Five Reasons Texas Tech Will Win :: Kansas St. Wildcats Edition

This weekly feature considers five reasons why Texas Tech will win and five reasons Texas Tech will lose to each opponent. Related: Five Reasons Texas Tech Will Lose :: Kansas St. Wildcats Edition.

Reason #1 :: The Sheffield Spark: There's no doubt that QB Steven Sheffield provided a needed spark in the wanning seconds of the first half, driving the team 86 yards in 0:56 seconds, completing passes for 12, 17, 25 and 32 yards, eventually resulting in a touchdown to WR Alexander Torres. The start of the second half was equally as strong as Sheffield led the team to 3 straight touchdowns. The problem with having that energy is that it can sometimes be difficult to maintain for such a long period of time. A fumble, interception and punting the ball on the next 3 drives before getting two additional scores late. I'm somewhat of an "even keel" sort of guy, although I can appreciate the energy Sheffield brings to the team and I'm hoping that same spark continues this week as well.

Star-divide

Reason #2 :: Stuffing the Run: Despite what we thought was a rough week last week against New Mexico (giving up 115 yards on 35 carries) the rush defense has really been pretty damned good this year, good for 4th in the conference, and is 4th in the conference in yards per attempt. But for the year, the Red Raiders limited Texas, who is averaging 200 yards a game, to 135, while Rice and North Dakota failed to muster more than 135 yards combined. The one "bad" game was Houston, where Texas Tech allowed 144 yards on the ground.  KSU QB Grant Gregory is similar to Case Keenum in the sense that he can run with the ball, however, I'm guessing that the Red Raiders and Ruffin McNeill have learned their lesson in allowing quarterbacks to kill you on 3rd downs and would look for a little better containment from the defensive line.

Reason #3 :: Cohesive O-Line: The return of RG Brandon Carter is going to be huge for the line. As much promise as guys like Lonnie Edwards and Mickey Okafor have, they're not quite ready for prime-time, but I feel pretty good about the rest of the group. LT Terry McDaniel is learning on the run and although he did have a holding call last week, he didn't give up a sack and looked pretty solid. The loss of C Shawn Byrnes was significant last week, but the more I consider this, I think Justin Keown is going to be fine, that it's just a matter of making the right call and having an entire week with the first team will help him significantly.

Reason #4 :: Playmakers: Last week there were a number of plays for 20 yards or more: 79 yards to WR Tramain Swindall (TD); 32 yards to WR Detron Lewis; 32 yards to Swindall; 25 yards to WR Alexander Torres (TD); 20 yards to Lewis; and 62 yards to RB Harrison Jeffers (TD). That's 6 plays for 20 yards or longer, 3 of which went for touchdowns. I've sort of bemoaned the idea that this club doesn't have a ton of playmakers in this group, but that's really not an accurate statement. Watching Jeffers makes all of us realize that he's a guy that needs to have the ball in his hands as he has the ability to make plays, but I won't sleep on Swindall any time soon. Since he was benched for the first game, he's leading this team with a little over 90 yards a game.

Reason #5 :: Struggle to Score: The Kansas State Wildcats have truly struggled to score this year and are dead-last in the Big 12 in scoring offense at 23.6 points a game. There are some interesting splits as well in that in KSU's two road games, they're averaging only 12.0 points a game, while averaging 35.0 at home. The one score that's swaying the 23.6 average, being the 49 points put up against Tennessee Tech (this happens against all non-conference opponents, so Texas Tech is in the same boat). If the Red Raiders can hold Kansas St. to their average and the Red Raiders do their thang offensively (and not turn the ball over, please do not turn the ball over), then there's not any reason this shouldn't be a 14 point affair in favor of Texas Tech.

Jeffers is a playmaker. Stephens is a playmaker. Detron is a playmaker. Batch is a playmaker. We have these guys. Problem is we haven’t been in sync enough for them to show their ability. This has a ton to do with the OL and QB. I’m not bashing either unit but they need to start to get onto the same page. Whether its Potts or Sheffield. If the OL and QB start clicking look out.

And our D has been godd (for a Tech D). We would be even better if the offense hadn’t been struggling so much. If the offense gets on the D will play even better. Right now the D is carrying the team IMHO.

I agree

the D has kept tech in games. Whether it was keeping teams out of the end-zone and making them kick field goals or coming up the a key int that should have locked the game away. They have been the Brightest spot on the team.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

Home game, its the Jones,Students are rocking the place
  1. The Raider O line will dominate the K state front x 4.
  2. Raiders have more receivers with talent than the Wildcats have d Backs with ability to cover
  3. 3 The Raiders defensive front 7 will get the required 5 – 7 three and outs needed to eliminate the Nebraska style run up the middle on first down, throw short 2nd down, run wide on 3rd down game plan. Thus negating B.Snyder goal of gaining 11.5 yards get a first down, keep the clock running and ultimately shorten the game. But yes fellow fans that is the Wildcat scheme/game plan.
  4. 4 The new K state QB will be sacked 3 times and throw 2 x interceptions. Pressure and containment.
  5. 5 The Tech QB will not be sacked and will only throw 1 x interception. Tech Running backs assault the “Cats” for multiple first downs.
  6. 5a The Tech kick cover units will not be burned- that’s right not one return by a KStater for more than 10 yards.
    D. Carona kicks off a lot- 90% of those kicks end up out of the endzone.

This game gets us to the midway point of the season (already?!?!?!?!). It’s time to get in synch…it’s time to bring everything they have on every play. We can still have a great year if the coaches and players are selling out on every snap. I fully expect the guys to come out on fire, stay on fire, and finish on fire in this game.

It’s not prediction time on the board, but I’ll put it out there…

This will finally be one of those games where we don’t have a ton to nit pick. Special teams will cost us a TD, but other than that the boys roll.

61

wow. I want to see 59+ points from the team and under 14 points from the opposing team so bad. But I just don’t know when they are going to stop playing at the other teams level and be at the level we all know they should be at.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

Ideally

I’d love to see Jeffers learning to play the Fly Sweep that Eric “the Elf” Morris ran so well last year.

I know someone mentioned it but why have we not used the shuttle pass this year like we have in the past. We have better RB than we had in the past and they could make a huge difference.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.

hope for the best....expect more of the same

I would love to see our team fire on all cylinders and win 61-20. Do i think we have the talent to do it – yes.

But we have not been able to put together 1/2 of a game where we play up to our potential…let alone full game.

I am looking for consistent play on Saturday.

I really dont know what were doing with Jeffers. I love the way he runs like he has to prove something. I think KSU needs to bring a ankle specialist to take care of all the broken ankles he is gonna force. All spring we have heard how much of an athlete he is and how exciting he is. I think he showed everyone last week how exciting he is. I like Sheffy, but please, give the ball and that screen pass to Jeffers ALL DAY.
We have great talent and I think Leach is finally got the flint clicking the fire…
BUT, I’d love to see more out of Lewis in this game. Sheffy is good enough to get the ball to him, we just need to see the Lewis we saw last season.
Sheffy will lead this team to victory, maybe a few turn overs (K-state has one hell of a Safety) but he is what we need to get the ball rolling.

Good stuff. Thanks Seth.

As long as our O-line can stay disciplined and keep the false starts to a minimum and our ball handlers can hang onto the rock, we should be in good shape. I hope we see the Raiders we’ve been expecting to see all year and not another sloppy win like last week.

When you look at the trio of Sticks, Leong, and Swindall it makes me wonder if our players are eating properly. If they need tips on bulking up I believe that I have come up with an affective program for putting on pounds. It mostly involves eating snack food and playing NCAA Football 2010 on the XBOX. Man I need to get a life….
