Fat Little Girlfriends :: Discussed

First, read the FanShot I quickly posted last night (or check out FWST's Dwain Price blog-post about Leach's comments yesterday).  Second, watch the video from NewsChannel 11 after the jump for the full effect of Captain Mike Leach's comments about the fat little girlfriends, as well as his thoughts on Dumb and Dumber.  You should be completely caught up at this point.  Here's the money-quote:

"No, I am not aplogizing to any of them.  Absolutely not. You know we closed up that little room over there as coaches, and as coaches we failed to get through to (the players). It was a failure on the part of coaches and players. As coaches we failed to get through to them, and as coaches we failed to make our coaching points and our points more compelling than their fat little girlfriends.  Now their fat little girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one thing, their fat little girlfriends are telling them what they want to hear, which is 'how great you are,' and 'how easy it's going to be.' And we had a bunch of people who wanted to win the football game, but nobody wanted to play the football game.  That defies every level of work ethic that exists with regard to football. As coaches we have to solve our failure on reaching them and the players have to listen. I am willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to make that happen.''

After a bad loss, and I think the TAMU game qualifies as a bad loss more so than the UH game, this is Leach's attempt to get the attention of his team and staff.  I think a coach gets one or two bites at the apple each year to motivate his team in some form or fashion and this is Leach's bite at the apple.  Leach wasn't happy after the game on Saturday and he's not happy now.  I would imagine that he doesn't want a happy or content team for the remainder of the week.

Yes, the quote is humorous and it's entertaining, but I'm focusing on the the last two lines:

"As coaches we have to solve our failure on reaching them and the players have to listen. I am willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to make that happen."

I don't know if there's a disconnect, and I would expect that Leach would say that after getting their tails handed to them last week, that there is a disconnect from what the staff is discussing to what happens on the field, but I'm more interested as to what Leach is going to do to further get the attention of his team.

There's plenty of voices here on DTN and I'm sure we'll find some that are offended by Leach's quotes about the girlfriends or women in general, but since my Mom called and broke the news to me last night and she thought it was funny (background, my Mom is not what you would call football savvy), then I think I get a pass if I get a kick out of it as well.

Never a dull moment.

From a motivation standpoint, I'm focusing on these last two lines and I hope like hell that this serves notice to the rest of the team that listening to those who tell you how great they, are perhaps now listening to the staff about what they need to do to win.

Video after the jump.

I'm sick of the annual bad loss

It has happened every year, I count the Cotton Bowl last year. Maybe Coach should go back to that sports academy and get a Ph. D. He wanted a big money contract so he needs to be a big time leader. This speech about fat gfs should have been given BEFORE
the loss. But I’m not bitter:)

I heard KRLD as it migrated from news to their mid-day talk format. They’re trying real hard to make something out of this. I have a failry low tolerance for talk radio because it can be so obvious when the commentators are trying to give a story legs even though their heart isn’t in it. I guess I don’t like hearing a commentator sell a little bit of his soul to fill more air.

Offensive?

Am I the only one who is confused that this is controversial? Coaches say incendiary things to their players. That’s how this works.

I don't understand Leach labeling their girlfriends "fat"

He has been able to verify that every player on the team that does, infact, have a girlfriend has a FAT girlfriend at that? Even if he did, why take a shot at fat girls? He should be telling the team that they played like a bunch of out-of-class fat-asses against A&M. I guess he was just trying to make it personal with them by using something totally unrelated to football. I dunno, to me it seems like a tad much. Am I alone here?

“out-of-class” should say “out of shape”

by techtom4 on Oct 27, 2009 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The step I'm missing...

is why fat is any more or less incendiary than simply calling out a player’s girlfriend. This strikes me as typical coach-attacks-players, and fat girlfriends are as arbitrary as headline readers. It’s just the kind of typical thing that is designed to get under a player’s skin. That’s why I don’t see the story here independent the fact that Leach is more creative in his player-shit talk than the rest of CFB. Or maybe not? Dr. Saturday alleged that the fat girlfriend remark was an ode to Bear Bryant. I dunno.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Headlinin-Pac-10-jumps-on-the-suspension-bandw?urn=ncaaf,198442#remaining-content

I just don’t see the controversy. He called his players’ girlfriends fat. If he’d said “stupid girlfriends” we wouldn’t be close to having this conversation… are fat people a more disadvantaged class than stupid people? Is either more or less arbitrary than the other, given the context? My worry is that this is becoming something about social commentary on obesity in America, which would be to say this is becoming something I find silly.

Go register. Or else.

The way he used the word "fat"

was in a derogatorry manner. He called them fat to get a certain reaction. How would just calling them out regardless of their perceived “fatness” not have been better? Just saying their that the players were “listening to their girlfriends” too much would have been a much better, less mean-spirited thing to say. I think “stupid” would have been just as bad. That part of the quote was pointless and did not pertain to football, Texas Tech, 52-30, or Texas A&M at all.

by techtom4 on Oct 27, 2009 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, the word “fat” has an inherently negative connotation. If there was no difference between the two phrases we are debating, there would be no controversy.

by techtom4 on Oct 27, 2009 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry for all the replies

I keep thinking of more things to say.

is why fat is any more or less incendiary than simply calling out a player’s girlfriend.

Seriously? Are you saying that he could’ve labeled the girlfriends as anything from dumb, slutty, ugly, weird, trashy, or any other term and it would be the same exact same thing as simply acknowledging that they are someone’s girlfriend and that the player listens to said girlfriend too much?

are fat people a more disadvantaged class than stupid people?

What planet did you grow up on? This entire conversation is proof that fat people are more disadvantaged than other people. They are constantly getting made fun of! As far as stupid people, I’m not sure what degree of stupidity you mean. If someone is regarded as so “stupid” that they cannot perform day-to-day tasks, then yes, they are at a disadvantage as well.

I just don’t see the controversy. He called his players’ girlfriends fat.

That’s the controversy…Along with the fact that any one person—-fat or not—- that doesn’t play football for Texas Tech had zero influence on the outcome of the A&M game, yet they are still being called out by the head coach, for reasons unbeknownst to me.

Re:
Seriously?

I am almost always serious, and unless my post indicates otherwise, it’s probably a good bet to assume that I am being serious. I apologize if that did not come across in my post, but henceforth just operate on the assumption that I am a serious person.

What I was asking, and what I am proposing, is that calling a players’ girlfriends fat is no more or less incendiary than the thousands of cruel things coaches say to and about their players on a day-to-day basis. Mark Mangino calling a player a fucking hot dog is as arbitrary as Mike Leach calling his players’ girlfriends fat. It does not strike me as outside the boundaries of what coaches can or do say to their players. I am simply baffled why this “fat” issue is important to anyone. Had he called the girlfriends stupid, I doubt anyone would even care.

What planet did you grow up on?

I grew up on planet earth, with you. You know that. But for the rest of this conversation, just assume that I grew up on the same planet as you. DO NOT FUCKING ASK ME RHETORICAL QUESTIONS THAT YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO. It is annoying. If you think I’m so fucking stupid, that my answers indicate a level of cluelessness that suggests I’m from another planet, then stick to the content of what I say rather than trying to garner points from the peanut gallery with “Are you stupid?” questions. If you’re so right about how dumb I am, or how useless the content of my post is, then you should have an easy enough time demonstrating that without asking me where I’m from. I haven’t asked you if you’re stupid. You can disagree with what I have to say without intimating that I am not morally serious, or that I’m from Jupiter.

Now, back to the discussion: If Mike Leach had called the girlfriends retarded, this would be a far, far more serious issue. For the reason that retarded people really are a more disadvantaged class than fat people. In any event, I don’t think fat people are a disadvantaged class. That’s why I find nothing controversial about Leach’s comments. You obviously disagree, so we can move on to the part where we agree to disagree.

In defense of my views, I am not a PC warrior. I do not live in a world where I am constantly attempting to expand the class of disadvantaged people. A coach makes a comment to motivate his players, and uses fatness as a cheap shot to hit them where it hurts. I do not take this as a key opportunity to defend the rights of fat people (do people have rights in virtue of their weight? That would be novel). I am a bit taken aback by your response, which is precisely why I asked the original question. I had no idea that there were enough people championing the rights of fat people that one would happen to frequent the same blog I am at. I appreciate you educating me to a class of people I was not aware of. I fear, however, that your strong feelings about the moral dignity of fat people and my great apathy about their plight will make common ground difficult to come by.

Along with the fact that any one person—-fat or not—- that doesn’t play football for Texas Tech had zero influence on the outcome of the A&M game, yet they are still being called out by the head coach, for reasons unbeknownst to me.

Leach’s position, stated explicitly just about every week, is that people who do not play football have a huge impact on the way his players play football. When he refers to “newspaper clippings” he is not talking about things the coaches or players write. Leach, along with every coach I’m aware of in the NCAA, feels that “distractions” outside of football impact the way 18-22 year old boys player football. This is hardly a controversial position.

Also, I am pretty sure some people, a few of them fat, did have an influence on the outcome of the Texas A&M game who also happened to not be members of the Texas Tech football team. This is not a riddle.

Time for a chill pill

Didn’t you write that post about being nice to each other just a couple days ago? Is this what you meant?

P.S. I actually agree with your original position.

by TechFirst on Oct 28, 2009 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought it was a nice enough post.

I’ve got only a tiny bit of patience for being accused of idiocy, which I find to be a pretty “mean” way to interact. I reread my post, which I think is certainly curt, but I don’t think it fell into the “mean” category, as I called techtom no names. I suppose people aren’t used to reading f-bombs dropped frequently, but that’s just how I talk.

To techtom and others: If my post above comes across as overwhelmingly mean or hurtful, it was not intended to and I apologize. If I state that I’m from earth in a way that strikes someone as offensive, I am sincerely just trying to get the point across: I am not from Jupiter. I am genuinely annoyed by questions like “Really?” or “Seriously?” or “What planet are you from?” or “Do you believe that?” or “Are you stupid?” all of which convey the same point; that something the other person has said is remarkably beyond the bounds of reason.

Having said all that, if others think the post is out of bounds, I will cheerfully withdraw it with an apologize extended to techtom. I’m not the authority on what is permissible content on this website and admit that I am as capable as anyone of crossing the line between what is mean and not mean.

by kayakyakr on Oct 28, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry if I came off as sarcastic and rude

When I said “Seriously” in one of the posts, it was more a reaction of surprise than it was an attempt to upset you. I can promise you that I don’t think you’re stupid, but rather very intelligent…any time that you have commented on something I go ahead and read it because I know it will be a good piece of writing with great humor thrown in most of the time (especially when Beergut is involved) and it will be phrased in a very scholarly manner. It looks like I am pissing a lot of people off with my position, which I will admit is a bit upsetting to me, but it looks like the best thing for me and everyone else to do would be just to move past this quote. Nothing will change the fact that Leach said it now, and I still love him and want him to be our head coach for as long as humanly possible. The only thing we can really do is hope our team shows up and woops Kansas next week…which should cure everything (Man, who knew a loss to A&M could cause all this?? :) ) .

Stroke of genius?

Coach is probably just coming up with this stuff off the top of his head. But is it possible that this is a tactical move?

Indulge me for a moment. Coach talks about fat little girlfriends. Players typically hang out together outside of football so it’s natrual to think some of these girlfriends know each other. Girlfriends start talking amongst themselves and start to get PO’d even though he didn’t single anyone out. They start giving their boyfriends some crap about it. Then maybe they start telling them if they would play better and win, coach wouldn’t be talking about the girlfriends as a collective group. Now the players start to get PO’d and tranfer that frustration to the field.

Probably not the case. But it could happen. We may have all just been schooled by coach Leach again without even realizing it. Probably a stretch though.

or....

Leach getting personal like that and bringing their girlfriends into it could alienate the team from him and make them less motivated to play for him. After all, regardless of what fat girlfriends, media types, fans, or whoever else has to say, it us ultimately the players’ and coaches’ job to ignore it, so why take shots at someone other than said players? I think if he had said something different and mentioned fans instead of girlfriends a lot more of us would take offense to it then we are willing to admit. For instance, what if Leach had said, “They have been listening to the dumb fans around here that tell them how great they are.” Wouldn’t you be a bit put off by that?

I think what he's saying is

that he wouldn’t be offended either way because he (and I’m included) wasn’t offended. Leach also stated at some point of the press conference that he wished he had a dollar for every media member or fan that said that TT would beat TAMU by 100. It seems you are taking it quite literally and perhaps the idea that it’s a metaphor more than anything else (at least this is a possibility, but he may be speaking to actual fat girlfriends).

I don’t know about genius, and I am not one of he guys who knows about motivation. But I do think Mike Leach is able to do things that most of us cannot understand while it is happening. But mostly I think he is funny, wonderful sense of humor…and he uses it to his advantage.

He gives wonderful opportunities to media, who in turn, depending on the writer, takes it, develops a slant and feeds the flames of passion, guilibility, and energy of fans, who either react with yeas or nays in heated discussions on-line.

Also note that he is quietly working on the next game. What he gives the media in a presser is not necessarily what he gives his team in preparation for himself and coaches and game planning and implementation for the players. I will not be surprised if the next game, especially being at home, is a fun game for TTU fans.

We are still working on an offensive line even as we are in the heart of Big12 play….but most people are worried about defensive coordinator and qb…amazing.

by TallMike on Oct 27, 2009 9:06 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Leach's leadership style is pretty foreign to me

but I can’t argue with his results (most of the time). For example, his well-known “doghouse” policy is something I’d never use unless players were having real discipline problems, but it seems to work really well as a tool to get players to perform in practice at a higher level, and it speaks to how much players on this team want to please the HMFPIC (it means what you think it means).

He’s never been shy about delivering something other than coach-speak at press conferences after tough losses, and I wouldn’t overanalyze his words. The beauty of Leach’s genius, if you insist on calling it that, is that he is usually operating on a simple principle or truth. In this particular case the truth is “This team isn’t good enough to win games just by showing up, and I am going to make sure they all know that”

by mojavereject on Oct 27, 2009 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly Tallmike

Offensive line is now set to start its 8th different rotation. There is no doubt if Potts doesn’t get flushed out and slapped in the face 3 x times in the first quarter – when he threw his first interception it’s a 21 – 7 score not 14- 14. A far more telling statistic in this topsy turvy season is the negative rushing yard displayed by T. Potts. In fact all the QB’s. Look at Taylors 20+ rushes (read scrambles and sacks allowed) for a negative 138 yards. Pheww! It’s a bit of a letdown that folks are getting their hands on the Tech QB. At the UH game? They did it to us right at the start of the game. NM 5 x sacks allowed result Potts injured , Nebraska whacked Sheffield around now he’s injured. Pretty basic requirement in the Leach offense to keep the QB upright. Anyone notice the Tech running games is dead last in the Big 12 ? Perhaps blocking equal yards? What a concept.

Leach In The News

I live in Tulsa & the CBS affiliate played his excerpt at the end of the news last night. Mojave reject is right about Leach’s style of mgmt is weird- just wish he’d get more pissed off & show some passion.

The O line must protect our QB or our system doesn’t work! We must also get back to a running game, which in ’08, helped secure that 11 win season.

We must kill the run this weekend & cover the deep ball thrown to either Briscoe/Meier.

Solid D like we did vs KSU/NU, good special teams, & pass blocking- we win.

That simple—- Let’s go!

Very cliche

This is typically Leach though! He will lose one game that he shouldn’t jeopardize the chances of his team making it to the next level and then blame it on the players and coaches. Well why didn’t he get a real DC, did he seriously not know this could well happen? Why did he not realize that Potts was not the right QB for a div 1 school. The players perhaps listened to their little fat girlfriends because their big fat coach was probably busy with his agent trying to shop for a job in another school trying to cash in on whatever success he has had so far this season (which is very little).

ITS AN ANALOGY

FAT LITTLE GIRLFRIEND = MEDIA,HYPE,FANS,ETC. He is basically saying that the players were listening to the wrong peope with the wrong perspective as to how good they really are.

For example if your fat little girlfriend told you that you were hot you should take it with a grain of salt because you have a fat girlfriend. If you in fact were hot you would have a hot girlfriend. The hot girlfriend is a BIG 12 title and thus far we as a university are dating the the B team but we did get a little had action with the team last year. We also usually get to hook up with the a team when she’s drunk from time to time.

I’m definetly adding the dont listen to your fat girlfriend line when refering to ego from now on!!!! Its golden

Or at least thats what I take from it.

Finally someone caught on to the metaphor. Thank you! But we will still hear someone offended saying that overeating is a disease and should be taken seriously. That will lead into getting lectured on the dangers of bulimia. Then we’ll have to see that god-awful picture of Karen Carpenter.

Keeping up with all the other analogies, Tech did not realize they were supposed to be on the field at 6 p.m. Saturday night. They were in the shower while a bunch of hungry aggies came barrelling in. Startled by the noise, the soap slipped out of Tech’s hand. In slow motion, we could all see it as it bounced to the cold tile floor. Without thinking, Tech bends over to pick it up. The next thing we know, it’s 52-30. Too bad Mike Leach’s speechwriter couldn’t work in some soap-on-a-roap comment.

Um yeah thanks for stating that. That’s was my 1st reaction as well. The team has been listening to everyone, from the media to fans to yes possibly girlfriends and family, that is not involved in Tech football who were just talking them up last week and not actually out on the field putting in the work.

Obviously fat little girlfriend is a metaphor

The problem is that Leach choose a metaphor that seems fairly misogynist. The first time he said fat little girlfriends it can be blown off, but repeatedly using the term, especially with his tone of voice and demeanor takes it to bad places (that is demeanor is the result of an embarrassing loss doesn’t make it better or excuse it).

Sports already contains enough misogyny without having a head coach go out of his way to create more. There are also way too many female fans to allow a university blow off comments like that made by a head coach at a press conference. It’s gone national and Tech will not look good if it doesn’t respond.

I don’t think Leach should be suspended or reprimanded. That seems way out of line for this comment. RaiderChick06, posting right above you, didn’t have a problem with the comment, not that she’s entirely representative of the female population, but I really do not think that a response is even remotely necessary.

More like a jilted lover

just based on the incessant whining ever since. Or maybe it was the repeated premature ejaculate from the stands that pissed her off so much.

did you just say that?!

I think this is GOLD

It certainly doesn’t make up for the loss…..but I would rather my coach seem out of his mind pissed than like Wade Phillips and make excuses. I can’t stand generic coach speak, and I guess being a Tech fan I have died and gone to heaven. Its a friggin’ analogy about listening to the wrong people and not wanting it as much as ATM. Yes, he and the staff are to blame a great deal….but the last little statement about going to great lengths to correct this is what I want to hear.
I admit that I am 100% in Leach’s camp and would give him a lifelong contract if it were my decision. It would take a lot of Zantac for the ups and downs…but with Mike, the Texas Tech Football program matters on a NATIONAL LEVEL. We aren’t perfect, but we are a significant player now.

Agreed...

mostly. I’m not certain that Tech is a national competitor, but I’m certain Leach has contributed to make my alma mater a more rich environment. He’s been a blessing to Tech and given this alum great enjoyment.

I approve of Leach

and his comments. They’re funny. Also, I think the team all knows who he may be calling out…. maybe one of the guys has an annoying, out-in-front girlfriend? I dunno….just sayin’.

I love it.

This line of commentary is cracking me up. Great analysis by adubb05 in using this as an analogy. Dead on in terms of using this with the fella’s when someone’s ego is out of control.

The interesting thing is Leach’s comments have somehow diverted the conversation from how poorly we played and this bad loss to his post game comments. Brian Billick used to do this stuff all the time. He’d make outlandish comments to get the media focused on him and it would free up the team to focus on preparing for their next game.

Not sure if that is what is happening here but it sure is fun to discuss…

The Potts discussion did kinda ease off, didn’t it? Along with the dreaded thoughts of 7-5.

Point

pcrawttu said “Finally someone caught on to the metaphor.” Well, he is right. This rant has nothing to do with any one type or gender of person. It has to do with listening to all be hullabaloo and praises for doing so well the previous two games and deciding to just walk into the Jones and get another win over the Aggies. Also, I think with the opening of the new seats that the players were probably caught off-guard, thinking they were in enemy territory, as they simply did not recognize their own football stadium. They are so used to going out of town and losing that they did just that. The trouble is, THEY WERE HOME! FOOLS! When growing up into manhood, when I was in competition to perform, I tried my BEST to do so. If it was not good enough, at least I put forth my best effort. That is all Leach wants from these players. We have all said it numerous time: Play every game like it is the most important game of the day, no other exists. Or as the old and worn out saying goes: BRING IT! Tech did not bring it. I felt before the season started that Tech could run the table because the schedule was set up just well enough for them to do it, even with UT moved up to the 3rd game. See, it does not matter when you play “Big” games, or those you perceive to be “Big”. ALL OF THEM ARE BIG. From the North Dakotas to the UTs, or A&Ms. They all should be not only taken seriously, but singularly. Ask every player if he lets up when playing any type game with a brother, father, sister or cousin. “Of course not. That’s my brother (etc.)” is what they would say. Well, this is the same thing. YOU HAVE TO WANT TO WIN EVERY TIME, BUT YOU NEED TO PLAY TO WIN!
Hmmmmm, isn’t that what Leach just said.

Well said Pilk645

That is what I can’t get past on this one. You would expect that the seniors on this team (and the juniors for that matter) realize they only have so many opportunities left to play a game. I know given that circumstance, I’d be damned if I would let anyone take the day off or the game off.
So that is what I can’t quite understand. How is it that B. Carter et al wasn’t up in everyone’s ass to get them going all week long? I know they said they had a good week of practice. My only conclusion is that it isn’t as easy as just flipping the switch once the ball is kicked.
Really looking forward to seeing how they respond.

Dumb and Dumber

One of the stupidest movies ever made. So much so, I have not even bothered to watch it….ever. JMO.

I must admit

there are a few good quotes from it, but definitely not worth watching more than once.

We may be over analyzing this statement

This may be as simple as Coach Leach being tired of players on his team appearing in public with fat chicks. Maybe he wants them to do a better job representing the program.

And for those keeping score at home, no, I’m not being serious.
