1989, you know about Doc Graham, his destiny wasn’t to get the call from the minor leagues to the big league, his was to be a doctor and he served humanity best in that regard. Maybe Taylor was meant to be a family practitioner and care for families in some small West Texas town, or to be a specialist like a heart surgeon, maybe he will be a research scientist and find the cure for a disease. What I guess I’m getting at is, I don’t know if he wins his job back or not, but learning to juggle big-time D1 ball and your studies is a great way to learn how to make it through life, and if he does go to Medical school, maybe that is his calling, if he’s a Physical Therapist or an Occupational Therapist, he can also help thousands of people during his career. Whatever happens with TP, he’s a quality gentleman and from the town my family rides the wagon to to do our “tradin” so if I ever see him at Joe Allen’s, I’ll buy him a beer.

On pity for Taylor…..he is getting a free education at a fine institution and probably still doesn’t have a hard time enjoying the female population. I feel for the guy, but enough is enough…..he is still living a good life and will get through this without having student loans or maxed out credit cards. Not all of us could say that!

Since you seem to know Abilene’s finer dinning, please keep good thoughts for Harold’s BBQ, the had a fire and will need to do some rebuilding before that can reopen.
It was minor damage but still, living in Abilene without Harold’s would be almost as bad as living in the MetroPLex or god forbid Houston.

Your comments are spot on. I personally think Potts got a bum rap from the fans on this blog and the students. Be that as it may, I know that without that support he has no chance. I wish I knew what the deal is that the O=line can block for others and not for him, why receivers drop HIS passes. Call it chemistry, leadership, maybe they don’t like beards. who knows
I too will be proud to purchase mass quantities of beer for Taylor and we can discuss. (Plano – you are invited too)
+1
I’d be more than happy to buy a bunch of beer and shoot the bull too. Seeing a pattern here. Keep this up, and we got a party. Go Tech!

Potts
Is probably a nice guy and all, but in a year when the O-line is not as good as in the past, his inability to scramble and create under pressure means he’s not the guy for this edition of the Red Raiders.
As for why the rest of the team doesn’t seem t play as well when he is at the helm, who knows.
by BTownTechster on Oct 26, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t think the O-Line changes for Potts, I think (as noted by BTownTechster) that Sheffield can move so when the pocket breaks down he can find the open space. I think (total conjecture here) that the line likes Sheffield more because he makes them LOOK better (how many people are saying the O-Line is improving when Sheffield is in the game even though the pocket is still collapsing in a hurry).
As for receivers, I dunno there. Maybe Potts throws with more velocity, which can be a double-edged sword.
I'm glad coach Leach appears to have taken the high road
Was wondering if he would go off the deep-end as has happened in the past after a loss, especially a loss like this one.
Based on his quotes above, he appears to be looking at this as a learning lesson for everyone including the coaches.
I can’t get past our d-line not being able to dominate this game like the KState d-line did when they played aTm. One of my Ag friends said KState when thru aTm o-line “like swiss cheese”. How in the world we weren’t more effective against these guys is beyond me.
That said, I disagree with Blackbeard on our defense. Inexcusable performance Saturday. But overall our defense has been much improved the past 2 years and I think will continue to get better.
Well sort of high road
He Leach – basically said they were sissies and bathing suit queens in some after the game comments. Heated moment perhaps. Which the Austin paper quickly quoted. Sports writer extraordinaire K. Bohls is a tool.

Lack of support
It seemed to me all along that the team as a whole did not ‘get up’ for Potts. When SS replaced him you hear Bird and Winn really supporting him and saying what a leader he was and the team seemed legitimately excited to play with SS and to play big for him. With Potts it was a different story, the defense didn’t seem to bring the same energy to play when he was leading the offense and that to me is one of the biggest disappointments. There was no rallying behind Potts, IMO. I was one of those that thought this would be his chance to turn it around and learn from past mistakes, but he really looked scared to go downfield and hang on to the ball for more than half a second. Even if Leach was making the calls its Potts job to say ‘no, I can handle this, lets just do what we do’. I hope Potts is successful at whatever he does, but I hope Leach isn’t so stubborn to keep playing him at this point when he clearly is having trouble making decisions.
Seemed to me
Potts had a good game against Texas. He got hit pretty hard near the end of that game. How many QB’s of ours have taken a hit like that? Who wouldn’t be hesitant after that hit and the one that gave him the concussion? Seems to me the O-Line is lacking in protection, even for Sheffield. 2 QB’s injured in one season. We haven’t had injuries among QB’s in the Leach era. Harrell got hurt last year during the Texas game, but it was the end of the season and the injury less severe plus Harrell kept playing. I blame the losses on the whole team.

Imisswesttexas - I agree with you
in that our defense will get better…..my gawd, it has to or we need to give up the game and focus on chess (we are national champions). I don’t know how you can say we are much improved however. Improved over what? Great we shut down Nebraska (wait a minute – we only beat them but did not shut them down) Nebraska’s offense did that for us.
VirtuaCory , my appologies to your mom.
Fair point
Guess it can only get better. I’m not sure how to quantify the improvement. Don’t really like pointing to stats since the only stat that matters is WINS.
But when I look at games from last year like Ok State game or UT game, I see pretty good defensive play. Even the UT game in Austin this year was better than average defensive play. Then I think back to 2005, 2006 or 2007 defenses and I just don’t think we would have had the same results as compared to the 2008 or 2009 teams.
That said, they are far too inconsistent to be considered good. The one thing we can both agree on is the have got to get better week-in, week-out. And the beer of course.

It IS the defense...
I don’t know the answers, but that’s the only way we make it to the ever elusive “next level.”
We have to get better and more consistent on defense (stating the obvious…).
We seem to be getting better athletes, but it just seems the strategy and scheme are not right.
I just hate a “bend but don’t break” defense. Is that really our strategy? (not sayin’ it is, I don’t really know???) Isn’t that just a good description of being pushed down the field until the opposing offense makes a mistake? You’re supposed to all of the sudden stiffen up before they score??? I don’t get it….
What is our defensive strategy?
What about trying to field an aggressive, attacking, physical defense? Do we just not have the personnel for it? Why can’t we try to build ourselves into being as aggressive on defense as we are on offense?
Sorry, I’ve just got a lot of questions and not really any answers… But it just seems that they lie somewhere on the defensive side of the ball…

The Cruelset Thing Leach Could Do Would Be to Start Potts Again Saturday
In front of the home crowd against Kansas, the crowd will eat him alive. I think it’s obvious to everybody at this point that Potts is not a good quarterback for this system. He’s had enough games to work through problems and he has gotten worse each game. That’s not an insult & it’s not meant to be mean. It’s just an observable fact. If Leach remains stubborn sticking to his original choice & throws Potts to the wolves again, it will be pointlessly cruel to Potts & won’t do the program any favors either. Let’s give Deoge a full game against a quality opponenet. The experience will do him good & we might be able to pull off the win. Then Sheffield comes back and maybe we can right this ship in time to beat the two Oklahomas.
that would be cruel
I say lets get the kid we dragged out of the bleachers and made him our kicker. Matt Williams for QB.
If Donnie Carona can lead the team in tackles (as he did against Nebraska)
Then I don’t don’t see why Matt Williams can’t be the next great Tech QB.
food for thought
Potts has 15 TD’s – Pony-boy McCoy 14
Potts has 8 INTs – Pony-boy McCoy 8
Whinning McBrown has all wins – we don’t. I think maybe it could be something other than just who we “plug and play”. I’m just sayin.
It’s all about timing. Where do you get those TDs? Where do you get those INTs? Also, I’m pretty sure we have less rushing TDs than Texas.
The Oklahoma game was sloppy as hell and UT caught a HUGE break in that one (in that OU was not playing well), but if you want the difference between McCoy 14-8 v. Potts 15-8 here it is:
Games where UT’s opponent has scored 28 pts or more: 0
Games where Tech’s opponent has scored 28 pts or more: 4
(Texas has played 5 (of 7) opponents in the top 100 Sagarin rating, Tech has played 5 (of 8) with a top 100 Sagarin rating)
But simply put, 14 TDs and 8 INTs look a LOT better when the opposition doesn’t have many points. This is not to bash Ruffin, I think our Defense is getting BETTER, but we’re not there yet. And although I think Mack Brown is an awful coach (amazing recruiter though), I think Muschamp is (unfortunately) a PHENOMENAL coach. I honestly, SINCERELY hope some big program throws a truckload of money at him and lures him off the UT campus after this season.
(If I thought we had a chance in hell of getting him, he’s the one DC I’d toss Leach for)
Wait
UT caught a HUGE break in that one (in that OU was not playing well)
So did OU catch a huge break too because our offense played significantly worse than we are capable of?

both teams were bad
When McCoy throws an interception because he’s harassed, that’s good Defense.
When Bradford gets knocked out on a totally unstopped defender (perfectly clean hit) that’s good defense.
When an OU return man tries to grab a punt on the sideline, FOR NO REASON, and then muffs it to UT, that is awful, AWFUL playing.
And that doesn’t even include the huge pile of penalties.
Again, granted, both teams played below their abilities and terrible football, but from what I saw, that game went to the team that was “less bad” and in that game that was Texas. So UT got REALLY LUCKY in that in their “biggest game of the year” their opponent played WORSE than they did. And if you’re saying that UT played badly (which I don’t deny) then that’s a testament to how TERRIBLE OU played.
Totally Agree
That’s what I’m saying! What’s up with the O-Line? Seriously, this is the first season Leach has dealt with injured QB’s. Not one, but now TWO. That says a lot. I can not believe the crowd called “No more Potts.” I’d have been saying, “Bring out the D.” Students spoiled after one stellar season! Winning a game is not a right! it’s hard work. Support the ones with the guts to go out and play, win or lose.

I think Potts has the mechanical ability to be an elite QB. But so do dozens and dozens of kids playing in college. Some guys are great practice players but can’t make it translate on the field. Some guys just can’t raise the level of play of his teammates, like all the great ones can.
I think, and it’s just me, but I think that Potts did really well in the spring and fall camps. He probably stood out above the crowd in that setting. But when we put him in against live opposing defenses, it just didn’t work out as well for whatever reason.
Some guys, while not great on the practice field, just have that innate ability to make the right read, right play check, and right throw when it matters (Sheffield may be that kind of kid who is so-so in practice). I’m not even sure there’s a lesson for Leach in all this on how he evaluates off season ability. He went with who he thought was the best option and it was just the wrong one. But the only way to know for sure is to test them out in live games, so Potts got the keys.
Maybe Leach felt Potts was “the guy” and even though the result on the field was not what he was looking for, he needed to give Potts every opportunity to show what he shows in practice. I can understand that if that’s his thinking, so I don’t begrudge Leach for sticking with Potts a little longer than he maybe should have. I don’t know if any of this is the reality of the situation at Tech, but it kind of makes sense to me.
He stood out in the Texas game to me. I did not expect a win there, but I would have been happy if we did win. I was excited to see what he had to offer. Once he took that helmet to helmet hit near the end of the game, I thought that’s gonna effect him. I think he was picked to start for a reason. I think he’s a good QB and the Defense and O-Line need to get their act together. You know the saying, Offense wins games, Defense wins championships.

What gets me is the idea that Harrell wasn’t good his first season and that “loyal” fans will stand behind Potts because he was Leach’s pick. The deal with EVERY quarterback under Leach EXCEPT Potts is that they could win any game. The fans (and team) had confidence in them. You see none of that in Potts. Leach picked him and he may have been the best choice. He may still be, but what good is that without fan and team support? The stat lines don’t show you everyhting. Watch that last drive in the UofH game and you’ll see that the hope that traveled alongside previous QB’s was gone.
disagree, re: Harrell
Harrell had growing pains and issues, but no one really pushing to take the job from him. Go back and watch the Missouri games with Harrell if you think he could “win any game”. Harrell’s left side was VASTLY underrated in 2008. (Vazquez is with San Diego and Rylan Reed was a BEAST that for some reason doesn’t get the props he deserves, see: Gator Bowl, Rylan Reed v. Chris Long)
Where was the D in the UH game?
We could have beaten UofH if our D was playing harder. I am behind Potts. I thought he looked like a badass against Texas and was excited for the season. The team got down after the UofH loss because they know they could have won that game. A game is not won or lost because of one player. The difference between Harrell’s season is he had Crabtree, another badass. Harrell was one player away from a mediocre season. Harrell wasn’t injured early in the season. Harrell was without Crab his first season! The fans and team are spoiled from one stellar season. This team is the same team it was before Crabtree. There are still more games to play, and if we win them, we are still a great team. With an attitude like the one developing from a couple of losses, we don’t stand a chance against our remaining opponents.

Interesting story line that Seth used to open today’s comments, referencing the death of his grandfather.
My dad died last evening. If there is anything good that comes from that, other than the ending of the pain he lived with, it is that with such an event one does look more at what is important and what is lesser, and the value of one’s time. The most important events today, even with working with a funeral home, making plans with family for when to have a service and all the things that must be coordinated, arranged and scheduled, the most significant is the call from a loved one who simply expresses love through a few kind words.
Regarding the football game, I do not see how anyone can pick any single element of TTU’s performance and call it the cause of the loss…name a part of the game that was executed well enough to win…yes, had the defense held the other side to less points than the offense scored, the offense scored enough….reverse the logic and it is equally valid to say had the offense played better, not made their mistakes, the defense could have held the score lower.
Please make an analysis that is based on something other than a few hard numbers developed to give the media something to talk about. For example, if one subscribes to the concept that Mike Leach is a pretty smart guy, look at his analysis, even with the sarcasm, and recognize that he sees the failure in a different arena than one side or other of the football….we all know from his past, had that been the case, he would have said as much.

The jury's out
I was excited with the firing of Setencich in 07. I thought McNeil would add much needed “mojo” to the D and he did. In January 08 Leach called McNeil the best DC in the country. Was that just polite hyperbole or did Leach really think that? don’t know. Even Craig James comments on McNeil’s ability as DC. I’ve actually heard Leach say that defense wins games!!! OMG!
When Ruff took the helm, he promised a more attacking defense, remember? A simpler scheme, fewer plays and more aggression. Blitzes from the LBs and Corners, zone blitzes, and the occasional safety blitz. This was pretty much we all wanted to hear from our DC.
I haven’t seen that type of attacking defense, a few sparks here and there, but I believe that we should give McNeil 5 years to get his guys in. As pointed out above, this is McNeil’s 2nd year as DC. I don’t think he has the talent to run a defense like he wants, so you go with what you got and do your best. If, by 2012 we’re still having this discussion, then it’s time to move on and find another DC. The turnaround is not going to happen over night and we have got to give the man a chance. Let him get his guys in, set up his scheme, turn the attitude of defense at Tech around, and change the minds of the rest of the staff about defense.
Spot on
comments…..it is a catch 22 about talent for his scheme versus show me what you have with what you have. None of us are at his level of dissecting defense, but to my amateur eyes I don’t see him do anything out of the ordinary and it warrants the vanilla tag that the Nebraska OC said.

…I just don’t know what to think about Tech this year…
I knew it would be a bit of a comedown compared to last year (I predicted 8-4). But I didn’t expect to already have three losses with four to play. And three of those games are going to be bigtime dog fights.
If we can go 2-2 over the last four, I’ll call that a success given how the year has progressed. If Sheff hadn’t been injured, I might have felt even better about the final four games. I hope Doege is the man and can impress the heck out of all of us with a little late season magic. That would be nice…
Injuries Make Mortals of Us All
It is very difficult to play consistently when players are dropping like flies (E.g. 2009 Cotton Bowl). Fans and the press both seem to think injuries don’t matter. They do. They affect individual players and they affect everything on a team, particularly tempo. Tech has lost more players to injury this year than any Tech team I can remember watching (other than 1977-78). The players who have been forced to play or play out of position can’t wave a magic wand; all they can do is keep trying. We’ll find out Saturday what this Texas Tech is going to do. All I can do is support them and stay enthusiastic for the future.
Condolences to TallMike. My suffering father passed in 2005 and it still sucks and I miss him.
I agree
This is the first season Leach has had to deal with QB injuries. That speaks volumes to me. Something is not clicking, and I don’t know what it is, but I don’t blame one team member for it, that’s for certain.

Didn't Symons play with a torn ACL?
I seem to remember B.J. Symons (who I still consider the best QB Leach has had at Tech) playing with an injury his one year as a starter.
Injuries
We played short in the O-line and D-line not to mention the Db’s and safeties, yes we have a lot of injuries. B Sharpe was so sick he was throwing up, but he stilled tried to go, Howard is playing w/ a stinger and he went. Most of the team is trying to pick up the pieces and go on. When you have people that have had 2 days to prepare for a new position there are going to be busts, TAM executed well and took advantage of their chances, they saw what worked and went with it. They won, we lost, and guess what we are going to play again this Saturday. Hope everyone comes out and roots for the team, because this is a team sport and no 1 person stands to blame. Let’s go have some Hawks for lunch
Everyone played to their star potential!
We played like 2 and 3 star recruits and A&M played like 4 and 5 star. Simple as that.
Stars
Star potential, have we lowered our standards or are we getting better? Leach is 76-39 and we sell-out every stadium we go to. This yr Texas, Houston, Nebraska. It absolutley amazes me that everyone wants to beat us so bad that they bring the house. When concert after concert is sold out you can bet people are going to see the stars. This kids are stars for just doing what they do, not many of us could even attempt it.*
