Xerox State
Ok, here for 2 weeks now I have been finding myself cruising around on OSU fan boards like orangepower.com and ESPN etc, and I just can't hold in my frustrations anymore... Where do these guys get off? There is so damn much trash talking about the raiders coming from these guys its ridiculous, I just got done looking at a discussion board 11 pages long with comments just bashing Tech and Tech fans in general (not even aggies or Longhorns bashed us this much)...
I mean is it just me or did we not put these guys in their place hard enough last year? Here it was, they came into town touting Kendall Hunter and Dez Bryant were unstoppable, and how Robinson was the best QB out there, ooohhh Tech's defense had no chance of stopping them... and the contest was over by half time! I mean it wasn't even a game, in my opinion our D is stronger this year than last year... so what is out there to say we don't make them look even worse this year?
Actual football teams aside, I have been completely caught up in the "traditions" OSU seems to be so proud of... So after reading the posts this is what I gathered...
Tech Traditions that seem to have influenced OSU's "Proud Tradition"
-The Masked Rider has been a time honored tradition at Tech for many years now, riding out at football games from SWC days to now... Somewhere around the year of 1984, OSU decided this was pretty cool and adopted 'Bullet' (OSU's answer to the Masked Rider) Kind of frustrating but understandable ... I guess
-'Guns Up' has a wikipedia page which dates the salute back to 1961, starting widespread use in 1971. I tried to look up OSU's hand gun signal they use these days and have only been able to find comments posted by past alumni... From this I gathered that the 'pistols firing' (or whatever they call is) didn't surface till the 90s, and looks an awful like the guns up don't you think? Many alumni were making noise that they refused to do it as it looks like they are cheering for TTU. However, current students claim the symbol has been around forever and we need to "deal with it"
-Lets fast forward a bit to "Orange Power" ... now I noticed earlier this year here on this board people noticing during the OSU v UH game, a chant sounding awfully close to "Raider Power". Now this was discussed at length http://www.doubletnation.com/2009/9/8/1021142/did-i-hear-orange-power-during-the
Now on these OSU boards they like to fire back claims that we stole their beloved cowboy mascot...
-How in the HELL does Raider Red look like their cowboy???? Their mascot is a dude dressed as a cowboy wearing a giant plastic cowboy head. I just don't see how this is even argued, who the hell wants their mascot?
I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait to see Tech beat the hell out of Xerox State again! Going into the season they were my pick as the #1 most over-rated team in college football, and they have not disappointed me so far. 2 SI covers, endless media coverage, and a top 10 start and it comes to this... Tech can fully expose OSU once and for all this weekend and I just can't hold in my excitement anymore!
Mind you, I routinely read other teams boards going into the games to try to pick up some insight into where they are coming from, though I never post on there... I just find that to be in bad taste, but I cannot wait to see what they have to say after this one.
OK, guess I'm done ranting for a while

Didn’t they used to be the ‘Aggies’? How long ago was that? Therefore, how long could they have had the cowboy mascot?

Actually
They have us on that one… They used the cowboy a long time ago. They officially started using Pistol Pete in 1958.
We started using Raider Red in 1971in response to the SWC’s ban on live mascots traveling to away games.

Raider Red is not a cowboy..
Raider Red if you check closely is molded after Yosmite Sam. Now somehow that’s stealing Pistol Pete? And our Masked Rider is and has always been a Zoro type character in keeping with our Spanish influence @ TTech. So the cowboy ride doesn’t bother me as much as the “guns” and “raider power” copycat stuff!!!! TTech needs to win like they did last year and this will all go away…..for another year. Wreck’ Em Tech

Apparently there is some history to “Orange Power” as some familiar with games in the 1970’s have told. I’m not sure how recently Raider Power came around, but apparently, it was in its infancy while osu had Orange Power already going. Each is likely a derivative of an earlier chant, though. Nebraska seems to have “Husker Power” so it could be from there? I know that “Texas Fight” has been a chant for a very long time as well.

My mother enrolled at Tech in 1970. She confirmed that "Raider Power" was heavily in use.
She in turn called her cousin who enrolled in 1962 and he confirmed that “raider power” was in use then too. I would ask my grandmother how it was in the 1940’s but I don’t think she would remember. So 1962 is the earliest I have so far…….

Wow
As you mention it, my Grandmother was in one of the first classes that accepted women out of Tech, Ill have to ask her about it (though I don’t think she went to many games).

Interesting.
My great-great grandmother, Mary Woodward Doak, was the first Dean of Women at Texas Tech (then Texas Technological or something, I believe) from 1925-1945. I imagine she was the Dean when your grandmother went to Tech.

Not entirely related
but I was a lifeguard in the summer of ‘08. An old man came in to swim a mile every day, and one day started talking to me about school. Turns out him and his wife both graduated in the late 20’s. They both started asking me questions about the school and how it was doing, but he seemed to only care that the barn and silo were still here. He has some stories to tell about them! Mentioned that they put a goat in the silo to keep the grain compacted, then covered him up on accident once haha.

I read all the post on their website......
They hate us. They really hate us.
Terrible. But also funny at the same time. It was frequent to read post about the “bad fan base” just about every other post. Why is that?
They never said anything about hating us because we’re good at football. Why is that?
The “academic smack talk” was rather frequent also. Oklahoma State used to be my other favorite in the Big XII. Not anymore. I have more respect for OU at this point. Nebraska is my 2nd favorite now.
It’s flattering really.

I don’t think they have a school that is that good. I could be wrong though. Also I went to one game there and painted up and stood with some guys the whole game. We were on the OSU home side. Everyone seemed pretty nice to me. I guess money can ruin people. They must be getting big heads b/c of boone pickens which is sad. B/c the fans seemed nice when I was there. BTW this was for the game probably 3 times ago there when toogood missed a FG I believe and we came back in the fourth and almost won.

My level of interest in anything that happens in Oklahoma is very small
and you exhausted it by the end of the first ’graph.

Never understood trolling opponents blogs/message boards
The best analogy I can think of is that of an ultra-conservative tuning into MSNBC and getting irate at the “nerve” of those left-wingers. Well, uh…duh! Who cares what opponent’s fans think if it doesn’t involve stats or facts-based analysis (may just be the engineer in me) and who cares whose traditions trump whose (please, guys n gals, don’t turn into Aggies).
Seems like there’s enough debate on this site if you need to get your blood pressure up. Stop cheating on Seth! : )

You'd be pissed too...
If you had some guy bankrolling your program for years, pumping ridiculous sums of money in, only to be 4th best in the Big 12 South. This year they’ve already been exposed as “meh”. That and the fact that Tech destroyed their hopes and dreams last year…I can see where they’d be kinda pissed.
Raider Red is like a Zorro/Highwayman kinda guy. Yes, they both ride horses, but Raider Red has awesome adventures stealing from wagon trains, outrunning the law, and generally thwarting greedy dudes while sweeping hot latina women off their feet. Dig the stache’.
Pistol Pete is spending ‘quality time’ with his cowboy buddies on the lonely range and riding his horse back and forth up the trail in a massive cloud of cow-produced methane gas.
