Texas Tech uses late defense and rushing to defeat Kansas 42 - 21
Baron Batch takes over the game to close it out, good rebound after Texas A&M and a good game going into our bye week.

This W feels good
This feels good. I am also happy for Potts. Now in about two weeks we will hopefully have Sticks back for the big upset in Stillwater.

Tech wins with defense, special teams and running the ball.
I can’t remember the last time that has been the case.

Very good performance by the D
LBs filled holes well. D line got pressure….and the secondary created some coverage sacks.
On offense, Liked that we threw some deep balls. Potts wasn’t horible, but he wasn’t great either. At this point, I think its Sticks job if he is healthy in 2 weeks.
Love the fact that Baron took over towards the end of the game. Had flashbacks of Woods & Hendersen tearing up KU in recent years.
And special teams were pretty darn good. Punt and kick coverage were great, almost had a huge punt block and our return game was above average.
I am going to root for Ok State tonight and try and send B Carter some good mojo for his bum knee / leg. (we’ll worry about that later. enjoy the win)
The roller coaster season continues….

D played well in the fourth
it was pretty bad before that it looked like. But that was alot to do with coverage.

??????
What game were you watching?!?! The D shut them out on offensive TDs in the first half (their second TD was a fumble recovered on the 2… I don’t count that as credit toward their O). They only scored one other time. They are supposedly a similar offense to ours, high powered and lots of scoring. We took Meier completely out of the game… he’s their possession receiver and he had 0 catches in the first half. He’s also the one that fumbled once. Either way, our D played out of their shoes… definitely the Mr. Hyde to the Dr. Jekyll that showed up last week.

I think we’ve seen the best Potts can play. And like others said, it’s not horrible, but it’s not real good, either. Servicable is how I’d describe his play.
Tech is such a better offense when we try to run. Leach’s problem is that if the run doesn’t work well right away, he totally gets away from it for long stretches. Today, out of absolute necessity, he ran. And it should show him what everyone knows…he has some of the best RBs in the Big XII.

Leach’s problem is...
Hahaha!!!
Yes, we know. He’s not perfect. He’s human. He makes mistakes. He’s not the son of God.
He doesn’t even look like Jesus…

I'm sorry,
But weren’t you pointing out yet again something you don’t like about our Head Coach? It’s tiresome re-reading the same old worn out arguments you always make about Leach.
We get it. You don’t like him or his coaching style.
I was really hoping you’d give it a rest, especially after we won.
I'm not worthy. Really.

I haven’t said a lot about Leach this year…just pointing out something the rest of the world seems to see as well. Relax. It’s all okay.

It's analysis
Is it based on what one person’s view of this game and previous games was? Yes, but you’ve been on this forum long enough to know that this is a place to voice any number of opinions and, no matter how much you disagree, “give it a rest” is not a debate point. At least be constructive and provide a legitimate counterpoint.
And to think that a win is a reason not to provide critical analysis, that would to be the “fat little girlfriends” ourselves.
The facts that we were running all over Houston in the first half yet decided to go away from it in the 2nd, even with a lead, combined with the show that Batch put on tonight once he finally got the ball more in the 2nd half provide an opportunity to question the lack of running-play calling when we definitely have the personnel to execute a much better running game than has been attempted.
If you want to critique me for that horribly long run-on sentence, I would have no problem with that.

Here's some analysis for you
Leach likes to throw the ball…

I don’t think that Leach so much changes away from the run when it doesn’t work, I think that his playcalling just goes streaky. He’ll send in 4 runs in 6 plays and then will go a quarter without calling another run, no matter if those running plays are successful or not.

Is that Leach?
I thought it was the at the QB’s discretion.

yes...
the run game will open up more of the passing game and prove more difficult for opposing offenses to cover. The run game is the missing link and I think Leach may see that after this performance. Great job by the Tech defense. Absolutely amazing.

Yes
Let’s convince Mike Leach to change his offensive philosophy.
I’m sure if we complain about it long enough and bring it up enough times, he’ll get the message and realize the error of his ways.
After that, maybe we can change his mind about time of possession and going for it on forth down…
I'm not worthy. Really.
by Campeador on Nov 1, 2009 9:31 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
you don't have to...
change your offensive philosophy of passing by incorporating the run into the mix. The passing game will always be first and foremost but by adding a few run running plays you can evolve this offense into something better and catch opposing defenses off guard. I really don’t see anybody trying to get Leach to change but add more to the mix. Lastly, I think I saw Mike opt to punt in this game when he needed to.

Great GIFs
Great gifs thanks for posting them. Loved Tech’s running game today. We can easily become a very balanced offense with potent running and passing offense and this way we can keep our opponents guessing as today’s 4th quarter showed. Everyone here is right Potts is not terrible, but you can’t win a game with him as quarterback if you are just passing, we need to have a ground game if we have to play and win with Potts. Hopefully though Sticks will be back and we will have a big upset win in Stillwater. OkState is doing terrible today down 24-7 at half.

The Season in a capsule.....
Lots of highs and lows today and it seems like this year. The D played great all day. Kansas really had only on drive the D did really good. Created turnovers!!!! And I love Batch—he is the man!!!!! Hope SS is back and we “creme” osu(copycats)! Wreck’Em Tech

Partially
and their person on a horse, and their new “Orange Power” chant. They did the research on here sometime a while back and it showed that we had the original guns up and horseback “mascot”. Maybe not THE original, but before them anyhow.

Well guys, it was a weird game all around. The atmosphere around Lubbock was downright strange. No one seemed all that excited about the team or the game.
All things considered, glad we won and great job by the d and special teams. The halftime switch was completely unexpected. The crowd supported potthole but he still has the same issues. I thought Doege played relatively well and even though there were a lot of incomplete passes they were harmless for the most part (I.e. No interceptions).
There seemed to be a pattern of one first down and then we had to punt after three incomplete passes by Doege. He has potential but the Oline needs substantial improvement but I know everyone realizes that.
Headed to the depot district…wreck em.
One last thought, as much as I like it the pirate thing was pretty much overdone today by the fans. Oh well.

Were pathetic. No “power” response to “raider.”. No enthusiasm. Students were fining KU he’ll though. It’s so amazing how a crowd can mirror the mood of the team. Oh BTW

Running game...
Well, I said Leach wouldn’t turn to the running game but he did. Just shows what can happen we we use that element of the offense. Can’t wait for Sticks to get back on the field so we act like we know what we’re doing on offense. Aside from the abberation that was the A&M game, the D is played great. I feel we play that way on D against anyone with less than a stellar running game.

Who is this defense?
I want whatever Ruffin did last week to happen every week. Potts did great. . .its amazing what support from the crowd can do. Loved Jamar Wall’s hit. BOOM. Looks like they dumped their fat little girlfriends. Thank goodness.

Potts
Was the one who called the running plays, as per Barron Batch. While Potts may not be back completely from the hits he had taken, he was certainly able to know when to call for a running play, and it worked out very well. If you are going to give credit to anyone for calling more running plays, it should be Potts. He did a masterful job, even though it will not show up in the stats as his decision. But really, for this team, this win was a full team effort, even if the offense didn’t do much until after the half. I still think Doege will be a good QB, but everyone came together well as the game progressed. Now, a week off, and on the Stillwater.

I'm waiting to hear all of the praise...
Of Potts for checking to the run in the 2nd half….
Of Leach for allowing his quarterbacks to have that option….
