That was pretty funny at the time. I was impressed.
This is a tough year as a Tech fan…but imagine being a Hawaii fan? They have completely fallen off the map. Just a couple of years ago they were the toast of the college football world: Colt Bennan and his unique story of redemption and the long-dreamed of Sugar Bowl berth. Only to get walloped up one side and down the other. Then June Jones bolts for the Hilltop of SMU and our old buddy Greg McMackin takes over on the island. Holy Lord! What a mess they are now.
We at least have hope going for us. Which is nice.

It's nice being relevant.
I think we all forget that sometimes. An 11-1 regular season will inflate expectations beyond what is probably within reason, leading to disappointment that is likewise unwarranted. Having said that, I make no apologies for expecting much from this team; that’s how I define loving something. My mom tells me I am handsome all the time. The things we care about always disappoint us the most.
We always deceive ourselves twice about the [things] we love – first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage. – Albert Camus
Or something like that LET’S GET DRUNK AND FORGET ABOUT IT TEXAS A&M DIDN’T HAPPEN

Totally agree, high expectations are a bitch
The prospect of going 8-4 or 7-5 was always less painful back when “Typical Tech” wasn’t just the norm, it was an upgrade from the last two decades. Now that we’ve all tasted the fruit, it’s tough to go back. That said, I’m still convinced that one or two nasty left turns doesn’t mean we’re heading in the wrong direction as a program. If anything, a loss this painful will be a valuable teaching moment for the younger guys on the team who entered the program during the reign of King Crabtree, and just assumed that level of success comes easy for Tech.
We’re underdogs. That’s just the Texas Tech mentality: we don’t have the money, we don’t have the grand winning tradition- hell, we don’t even have particularly nice buildings, but we don’t give a goddamn because the reason we’re tough and nasty and occasionally dangerous is because no one has ever just given us anything, up to and including the benefit of the doubt. Every scrap of success and respect this football program claims must be ripped violently from those who have grown accustomed to it and take it for granted. If that’s a lesson that has to be seared painfully into the minds of each new generation of Red Raiders and Red Raider fans, then maybe that’s not so bad.

It is not the expectations that are tough to manage, it is the disappointment. We are disappointed even when the expectations are not high. The ability to cope in the face of extreme disappointment is the challenge.
