Leach Rumors Start Early.....

Once again the annual rumor that Mike Leach is shopping his wares has surfaced, only this time much earlier than in the past. It's widely posted on the web today that Leach and Louisville have a "mutual interest" in each other. Now given his new contract, and the great recruiting being done as we speak, this seems far fetched. That said, each time this rumor has surfaced in the past, fire has followed the smoke. As a fan I am sick and tired of hearing this rumor (true or not), and I think we deserve for our highly paid, widely loved, football coach to take some of the time he has been spending in front the camera, and say once and for all:

"I am Red Raider, I will be a Red Raider for a long long time, quit calling me."

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

I can’t find this widely posted content on the web. I may just be looking in the wrong places, but I’m not finding what you found.

First reported......

by ESPN but the details are premium content requiring “insider” status. It is included in the Bob Stoops to ND article. Also found here:

http://www.footballrumormill.com/2009/11/16/could-louisvilles-next-coach-be-mike-leach/

Highly likely it’s nothing, but in an effort to avoid last offseason debacle, the coach needs to set the record straight, if this gets out of hand again.

Fair enough

I’m with you on thinking it is probably nothing. Seems like every time a university publicly announces they are firing their HC Leach’s name gets dropped.

He has said it multiple times

I don’t know how he can be more clear about being the future coach at Tech. During the contract talk last year he was constantly saying he wanted to stay, even at the end of it he made a big ordeal about saying once and for all he is incredibly happy with Tech and Lubbock. Having a coach who is above average year after year you are going to get rumors of him leaving.

If he were a better interview in front of Athletic Directors, Chancellors and Presidents he would have been gone long ago. It’s his quirkiness that is keeping him at Tech so I root for him constantly to come up with “fat little girlfriend” quotes all that time. As soon as he turns into generic coach and learns how to interview he is GONE!

by allknowing on Nov 16, 2009 10:53 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

??????

This post seems strange. In one breath you say he is “incredibly happy” and “wants to stay”. Then in the next you say he should have been long ago?

by TTUMAR on Nov 16, 2009 11:08 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

TTUMAR

I reread my comment and can’t possibly see where you think I said he should be gone. He is an incredible coach whom I would absolutely love to stay at Tech until he retires.

I did however say if he knew how to interview and was not quirkey like he is he would have been gone long ago. “I root for him constantly to come up with "fat little girlfriend" quotes all the time”. His quirkiness is what keeps him here that is why I root for those comments. With the amount of wins he has locked up and the top 25 program he has built Tech up to be he is a comodity.

@ Kayakar….Suck it!

My question to all of you and the folks in Louisville is “why would you want to hire a coach coming off a perhaps 7-4 or 6-6 season”? The alums and admin will want nothing to do with that. The coaching profession is all about striking while the iron is hot and Leach was firey hot last year, not this year. This year proves that there is much work to be done and why should he leave to start all over again given next year’s team and the incoming recruits. No school wants a coach coming off an average season and has yet to win any conference titles. ALso, why does he go to a Basketball school and a lousy conference? I think this will be a non-issue this year and his name will continue to surface as long as people talk coaching vacanies.

I agree with all the points you made here....

I am just sick of hearing this non-sense.

by TTUMAR on Nov 16, 2009 11:13 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No school wants a coach...

Hey, guess things were different when Mack got hired by UT when he did not have a conference title to his name either, right? Haaaa. Just thought to throw that out there. Nothing to do with the article, and Im anti-horn also. Haha

Just rumor-mongering by media and wish lists by fan bases. only once every 5 years should you actually pay attention to any of these rumors.

and TTUMAR, you can ignore allknowing for now, in this I highly doubt he is allknowing.

by kayakyakr on Nov 16, 2009 11:10 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Any time there is a remote fit for Leach

At some other school, the media jumps all over it and starts the rumor-mill. Geez, the post was from “footballrumormill” to begin with. Who (including coach Leach) wants to waste time constantly denying rumors of a coaching move???
It’s an easy thing for the media b/c they are never called out to verify whether they have verified the information. As long as it doesn’t impact recruiting, then who cares…

by imisswesttexas on Nov 16, 2009 12:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Seriously doubt...

that Mike would consider leaving Tech now. Too many recruits on the horizon not to mention it’s Louisville we’re talking about. That would not be a step down but a giant jump off a cliff. I’m almost certain this is just a rumor and has no meat to it.

by Raider1992 on Nov 16, 2009 12:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree. There are a few programs out there that I may worry about, but not Lousiville. It’s a basketball school. Always has been, always will be.

by Tech92 on Nov 16, 2009 3:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely right.....and wrong...

IMHO, you guys are right on the money as to why this rumor makes litle sense, and thus probably trash. However, the notion that our coaches name is mentioned often, and with wreckless abandon doesn’t fly. The reason his name has come up in the past is because, in fact, he was shopping.

I think the rumor is crap, but if these rumors heat up again, I think two years in a row of it could hurt recruiting, and the coach should move quick to stamp it out.

by TTUMAR on Nov 16, 2009 12:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Just a guess
..because, in fact, he was shopping.

Or maybe he’s considered a very good football coach?

I'm not worthy. Really.

by Campeador on Nov 17, 2009 11:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If he does shop around again, I would be surprised to see Louisville on the list. It would be kind of a step down as far as his career goes.

by Hal B on Nov 16, 2009 5:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Stop reading the Onion!!!

This is not going to happen at Louisville. Leach has a much better talent pool to draw from in Texas.

Is going from Tech to Louisville, a promotion, a lateral move or a demotion. I would guess a lateral at best. So why would he take it.

by ttu_porters on Nov 16, 2009 5:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Please! Come on guys...

Leach is going no where. He’s got one of the best paying contracts in college football today. Is on the verge of putting an exclamation point on what will be 10 years of extraordinary development, strategy, and accomplishment for a program that should always be indebted to him. The double TT and Leach brand are inseparable. He retires a Red Raider the
ultimate “rebel” (pirate)!

by Raiderit on Nov 16, 2009 10:58 PM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

The thing about Leach is nobody knows what makes him tick except his family…I do think he likes Lubbock and Tech quite a bit…but coaches in general…you just never know what their inner thoughts are on the job. We don’t sit around and say stuff about our potential job interests (even if we do like the place we’re at) if it will get back to the boss. I have no doubt coaches are the same way. When a rumor pops up about an opening, they are all but required to say that they love their town and their school and will stay as long as the school will have them.

I’ve yet to hear a coach with a job openly say he doesn’t like the situation he’s in or the town that school is in or that he plans to leave in nine months, so I always take those professions of commitment and job satisfaction with a grain of salt.

But I think Leach is here for at least two more years.

by Tech92 on Nov 17, 2009 8:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why only at least two more years?

by techtom4 on Nov 18, 2009 11:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If not for Leach, we wouldnt have the pirate insignia…. Sad thought

Dodd is a TTU troll.

by kayakyakr on Nov 18, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Dodd is a moron. THis isn’t even journalistic as he has no basis or sources to establish if this is true. He writes the obvious and as I was reading it, it sounded like he’s a year late. Many of these writers just write these hoping they eventually get published for breaking a story. I wonder what he’s going to say should Tech lose the next two—will Leach be a top candidate then?
