Q. How do you think Nick played today? Give us a little background on that?
COACH LEACH: I thought Nick played really well. I never had the opportunity to meet a guy named Nick Reed who was a linebacker for Kansas. And I always felt like he personified what a football player is and what a football player should be. I'd actual lying like to have a picture of Nick Reed. But anyway. We decided as Potts was going through his tough times, we decided all of our players, we'd like them to be more like Nick and led by Nick would be even better. We figured it wouldn't hurt us to have a Nick, so now we do.

Q. Is he going to keep that name on his jersey the rest of the season, Nick?
COACH LEACH: Yes, I would think so. I would think so, and it was his idea, too, while we're on the subject because I'm going to get blamed for this. I guarantee you. As the expression on his relatives and his girlfriend's face changes, on some level I'm going to get blamed for this. But for the record, it was his idea to have it on the jersey. I named him Nick.

Awesome!

It he makes it in the NFL I wonder if it will still say Nick? Maybe somebody should do a writeup or an article on Nick Reed. I don’t have a clue about the guy as of right now……

The only rememberance of Nick Reed

is back in 2004, Texas was playing KU in Lawrence.

4th and 18. We’re losing. 4th quarter. Almost no time left.

Vince young runs for 22 yards and absolutely jukes Nick Reed to get the 1st down and set up the game winning pass. Actually “juke” doesn’t do it justice. But yeah, Nick is a stand up guy and the leader on an abysmal KU team, that sadly, almost beat Texas that week.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

Watched the game yesterday and was curious for an explanation....

very interesting what it was. Another note, Nick Reid was one of the most vocal former players this week coming out in support of Mark Mangino with the recent attacks he’s come under. Nick Reid was a standup guy and a big overachiever.

Probably reading too much into this, but it almost seems like a little show of support by Mike Leach for his former colleague.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

I see the correlation

Leach and Mangino have a lot of respect for each other. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

IMHO, if the Kansas alums are just trying to drum up a reason to get rid of Mangino, they’re making a huge mistake.

I'm not worthy. Really.

I remember watching the Orange Bowl that year with envy

I couldn’t help but think at the time how well coached KU was playing that night.

Somehow, it seemed Mangino had managed to make his players perform above they’re normal abilities.

A rare thing indeed.

It seems Bill Belichick is a Romer disciple as well.

Concerning "Nick"

It well may have been Leach’s way of supporting, in some way, his friend, Mangino. With the publicity concerning the big coach really blowing things up, I must say something. I don’t know how many of you guys know anything about the former baseball coach at Monterey High School in Lubbock. He was one of the strictest and demanding coaches I have known, with many players being good enough to be good to excellent players in college and some even in the pros. There were several players who could not take to his coaching methods, which were substantial enough to produce many district championships and 4 or 5 state championships. Those players left the team, leaving behind a core of players that were very loyal and responsive to Bobby Moegle’s teaching and coaching methods. They were all instrumental in giving him an amazing celebrational party upon his retirement. I am sure Mangino may even achieve such accolades from former players. While he is maybe a bit over the line, we must remember these players should be tough enough to withstand any verbal abuse, which is a part of coaching—-always has been, always will be. Mike Leach knows of Mangino’s coaching abilities and practices and would not offer support if he did not understand and agree that they were well within the limits acceptable for coaches (although, I don’t think it is necessarily Mike’s way to coach). So, for me, all this is just a result of the softer player types being produced by the high schools now. The real players go out and play hard and do not voice such dribble. Let us all get past this and look forward to some future great football in the Big-12 from Texas Tech and, hopefully from Kansas with the present coaches still employed at their universities of choice.

Since it is Leach quoted above who is explaining what and who he meant

not sure how the DMN could surmise it was a totally different person. Maybe they should have actually asked Mike Leach instead.

The DMN

would have to have a reporter at the game to do that and they don’t. They use the articles from the FWST. That being said, I think we should cut Dwain Price some slack as he writes more about TT than anyone else outside of Lubbock.
