3rd down and 10 shovel pass???????
Why were we running a draw/shovel pass with barely any time left? It is risky and takes time off the clock if don't get it. Leach did this against UH, it just doesn't make a lot of sense.
Also playing Stix wasn't bad but it was still questionable. Ruff McNeil and Leach made bad 2nd half adjustments. Ruff just doesn't mix it up very well. If they are running the ball 75% of the time for heavens sake put more men in the box. Pull a safety up. The safeties were playing way too deep late in the game, when OSU was running it every down. Try putting 8 in the box they didn't have but 1 pass for more than 20 yards which was early in the game. Please put more men in the box or change your formation. Don't know what Ruff was thinking with 5 minutes left.

Same reason OK St ran a bootleg from the 10 yard line with the game in hand, having run the ball down our throat the whole game. A friggin field goal puts the game away. Instead, Jamar Wall rocks Zac Robinson’s world and we’ve got a shot at sending the game to overtime.
Even D1 coaches make boneheaded decisions.

Getting cute with your playcalling is a 50/50 proposition
when it works you are a playcalling genius who understands how to exploit a defense that’s anticipating one thing. When it doesn’t you get message-board nobodies condemning you for a bad but not game-losing call in a drive that was basically a gift from Gundy to Leach.

are you honestly defending calling the shovel there?

Would you prefer I focus my frustration over an entire game worth of inadequacy on one play
that wasn’t even that big a deal in the final analysis? I get that there are a lot of annoyed and angry fans around here, but a little perspective is helpful. A shovel pass is a solid call on a down and distance where the secondary is dropped back into umbrella coverage and the defensive line is purely focussing on sacking the quarterback. Baron Batch is a guy you can trust to get solid YAC, and as it turns out the play set up what would have been a 1st down had Swindall not dropped a pass. There’s no easy right or wrong answer here like there was in the Houston game where not taking the field goal and points cost the game, if Leach had let Potts throw a longer pass in a 4 Verticals-type play I expect people would be criticizing Leach for being too aggressive and forcing Potts into a 4th and long in the event of an incomplete pass.

I just wanted to see the arm we heard so much about early on. No doubt, that play was not what cost us the game, but with 42 seconds left I just do not see the point in a shovel that may or may not get you a first down, but either way will leave the ball in the middle of the field with no timeouts left. It was just one of many bonehead decisions made in this game

You want to see Potts' arm?
He’s been using it all season to overthrow receivers. Or to throw a bullet pass to a back 3 yards away so it bounces out of the back’s hands. He has a rocket arm alright. He just misfires his rocket every time.

but why not a short route to the sideline if the safeties are in umbrella coverage? Anything up the middle just seems like a bad idea. Appeared to me that Potts was shaken from the two bad passes prior to that on the drive. But, as you stated, it really doesnt matter too much in the long run. Swindall dropped the pass that hit him in the chest. This play DID NOT change the game.

I think if Leach...
had the help of an offensive coordinator you would see better play calling. Leach is wearing too many hats this season and a good OC would help tremendously. I doubt we see that any time soon but I think the UH and OSU game could have had better play calling or at least a second opinion.

I have always thought having the HC be the OC or DC is a bad idea. It seems to work most of the time for Tech, but there are those critical points in a game when it looks to me like Leach out-thinks himself. At least with a coordinator you have four eyes and two brains looking at the problem at hand.

I believe that Lincoln Riley has stepped into the role of OC previously held by Sonny Dykes and Dana Holgerson. He’s new at the position and his job up in the booth is not so much to call plays but to point out certain things that the defense is doing s.t. Mike can call the plays. He also is supposed to be in Mike’s ear telling him that certain ideas are really bad (like going for it on 4th down in your own territory in the 4th quarter).
The shovel pass was a pretty questionable call without timeouts. I’m not sure why that was even an option for the qb at the time.
by kayakyakr on Nov 16, 2009 8:38 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That was a goofy call, no doubt. OSUs LBs had been pretty stout all night long and had not been suckered by anything whether a run or pass. At that point in the game, you go for the first down, not subtle plays that only work on undisciplined defenses.

Your back biting gets us nowhere
If I wanted to listen to constant Leach disparagement, I’d join TexAgs.
I’m sure you’d receive a warm welcome over there.

My criticisms of Leach are not unwarranted, petty or without merit, nor are they over the top or malicious – as is found on Texags with, well, just about any topic. These boards are for opinion. Yours AND mine. They don’t have to agree. You probably don’t notice, but I also give Leach credit.
Unwarranted would be blaming Leach for Britton dropping a pass…petty would be blaming Leach for not showing emotion…without merit would be claiming Leach is a terrible coach…over the top would be claiming Leach is purposely sabatoging Potts’ career…malicious would be calling Leach a goofy drunken womanizer. Nothing I say implies any of those things. (I realize you didn’t say I did, but I’m just saying…)
Questioning him on puzzling fourth down play calls, lack of overall team discipline, adjustments, run game strategy or clock management is fair, not back biting disparaging – and will continue either from me or any number of fans here. It’s part of the beauty of having an outlet like DTN.

Support group.....
It would be a shame if this board existed for the sole purpose of allowing each of us to sit around the campfire and tell each other every thing is going to be alright.
The notion that thoughtful criticism of the “play” of a coach or player is somehow over the line, is a slippery slope indeed. Coach Leach is, IMO, the finest coach to lead the Raiders, and has produced amazing results in his tenure.
In addition, his team has also played unusually poorly up to this point in the season, and I lay the blame mostly at his feet. (Whether it be talent evaluuation or just not getting the squad ready to play)
I expect him and the team to learn from their mistakes, and field a championship caliber squad next year, and I don’t believe that any of my comments are disparaging or petty, and to think they are requires a diagnosis of some sort, and medication.
by TTUMAR on Nov 16, 2009 6:40 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
At the end of the day ... It will always lay at the foot of the coach, general, CEO etc
Look of course we should always look to the coach- the ultimate leader for the teams success or failure. Keep in mind though while there have been losses all but 1 have been within 10 points. And but for a play or 2 we could be 9-1 right now. I say that we all need to get behind the coach and the team next week BIG time. Next year starts NOW. Win out go bowling and keep the momentum for what should turn out to be the championship year in 2010! This is OUR conference.
Go Tech!

Would you disparage a guy for parting his hair the wrong way or what size pants he wears?
In the same way, complaining about any of the number of things that Coach Leach has been doing for years out of habit, personality quirk, or coaching philosophy (for example, that Leach doesn’t run the ball enough or that he doesn’t care about penalties) is spiteful at worst and petty at best and serves no good purpose.
Now, I can move past a guy that doesn’t know any better, but it’s the same tired criticisms repeated disproportionately to any real examination of his coaching mistakes that I have a problem with.
If you think Coach Leach is the mistake, then just say so and move on. But this constant back biting about things that are never going to change as long as Leach is head coach is just malicious.
I'm not worthy. Really.

Hey Camp, if you dont like the way Tech92 parts his hair , explain your point of view to him and let him decide if he wants to do something different with it. Maybe, just maybe he likes it that way. Your constant badgering is tiring some of us.
And Leach doesn’t run the ball much in most of the games he loses. That’s my opinion, take it or leave it.
