Bowl Hopes?

So our bowl possibilities have been narrowed down considerably after the events of this week.  With the win over OU and with Nebraska winning, that pretty much sealed us to be the 4th pick from the Big 12 and shut out our slim hopes of a Cotton Bowl.  Our realistic possibilities (assuming a win over Baylor) are now about 90% Alamo Bowl and 10% Holiday Bowl.  The only way we make it to the Holiday Bowl are 1) Nebraska beats UT in the Big12 Championship game to earn automatic BCS bid and UT also goes to the BCS as an at-large or 2) if UT wins the Big12 and OSU beats OU and manages to get picked as an at large in the BCS over some other (possibly more deserving in Boise, Iowa, or Penn St.) teams.  I'm thinking Alamo Bowl, but San Diego would look pretty damn good after some of the adversities the team has faced this year.

As far as an opponent, the Alamo Bowl would see either Northwestern or Wisconsin I think.  In the Holiday Bowl, I'm guessing Oregon State or Stanford are in the best position.  If I'm off and you have better ideas, let me know.

Either can be a nice springboard into next year with plenty of talent returning and some new confidence in Nick, Sticks, Karam, Doege, or whoever else wants to step up and take the starting QB job.  It will be sad to see some of the guys gone, especially those that have really been leaders and stepped up like Jamar Wall, Brandon Sharpe, Brandon Carter, Marlon Williams and Winn, Shawn Byrnes, Daniel Howard, and Rajon Henly, but our younger guys have really showed a lot of potential this year.

Oh, and congratulations to our new all-time winningest coach!  Aaaargghh!!

What makes you think...

Nebraska beats Colorado @ Colorado? Final home game for the Buffs… if they can play OSU close on the road, I don’t see why they can’t give Nebraska a tough fight.

If that happens, Nebraska’s regular season Big12 record would be 5-3 i.e. same as us (assuming we beat Baylor) and the H2H advantage sends us to the Holiday bowl.

Actually a Neb loss in the Big 12 CG will mean 5-4 so H2H doesn’t even matter. A Neb win would send them to a Fiesta bowl anyway so if Colorado beats Neb, Holiday bowl guaranteed for us.

They have already clinched the north, and I just assumed being north division winner, bigger name and traditional power, and fans that are known for traveling anywhere that the holiday would pick them over us. The head to head SHOULD count, but these are bowl reps who choose based on money and what they perceive as best for their bowl.

But that would be nice if colorado beat them. Tech would have a very legitimate gripe to leapfrog them in the pecking order, especially if UT blew them out in the championship game.

I want the Holiday Bowl with USC or some other ass hat from the Pac10.

sorry i want usc to face utah in vegas bowl. everybody wants a crack at pete carroll and matt barkley's azz

last time utah played usc in vegas bowl they won 10-6. usc is so hated across the country. even in their own conference. harbaugh coach of stanford went for a two point coversion when they were up by 4td’s i guarantee you when arizona plays them they will run up the score if they can. coach of zona is mike stoops who is brother of bob at okie. i don’t think stoops has forgotten usc beating his sooner team 55-19.

yes i am obsessive, obnoxious, in your face and all about covering the spread. those are my good qualities.

My money is on the Alamo Bowl.

Alamo Bowl is more realistic than the Holiday

but if there was ever a year to take a crack at USC, this would be it

by mojavereject on Nov 22, 2009 12:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Alamo is most likely.

Possible is the Cotton if: Nebraska loses to colorado and gets blown out by texas and OSU makes it into the BCS. 1%.

Holiday is a possibility if: Nebraska gets blown out and OSU doesn’t make a BCS bowl or if OSU makes a BCS bowl. 9%

I honestly don’t think the holiday will pick us over Nebraska, reportedly they’re in love with nebraska no matter what. The question is if the Cotton would be willing to take a TTU team a second year in a row over a nebraska.

I think Alamo here we come but that’s not bad considering how far we came this season and it being somewhat local. Party on the river walk.

Wisc is the spot right now, but if Big 10 gets 2 in the BCS, then it will likely fall to northwestern again. MSU and Minnesota, the other two bowl eligible teams are 6-6 to Northwestern’s 8-4.

Maybe Michigan State?

Alamo Bowl…vs. Northwestern, maybe, if Wisc or MSU are bypassed. That would be a snoozer.

Big 10 may send two to the BCS, though I would be pretty surprised if Iowa makes it. FWIW, this is the final year the Big 10 has a tie in with the Alamo Bowl. In 2010, the PAC-10 takes their place. The Big XII will continue on.

Not Appealing!

None of these match ups look appealing. Got my fingers crossed for the Holiday Bowl.

I'm with you ...

Also an ex-tramp, Extramp83 – can I just advise – with all respect – I admire and honor the sentiment your signature intends, but I think you mean to say “clothe”, not cloth. All the best!

Doesn’t UT going to the national championship not cost the big 12 its auto in the fiesta? and thefore the second place team goes automatically?

by logan5555 on Nov 23, 2009 9:27 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

No. the Fiesta is supposed to give the Big 12 a hard look for its replacement, but it is not required to take a Big 12 team (especially in this crappy year for the conference). Depending on what OSU does this week against OU will probably be the determining factor. If they lose, there is no way the fiesta takes them. If they win, it is down to OSU, Boise St., Iowa, or maybe even Penn St, just depending on who wins certain games and how the final polls end up.

But, no, the BCS is only required to pick one Big12 school overall. If they make the championship game, then that is technically enough.

by pcrawttu on Nov 23, 2009 10:23 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

an Iowa or a PSU are two teams that are much more appealing than okie light. Those two teams are known to travel far and wide and en-mass.

Simplified Scenario

1. If Nebraska beats Texas, Nebraska would go to the Fiesta but Texas would still receive an at-large bid, thus OSU goes to the Cotton and we go to the Holiday.

2. If OSU beats Oklahoma (and Texas plays for the Nat’l championship) they will most-likely get an at-large bid. OSU goes to a BCS bowl, Nebraska would go to the Cotton, we go to the Holiday.

Either scenario is possible (#2 moreso than the first) but I think that gives us around a 60-40 chance that we’ll be in the Holiday. As far as who we would play in the Holiday Bowl, here are the biggest scenarios:

1. If Oregon loses to Oregon State, State would go to the Rose Bowl, meaning Oregon would play us as the #2 team in the Pac 10.

2. If Oregon wins, it becomes a free-for-all. If USC and Stanford win their games on Saturday as well, there would be a 5-team tie for second place between OSU, Arizona, Cal, Stanford, and USC. And it would be all up to the Holiday Bowl to decide. I bet anyone a million bucks they would pick USC.

Let's hug it out, bitch.
Suck It, UT.

I would love Oregon or USC. With Oregon, its the most fashionable game ever with both team’s uniforms on the field at the same time. And USC….. well hell its USC.

Holiday vs USC is a dream matchup

Anyone who went to the ’95 Cotton Bowl should be rooting for this game. That was a freaking beatdown by USC and Keyshawn Johnson (CB record 222 yrds on 12 catches!).
Game summary here: http://www.mmbolding.com/bowls/Cotton_1995.htm

I was still there when Mitchell scored the final TD as time expired. Long day, but I didn’t give a damn. We were in the Cotton Bowl for the first time in 50+ years!!!

Would love to get a chance to get a little payback for that freaking cold day at the fair grounds.

I just bought Alamo Bowl tickets. It’s looking very likely that that’s where we go. If not, well, i can resell at face.

sitting disturbingly close to the band. I hope that’s not too bad.
