Best route from Plano?
Anyone from Plano, Allen, McKinney area know best way to Lubbock. I'm not from Plano and we've always made a pit stop in Vernon when traveling to games. Not this time, so I can't decide between 114 and 20 to 84. 20 is 30 mi. Further, but might be faster going 76 mph or so, but I'd be taking 121 down through Cowtown at rush hour Fri. I'm sure Raider 1992 has done it 500 times, I'm from out by Abilene, so need help.

That's how I always went from my hometown
Thanks, can’t leave until 5:00 Friday so just wanted the fastest route.
If your leaving at 5:00 Friday You may want to go through Denton
Head north to 380 (tollway would be best, Central would work too). Take 380 to the outskirts of Denton, but take the loop 288 bypass around the north side of town to I35. Go south on 35 & pick up 380 west. 380 west will merge with 114 past Bridgeport. 114 is 19th street in Lubbock, so that will take you right to campus.
That’s the way we always went to & from Lubbock when I was in college in the 1970’s. I only suggest it so you can avoid the Friday rush hour traffic in Dallas, Ft Worth & the mid cities. The only law is, you have to stop at the Dairy Queen in Seymour.
DQ in Decatur ain't bad. Just sayin.
That’s how we go to Vernon, Tollway to 380, then 287 to BFE. Looking forward to dinner in Seymour. I wonder if my suburban niece has ever even had a DQ Hunger Buster. I know the nephew we are bringing has. He’s from a small town.
Seymour was the halfway point & since all the Richardson & Plano kids (I was a Richardson kid) stopped there on the drive home & the drive back it was like a high school reunion in the Seymour Dairy Queen the Sunday after Thangsgiving or the end of semester. Have a great time. We’ll be tailgating in the courtyard behind the engineering building next to Holden Hall.
That would be nice
In fact my wife is flying there to meet us, but I’m hauling two kids up there and the weekend has already gotten quite expensive with four tix, two hotel rooms, the Tech gear I’ll but the kids when we get there…..food in Raider Alley, beer in Alumni Pavilion.
I cant remember the exact roads, but from plano it may be best to go 114 and such, you go north of dallas and come into LBK directly from the east. Beautiful scenery as well.
I'd take tollway to 380 to Decatur
Then connect to 114, just trying to see if going through all those small towns might slow us down. I like the idea of the scenery, but I have a pretty new truck and haven’t been able to get a grill guard yet. (Deer at night! I’m a magnet for those pesky little creatures this time of year ) I appreciate all of your thoughts. Thanks.
We live in McKinney..
and I’ve been making this drive for years. The 380/114/82 route is best for heading out from this side of town and that time. Never seen many deer. It’ll be about 5.5hrs. Quite a bit of distance between the small towns so they don’t slow you much. Expect to clean a lot of bugs off of your windshield when you get to Lubbock : )
Map from DFW
Take the loop around the north side of Denton. The section from Denton to Decatur on 380 is usually kinda slow. Watch for cops around Bridgeport, Runaway Bay, west of Seymour and especially Dickens to Crosbyton and just west of Crosbyton. Saw three in that last stretch last week.
Best route back is 84 to I-20 to 121. You’ll likely be in some type of Tech convoy that’ll be moving fairly quickly so that passes time nicely. If you wait til Sunday morning to leave, the kids will be able to see lots and lots and lots of wind turbines along the way. Watch for cops north of Slaton, around Snyder, Sweetwater and Weatherford. Stupid speed limit drops to 65 when you enter Parker County. The nice thing about this route is that, once you clear Post, you won’t run into another traffic light until you get off of 121.

That's they way I always go...
Beeen making the drive from Plano to Lubbock for the past 30 years, 380 to 114 to 82. With Bush to 35, then to 380 saves about 30 minutes from the old 75 to 380 through Denton route. Great scenery also, make sure you tune in KSEY 94.3 when you’re about 30 miles out from Seymour. Great station!!! I have to admit that in all my years and trips, I’ve not seen any deer, now I have seen plenty of coyotes and hogs. I love making that drive. There’s nothing quite like driving onto or off of the caprock, (just before Crosbyton) breathtaking.

Deer
Last year I was headed back at the end of thanksgiving break, saw 26 deer in five minutes. Several HUGE bucks. Was too busy freaking out about how bad I wished I had a gun (this is middle of no where, and you would see lights coming for miles) to worry about actually hitting one.
Last year coming back from OSU at Tech
a night game, on either side of Paducah for 10 miles, must have seen 20 or 30. Wife had a brand new car. I honestly was going 30 to keep from hitting them. Had my father-in-law in passenger seat spotting for me. In my old truck, I’d just hit em, shoot em in the head, drag em to the side for the coyotes to cleen up, and hose off the blood and fur when I got home, but I haven’t been able to get a new ranch hand on this new truck. Starting to think
I might save a $500 deductable by taking the I 20 route.
Probably so
but these were the kind of bucks you would have wanted to bring on home. Coyotes arent worthy of 12 point bucks with 2 ft+ spreads! But this time of year, 20 may be a far better choice for that reason.
There have been a few times I've been tempted
To “harvest” some back strap at midnight out there, but you never know where those sneaky game wardens are. On a funny note, I had two roomates who got drunk and went “Duck Hunting” on a playa lake in Lubbock. The worst thing, aside from the obvious, was they raided our house and seized my roomate’s shotgun which had been handed down for generations. I always think of that when I’m tempted, plus someone poached one on my farm out in Eastland Co. last January and I’m guessing they left him there cause our GW said the spread between the antlers was too short.
Good Point
I had a friend in highschool get caught poaching deer (from his truck at about 3pm in march haha), and it wasnt a good thing for him at all. But one thing I dont quite get is why, if you hit one on the road, you have to leave it lying there. Seems to me it would be more “humane” to at least use the animal that is going to die anyways…. Maybe im just getting desperate because my freezer is getting low, but it makes sense to me.
Made the drive many times...
It really depends on where you are starting from in Plano (now that it has expanded so far west). My best advice is to get over to DFW, take 183 W until you hit I-820 W on the outer fringe of Fort Worth. Follow I-820 W (this will take you around downtown/Ft. Worth) and then hit I-20 W. At Roscoe, take 84 to Lubbock.
I liked driving 380 and 114 for a scenic view, but in a hurry, I always stayed interstate.
I used to know all the speed traps, but it’s been too long ago!
Thanks JB
I actually know some of those troopers in Parker County, it’s such a great speed trap cuz the EPA makes states which get fed hwy money keep speed limits at 65 for any county “touching” DFW (major city) which means you can’t haul ass until you hit Palo Pinto Co. Close to the Brazos. I hate that law because Collin Co. falls under that rule and I can’t get going good until practically Greenville when making my weekly trip to Commerce to visit my elderly Mother. The law used to be 65 for towns of over 100k , so when I was in college Abilene went from 70 to 65, which made a great speed trap. TMI? Just pissed me off when I made that trip frequently.
Of course we will be coming back via I-20....
I never miss an opportunity to eat at Mary’s in Strawn. For any of you who have driven the stretch of 20 between Abilene and Ft. Worth for years, there’s a little town called Strawn about 3 miles north of the highway, heading west, it’s just before that giant hill (Ranger Hill). It’s exactly 76 mi from both Abi and FTW. Best chicken fry in Texas. It’s even been on Texas Country Reporter. Try it on the way home, The Cowboy game is at noon anyway, you’ll thank me.
