New member!......Leach
Hello everyone, new member here, first post, been reading for awhile and loving it.
Took my 2 yr old to his first Tech game on Sat., it was special despite the obvious outcome. My thoughts on leach's comments:
Leach is a winner. He is shaping college football and bringing recruits and press to the school in increasing droves. For many of us his latest rant is less offensive, and more comforting than anything. Afterall, this rant represents the closest thing to Leach getting angry with his players and staff (however awkwardly it manifests itself), and it proves he cares and can bring the firebrand.
All that said, this is coaches record since 39-33 over UT:
1). Lost the next 2 of 3 including bowl game to inferior opponent
2). Publicly shopped his wares to every school in the country, and after no offers, pledged his loyalty to TTU.
3). Made embarrassing and sensless remarks about A&Ms QB entering the draft for seemingly no reason, and added to our embarrasment after this wekends loss
4). Downplayed the loss of #6 and #5, and promised to plug and play , and keep trucking with Potts and the Dropsie Company.
5). Proceeds to lose 3 games placing Tech as the 6th best team in the state, not in conference, and we have a few to go.
6). Was at the center of what but all indications was a small revolt after UH. (Twitter)
7). Holds another embarrassing press conf. that regardless of it's merits, is attracting the ire of the press and women accros the nation, many of whom have bluechip sons who are considering schools to play ball for.
I love Leach guys, I do. But I love the Leach that worked his butt off the last 8 years or so to put last years team together, and earn that contract. I am dissapointed but the coach he has become since. Mike: Shut your mouth, put down Texas Monthly, cancel your interviews, and coach this team. The team that we expect to be taking us to the next level and possible BCS in 2010 is in shambles, and your publicly making Mike Gundy's "I'm a man!" epsiode look tame. If we as fans want to avoid taking what appears to be a huge step backward in time, we need to quit making excuses, and expect more from this team,it's coach, and it's staff.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

man for your first post....
I would say you and I are going to get along great. My sentiments exactly. All this cute rhetoric from the press conference is funny once. Get your coaches and players in line and start acting like a football team. I’m am a huge Leach supporter but I must admit as of late I have been disappointed. It’s not just losing games but the whole attitude and lack of motivation. Last season we had some really special players that wanted to win and played every game. Even when Tech won by a close margin it wasn’t good enough and the players/coaches knew it. This season – not so much.

I couldn't agree with you more
and would also add that I think all these post-game quotes are just used to take people’s mind off the horrible performance of his team last game and to remind them how “funny” and “witty” he is and why we all love him so much. Stop blaming everyone but yourself coach. I’m pretty sure it’s your fault. After 10 seasons at Tech, the consistent false-starts, delays of game, playing down to the competition, overall lack of discipline and other minute, extremely fixable penalties, have continued to slow us down, and that reflects more on your inability to teach the concept of accountability than it does on what “fat girlfriends” have to do with anything related to football. If you have a spoiled, bratty kid, how do you think they got that way? Because the parent isn’t rasing/teaching them properly. Well, I’m pretty sure our football team is considered a family by it’s members and fans, making Leach the dad. Time to man up and be a dad, buddy.

The first thing that he said was that it was
the staff’s fault. He blamed the coaching staff a number of times both Saturday. I think he is referring to himself. Go read the press notes and he says very plainly in the 4th paragraph (http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/text/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/leach-am.pdf) that the coaching staff is the first to blame, which obviously includes Leach.
I understand that Leach may not be your favorite person, but he did everything that you asked in your comment. I mentioned in your FanPost that Leach doesn’t consider penalties to be such a bad thing and is a sign of his team being aggressive. It’s been his attitude for quite some time.
Go Raiders . . .

I guess the thing is
if he’s gonna blame the staff then why bring up the team’s girlfriends at all? I know he blames himself sometimes, but it seems like the majority of the time he is not afraid to attack players in a somewhat unforgiving manner. Now, that is not a bad thing. I actually love that about him, because I like coaches that practice tough love on their players. In this instance though, I didn’t see how bringing up something personal would in any way be productive. Also, I may be disappointed in him right now, but he actually is one of my favorite people, and I would trade him for any other coach in the nation…that doesn’t mean that I always agree with him though. As far as penalties being a sign of aggression… I guess sometimes that makes sense, but when your team consistenly has false starts and delay of game penalties that end up costing potential points, it seems like more of a lack of discipline than a drive of aggression.
On a side note, it appears as though I am annoying quite a few people with my statements, so I guess it would just be best for me and everyone else to move past these quotes. Nothing we can say can change the fact the Leach said them anyway, and winning against Kansas will cure everything…at least temporarily.

I’m not sure you’ve quite understood the metaphor yet.
by kayakyakr on Oct 29, 2009 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No I get it.
“Fat little girlfriends” is basically symbolic of hype generated by media and other outside influences. I just don’t think Leach is a metaphor-type guy. He is gonna say what he means directly.
by techtom4 on Oct 29, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So, he’s shown that he can use comparisons… I’m not really sure how anyone could really think that he was actually directly referring to someone’s fat girlfriend….
by kayakyakr on Oct 29, 2009 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But at least in the Ham and Eggs comparison he labeled exactly who he was refferring to in each instance. That is where confusion could arise, I think. He made no effort to label exactly who the fat little girlfriends were, so for all we know he means what he says and is trying to upset his players.

My biggest issue so far this season is Leach always blaming the players publicly for the losses. Man up, be the coach, and take full responsibility…quit trying to be cute all the time. I think in his twisted mind he is trying to take responsibility, but it sure comes out funny.

There's alot of room between
Bill Parcels and Wade Phillips. Wade kisses his players’s asses at pressers, The Tuna calls a spade a spade. I’m old school and would chew their asses, but not publicly, but that’s just me. We had the exact same kids out there we had at NU. IMO, the gameplan was either not tailored to this opponent, or something. Either way, it all starts at the top. That’s why CEOs make so much. Now the crap has to roll downhill to remedy the situation. But nice stat new guy, look at our last 11 we are like 6-5 and that’s counting the pre conference patsies. We’re looking alot like an also ran.

I'm your first disagreement....welcome
This is what you get with Leach. Women believe they can change men and marry them based on that. We are married to Leach, and this is what he is. Either enjoy it or not, but just like Bobby wouldn’t change neither will Mike. I began at Tech in 83 and we were not even a blip on the football scene nationally….barely in the SWC.
We matter now, and we do have our issues that I wish Mike could clean up (penalties, etc)…..but how he handles himself with the press is golden.
You break down his record after the UT game….you can not clear away what was accomplished prior to that.
We aren’t recruiting like ATM and the top teams of the big 12 yet….Mike just does a better job of getting the most out of players that he knows fit his system. I know you are not calling for his head, but don’t expect any big changes from Mike…I think you have to make peace with it. I am not content, but I think we will build our program’s importance with every year that Mike is here.
WELCOME TO DTN….

+1
I too think Leach’s personality just comes along with the package. If you want a coach that screams and gets mad and makes a scene after a game to fire up players… thats just not Mike. Leach has his pitfalls and occasional bad losses, but he gets more performance out of lesser players than any coach in the nation and the players he recruits are getting better. We obviously still have a way to go, but we have faced more adversity in this season than any in recent memory. With our revolving door o-line we have been forced to use 3 quarterbacks now, how comfortable did we get in the past? Since Kliff Kingsbury we have not had any serious injury put us in this position (although BJ played with a busted knee for half a season). I think its more a product of injury than anything else, and we aren’t the only ones with these pains (see OU).
TTUMAR welcome to DTN! Wreck ’em!

He isn't gonna change
But the point about making “blue chip players” mothers angry could be valid.
Was listening to Craig W in Austin this afternoon. He claims he “heard from a mother of a blue chip and she said she would never let her son consider Tech b/c of coach Leach and his attitude toward women”.
Who knows if this is true. Might be she said this. Might be piling on b/c her son wasn’t going to consider Tech anyway. But it does possible add validity to what our new friend is posting here.
by imisswesttexas on Oct 27, 2009 5:17 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I guess that could be true (a player not coming to Tech because of the views of women by the coach). I SERIOUSLY doubt it, though. These are football coaches. They aren’t all goons, but they certainly aren’t exactly bastions women’s right’s either.
I promise you if it comes down to paying his own way or scholarship offer, a kid and his mom will look past a silly comment or two.

Or could be propaganda
Consider the location of the source and, I’m guessing, lack of the “blue chipper” or his mother’s name mentioned in the story.

People are way too serious
This man is the father of three daughters, one of which is attending medical school. I don’t believe he is instilling a “fat girlfriend”, barefoot and pregnant mentality in his girls or in his son. Coach has spoke about women in many other instances, including an entertaining bit on dating advice. I have never construed any of his comments as overly sexist.
Will some coaches try to use this to their advantage in the recruiting game? Probably. Will it work? Not with recruits who are seriously considering us and possess the desired personality/character traits.
I do not believe this was an off-the-cuff remark; it was targeted at a specific situation that arose in the days prior to the game. And who knows . . . maybe she was fat. Or maybe he just wanted to divert some attention from the loss. Anything is possible with Leach.

Is a spare and tech can win without beating ut and ATM in recruiting…don’t fall in the trap. We are picking up recruits we couldn’t 10 years ago, and this entertaining comment won’t factor one iota.

T'92, TSRulz, CRV & OldSchool - Agree completely
Frankly I think the whole this was made up in his mind. Like I said, even if it’s true you never know if this supposed “blue chip” was even considering Tech. Craig W is a tool anyway and has an obvious bias toward UT. So we’re not exactly getting a neutral commentary.
Interesting enough, his producer chimed in and said he really, really hopes coach Leach stays at Tech for a long, long time. And that he loved the fact that you get interesting commentary and not just coach speak from Leach.
Like I said originally, he ain’t gonna change. Much made over nothing if you ask me…

There's no way!
We all know a ‘blue chip player’ would never be considering Tech anyways so that point is completely irrelevant to us. We like our 2 or 3 three star guys way too much for that. :)

I gotta disagree
TTUMAR talks about his love for the captain, then proceeds to show how much love he really has with several points I disagree with. Do you really consider ole miss inferior, I would (as did Las Vegas) consider them fairly even? What coach wouldn’t shop his wares as his contract is running out and the school drags negotitions? And last of my counter points, I thought the captain handled the small revolt very well! Anyway, welcome aboard and maybe we can all agree (though it dosen’t hurt to disagree) after we kick Kansas this Sat.

Bro, can we see how things go in Lubbock this weekend...
Before you make your hotel accomodations in Stillwater? No offense, but beating OSU in Stillwater is right up there next to beating TCU anywhere for me.
Now I’m not saying you are bad luck (0-3), but please consider taking a different car, driving a different route, change hats if you had one, don’t even bring any of the Tech shirts you took on previous trips and change up the pre-game food and beverage. If you do all of these, surely one of tthem will work toward helping the cause for victory. :-)

But the in laws are OSU Aggies. They come to Lubbock every other year and we vice versa. If you think getting a hotel in Lubbock is challenging….We just stay with the Grand-in-laws in Tulsa.

I use to wonder
how it was that the Israeli’s complained about manna from heaven while wandering in the desert. I mean come on, a pillar of fire to lead you, free food, the promise land just around to corner. The first little hiccup and damn if they don’t build a golden long horn calf to worship….. BAM the next thing you know they have 40 years more to wander.
Then I joined Double T Nation and it all became clear.

Funny thing however,
Moses never actually got to go INTO the promised land. They went into it without him per God’s orders. So does that mean someone else gets to take us over the hill into The Land of Canaan. And they accuse we Catholics of not reading our Bible:)

Little Fat Israelit Girlfriends were complaining and
desiring water. The entire time, they had asked and God had given. God gave Moses the power to bring food from nothing and water out of a rock. God had been faithful to them yet they continued to fall away, complain, worship idols and post nasty things on TT nation. Pushing Moses’ patience, he put on his head set and looked to the press box to have a word with God; who told him to go speak to a rock and it would bring forth water. Now the fat chicks were really pushing his buttons so he struck the rock twice and brought forth water. HE then said if they wanted water, HE would give them water. In a moment of anger, he disobeyed God buy striking the rock and took the credit for his own. This is why he was not allowed entry into the Holy Land.
That Old Testament God , didn’t even cut Moses a little slack.
He would fit right in with some of our TT nation brothers.
This is my last Bible analogy.

Welcome to the fray, TTUMAR
As you can see, we are all super fans of Red Raiderland, USA. We all offer our input, knowing another may disagree, but will also discuss it on an even keel. Those that cannot be somewhat congenial will probably go away at some time. But those of us who are true Texas Tech fans will stay and happily argue our points. We do talk about games kids play, and hopefully we treat everyone with respect. Now, the thing about the “fat girlfriends”. It was not directed at fat girlfriends as such, but those, anyone, who bend the ears of the players so much that they do not hear the coaches clearly. When it happens to a whole team, embarrassments like ATM happen. The good captain has it well in hand and is leading this team as well as he can. They being youngsters are going to make that difficult at times and, thus, we may lose. But Capt’n Leach will right his ship and all will be good.

"Fat Girlfriends" is his best quote ever!
and there are some classic ones in contention. Have to disagree about the “ire” of recruits and their parents. The press, yes, but they just want a controversy to talk about and get eyeballs. Here’s a good response:
“Barbara Crousen, men’s and women’s track and field coach at McMurry and the school’s senior women’s administrator, was not offended.
"I’m a woman, you know, but if (coaches) get questioned on everything we say because we’re upset because we lost a game … I think it’s silly for anybody to make anything out of it," she said. "Just go on about your rat-killing and don’t listen to your fat little girlfriend."
Crousen should be Leach’s assistant! Go hire this gal Myers

Maybe there’s a method to Leach’s madness…maybe he wants to have something for the media (his comments) to focus on other than one of the worst losses in his tenure, given the opponent, and the fact that we are back to mediocre 7 win football for this year.

I know TTech is not where we all want the program to be but I still contend that @ the time the Capt. was the best choice for TTech football. I think he brings a system that has changed Big 12 O and has even influenced High School football here in little Mississippi. Sure it has been an up and down season but I’ve been a Red Raider all my life(since 1959, family thing) and TTech has never had this much consistant success in football. Again do I want to be a “Rock Star Program” absolutely but if you look @ the top 10 who do you see…. the same old teams. They just have advantages and it takes time to overcome those. I also contend that most of the D1 schools would love to be where we are….Wreck’Em Tech

So what have you done for me lately?
Obviously, I have a little different perspective…
1) "Inferior" is definitely debatable…. That "inferior" team had just recently beaten the eventual BCS champion on their home field. The other loss was to a team that came up a little short in the BCS title game.
2) I was disgusted by this whole process… But even as you say, at the end, he re-committed to Tech. Some will always resent this and will bring it back up whenever there’s an opportunity to complain. As far as I’m concerned, it’s settled and we’re moving forward.
3) I wasn’t in the least bit embarrassed by those remarks. In fact, I agree with his sentiments. I also think the remarks were made for a very specific reason – one can disagree with the reason, but he definitely had one… And I really don’t think those comments added any additional embarrassment to last week’s loss.
4) Not sure what we’re talking about with #25… I didn’t ever hear Leach promising to "plug and play" and "keep trucking"… I did hear him consistently express confidence in the players who are here and who are going to play… I don’t mind that at all… I don’t think I’ve ever heard of our receiving corps referred to as "the Dropsie Company" anywhere before… I have to say I respectfully disagree with that characterization…. OK, not so respectfully…
5) I’m not happy about the losses, as I assume no one on the team is… I just hope they all have a more positive attitude about it than you portray…
6) The press and Leach-opponents tried to create it into some kind of crisis, but in the end it was just an enactment of a completely reasonable and appropriate team rule…Too bad it wasn’t done earlier or under different circumstances…
7) I’m still not embarrassed… Again, another opportunity for the press and opponents, but I seriously doubt it has any effect on our recruiting… Let’s wait and see…
