Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 11.02.09

Bye Week: I think I needed a break. No game this weekend and as a result, there are no previews to write and I'm sure the pace will be a bit slower on DTN. I've worked on some previews to 2010, both offensive and defensive, with looks at recruiting and past recruiting classes as well as a projected 2-deep for 2010. I'll also have some basketball preview articles to get everyone amped up about that.

Leach Joins the Car Wash: If you don't have a job or have access to the television today, you'll be able to catch Mike Leach on ESPN's car wash, which is essentially Leach appearing on a bunch of ESPN related shows. Here's his tentative schedule:
10:40 am - ESPNU College Football Podcast -- Host: Ivan Maisel :: 11:00 am - College GameDay Tailgate Radio -- Host: Jon Stashower :: 11:15 am - ESPN First Take -- Host: TBA :: 12:20 pm The Herd -- Host: Colin Cowherd :: 12:40 pm - ESPNU - Taping -- Host: TBA :: 1 pm -2:45pm - College Football Live -- Host: TBA --tape Dr. Lou questions-- :: 1:50 pm - 3:15pm ESPN.com Chat :: 2:20 pm - 6pm SportsCenter Taping -- Host: TBA :: 2:40 pm - Scott Van Pelt Show -- Host: Scott Van Pelt :: 2:50 pm - Football Tonight Radio -- Host: TBA :: 3:10 pm - ESPNews -- Host: TBA :: 3:25pm - ESPN.com Football Recruiting section -- Host: TBA
Do you think Leach is more excited about doing an internet chat or talking to Colin Cowherd?
Feel free to post FanPosts or FanShots as new content becomes available.
Bye Week High Note: LAJ's Don Williams writes that the Red Raiders are happy to start the bye week on a win rather than a loss. I wrote yesterday about how RB Baron Batch gave Taylor Potts the credit for checking into the right running plays in the second half and C Shawn Byrnes confirms this again today:
"The quarterbacks just made great run checks,’’ center Shawn Byrnes said. "When he came up to the line and checked into those plays, I thought that was the best plays we could have run. I just called the fronts and got us into a scheme that I thought was best, and it worked out great.’’
And S Julius Howard, who was a captain last week, couldn't decide which was better, the special teams or the defense:
"I’m proud of all three sides of the ball,’’ he said. "Special teams stepped up another week and played. Defense, we brought it this week. And offense, they struggled the first half, but the second half as defensive people, we just told them to ‘keep going, keep going; we’ve got y’all.’ They started rolling, and we were good after that.’’
KU vs. TTU Links: There are still some links to Saturday's win, including LAJ's Don Williams report card . . . TR's dedfischer Post-Mortem and RRR's look at the game . . . OBK Hiphopopotamus' Post-Mortem . . .

Someone will have to brief Colin Cowherd on who Mike Leach and Texas Tech are.
Since he only cares about USC and Florida.

ESPN carwash
Please correct me if I’m wrong on this. Isn’t Tim Griffin responsible for the Big12 blog site?
Seems like it would be “blog-worthy” that one of the 12 HC’s in the league you cover has several scheduled appearances with your co-workers @ ESPN. Maybe not???
No mention of the chat or anything else on his blog. FYI, coach Leach’s chat starts at 1:45 CST.

I'm wrong here
My bad guys. Griffin did mention it inside the weekly power rankings. Still kinda think he doesn’t really like Tech and is biased toward certain big12 teams. Maybe it’s just me…
Anyway, you can click the link above and submit questions prior to the chat.

The comments from Byrnes
Gave me another insight to how the offense works, especially the running game.
A play is called from the sideline.
The qb looks over the defense and decides to use the play as called, modify the play, or check to another play.
The center, calls the blocking scheme.
So, there are multiple decisions and calls made, any of which can be wrong, can be misinterpreted by the players when called, and which must be digested and ready to be executed before the snap. Pretty sophisicated…but it makes sense.

The best part of this is
our team does not stand there look at the sideline waiting for divine guidance from the coach.
More than any other aspect of Coach Leach, I like this show of confidence in his QB and his ability to teach a QB how to read a defense.

Amen
I just hate the OU and OSU scheme where the offense gets set, then they all stand and look over at the sideline for the play call.

agree
I always marvel at their o-line’s ability to not jump offsides in those offenses.

Ditto—Can’t help but believe that ruins the mind-set and momentum of a team. As a fan,
it’s distracting at best. Graham Harrell was awesome at reading the defenses and calling plays at the line. I am sure when we settle on a quarterback they too will do the same.

Great closing line to coach Leach's chat on ESPN
Mike Leach: Red Raider fans are the best. Have kids and convert others.

dedfischer gold
Having married the daughter of the Marlboro Man and having to learn he way of the Cowboy
quickly or die, I will testify that this is brilliance.
Seth Doege couldn’t hit Mark Mangino with a harpoon, if you had him haltered and staked out to a wind farm tower. That sentence gets a little confusing at the end. So for clarification purposes, no, I don’t know how we’re going to get a halter on Mangino, but we may have to jack up a leg to do it and shit can get pretty serious at that point. I’m thinking we’re going to need a hotshot, 2 good horses, a couple of solid picking strings, a 6-foot wide gooseneck w/1 ton and about 70 feet of nylon in case we get in over our heads here. You’ll want to go ahead and cinch up for this affair. I mean don’t be scared to cut that son-of-a-bitch in two because you don’t want your saddle sliding around with a Mangino on the end. Plus, it’s a good way to make your horse’s back sore and he might be apt to quit pulling. I made it 5 paragraphs without a Mangino fat joke and that should speak volumes about my character. Either good or bad.
I am going to cinch up until I cut that SOB in two
