Post Game Thoughts :: New Mexico Lobos Edition
SBN Box Score :: TTU Box Score :: Post Game Quotes
The Result :: Interesting: There were so many stories within the story of the game yesterday. I found myself thinking about what I was going to write this morning a number of times. The quarterback play, the injuries, the crappy announcing team and referees, the lack of defensive effort, etc. Of course you'd prefer to have the word describing the result more something along the lines of "dominating" or "crushing", but that just wasn't the case.
But in a number of ways, you could consider a 49-28 win over New Mexico, after losing 4 players to injuries, not playing with 2 other starters because of injuries, and losing the turnover battle 5-2 is a bit of a surprise.
Texas Tech won, despite the turnovers and despite the injuries.
You take those situations and you've got a recipe for a really, really bad loss, but at the end of the day, Texas Tech was the superior team and although I'm probably going to catch a lot of flack for this, I think the same result would have happened whether it was Sheffield or Potts in at quarterback. New Mexico could only muster spurts of defensive line pressure and Texas Tech had just lost Byrnes, and earlier in the week, I thought I had read something to the effect of almost any player can get injured, but not Byrnes. Keown played better as the game progressed, but that hit on Potts is the reason why the center position is such a big deal.
The Storylines ::
Quarterback Play: As mentioned above, I think that QB Taylor Potts would have rallied. I know, there's a lot of people who think that Potts has been terrible all year. I just don't think that's true and it's an easy statement to make now, after throwing two interceptions, but let's just pull the reins a bit. The first interception, to Zouzalik, was one where either Potts or Zouzalik got the play wrong. You could see Potts looking towards Zouzalik and motioning that he was expecting Zouzalik inside rather than to make the cut outside. Mis-communication happens in football and no one knows, unless they called the play, what happened. The second interception was simply a beautiful play by NM's Nathan Enriquez. Potts had delivered the ball over the top between a cornerback and safety before and tried it again, this time, Enriquez made a great play. That's football.
At the end of the day, Potts still had a 9.34 yards per attempt average, which is just tremendous and he was getting the ball down the field. Of course, Potts' first pass play helps that average, but I thought Potts was making a concerted effort to get the ball down the field in the second quarter, and that's either one of two things happening. That's the coaching staff telling him that there's opportunity down the field or that's Potts taking the initiative. I've got no problem with either one and let's not forget that WR Edward Britton dropped a sure touchdown in the middle of the field. Even the crappy FSN broadcasters noticed that.
And Steven Sheffield was electric. Absolutely electric. There was a certain energy to him and his ability to avoid the rush when the offensive line struggled was nice. Leading his team to 4 straight touchdown drives was spectacular. Sheffield put the game away quickly and was reminiscent of Potts performance in the second half of the Rice game. There's a lot to like about Sheffield and he seems to be a confident and smart quarterback.
But Sheffield also struggled as well. I mentioned a few weeks ago that a quarterback doesn't want to throw an interception inside their own 20 yard line and inside the opponent 20 yard line. Sheffield's only interception of the day was into triple coverage and that ball just shouldn't have been thrown. As well as the offense had been playing, there was no reason to throw that ball and that pass turned into a quick 7 points for New Mexico and pumped life into a team that was getting their head handed to them in the second half. The very next drive, Sheffield is handed the ball at the Texas Tech 48 as the defense turned the ball over on downs and it was a quick 3 and out and then had 3 more drives where he couldn't score including a fumble. Not perfect quarterback play.
Even Sheffield was critical of his play (I love that he's this aware of his deficiencies and Potts acknowledges his deficiencies too):
I think what I did well is I started good. And I brought tempo to the offense. I got everybody excited to play. And, um, as far as my overall performance, I don't know. I'd give it a B, B- or something, because I did a lot of stupid things and I didn't need to do them. And I created my own pressure a few times. That fumble, not having two hands on the ball was just stupid. And, you know, we just stalled three drives in a row when we shouldn't have, you know. And we have more ability than that. And we can play better than that and we should have just scored on the drive like we did on the first three. It's something they am going to need to work on and, you know, it's -- even though, you know, like I said it's a lot like practice, when it comes to game time, I mean, like both my calfs right now have cramped and I don't know why. I mean, maybe I didn't drink enough water. That never happens before. Usually because I stand on the sideline. But I got to work on little things like that and not try to make too much happen and just make the routine play every time.
The quarterback controversy is something that every team faces.
The grass is always greener on the other side.
I have no idea what Leach & Co. are going to do, but what we do know about Leach is that he's not afraid to tell you like it is about the play of his team, especially quarterback play. Traditionally, Leach has stuck with the starter, even if it's Graham Harrell getting benched for a series or two in 2006. I think Leach prides himself on picking the best quarterback for his team and he saw something in Potts to believe that he's the guy from the start of the season. Thus far this season, Leach has been entirely supportive of Potts in just about every manner, even going so far as to praise Potts after the two losses the last 2 weeks.
I trust Leach's evaluation more than mine and I don't think that you can yo-yo quarterbacks. Once you find a guy, you've got to stick with him and I've never asked Leach that, but I think Leach feels the same way, although he's prone to talk about benching, he knows that the quarterback position is a maturation process.
I'll support any player that the staff believes can lead this team. Whether it be Potts or Sheffield, and as great as Sheffield was on Saturday afternoon, I don't think you're going to see a systematic dissection of a defense like Graham Harrell did in 2008 against teams like Kansas and Kansas St. This team is going to have to work for it, no matter who is at quarterback.
Injuries, Injuries, Injuries: Just a start: QB Taylor Potts, C Shawn Byrnes, FS Cody Davis, DE Daniel Howard and DB Nathan Stone. LAJ's Don Williams reported that Potts and Stone were admitted to the hospital last night. I'm throwing some good mojo the entire group's way and hope they all recover quickly. We're really not going to know the status of the injuries for the rest of the week and the worst part about all of this is that these injuries are at the worst positions. Losing Byrnes on an offensive line that's starting a two redshirt freshmen in LT Terry McDaniel and RG Mickey Okafor was really tough. Losing Davis at free safety when the starting strong safety was also already out with an injury. I though FS Brent Nickerson played much better in the second half, but I thought his first half was pretty bad and allowed way too many easy and open completions over the middle of the field. He did improve as the game continued. Losing Howard at defensive end, a position previously depleted with injuries. Howard has been the most consistent defensive end of the group, although I thought Brandon Sharpe eventually wore down the New Mexico defense and you like to see that. I think I'd still prefer to have Howard starting and his injury leaves this team awfully thin at this position. We've already talked about the loss of Potts. CB Nathan Stone is a special teams ace and I think the special teams needs all the help they can get right now.
Stopping Third and Fourth Downs: New Mexico was 6-20 on third downs and 3-6 on fourth downs. I found myself quite frustrated at the play of the defense on those critical downs. You can somewhat accept the 6-20 on third downs, but I thought early in the game, New Mexico was getting too many third down conversions, completing 5 of 11 in the first half and only 1 of 9 in the second. That seemed to keep the Lobos in the game, along with the turnovers. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I'm not entirely convinced that the lack of defensive pressure is all Ruffin McNeill. I think he and Leach work on a collective game-plan for the week, and if they both feel that the team can be conservative, then that's how they roll. It seems that the 61 yard touchdown pass late in the game (with only 0:46 left int he game) was the first time all year that the Texas Tech defense has been burned deep. That's by design, I'm almost certain of that. We'll talk about the defensive pressure, or lack thereof, in the next section, but this is a concern moving forward, especially if the two starters are out with injury.
Defensive Pressure: We've talked about the third down conversions, but the most glaring part about the defensive play was the fact that New Mexico, a team that was averaging 262 of total offense prior to yesterday, amassed 431 yards of total offense. I thought the defense was uninspired in the first half and it showed from the beginning. New Mexico's first drive was 10 plays for 47 yards and I think this set the tone. New Mexico missed a field goal on that drive, but there were wide gaps in the defensive line and there seemed to be little to no containment of the quarterback. I was fully expecting Colby Whitlock to dominate the middle, or at least draw a significant number of defenders to make it easier on the other defensive linemen and that just didn't happen.
New Mexico had 91 plays. That's right, 91 plays.
I understand the give, but don't break methodology of defense, but yesterday's performance was tough to watch.
But there were glimpses of good things on defense. S Will Ford is still a work in progress on pass coverage, but I thought that the 2 times that McNeill sent Ford on a safety blitz, they were successful. I'd like to see this a few more times and from some other positions.
There were a ton of reserves that got into the game, which I thought was good from a standpoint that this team is going to have to be deep, especially with all of the injuries.
DT Myles Wade might need to see more time with the regular unit. He may not be completely ready, but when he was in the game I tried to key on his play and he's disruptive. He is a wrecking ball of a player and there was one play where Wade drew a double-team and still helped make the tackle. Of course the announcing crew attributed the tackle to Adell Duckett (sarcasm). Not only that, you can see Wade's strength as he gets a good push against the offensive line.
Perhaps this is just me increasing expectations, but I'm expecting more out of the linebackers. I want and need to see those guys make more plays at or near the line of scrimmage, rather than down the field 5 or 6 yards.
Jeffers Has Attitude: Seemed like every time RB Harrison Jeffers touched the ball, he was looking for the endzone. Not only that, it seems as if he runs with a perpetual chip on his shoulder. Almost angry that he's not getting the ball. There's good and bad to that, but there's no denying that he's got talent. For the day, Jeffers finished with 8 rushes for 31 yards and 3 touchdowns, but also had 5 catches for 90 yards and another touchdown.
Receiving Concern: Already mentioned the Britton drop, and otherwise, he was quiet. That's the problem. Britton is supposed to be this team's deep threat and despite the fact that Britton has tremendous potential, he hasn't been able to put it all together. I also have this prevailing thought that as solid as Alexander Torres is, what he is not is a threat to get the ball down the field. I'm sure that the coaching staff doesn't need my help, but there's been something not right about the offense, but I haven't quite been able to put my finger on it.
It's a little bit the offensive line, it's a little bit the running backs, it's a little bit the quarterback and it's a little bit the receivers.
And it's not so much that the receivers are bad, but perhaps they're misplaced. As much complaining as fans do about the quarterback situation, I think there's some deserved criticism to the receivers as well. Britton hasn't played up to his potential, Torres cannot get the ball deep as the other outside receiving threat. Perhaps this team needs to make Tramain Swindall the primary option as he has the most big-play potential.
Locksley is Confused: So New Mexico wants to kick on-sides kick after on-sides kick, in the hopes of getting the score respectable, but then after the game he says this:
The smile was because they scored a touchdown with two seconds left. That means they’ve got a lot of respect for us, in my opinion. They had a chance to take a kneel and Mike’s (Leach) got to coach his team the way he coaches his team and I’ve got to coach mine but for them to score a touchdown there at the end, in my mind, it looks like he had a lot of respect for the Lobos and the fight we have.
Ummmm, no. Sorry Mike, that's just not the case. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Locksley wanted to score, despite Texas Tech was running out third-team reserves and then he wants to say that the reason Texas Tech scored is because Texas Tech has respect for New Mexico? I don't think so. Locksley is trying to put a good spin on things here and that's understandable, but if he really believes this and it's not just coach-speak, then he's going to have a very short tenure at New Mexico. Locksley attempted 3 on-sides kicks in the 4th quarter alone and then he wants Texas Tech to take a knee. I don't think so. I'll say this a few different ways.
If you play with fire, you're going to get burned.
If you play with the bull, you're going to get the horns.
Awful Announcing and Awful Officiating: Would it be too big of a deal for the announcing crew to pick up a roster a day or two before the game and get familiar with the players? I could count on two hands where they both were clueless as to certain players making plays and mis-identified players. I shudder to think how many New Mexico players were mis-identified.
The officiating was awful as well and I typically don't comment on officiating. Just awful on so many levels.
The Offensive Co-MVP's :: RB Harrison Jeffers, WR Tramain Swindall and QB Steven Sheffield: The outcome of the game was truly dependent on Jeffers turning the corner and getting outside, Swindall making huge plays after the catch and Sheffield turning it on in the second half.
The Defensive Co-MVP's :: CB LaRon Moore and CB Jamar Wall: I really wanted to just give this to Wall, who forced a fumble, recovered it, broke up 2 passes and had 6 tackles, one of those going for a loss. Moore deserves credit too as he also had 6 tackles, 1 fumble recover and broke up 1 pass. I didn't think anyone along the line deserved this honor and I thought the cornerbacks had pretty good days.
The Special Teams MVP :: Ryan Erxleben: I think there's problems when for two games straight, the MVP is the punter. Erxleben had 4 punts total, and of those 4, 3 were inside the 20 yard line.

Sadly, You are probably right.
I was on the Potts bandwagon before the season started…not anymore. After what I saw yesterday I’m starting to question Leach’s decision at QB. Sheffield should be the team’s starter the rest of the season. Watching Sticks come in and just tear it up right away should tell you something. A mobile QB is a welcome relief. I can’t bear to watch Potts stand in the pocket like he has all season any more. I’m not saying Potts deserved a concussion….but you’re just asking for a concussion standing like a statue in the pocket. I halfway expect a pigeon to roost on his head while he is waiting for a receiver to get open. It would be silly for Leach to stick with Potts if he continues playing like this.
Oh…and hats off to Torres for the awesome on-side kick return.
I think Seth is sitting on the fence quite a bit here. I respect the impartiality of an attorney as much as the next guy…but have a conviction, bro! Too neutral in this post regarding the QB situation. I don’t expect you to criticize one guy or the other. That’s not your style. But c’mon. Give your readers an opinion as to who YOU think should start at QB. It’s not like Potts or Sheffield will call you out if you pick one over the other : )
Pott’s may (or may not) be the better QB if he had protection like Harrell did last year. Sadly he does not.
He doesn’t seem to be able to sense when or where pressure is coming from, and on the rare occasion that he does, he seems incapable of turning it into a positive.
Even when it didn’t work out, Sheffield clearly felt the pressure and attempted to move away from it, often giving him a few extra seconds to make a play.
Unless the OL play drastically improves, I think Sheffield is better for the team at the moment.
I'm still a Potts supporter, but
Your last sentence is a very good point. Potts may end up with a baker’s dozen concussions if he extends his statue impression into Big XII play.

Seeing Sheffield there are only two things one can infer. EITHER Potts is holding the ball too long (in which case we need to switch to Shef) OR our OLine is terrible. It’s possible both are true, but it’s pretty clear that our offense isn’t going to get on track with Potts playing behind this line.
Kind of a head scratcher...
Anybody else get cut off from the ongoing Tech game by FSN..so they could jump to the Baylor pre game? I missed the last 5 minute 50 second to watch A. Briles blather on. Sometimes you just have to cuss at the screen. Thank goodness for Satellite radio! I am glad that FSN picked up the K state game but crap it sure screws up my tivo operations.
I never saw that Torres on side kick return Old Brian Jensen sure was excited though.
On the game itself ditto on the uninspired defensive play and on offense just too many drops by receivers. We all know this offense thrive on precise execution. Not a great deal of precision displayed on this game. I know the team was pressing to make up for the loss to UH but darn they need to settle down. Let’s all pray we don’t get anymore injury bug attacks. Geesh.
Onto K state !
"do routine things routinely"
Wondering????
Kind of struggling on how to pose this… but, after the Kendal sack, I remember Potts played very well for the most part, but during the Houston game it seemed at times there were lapses in his judgement as where the ball should go. After his first pass in the NM game there seemed to be the same lapse in judgement, yes…… I know he was on track for another 400++ yard game, but the lapses seemed to get worse after each sack until he had to sit down. I wonder if the Kendal sack caused a mild concussion that went undiagnosed, Potts being a tough S"O"B" wouldn’t complain of any discomfort and would continue to exert himself in practice and in games thereby making the condition worse. I certainly hope this is not the case and the boy is back on the field very soon.
I have the same impression
Pott’s decision making is spotty and I starting to wonder too if he didn’t receive a concussion at the UT game that went undiagnosed. Potts was throwing in to double and triple coverage and just seemed like he was totally confused by the defenses he has faced since then.
Gotta go with...
Sheffield. Potts looks like he’s lost and lacks the skills when a play needs adjusting. Sheffield will scramble around until he finds a receiver and run the ball if necessary. Potts has the arm strength but that’s about it. I have seen enough at this point and I’m convinced that Potts won’t lead this team like Harrell did. I loved the enthusiasm that Sheffield had entering the game against NM. I wanted to see Potts be our guy but his chances are running out as we can’t afford another early loss. At this point yes, I am throwing him under the bus.
This year
This version of air raid works better with sticks due to his mobility…..need a heavier dose of running also. Can we stop taking dumb penalties? Ruffin has poor pressure and poor coverage…..after feeling uplifted about the d in Austin, not so much anymore.

Sticks until Potts head is right.
We’ve seen Potts in big games play well. He can effectively lead the Red Raiders offense. Yesterday he looked totally confused. It wasn’t just interceptions..both quarterbacks had interceptions. Everyone was turning the ball over yesterday. Potts missed some very easy throws and was just getting nailed in the backfield over and over. Lots of people were calling for him to sit down for a series or two and get his head straight. It was not his day.
Although I think we could’ve won with Potts at the helm, I don’t think we would’ve won with the margin we did. As others have said, Sheffield’s mobility gives him an advantage over Potts behind our crumbling offensive line. His ability to extend plays and become elusive was more Harrell-like, and he seemed more accurate on those short passing routes.
More than taking responsibility and being accountable for your mistakes, you need to be showing improvement and not make those mistakes again. I think we’ll see Sheffield again against K-State, and we’ll see if he can keep his word and fix those glitches. Potts has accounted for his mistakes and then seemingly not improved continued making a lot of them. He needs to work on his awareness and scrambling in a bad way.
And our O-line needs Carter and a good dose of angry shouting.
Let's start at the beginning
I’m getting a very clear understanding of the importance of having a QB for 3 years instead of the plug and play 1 year senior. Leach’s offense is a timing/tempo offense and it takes a while to get that down. We’re used to Harrell who had three years at QB to get really sharp. Potts gets this year to learn and next year to play and then goodbye. I think the same with Sheffield?
The root of our problems is the OL. They are simply getting pushed around and run past with regularity. The’re just playing with no fire or anger. I can only describe them as PINK, as in pink as a puss… you know what I mean? Potts would probably not be injured if it weren’t for them. Do we have the right guys in the right spots? Coach Moore better figure that out.
I’m with Seth on the receivers. Britten can’t get open or when he does you have to cross your fingers for him to catch the ball. Torres and Zoo do good but there’s really no break away threat from them. Again, do we have the right guys in the right slots?
I don’t know what to think about this D. In road games against ranked teams we look and play pretty good, then at home against unranked teams we struggle and I wind up yelling F.. You Lyle Setincich at the TV. I will continue to support Ruffin. He gets 5 years to put together the D he wants. This is his second year as DC, so he’s got 3 more. I think we all expect more from our D.
I can only repeat what we all saw and have seen so far this season. 1. no real pass rush or pressure from the front 4. They looked OK against UT but where did that go?
2. the LBs are overmatched in pass coverage. This is probably a substitution problem or again, maybe the wrong guys are in the wrong positions? 3. when we play conservatively we look really bad, let the talent that we have on the field loose. 4. our DEs are not fast enough to get pressure on the QB. 5. our secondary is OK. they haven’t gotten burned too badly and are starting to lay some huge hits.
Let me know what you guys think…
Tech, to this point, has lost about half of their starters on both sides of the ball, and the special teams are no better overall than they were last year. We have taken it for granted that the coaches would be able to “coach up” the returning players and newbies. Has— not — happened. Other teams seem to have figured this spread offense out and are disrupting it with more and more greater frequency than the last several years. With so many teams going to this style offense, the defenses have simply learned more quickly how to attack. Also, as CoachT said, the offensive line is way out of sync, allowing more pressure than they should to be applied to the quarterback. As a result, because of Sheffield’s scrambling abilities, he may be the best choice until the line gets it together. I also think Potts is seeing more stars than he has let on. Give him a couple of weeks to get it all together, because regardless of whether “Sticks” can guide this team or not, Potts might be the best option in most games, if he recovers. And lastly, the RB’s simply are not getting enough touches. Running or catching swing passes or screens, they must have a minimum of 30 touches a game to keep the defenses honest. Otherwise we get what we saw Saturday way too much, the opponent’s defense pinning back their ears and going for the quarterback. Leach made a comment earlier in the year that the offensive line was not as strong as, but more mobile than last year’s line. It is showing now and other teams are keying on that. K-State is going to be tough, even at the Jones. Tech needs to really get it all together as it does not get any easier from here on out. Let’s go get the ’Cats!
TTpilk
DE's
Seriously, the DE’s forced 2 fumbles by the QB and caused an almost INT for a TD, if Perry catches the ball that Howard knocked out of his throwing motion, he scores a TD. Just watched the replay and there were a ton of holds that didn’t get called along with multple illegal chop blocks. New Mexico scored twice w/ 2nd and 3rd teamers in, late in the game. Those 2 series accounted for almost 170 yards. Howard did not play the entire 4th qtr. Sharpe was our for the last 2 series also. Walk- ons were getting some work in. The younger guys getting some experience, that is what you saw.
INJURY UPDATE
Cody Davis is going to be done for the year… he messed up his knee pretty bad.
Shawn Byrnes has a boot on his foot
Taylor Potts had a concussion and spent the night in the hospital.
Daniel Howard has some sort of stinger but should be ok
Thats all I have for now
Just another day at the office
goddamn this is a frustrating season. Hope Davis can recuperate and come back next year, he brings the kind of mean that we need at safety
Nathan Stone
also went to the hospital, he was taken on a back board after catching a knee to the head.
Where did you get the info on Davis? Don Williams of the AJ says in the “Carter reinstated” article “Tech also lost center Shawn Byrnes and safety Cody Davis on Saturday, but their injuries are not thought to be serious.”
Do you know something he doesn’t? Just curious because Davis is a great player and it would be really great if he is able to come back. Or am i just wishfully thinking?
QB, WR, Defense
First of all – I can’t believe you guys think we would have still won with Potts in the game. What did you see in that game that leads you to believe that. Potts had one TD drive and that was a good run after catch by Swindall for 79 yards. Potts drives TD, Int, Punt, Int, Punt, Punt – Sheffield TD, TD, TD, TD, Fumble, Int, Punt, TD, TD. That is what a QB is supposed to do get the team in the endzone.
Two many mistakes for a fourth year redshirt junior player in my opinion. I expect interceptions and bad throws from a freshman or sophmore. Harrell had 4 really bad games with multiple picks but his senior year he had 7 picks and Potts has 6 less than half way through the year and nothing leads me think those wil reduce. This doesn’t even count the fumbles and sacks.
Anybody think Britton’s deep ball problems might be from Potts not throwing a deep ball well. Potts has a great strong arm, but I think he doesn’t have any touch at all. All he does is throw bullets and when you throw the ball low it can create chances for defense to intercept. Also I don’t remember connecting on any of those deep fade patterns like with Harrell.
The defense is what it is. It’s not going to get any better. It hasn’t changed under Leach. They have a few good games and came up big when needed last year. But they have never been able to get off the field on third down when needed. But the idea is to limit them to FG’s and if we get TD’s we usually win as long as we don’t turn the ball over.
by Wheezer on Oct 4, 2009 2:21 PM CDT reply actions
Britton’s always had poor hands. I don’t think Britton’s problems are because of how Potts is throwing the ball, I think they’re just problems with Britton that he’s always had.
Objectively speaking with Potts in the game there’s no reason to believe that we would’ve won, but I like to think we would’ve found a way to win despite Potts. The only reason we were tied when Potts went out is because UNM’s FG kicker missed an easy one by a mile. And you could see the results immediately — Sheffield came in and was excited to play and lit up the scoreboard 6 times.
Potts
I’ll add this just b/c I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere before. Not only does Potts make poor decisions when he throws the ball, he also doesn’t know what to do with the ball under pressure. He has an intentional grounding call for each of the last three games; otherwise he takes the sack. He rarely just scrambles outside of the pocket and throws it away. That is a skill that should be inherent to a quarterback’s nature, like feeling the pressure, such that he should know what to do with the ball when under pressure and nowhere to throw it without having to think about it. I don’t know the cause, but he just doesn’t seem to have it together up stairs since the UT game.
This is all in addition to the lack of accuracy and defensive reads issues he has.
Potts may be out for a while...
Story I hear is he woke up this morning asking if we beat Baylor and why he wasnt at home. Could be just a story, although I dont know why a friend of his would make that up…
Pott's 2nd INT
“The second interception was simply a beautiful play by NM’s Nathan Enriquez. Potts had delivered the ball over the top between a cornerback and safety before and tried it again, this time, Enriquez made a great play. That’s football.”
Is this the one in which the receiver stopped to come back for the football? I think it was short. I will get a RR Replay later this week and will be looking for this play.
I really believe the game is running too fast for Potts right now, he is not making good decisions, and he is not accurate. 13 of 23, I bet he does better than that in practice.
If Potts is healthy, I bet he starts next week.
Yes, Britton missed a ball that looked like an easy catch…I bet he starts next week also. Keep in mind he has started 3 years now, he is the best we can develop for that spot….
Why are we not seeing more from Detron Lewis? I know he was injured last week but yesterday he had no indication of injury, he just didn’t get open or seen as much as I was hoping. Only two receptions yesterday…against N Mex ( roll eyes ).
We have some good players in the backfield…we lost a key guy with Cody Davis’ injury. Yes, Wall and Moore played excellent games. Wall was exceptional, IMHO.
Detron
limped off the field after his run for a TD. Looked like his hamstring again, but he still played. I dont think he is 100% yet.
Actually, if I remember correctly,
the NM DB or safety, grabbed his leg when he dove for the end zone and held onto it after he landed on the ground. The body rolled and the leg didn’t….. Kind of a bad deal……

Detron's injury, Britton, and Any given Saturday
When Detron scored, the New Mexico defender grabbed and intentionally twisted his previously injured ankle. He was re-taped on the sideline, but the ankle was obviously bothering him after the play.
Britton’s repeated drops have obviously gotten intohis head. Whether he can get them out of there and start catching the balls he should is going to play a big role in the success of this year’s team. Who do you replace him with if he doesn’t play? No one else has exhibited his speed, bloccking ability and savvy at that position. His drops hurt like he**, but he does other things that contribute to the team.
Tech is experiencing to a degree what Texas has experienced forever. Tech is now a name opponent who draws the opposition’s best game. Tech is a big name team after last year with all of the publicity generated by Leach and his merry band of pirates. That means that winning easy isn’t so easy anymore. Now, teams want to beat Tech because it’s a big deal to beat Tech. They try to play their best game against Tech now; no more sneaking up on teams. It isn’t easy getting up for a game week after week, particularly when your team is banged up and missing key players. It is a team game that takes team effort, with “stars” giving a big performance every week. Otherwise, you get beat. UTEP beat Houston by 17. OU lost again and is 2-2. Conference play begins next week and more gig names will be dropping. Tech’s depth and character have already been tested this year. It is going to be interesting to see how the rest of the year plays out.
Everyone we play brings their A game
Welcome to the world of Michigan, USC, Texas and Penn State. EPRAIDER82 is correct. We have medicore teams playing above their heads because its a real game for them. The Raders are punching their way into the big league. Why would anyone expect anything less than a great effort when facing the Raiders? Just expect the best body blow they can throw, keep counter punching and find a way to win. Remember UT in the Jones in 06? That was our effort to dethrone them. Get used to it. Its not always going to be a blow out. Why would anyone expect someones coaching staff to roll over in the Jones? Just find a way to win. Next opponent is K state. Its why we love the college game folks.
"do routine things routinely"
disagree about the D
The D has been much better this year. There aren’t many D’s that wouldn’t give up some yards against 91 plays. I do wish Ruff would game plan like he did against ut. I’m not convinced Potts is right in the head since the ut game. His decisions are very inconsistent. He also holds the ball too long and that is a problem. Anyway, regroup and go after kstate. Wreck’Em Tech
Uhhhhhh...
The reason they had 91 plays is because the defense was not stopping them and forcing 3-and-outs.
Scoring with 2 seconds left
I don’t have a problem with Leach trying to score with 2 seconds left. Tech has struggled from that distance (~2 yd line) all year long and it was a perfect oppurtunity for Leach to try something new. If you don’t want Tech to score, stop them. It really is that easy.
I agree with Seth as well regarding the onside kick attempts. If New Mexico expected Tech to throw in the towel, they should have done the same.
Agree
I think when the game is far enough out of hand that the losing quits trying to score is when the winning team can stop trying to score. If the losing team thinks it’s close enough to try to win, the winning team should keep playing full speed as well. UNM was obviously still trying to get points, so Tech had every right to continue to score. As far as the last couple plays, the only reason Tech was on the 2 yard line is b/c UNM tried an onside kick (obviously not giving up). If UNM would have just went deep, I doubt Tech would have tried to score.

5 turnovers
Another reason the D was out there for 91 plays was that we had 5 turnovers. 1 went for a td but the other 4 we had to try to defend and I think nm had several short fields and to really only give up 7 pts. when it really mattered is pretty good considering we lost 3 D players in the game. So I’m just not all that pessimistic about the D and somehow Leach has to let Ruff run the D like he did against ut. Wreck’Em Tech
Stephens??
No one has mentioned this yet, but where was Stephens all game? I only saw him in on the last series of the game? No punt returns, nothing. Is he in the dog house for some reason?
