Scouting Baylor (a little early)
I went with my wife (a UT fan) to Floyd Casey for the Baylor game today. I wanted to share my thoughts on Baylor since they are fresh in my mind and Tech has them at the end of the month.
Despite the score (47-14), the Bears have a few things to offer. For starters, Nick Florence (QB) plays like a Freshman and was completely outmatched. However, he has good pocket presence (feels the rush) better than any freshman I've seen. That means he may make some mistakes (3 INT's today), but UT didn't once catch him by surprise. I think that's a huge plus and something that Tech can't discount.
The big pluses for Baylor are on defense. Clifton Odom (CB #20) and Jordan Lake (FS #21) gave McCoy a hard time today. If you look at the game stats, McCoy was limited to 181 yards passing. I think that is because Lake and Odom shutdown half the field. Anything that went their direction was either incomplete or met with an immediate tackle. They eliminated receiver yards after catch by wrapping-up extremely well.
You might be thinking that:
-a blowout win today means that Baylor is no match for Tech
-McCoy only threw for 181 yards because the running game worked very well (224 team rushing yeards) .
The reality is that when Baylor went with 5 DB's, UT ran the ball and Baylor didn't have the talent to stop it. I've never seen a DB substitution for a LB make such a difference. In contrast, when Baylor went with 4 DB's, UT threw the ball with enough success to keep the Baylor D on its heels. I was reminded of Tech's defense against tamu.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

That reminds me...
The Baylor fans were great. That includes an excellent student section. However, I can’t help but think that only the hardcore fans showed up and they’re more likely to be decent people. The same probably goes for any school (except tamu). Winning has a way of bringing out the morons.
On the negative, this was basically a ut home game. Baylor did a sorry job supporting their seniors at their last home game. I know their seson is a loss, but they were playing #2 UT and there’s not much else to do in Waco on a Saturday morning.
My wife is also a Baylor alum…I have always enjoyed going to games in Waco, though this year is first we haven’t been at least once in about 7 years. We typically go to the Tech game and either UT or A&M and it ireminds me of the days when Tech would serve as the defacto home away from home for the big boys. The fan base there is decent, but not big enough to gobble up enough tix to keep the bad guys out.
I think Baylor lost a lot of the emotion and enthusiasm with RGIII went down. That’s too bad, as I was hoping to see Baylor assume a spot above the Aggies in the South. I think Art Briles has them pointed in the right direction, but their academics will always make it tough to compete regularly.
They play very hard and get the most out of what they have, but it’s usually not enough. I’m not worried about this game for Tech, but I hope the players are.
At this point...
I wouldn’t dicount Baylor at all. We have just as good of chance of loosing this one as any other. My wife is a Baylor grad also and ex-cheerleader to boot so I will be hearing it all year should we give this one away. We should destroy these guys but the same was said for A&M so lets just hope we can squeek by and finish with some dignity. If Griffin is back next season these guys will be much better and you can bet that Cotton Bowl game will be competitive. Our history in that stadium isn’t to good. I would love to see Baylor knock off A&M this weekend so GO BEARS!
