What the fuck is a block in the back on the kicking team?

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 8:51 PM CST reply actions

does the big 12 have a number to call for questions?

thats so crazy i cant even be that mad, i just want to hear an explanation

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

Explanation form Rule Book

FYI – Have to go to 2 places in the rule book to find the answer. Rule 2-2-3 states: “A block in the back is contact against an opponent occurring when the force of the intial contact is from behind and above the waist. (Exception: Against the ball carrier)”. That comes from the definitions section of the rule book. Rule 10-3-3-c states: “A block in the back is illegal”. Note in the definition it does not metion offense or defense – simply contact against an opponent. Now, I am not saying it was a good or bad call as they did not show it on replay – and in the 23 years I have officiated I have never seen it called on the defensive side of the ball (which includes the kicking teams).

Game day emotions.

We kinda let it slide during the open game threads.

A few nuggets from the first half

Tech 222
OSU 96

Penalties

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 8:52 PM CST reply actions

yeah we should be up by 14 if we didn’t get all those penalties

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Ruffin

making my comments from the A&M game look BAD. Props to Ruff and the D

by redraider2002 on Nov 14, 2009 8:52 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn’t blame him for that loss the players didn’t buy into A&M actually being ready to play

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

looks like you are right

I was calling for his head….but he has called this game as good as one could hope for

by redraider2002 on Nov 14, 2009 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

+1

That seems to be the case, but it will take some more time for me to stop thinking that tamu was a “lesson learned” and that it won’t happen again.

by Quatroux on Nov 14, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

A&M 10
OU 55

7:31 left in the third…they may hit 80

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 8:53 PM CST reply actions

The bye week gave me time to think about Potts and I decided that I was behind him no matter what. Boy am I glad that I didn’t get those “In Lubbock… There’s a Potts at the end of every touchdown” bumper stickers printed.

by Quatroux on Nov 14, 2009 8:56 PM CST reply actions

Some of this game wasn’t his fault. Plenty of drops and bad OL play.

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

You’d had have a hard time selling those I’m afraid.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

they have always had good defense, but their offense looks strong now too

by redraider2002 on Nov 14, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

heard they already are.

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

TCU is the real deal…and has been now for about 8 years.

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

their location may help them too

by redraider2002 on Nov 14, 2009 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

this

I'm not worthy. Really.

by Campeador on Nov 14, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

I think in the short run but not the long

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

We just need to win our games and take care of our buisness and the recruiting should be fine.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

NO

They have years to do that. Tech can fill a 1st team against anyone. TCU like many can make a great first team. TECH is starting the process of filling blue chip seconds. TCU is not there yet.

by Texas1836 on Nov 14, 2009 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

Harrison Jeffers needs to get more than one touch in the second half…he’s too good to not give him more than that.

TCU Beats UT in BCS Nat'l Championship

Things I’d like to see. Oh the cries from Austin

by Texas1836 on Nov 14, 2009 8:58 PM CST reply actions

TCU just isn't sexy enough

They have a small stadium and it is usually empty. Tech dominates that field when we play there. They can cherry pick but can’t sustain.

by Texas1836 on Nov 14, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Auburn 24
Georgia 24

10 min left…this is a good one.

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 8:58 PM CST reply actions

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

This just in…Notre Dame has won the big 12 north according to Lou Holtz.

by Remington870 on Nov 14, 2009 9:01 PM CST via mobile reply actions

lol..

May the best worst team win..

by merrik on Nov 14, 2009 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

TCU is a good team, but north Texas could care less. It took this ranking and ESPN gameday to sell out a game. They are usually 4,000-10,000 shy of a sellout in a pretty small stadium (40,000+). So, to me, they are irrelevant until their own town gets behind them : )

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:01 PM CST reply actions

Hope you are right

I have always envied their defense, but watching their offense tonight has me worried. They are legit

by redraider2002 on Nov 14, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, but sooner or later someone is going to hire patterson away and they will tumble

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

The $$$ in his contract are amazing.

Something like if he stays for x years he gets a million a year for life.

by Texas1836 on Nov 14, 2009 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

It took University of Houston exactly one big win against a good team to get all of Houston excited and talking about them. Granted their stadium is small, but people were clamoring for tickets to TTU here.

by merrik on Nov 14, 2009 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

I went to saw them play SMU and it wasn’t packed

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe it was just the TTU game?

They normally get minimal radio coverage here, but they actually got some time and buzz around town. Especially with the Texans being so mediocre. Didn’t they lose to UTEP? Was that before or after SMU? I meant there was buzz from about the OSU game until they got destroyed by UTEP.

by merrik on Nov 14, 2009 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

now it’s starting to remind me of 2007

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions

The first run was against a spy. our spy miss-read robinson’s angle.

the second run was without a spy. I think we stopped spying because they were catching our spy inside and hitting the edges with their backs.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

I’m never sure which is the real tech defense…the one in the first half, or this one…

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions

It is a bit different defense playing. they’re not making the same tackles, the coverage isn’t as tight, and we’re not getting to the QB. I think osu has learned that they can hold all they want so it’s all hands to the outside.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:47 PM CST reply actions

did we even have the ball for 3 minutes?

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 9:47 PM CST reply actions

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 9:55 PM CST reply actions

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 9:56 PM CST reply actions

Refs suck he is right there and how can he not see it

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions

he was so down he was he was smelling the turf fumes

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions

Just let them score so we can get the ball back

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

Given our lack of offense tonight, I’m not sure that’s a good idea.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

man, how do they miss these calls live?

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

they rely on the upstairs too much

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

They’re still about 100x better than baseball umpires.

by merrik on Nov 14, 2009 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

Come on really indecisive replay official..

Go with the call on the ground for me one time..

by merrik on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

too much arm tackling

by Dr. Mark on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

without replay, OSU gets hosed in a major way

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

OSU 36 plays
Tech 3 plays in the second half

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Good thing bout the defense: they’re not giving up big plays.

Bad thing about the defense: they’re giving up easy 3rd down conversions.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

I freaking hate OSU’s little post touchdown song.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 9:59 PM CST reply actions

I hate those stupid paddles

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

i think we should steal that tradition from them personally. It’s loud.

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

our fans would throw them and beat up people with them.

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Whats wrong with that? ;)

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

suprised

that the Big 12 hasn’t banned them

by ttubrian on Nov 14, 2009 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, it would be nice to get a good drive to tie it up and steal the mo

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

Our offense has problems this year and struggles mightily at times. Tempo, consistency at QB and OL, etc.

This osu team wouldn’t be able to challenge last osu’s team, but our team is also not nearly as consistent as last years.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

OSu was getting drove the whole first half and stayed in it. Now we have been getting drove. Hopefully we can stay in it with a TD here.

by TT4EVER on Nov 14, 2009 10:01 PM CST reply actions

TOP isn't everything...

but it is something. When it’s this unbalanced your D gets tired and your O gets cold. Tough to play on both sides of the ball that way.

by ttubrian on Nov 14, 2009 10:02 PM CST reply actions

They are gashing us on the run…162 yds so far…only had 30 something at the half

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 10:02 PM CST reply actions

Our only good QB has one wheel, we’re down 7 in the 4th quarter and the defense is worn out. We desperately need someone to step up and make some plays to have a chance at pulling this thing out.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 10:02 PM CST reply actions

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Ugh…our line isn’t stepping up in the pass game or the run game…weak effort

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions

Our line sucks. Ill say it one more time.

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions

so does sticks for freaking thinking he could get out of that. Should have thrown it away as soon as he was in trouble

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

no shallow receivers….. better than a pick

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:09 PM CST up reply actions

oh, man…looks like we can’t hang in this one…not a huge deficit, but Tech has shown less than zero in the second half

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 10:08 PM CST reply actions

I think you are right. We need a miracle.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

Or TT4EVER’s turnover.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 10:09 PM CST up reply actions

when has taylor potts “won big games”?

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:08 PM CST reply actions

OU is gonna kill us if we’re not careful

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions

so:
Sticks: Can’t move
Potts: Can’t throw
Doege: Can’t make the reads.

Answer: stick all 3 out there, have Potts make the pre-play read and call, snap the ball to Doege and have him throw to who sticks tells him to.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions

I think potts or doege would be a better option right now.

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions

Independence Bowl bound, baby!

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions

Our bipolar team is going to be the death of my liver

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

sometimes

sticks is great a scrambling, but he’s got this bad habit of sometimes running straight backwards. You should never lose 19 yards. Run left, run right, run forward, throw it away, or take the sack….. never run straight backwards (and spinning while doing it doesn’t help)

by ttubrian on Nov 14, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

He’s hurt. He can’t run. He’s just trying to do the best he can with one wheel.

by BTownTechster on Nov 14, 2009 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

yes i understand

and I still love him.
but he did that some when he was healthy to (at least against NEB)
I’m just saying it’s something he needs to learn

by ttubrian on Nov 14, 2009 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

God fucking dammit, spy that mother fucker.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

Howard would be the man for that job. A tweener safety

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

or spy with bird. he’s no good in coverage anyhow.

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

no, whitlock was the spy on that play.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

further’s my point about a 5.5

by ST04 on Nov 14, 2009 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

all starters are available on special teams.

by kayakyakr on Nov 14, 2009 10:17 PM CST up reply actions

Typically abhor Oregon unis, but they have a cool matte black helmet tonight. Pretty cool.

by Tech92 on Nov 14, 2009 10:15 PM CST reply actions

williams hurt….. not good for our already sucking D. 6 minute drive for a TD, and………. pushing buttons here but go for two. they cant stop batch up the 6 hole.

by RdrPwr on Nov 14, 2009 10:16 PM CST reply actions

Dear Captain Leach...

Please put Potts in, so Sticks doesn’t re-injure his foot. Also, GET JEFFERS THE BALL!!!
