Well, should be some good write ups as to what went wrong during this game.....
I don’t think it falls under everything, but it’s really damn close.

Our Problems start with Taylor and ends with Potts
I don’t think we have to fix a lot of things to turn into a good team. Everything else is in place except the QB. We lost a lot of momentum in the first quarter thanks to TP. If Sticks was healthy Leach should have given Sticks more reps during the practice week since he was coming back from an injury and we should have started the game with him. Also, after the Second interception, I think we should have still stayed with Sticks, because more playtime would have prepared him for OU. Now we have to live with Potts.

AGREE
The D was tired in the second half. OSU’s D was good enough to stop us from scoring no matter who the QB was.

Is it me…or does this team just drain you emotionally?? Coming off a bye I just expected a little more out of this team….I just have a sick feeling right now.
The Jamar Wall hit was awesome and I wish the team would have responded with a little more urgency to let Wall know his efforts was worth it. I do question the shovel pass, but the Swindall drop just made me sick.
Ok…going to retire for the evening. I’ll check back with you folks later!

Like I said last night, I am pretty much ready for this season to end. We have only occasionally shown how good we could “have” been. But we’re a very average team – thankfully in a conference having a very average year or we could be looking at much worse result on the year.
Tough to watch our offensive line get overmatched in pretty much every game against a semi-coherent team.

Post game show is saying that Potts has a practice jersey with “Nick” sowed on the back. Supposedly, it was Leach’s nickname for Potts’ alter-ego, the one that plays so well at times.

Potts is to be called Nick and only Nick from now on.’

heart breaker indeed.OU coming to the Jones.Even with this loss I ponder UH and A&M.Anyway.Hopefully we can get that win over OU and Baylor. This year has been a positive IMO for a great run next year.Could we be in the Holiday against USC???That would be something.Still a RED RAIDER and I appreciate every player on that field.
WRECK OU…
by slycanyon on Nov 15, 2009 12:12 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
USC possibly heading to the sun or worse. They’re currently sitting tied for 3rd, but are truly 5th.
If Oklahoma State makes it to the BCS (by winning out) and if we can beat OU and Baylor, we will be Holiday or Cotton bowl bound. If we win the last 2 and oklahoma state doesn’t win out, we’re looking at Holiday or Alamo (depending on Nebraska). If we win one of 2, we’re looking at Alamo, Sun, Insight, or Independence bowl, just depending on how the chips fall. If we lose out (god forbid)… 6-6 this year is still good enough to send you to the Insight bowl, I think, though there could be a very appealing “name” matchup for the Independence bowl (Auburn, Tenn, or Georgia are teams that may be available to that bowl this year).

OSU may have it tough at OU
They are playing in Norman….I know OU hasn’t been at their best, but a win in Norman is still tough to do. My hats off to OSU if they can do it.

any chance of seeing usc in the holiday bowl with us?
by RdrPwr on Nov 15, 2009 5:19 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
chance, yes. but they currently sit in 5th. Likely it’s going to be Oregon/Stanford depending on which team doesn’t go to the rose bowl, though Oregon State is also an option (as well as being able to play their way into the rose bowl as well.)

Question is are we bowl bound?
With Potts at QB I am writing down an L against OU and an L with BU on the road. Then we end up at 6-6, since this includes a win over a div II team, are we still bowl eligible? But I just hope we beat Baylor somehow and then Houston bowl or the Independence bowl is a more realistic possibility
by jef on Nov 15, 2009 9:53 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
you can be bowl-eligible and still not get a bowl invite
by mojavereject on Nov 15, 2009 9:57 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Pretty unlikely Tech would be left out at 6-6. Our consistency in appearing in bowls this decade, along with slowly improving fan support on-site, leads me to believe it would be a major deal if Tech didn’t go bowling. We’ll beat Baylor and erase any doubt. I didn’t think this year would be special, but I was hoping for 8 regular season wins. Bummer, but there is a small chance we take out OU. Small…
by Tech92 on Nov 15, 2009 10:39 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
‘f nothing else we end up in the Texas Bowl with a rematch with UH. I’m thinking the independence will take a 6-6 TTU team over a 6-6 or 7-5 ISU team.
In fact, I think that TTU is a more appealing bowl team than any other 6-6 team except maybe A&M because they still have a reputation as a traveling fan base. Kansas, Missouri or Iowa State, A&M and/or Baylor, and TTU or OU, can all finish 6-6.
Think about that, Baylor still has a shot for bowl eligibility, but they’ll have to pull off upsets of the last two Texas Universities that they play.
by kayakyakr on Nov 15, 2009 11:43 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
To answer your question
We are bowl eligible right now. You can count 1 win over a FCS opponent toward the 6 wins needed. If we had played another FCS, then we’d need to win another just to become eligible.

Yea one hell of a hit
but this is exactly the play that kills us. we wouldn’t of even needed a hit like Wall’s (not taking credit a way from the hit) but this kind of big play playing from our defenses is what kills us. we just need solid tackling from them and it’s never there. in this situation he made solid contact and lit up the quarterback, who by the way ran all over us till he finally got lit up, but for what seems like the past few years our defense relays on the big plays to win the game. Yea the magical texas game last year, wouldn’t of happen unless mccoy doesn’t throw the ball right to us for the pick 6(charbonnet I believe),In the second half of that game the texas offense came alive and tore us apart. idk whats necessarily, but hopefully its just better talent and hopfully we come about that, or else it’s the coaching staff/ idk what to put this on Leach but it is he’s responsibility to find a suitable staff to make up what he lacks in this area.
And Yea this might not make any sense because yes i have drank many of many beeers tonight but im still mad therefore I’m goin go ahead and break some more bottles out in the ally
by bliztix on Nov 15, 2009 12:54 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
A “good” defense probably averages about 6-8 “big” plays a game. These are fumble recoveries, key sacks turned into 3rd down stops, interceptions, stuff like that. That was the first big play we made in the 2nd half and that is what our defense is built around. You are right in that regards.
Personally, if you can force the big plays (3 sacks in the first half, the fumble in the 2nd, bunch of the same in the KU and Nebraska games) I don’t see a problem with a defense that relies on big plays and bends until it makes one. Look at UT: theirs is one of the best defenses in the nation and they are built to do just that: bend until you get a big play and then get off the field. No problem with that if you can do it with talent.

has any one checked yearly stats
before tonight we were tied dead last in penalties …..not just big 12. Before tobight we have given up 85 penalties and second to last in penalty yards at 757 roughly 84 yds per game. now i know blind zebras are never really tech fans and there has been some very favorable calls for top ranked teams this year but hard to win when you keep making these stupid mistakes…….how did we get a block in the back by kicking a punt ???

next step
we need to make the step the step towards where our defensive is one that is one that is renowned and feared from the opposing coordinators. otherwise we will be in this perpetual state of loserville(GaC like to those from DFW, that can understand)/ irrelevant football here in the big 12 where we can’t even claim a cotton bowl. i’m saying a that something isn’t working, argue it anyway you want but to stop any talk of I’m still the biggest fan and I’m going to be yelling my ass off here in a week when the other damn okies come to us

penalties...
If we can cut our number of penalties in half for the last 2 games, then we easily win out, no matter who we play. I saw a lot of heart tonight from our team on that field. But a few penalties killed us.

+1
I’ll hang my hat on that statement. I thought everyone played well enough to keep us in the game and give us a chance to win. I think we could have played anyone last night and kept it close. The single thing that kills me is the penalties. I can look past any mistaked at QB or a D that might have not “wrapped up” in the 2nd half.
BTW- I don’t think I yelled at the officials a single time last night. That’s a first.
by Quatroux on Nov 15, 2009 7:31 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
This is a Leach thing. He isn’t one who thinks penalties are that big of a deal and doesn’t make it a point of emphasis. Never has. Apparently, he’s smarter than the rest of the football world with that topic and we just don’t know it yet ; )

QB,D, and penalties
Just a few thoughts…Sheffield was not physically ready to play a college football game. It should have been Potts from start to finish.
The D just disappears in the 2nd half. It appears we are back to not being able to stop good running teams.
9 penalties for 74 yards is a terrible stat for an entire game, but that was our stat for the FIRST HALF alone. We should have blown them out of the water, scoreboard wise, in the first.
Very frustrating game. Really need to end with two wins and a bowl win. Tough loss.
Hope Wall and Robinson are OK. That was a vicious hit.

Back to?
Back to not being able to stop good running teams? When did we ever show that we could stop a good running team. Especially one with a QB that is not afraid to run with it.

He's probably afraid to run it now.
You don’t bounce back from that caliber of hit and not be a little gun shy.

Quick question and comment
Frustrations aside, and I’m really trying to not be mean, because that’s the right thing for this blog…………………..
1. How can a Texas Tech offensive look that flat at times and then so unstoppable at times?
My thought on this is it falls primarly on the quaterback. Potts seems to have drives that he doesn’t know what country he is in and other that he looks unstoppable. His passes seemed a little late at times. Also, seems like the offensive just doesn’t have passion to score. Light a fire under someone, take the ball and end this game. We could have taken control of this game in the first half.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, and now OU, which I think will make for a great game, should be some unbelievable match ups.

Nick
Will def start refering to him as that. . .
by taraebeth on Nov 15, 2009 8:31 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
and then it definitely will not be a great game. OU will run over us. If Sticks is healthy we need to give him more reps and get him ready. Nick is a good mop up QB but not good enough to be a Big XII caliber QB.
by jef on Nov 15, 2009 9:58 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I can't blame our defense
They gave the offense a perfect opportunity to go up by 20 points and force OSU out of their running game plan. If you’re somehow shocked that our defense went from clamping down on OSU in the first half to getting gashed in the second, check yourselves. OSU’s the most consistently excellent offense in the Big 12, and they were going to get their yards. This one goes on the coaches and the offense.

a letdown
D played great in our first half, then just got ruffed up in the second. Damn penalites would have made a 10-3 score in the first half. Sticks played with heart, Nick is so damn bipolar at QB, its just ridiculous. sigh This loss sucks but we cant be lollidicking this week. OU comes to town AND ITS MY BIRTHDAY NEXT WEEK AND I WANT A WIN DAMNIT!!!!!!!
P.S. DAMN SON!!!! JAMAR WALL IS BRINGING THE PAIN THIS SEASON!!!! WOOHOO!!!!

allowing only 17 points to osu is awesome (7 points belong to stix). they had a couple long drives, but you have to expect that from the top rushing team in the conference. the D had enough stops and played more than well enough to win this game. this loss is totally on the lackluster offense, penalties (osu’s first td was because of 2 dumb penalties), and losing the turnover battle.
by pcrawttu on Nov 15, 2009 10:08 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Second half tackling continues to be an issue with Tech. Kayak pointed out last night that in the first half Ruffin rotates players in and out with some consistency, but stops in the second half. I’m not sure if that’s an injury issue or if he’s seeing something we’re not or if the offensive tempo isn’t allowing for subs (I usually don’t buy that last argument). But for whatever reason, we can’t bring anyone down on the first hit in the second half.
by Tech92 on Nov 15, 2009 10:47 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think that it’s because Ruffin rotates his starters out at the end of the 1st quarter and runs the 2nd quarter with a heavy mix of 3rd and 2nd stringers. He’s trying to keep his 1st teamers fresh during the 2nd half and they do come out fresh, but I think they’ve also been coming out cold… Just not flying around and hitting as well during the 2nd half as the 1st.

dammit
1. The sob that hit Batch should have been flagged for helment hit. 2. Receivers need to be more focused and agressive. 3. Harrell was a hellava QB – I’m spoiled. 4. We gotta beat OU
by blackbeard on Nov 15, 2009 10:25 AM CST via mobile reply actions 0 recs
Until we get some better athletes at O-line, we are not a great team. Too much of what we do depends on a great line. For some reason, defensive coordinators have been able to figure out a way to take us out of the quick hit passes, so the QB now needs more than 2 seconds to throw. That is killing us. Average time for a QB is about 3.5 secs. With Tech this year it’s averaging closer to 2.5 (saw that somewhere, but can’t find a link) which really isn’t enough time for a receiver to get much separation – and the QB is forced to move so often which for us compounds the problem.
The defense has been spectacular for stretches this year, but has been terrible for others. So on the whole, it has to be a wash and a C grade all around defensively.
We really are what our record indicates.
by Tech92 on Nov 15, 2009 10:43 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
There is only one thing to talk about this year. We have no QB. That is it. Sticks could have been it but he got hurt. He probably should not have played last night and certainly was not his self. A healthy Sticks wins that game by 3 TD’s. We need a QB. The way the D held up only allowing 17 points is impressive at OSU. WE NEED A QB!!!!!
And how can you not love this team with guys like jamar wall giving everything they have. We need to certainly support this team as they are giving everything they have (except against A&M oddly).
by logan5555 on Nov 15, 2009 11:05 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think I agree with Tech92’s previous post: we’ve been spoiled with great offensive line play. It’s something that I really didn’t expect coming into this year. A senior at Right Tackle, a player who has been very active at every position at LT, a previous starter at center and a returning all american at guard? Truly only flat-out replacing one player? I expected that line to be very solid for us all year.
What we’ve been hit with, though, is injuries and inconsistent play by those players that I was expecting to be good for us. Marlon Winn has been very disappointing and Olson hasn’t really shown that he has the size or the first step to handle big XII ends. Byrnes isn’t the same player of his sophomore year. He’s lost his nasty streak or something. Carter has been inconsistent, though I think he is still the best on our line. I have to point to him shutting down Suh and the difference between our team when he was out against Kansas than when he was in.
In short, you don’t lose a leader like Rylan Reed (and if he doesn’t blow out his knee at the combine, he would have been drafted) and a now NFL starter in Vasquez and recover from that. On the positive side, we’ve seen that Terry McDaniels is the real deal and Waddle is about the same as Marlon Winn (Waddle as a freshman, Winn as a senior). Keown has been the big surprise for me: I was worried that we were going to have to scramble to get a serviceable center next season, but Keown has been as good as or better than Byrnes. When our line was clicking the best, he was snapping the ball.
As to guards, well, hopefully the season of heavy experience for our two new guards will pay dividends next year and we can return to being the great wall of Lubbock.
With our 2008 or 2005 or 2004 or even 2003 lines, Potts would be a serviceable QB and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

In my opinion...
the turning point in this game was Daniel Howards personal foul hit on Robinson. Stupid move and this among several other penalties gave OSU the edge to win. Dropped passes by Britton and others will have to be addressed. Not sure where we go from here as far as a QB. Defense played a great first half but could finish tackles in the second. Once again I think we had a great chance to win this one but penalties and lack of execution killed us. Don’t hold your breath on Oklahoma.

Don’t rush the freakin’ punter on a 4th down. We don’t succeed with this and always wind up with another personal foul.

I just spoke with one of my supervisor's regarding Jamar Wall's hit.
The man I spoke to played Safety for Mizzou back in the late 1970’s. He told me that when your hands are flailing around like that, your knocked out. Your muscles are on their own and you can occasionally loose control of bodily functions. He said that Wall getting up and walking off the field speaks a lot of the caliber of player he is. Tough is the first word he mentioned. I trust this guy’s thoughts. He’s a tough old man himself.

A year since the slide began at Oklahoma
It’s been a year since the sooners took the air out of our “sails” on the way to a national championship. We owe them big time! Texas eventually recovered from that loss to us last year and is in the hunt this year for the “ring” denied them then. I say like Texas recovered from our loss who’s to say we can’t make some rights out of some “wrongs”. Wouldn’t be awesome to start this “next year” with a win over Oklahoma in the jones this year. Win out get to a bowl and have a champion ship year next. If we are all looking ahead to 2010 being our year then let’s start it off NOW with an ass kicking on OU next week. This is OUR conference not ou’s not texas’s so let’s get behind this team big time…. After all they are pretty much the same championship team for
next year. And we might as well show it NOW!
