Disappointed in the fans and students as well

Once again, I am disappointed in some of our students and fans.  Did anyone notice how after a Texas A&M field goal, the Tech students would throw the ball backwards over the roof of the coaches offices on the south end?  Why would anyone do that?  Throw the ball back down to the ball boy.  I graduated in 2005 so I can remember how rowdy the students get, and I like that.  I can understand how a few beers and being down by 24 points can upset a person, but come on.  I work with an Aggie who graduated in 1957, yes, that is not a typo, 1957.  He went to the game.  He is one of the most arrogant people I have ever met.  The very first thing he said to me this morning was "I would be embarrassed if the A&M students ever acted like the Tech students did."  I had no response.  I tried the "If you can't act like a total idiot in college, when can you?", but even I didn't buy that.

Also, when the A&M band was marching, there were several people standing up and booing the band?  Really?  You are going to boo the band?!  That even more emberassing than the way our football team played.  They are in the band!!

I sit in Section 3, 20 rows up.  I am half the age (26) of 90% of the people I sit with.  The people to my immediate left and right have been to every Texas Tech game home and away since the 70s.  They were truly pleased with the A&M band and were trying to enjoy it, but couldn't because of people booing the band.  I don't care for all the tradition and rules A&M has, in fact I think most of them are pretty dumb.  I can even tolerate the "Tech's not Tier 1" crap every Aggie throws out because those people are idiots.  Common sense, people skills, and work ethic get you the $$.  Attending a Tier 1 university 10 years ago doesn't.  What I can't tolerate is the way some of the Tech fans acted during the game, I don't care if it is Texas A&M.  I went out of my way to shake every Aggie's hand I saw at the game, and a few of the responses I got were rude, but it is just a football game.  I am as die hard a red raider as there is.  Every single t-shirt I have is Texas Tech.  My 2 year old and 3 month old daughters have more Tech clothing than anything.  The 2 year old already gets her guns up when she sees a double t logo.  I am heart broken over this loss, but as my wife, who is much smarter and wiser than I am, reminded me, it is a football game.

Go home, kiss your wife, hug your kids, and thank God for your blessings.   Just thinking out loud here.

Wreck 'Em Tech!

Dustin

The loud minority

Overall I see your frustration, I traveled to this game and sat in the student section near the North end zone and overall the students dealt with the horrible display in front of them as well as could be expected, but its amazing how a single guy can leave you with such as bad taste in your mouth. One guy in the row behind me just happened to be the kind of fan I can’t stand. Yelling above everybody else he began with how are defense sucked, how we were terrible and was filled with so much negativity from the opening kick. Then that negativity turned to animosity towards the Aggies and we had to listen to him yell obscenities towards the band only a 30 yards away. He continued through half time yelling obscenities at the Aggie band. My wife (who is a proud ex-member of the Goin’ Band) had to turn around and ask him to quiet down as she tried to listen to the Aggie band. The student just got louder. His friends were whispering to each other embarrassed by his behavior. I have to say that the majority of the fans around us were great throughout the whole game, but its amazing how one guy can ruin an experience.

I Second this Post

I second this post. I traveled to Nebraska for the game two weekends ago and saw first hand how to truly be treated by fans. If you’ve never gone to a game in Lincoln I strongly suggest you go and I strongly suggest you take your blinders off when you go. I’m all about being a crazy Raider fan but have some class. Being known as the worst fans in the Big XII is a complete and total insult. The fact that some of us think it is cool speaks highly of our collective maturity as a program. Until we decide that we know how to act to opposing team fans and we act like we’ve been there before we will never have respect and quite frankly we don’t deserve it. Winning the game on the field is one thing but when a win is overshadowed by a bunch of drunk asses changing the words to a fight song and yelling at an opposing band it doesn’t leave much to be proud of. While at Nebraska I was the only Raider fan in my entire section from the field level to the top (I went with a high school buddy who played baseball at Nebraska so our tickets were in prime Nebraska alumni territory). Every time Tech made a good play I stood and cheered and yelled like crazy. Right before halftime I stood to yell after Tech made a good play and a Nebraska fan behind me stood up and gave me a high five in good spirits. Everyone around chuckled and thought it was funny. I never once heard anything negative and I was welcomed carte blanche to any tailgate I approached. The day an opposing fan is welcomed like that in Lubbock will be the day we line up to ice skate in Hell. If you don’t want to show respect to other teams then don’t wear Tech gear and don’t represent yourself as Techsans. There I said it and it feels good.

I just don’t understand…college kids can be idiots. When I was at Tech and we were losing, we got hammered and booed and cussed and whatever. I have been to games at Auburn, Virginia, Maryland, Pitt (I lived a lot of years on the east coast), Stanford, Cal (I lived in SF for several years), Minnesota, OU, LaTech and pretty much every D-I school in Texas except Rice, Houston and UTEP. Trust me…the students at every venue have a unique way of greeting their foes. To think this is a Tech thing, or that our students are any different than anywhere else is silly.

Do I like what they do? No, of course not. But don’t let that sort of thing beat you down, and don’t let the opinion of a visitor ruin it for you. Neb is a unique place and is known throughout college football as a friendly little haven. But they are the lone outlier, not the rule.

I read over on raiderpower a post from an Aggy who actually was at the game and had nothing but good things to say about the Texas Tech experience. It depends on who you talk to you and what their life attitude is in general. You yourself said this aggy fan was the most arrogant person you know. Well, that’s what people like him say. They always find a button to push – and then jump up and down on it all night long.

Even Nebraska has its unruly ones

I had friends that were called every form of the word homosexual you can think of, and plenty you couldnt haha. We made friends with some Aggie guys btw. The whole hand shaking, “man yall are really putting it to us”, all of it. The reason Tech gets such a bad rep is because the student section is so close to the visitors. Have you ever been to an LSU game? Those are the “bad” fans.

I shook lots of aggies hands Saturday

night after the game. I heard nothing but good things from all aggies around me and at the tailgating venues. This is heated rivalry but kids will be kids in the student sections. I have no problem with heckling fans(kids) because that is why we have home games people. It’s supposed to be a hostile environment to a certain degree. There is a threshold on what is or needs to be acceptable but lets not become a bunch of sensitive babies here. Be loud but be respectful is where I stand on this one. Lastly, congratulate the team that kicked our ass when necessary. Better days will come.

I had a running, friendly conversation with the atm fans sitting near me. No probs at all, but we are all a little older and a little more sober than when I was a student.

I didn’t see any inappropriate behavior anywhere around me. I did see some pretty good restraint by Tech fans in general after the game. There were a handful of Aggie students whooping it up pretty good in the midst of hundreds of Tech fans leaving the stadium and other than a few looks that would kill nobody bothered them. All things being considered, they (aggies) should know better than that. They were practically begging for trouble, not to mention being downright rude in somebody else’s yard.

In that situation...

All bets are off. My comments were pointed only at those Tech fans that constantly instigate for no other reason than being 3 sheets to the wind.

School songs

I just wish our students would let the other school play its school song without booing or doing Raider Power. Boo the team coming out if you must (I don’t care for that either) but the school song should be treated with respect. It was embarrassing to say the least!

by sadielady on Oct 26, 2009 5:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ditto. Very embarrassing. There were a # of atm fans around us & were most cordial.
Am sure they would have enjoyed hearing their school song as much as we enjoyed ours( as well as their bands’ performance). Need to show respect in order to receive it.

Yeah well all I hear from Aggies in dallas is that our fans are the worst in the big 12. Its very annoying. There were aggies next to us in section 8 and everyone was very nice to them. Just because people screw a curse word when Potts throws a bad interception does not mean our fans are bad. And throwing the ball over the back makes no sense because we probably paid for the ball but whatever. Are these things that big of a deal? Booing the band is a bit annoying b/c who cares. Just ignore there boring block marching. Aggie fans pride themselves as the perfect little person who just yells perfect little things enthusiastically all the time, but of course this isn’t the case. And just b/c a tech fan cusses at taylor potts doesn’t mean he is a bad fan. We were voted toughest place to play last year for a reason.

But yes I’d like to see people not yell the F word in the fight song and not boo bands. Maybe I’m never around all these crazy people but I just don’t see where Tech fans are anything but passionate.

Are you talking about the "F" word during our fightsong?

Cause honestly, I always loved that at the end.

“we will kill em, we will wreck em, we will F****** Texas Tech em”

I know it’s juvenile, but I still like it….

That has decreased tremendously over the past 3 years. I dont think the incoming freshman are learning it anymore. Or they dont like it. I only really notice it coming out that way on huge plays.

Maybe we should have a new, required class for all incoming freshmen.

It teaches them the intricacies of being a good school representative. Be crazy, but be cool.

College kids will be crazy

And that is fine. I’m sure there are things I should not have done when I was in school. Even though I don’t remember them which kinda makes my point.
Not really a fan of the boo’ing during the opponents school song and at halftime (really? who cares???).

But the thing I can’t get past is so-called fans chanting “No More Potts” as I have heard. UNACCEPTABLE in my opinion. I’m all for people showing their displeasure with Potts by cheering Doege coming in the game. But to have your home crowd chanting against a specific person is rediculous.

If the students doing this think they are such an authority then strap on a helment and get YOUR ASS on the practice field and prove it. Otherwise, just cheer for the guy who replaces him and leave the personal chants out of it.

I didnt want to make an entire post about this, so its a long comment

You want to say that our fans are bad, understandable. But, have you ever been to a rivalry game somewhere else and been near the student section? Our fans are nothing out of the ordinary. I would like for us to be known for our great sportsmanship, but aTm uses every chance they can to make comments about us being classless or academically unacceptable. Like I said, our fans can get a little bit too rowdy from time to time, but it is always blown way out of proportion. I just wish I had a camera on me saturday to hear all of the remarks made by atm fans. Nothing at all compared to anything I heard from Tech fans. And did anyone notice that while our guy was laying on the field not moving, the Aggie band played what seemed to be every one of their songs while their fans sang along? Hows that for sportsmanship? That was one thing that impressed me from our fans, when an Aggie was down, our fans were for the most part quiet with a gun up. (But that of course was taken by the Aggies behind me as “classless tech”) And they make it a big deal that we boo the officials, yet they hiss in unison. How is hissing different from booing? Alot of the stuff you are hearing about Tech fans is really just some sort of Aggie inferiority complex. And in case you were wondering, here are a few good reason as to why we hate them so. From the daily toreador website. http://www.dailytoreador.com/news/fans-act-out-in-a-m-loss-1.2038339

“Real University Alum Tue Oct 27 2009 15:29 A survey? Way to go. Your school is a joke. Your fans are white trash. Your football team might be the only redeeming thing about that place, and that probably won’t even last more than a few more years. When the time comes to move on in the real world, if half of you even graduate, I take comfort in knowing you will be at the bottom of the totem pole. "

“Mike Tue Oct 27 2009 14:18 As an A&M former student, and present donor, I just wanted to let you tceh fans in on something. The whole Big XII recognizes you fans as the white trash, no good, scum of the conference. While you have had a good 6 or 7 years in football, yall are on your way back to the bottom- the natural pecking order- whether it be athletics or academics.
Thanks and Gig ’em "

So why were Ags on our school newspaper’s website to talk crap? Kind of adding fuel to the fire dont ya think? To me, making up lies about a university’s educational standards on their own site is much worse than dropping an f bomb here and there, or throwing a football over a wall. Could be that I’m young and dumb, but it just really seems like Aggie fans are the true trash of the nation. And it does seem that our sportsmanship at games has gotten better over the past 3 years at least. I hear less and less of the other version of the fight song, and if you thought this atm game was bad, you should have been there 2 years ago. Of course, they had guaranteed a victory and such so it may as well been deserved.

Oh, I forgot to mention

the stuff thrown at me in College Station last year. This goes both ways, at least it doesnt take tear gas to calm us down like in some rivalries.

by RdrPwr on Oct 27, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I started to reply to “Mike” on the site as well as to “A” and mention that I have experienced my fair share of poor fan behavior in College Station. Are we to assume that “Mike” polled the “whole Big12” to determine Tech has the worst fans???
It’s kinda tells you all you need to know when someone is complaining about fan behavior and then goes on to call Tech “white trash” and “scum”. Kind of ironic in a way.

I mainly take issue with the Potts’ chants. There are other ways to get your point across.

by imisswesttexas on Oct 27, 2009 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you

but I wouldnt expect much better from any school’s students. I was just glad the boos and chanting didnt start until halftime (after the second pick). From hearing what students were saying all week, it seems they showed some restraint to hold off that long.

WOW....

they actually admitted that we are having a good 6 or 7 years of football…….

Nothing New

I attended the Tech at OU game last year & their fans (not students) threw our ball out of the building also, it’s just a harmless fun prank. They do the same thing when OSU comes to Norman- no harm, no foul.

College students are getting more out of control & dumb at hometown sporting events than ever before, maybe the school should police the student sections and do something about it.

Booing a marching band? Get a life.
