Texas Tech will play Texas on Sept 18th, 2010. This shuffle has led to the shuffling of the Houston game to Nov 27th and the TCU game right out of 2010. We will play Weber State on Nov 20th in their stead.

Whoa

Hmmm not sure what to think of this yet. I guess on the plus side we won’t be playing UT and OU back to back.

It’s great to play UT early and at home… but at the expense of trading TCU for Weber State? Talk about killing SOS. Ah well… it’s still a full season of football.

If we win 'em all, TCU wont matter

But I sure was looking forward to seeing that D against our O

What a shame, I was really looking forward to the TCU game because i live in Fort Worth. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that I don’t know about but this really seems like a bad idea.

Playing Texas Early

has to work in Tech’s favor in 2010! Wreck’em Tech!

Why in the hell?

A win is a win right? I was really looking forward to playing TCU. I wonder if the burnt orange nation is aware of this yet…..

My UT friends are well aware, the trash talking has already began.

by RdrPwr on Nov 11, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see the benefit

I see no plus here. The UT game would be on TV no matter the date. Perhaps the new date moves it from regional to national coverage. However, the TCU game would have been on TV and the Weber St. game will not be. I’d rather have an open date than play Weber St.

The plus side is it gives Tech six winnable games to close out the season, and if Oklahoma isn’t much better next year, nine. It’s well-known that a weak schedule full of wins is better for your ranking than a tough schedule with even one loss (see: Kansas, Boise St.), so trading TCU for Weber State is fine with me (we’re gonna grill ’em! (get it?)).

Playing UT early in the season is great. I don’t see how any of you can think otherwise. They always hit their stride midseason, and they’ll have a redshirt freshman quarterback and will be replacing some key guys on both sides of the ball. We’ll win it, quote me on that.

Playing Houston in the last game isn’t ideal, but if Tech is in BCS bowl contention, right around 10-12, a win over the Cougars to close the regular season could be a springboard for the voters perceptions.

I really like the schedule.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

I think this plays into our favor

i was a little worried about have UH and TCU early in the schedule as non-conference games. I like playing Texas early as I think next season will be to our advantage. This could play out really well red raiders!

by Raider1992 on Nov 11, 2009 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

That had crossed my mind, too. I have no idea how many players they (all 3) lose compared to us, but it would have been an easy chance for us to shoot ourself in the foot early. If that happened, the late season game vs UT would lose all its lustre.

by TechFirst on Nov 11, 2009 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

i know one key loss is keenum. he’s their lifeblood at the moment and true leader. i can’t really see them replacing him with a quality person immediately. whoever is starting for houston next year is gonna need some time to develop. losing a qb of that stature can pull the team down quite a bit (see harrell, daniel, bradford, etc.)

by pcrawttu on Nov 11, 2009 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

nope, my mistake. Thought he was a senior. At least wished he was a senior. Thanks for ruining my positive thinking.

by pcrawttu on Nov 11, 2009 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

Garrett Gilbert didn't redshirt

He will be the starter next year as a sophomore. The kid is really, really good. I think Texas will be just fine (the core of the defense will be back along with Malcolm Williams, all the running backs). Losing Shipley and Colt will obviously hurt, but GG is gonna keep UT in a lot of games.

Yeah this kills our TV time. No way weber state is on tv and TCU would have been. TCU is probably going to play in a BCS bowl and maybe national championship game this year. If they win or even lose their bowl game they will still be highly ranked next year. I was at the TCU game in Ft. worth last time when we lost and have been anxiously awaiting the rematch here in Lubbock for sometime. This schedule not only screws over our TV but also makes us very forgettabe at the end of the season. Instead of matching up with UT at the end we get weber st. and Houston?! If Houston is good next year I guess it doesn’t matter but what if houston slides back to crap-ville.

Really I’m pretty pissed. Analyze all you want but I expect us to beat TCU in the rematch and was looking forward to it. Now we have to wait. Plus attendance will take a dive. And tons of away games could be bad for the beginning of the season. And big games at the beginning of the season just don’t really matter as much.

by logan5555 on Nov 11, 2009 2:05 PM CST reply actions

So we play 3 home games total in September and October. Then 3 more in November. And Weber State?? Weren’t any high schools available? (UT doesn’t have any room to talk after that patsy they played last week.)

I wonder what the difference was in TV $$: UT as scheduled plus a big game against TCU vs. UT in prime time plus ZERO for a non-televised Weber St. It seems we’ll be doing good to break even, especially if you factor in the gate revenues. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe Weber St. will fill those $95 nosebleed seats.

UT will have a new QB, etc, but we’ll be replacing the other side of the O-line PLUS all but one spot on the D-line. Hmmmmm…..

by TechFirst on Nov 11, 2009 2:16 PM CST reply actions

but the O-line replacements have some experience from this year, so its not replacing in the usual sense of the word. And WHEN we beat Texas, people will show up because of our ranking. Especially for the cheaper games like Weber St.

by RdrPwr on Nov 11, 2009 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure UCF could take Weber State

Even though they are ranked #19 in FCS. Impressive.

by the1austin on Nov 11, 2009 5:13 PM CST up reply actions

The kicker in this is likely to be a similar situation to what it was this year, “If you move the game, that one will be on ESPN/ABC, and we’ll guarantee another game (or two) of yours on ESPN/ABC”

BIG CHUNKS.....

……I agree,, talk about a trap game, end of the year, non conference, nothing to gain, everthing to lose, really dont see how the coaches will get them up to play.

UH on Thanksgiving weekend

is a bad idea. This would have been a sure sellout any other weekend, but now I doubt it will be, and with all the students that will be out of town, attendance will be terrible.

I know enough people here in Midland that we could fill the stadium.

UH always blew into Lubbock Thanksgiving weekend when I was in school. I was always in Dallas & missed them all. But it always seemed to snow for that game. So plan on warm weather gear for the Houston game next year.

anyone stop to think that maybe UT wants this game early next year?

Maybe they’re thinking of keeping that “bad loss” early in the season now and helped in trying to tallk us into changing…

i don't think Texas schedules around expected losses to Tech

That’s just not the case. ABC wanted the game moved, and Money rules all in college football. I agree with the poster above that despite adding Weber State, playing Houston in the last game will really help Tech’s perception of schedule strength (assuming Keenum and Sumlin are back in H-Town).

by the1austin on Nov 11, 2009 5:15 PM CST up reply actions

ugh….we can we go back to a regular schedule? i would have preferred to have TCU and UH early because they both will be ranked(most likely) going into next season. That way to Ut game would have bigger south implications, AND make us look good to becuase we both would be ranked. But whatever, WRECK’EM!!

by wrench_raider on Nov 11, 2009 5:56 PM CST reply actions

  exactly what I thought

by Dr. Mark on Nov 11, 2009 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

This is actually better Tech and not UT.

When we win, we will be beating a highly ranked team, and move up, and it will be remembered as an upset throught the rest of the season, dampering the thought of Texas deserving a bowl better than Tech.
If we lose, we will be losing to a highly ranked team, and barely move down and the loss will be forgotten.

Actually, it would be nice to have both OU and UT games played early in the season, so that we could beat them early, jump high in the rankings, and stay there while in cruise control.

Just think, this year if we would have beat UT, their season would have been over.
Lets hand them their lower tier bowl disdain to them next year, by beating them early.

NCAA Football Grad. Rate: Texas Tech 79%, Baylor 78%, Oklahoma State 62%, Texas A&M 56%, Texas 50%, OU 46%

by Tech Pirate on Nov 11, 2009 6:24 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think UT will come into the ’10 season highly ranked…Maybe top 15, but they lose way too many people for them to be considered a national title contender.

by Tech92 on Nov 11, 2009 6:44 PM CST up reply actions

I understand....

Top 15 is still a position to get into the top 8 bowls…..
Plus, the Top 15 is still better than the other 105 teams ( 120 teams total? )

NCAA Football Grad. Rate: Texas Tech 79%, Baylor 78%, Oklahoma State 62%, Texas A&M 56%, Texas 50%, OU 46%

by kriess on Nov 12, 2009 6:42 AM CST up reply actions

I guess they lose some

But really, it’s Colt, Shipley, three OL, Kindle, and Houston. MAYBE Muckelroy, depending on whether he chooses to forgo an almost-guaranteed sixth year of eligibility. Considering how well the defense has been performing, do you think the loss of two, maybe three guys is going to make such a big difference that UT’s going to drop to worse than 15th?

Garrett Gilbert is an almost entirely unknown quantity. That’s really the only spot where there should be an expectation of a noticeable dropoff from the 2009 season to 2010.

?????????????

I am not sure what to think about this. I don’t like the idea of playing ANY FCS team. It gains us absolutely nothing, no matter the outcome of point differential, but if we lose, it kills our season big time. A loss (if there is one) to an FBS team would harm Tech much less than one to an FCS team, no doubt. Like some others, the idea of the split ends of a non-conference schedule can get ugly. I do think having UT early NEXT year may be OK, but at what cost? The loss of TCU on the schedule lowered Techs RPI dramatically, esp. with Weber State being added in its place….YUK! This year was destroyed because we had UT and UH b-b at a time when we were hurting and unsure—-at the first of the year. Of course, taking A&M lightly was not very intelligent either. Sometimes, I think the powers that be (Gerald?!?) are wearing rose colored glasses all of the time. My feelings are mixed, kind of like the scheduling of the 2010 season for the Red raiders. Again….YUK!

Effect of Schedule on Tech's BCS Chances

Regardless of the strength of the out of conference schedule, Tech will make or not make a BCS bowl based on whether they win or lose. If they go undefeated, they will play in a BCS or NC game. Lose one and they have a shot depending on what everyone else has done. Tech controls their own destiny.

I was looking forward to Tech beating TCU next year when TCU was going to be highly ranked, but ABC/ESPN controls CFB today. It will be played some other year. Playing Texas early next year and playing Weber State after OU in Norman may turn out great. Time will tell.

UT Officials are Denying Validity of Tech's Scedule

Here in Austin, all the radio and local TV hve been reporting on this as Tech releasing the schedule without consent from UT. At Mach Brown’s news conference, he was caught off guard by the news and called it “a possibility.”. The local homers of talk radio were offended as usual that a “bottom feeder” like Tech thinks they can dictate what the “5,000 lb Gorilla of the Big XII” does with their scedule. This is the kind of stuff raider fans in Austin have to listen to daily. But it does make me wonder if Tech discussed their scheduling plans with UT prior to releasing the schedule.

Yeah, it was premature: not everyone had signed the contracts needed to make it official. It will be official soon, but someone screwed up, wrote the article, and hit “publish”

Schedule is tentative,

not official. Article on Daily Toreador’s site, but I forgot to save the link. It is not official, yet was still posted. ESPN asked us to remove it from our site until everything is official.
