Should we root for Notre Dame?

If Charlie Weis is cut lose would  Mike Leach be offered the Job?

Star-divide

I know what your thinking:

1.Notre Dame would never hire a Morman.

This is football, that trumps theological differences.

2. Mike is a LDS kind of guy, he would never go to THE Catholic school.

See above, then add $$$$$$$$$$ and the fact it is Notre Dame.

3. Notre Dame is not ready to admit that they can no longer recruit with USC, Texas, Alabama...ect and are in need of a new fangled offince to compete with the big boys.

I realize that they are a little slow to come around to new thinking,  like no women until 1972.

4. Mike Leach is just  a little to weird for ND and Lou Holtz would go postal.

I admit you got me there.

5. Mike has a fat new contract in a no income tax state and is just now starting to recruit top level talent.......

It is Notre Dame, the tradition, the History, they need a savior bad.........he could be a Modern Day Saint.

I just don't trust the sneeky SOB's

notre dame is too traditional to even think about going after leach. there are tons of other guys with notre dame connections that would be considered before him.

ND seems to like going with someone who has prior connection to the university. Also, Leach is way too controversial for them. Leach also makes about twice as much as Weis – plus I think Leach likes that he can talk about pirates and sort of make up his own thing with the school, which certainly all the traditional Notre Dame fans would frown upon.

Notre Dame’s self-importance doesn’t make sense to me. Huge fan base, etc., and they’re too good to join a conference because they’re Notre Dame. Everyone seems to forget how mediocre they have been in recent years and start making fresh pitchers of kool-aid for the ND faithful every year. They were supposed to go to a BCS bowl this year. Supposedly they had the planets aligned, and instead they’re 6-3 and got beaten by Navy, again. Oops.

Ever read a Notre Dame fan blog?

These people are so delusional they think that they’re too good for Urban Meyer because he doesn’t discipline misbehaving players harshly enough. Even if Mike Leach was Mike O’Leach of the Dublin O’Leaches and kissed a picture of the Pope every time he sent a play call in to the quarterback, he wouldn’t have the resume necessary to swing the ND job. Not that he (or any sane person) would want it at this point.

I have actually been worried about this for a couple years now. My wife and I were just discussing it the other day. I was doing most of the discussing. I think football wise it would be a great fit. Leach is successful and keeps discipline among his players. He is academically focused and he wins despite his operating budget and recruiting competition. South Bend, Indiana is no better a place to be than Lubbock. I am sure we have better looking women too… But it is Notre Dame. Knute Rockne, Touchdown Jesus, The Four Horseman, Win One for the Gipper.

I don’t know how big of a deal being a Mormon is or the off color comments. I guess it depends on how bad they really want to win. Even with all the preferences they are given in the system already, I don’t think they can win again without a coach like Leach. This will be interesting. Will they go against their Catholic beliefs hiring a Mormon to win football games? I am not Catholic so I don’t know how the two feel about each other. What was Ty Willingham’s connection to Notre Dame. I am sure he was not Catholic.

ND sucks. Always root against them. Always.

Won't happen

Leach is way too out of the box for a traditional school like ND. The ND job comes with a ton of pressure and countless appearances that Mike would hate. Not sure the Mormon and Catholic religious differences would go over well either. As a Catholic myself I can tell you that some of the best people I have as friends are Mormon. I just don’t think a school like ND would look at a guy like Leach for reasons beyond religious affiliation. I think they will probably get a guy from the northeast somewhere. Plenty of coaches would flock to that job once a vacancy is announced. I see Weis there for 2 more seasons before they cut him loose.

From what I have read ...

It seems that ND has their sights set on the Cincinnati coach. Which makes allot more sense, he puts a bunch of points up and has nowhere to go but up.

Secondly, ND is the kind of place that would drive Leach out of college football, this is a guy who absolutely HATES interview time after tough games, and ND is one of those schools that sits the coach down for a few hours after every game and grills for a few hours. There would be too much scrutinized with Leach… too much trouble on both ends.

And as for the not picking a Mormon comment, I would rethink that statement… We are talking about a school that has their stadium set up so that the giant, building size painting of Jesus can watch the football game…

Zero percent probability of ND even asking permission to speak with Leach. He isn’t a fit there in any capacity beyond x’s and o’s. And at ND, x’s and o’s are only 50% of the equation.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I have actually been thinking about this since the beginning of last year. I think Leach could dominate there. I think recruiting there is too difficuIt to win with a typical offense, but I think it is good enough to put in a specialized offense and win. I am neither Catholic nor Mormon so I don’t know how the two feel about each other. I have a cousin at Notre Dame and another, his brother, in the Naval Academy. So Notre Dame comes up in conversation. I don’t think they would enjoy his shananigans like we do.
