Season Reset
Okay, so are at the 2/3 pole on this season. Four games to play, so we have a large enough body of work to look at where we stand in the NCAA and assess how good or not we really are. We lost two fairly close games early on then we had Saturday, which I'm completely through thinking about. Time to move past that.
But really, where are we and how far can we go with the status quo? Take a look at the rankings in various categories. Have we made the progress everyone wants to see after 10 years? Now, please know that last statement is not a call to replace Leach - I'm over that, too, unless he keeps flirting with every school that calls (granted, I think his phone will stay silent this off season). I'm okay with him as our head guy. It's clear defense has not shown much abject improvement. Is that the players or the coaching or the scheme or the calls? Or bad luck?
Bear in mind there are 120 teams in D-IA
OFFENSE:
Passing Efficiency Offense: #11 (2 in the Bix II)
Passing Offense: #1 (1)
Rushing Offense: #118 (12)*
Total Offense: #4 (2)
Scoring Offense: #5 (2)
Sacks Allowed: #93 (11)*
DEFENSE
Passing Efficiency Defense: #46 (6)
Pass Defense: #91 (8)*
Rushing Defense: #57 (8)
Total Defense: #73 (8)*
Scoring Defense: #62 (9)*
Sacks Earned: #11 (2)
Tackle for Loss: #39 (6)
SPECIAL TEAMS
Net Punting: #97 (10)*
Punt Returns: #53 (7)
Kickoff Returns: #21 (3)
MISC
Turnover Margin: #103 (12)*
Nothing really startling in any of these numbers. The results are so-so on the field, so you'd expect so-so statistics which is what we have here. What suggestions - if you had a say - to fix the areas of concern (those with an *)?

Start with turnovers
Make the skill position players run through a gauntlet of defensive players trying to strip the ball. That’s what the Cowboys did with Duane Thomas when he had the fumblitis. Plus that might set a lightbulb on over the defensive players heads that part of their job is to strip the ball when given a chance.

I agree about the turnovers. That should be the top priority right now. Usually the mantra is “Defense wins games” but in Tech’s case who relies so much on the offense for success, it should be “Turnovers and penalties lose games”. That is the bottom line. With a so-so defense, it is up to the whole team to cut down on TO’s and penalties. That is Tech’s best defense. Shore up this kind of stuff. It’s about discipline.
Tech’s offense is so beautiful when it is clicking. When it protects the ball, it is art in motion. Part of their canvas is continually moving the ball and putting it in the endzone. When that gets interrupted, trouble starts. When the offense gets clumsy and does not protect the ball, it’s like wasting its talent on being a mural artist in the ghetto and letting it get vandalized. It doesn’t matter how great of an artist the muralist is, they will never be taken seriously.

exactly
It seems like this season’s turnovers are out of control. I know Potts is where most of them have probably come from but what about all the fumbles among our backs. I would also add that penalties are giving opposing teams great opportunity to against us. Our defense hasn’t made any huge impact forcing turnovers.

Make Sure All The Fans...
Yell at the top of their lungs at a home game how pitiful our team is so the team can hear it. That sounds like a great way to start the process…oh wait we did that this weekend. Let’s see how that one plays out.
