Leach Welker Article
You should go read the entire article, but here is my favorite quote from it.
On his first reaction to Welker, the recruit: “Honestly, what did I think when I first saw him? Short and slow. OK, then when I put the film on the first play, there’s play after play after play after play. ‘Oh man, that’s a great play. Oh, that’s a great play. Look at that play. …’ Well this is just a great high school football player. That means a guy that tries really hard but probably can’t make the transition to college. Then we get to this playoff games… When we first started watching, I thought it was a highlight tape. I’m not exaggerating, this is just the best of my recollection… He picks two balls and brings them back for touchdowns. He brought one or two (kicks) backs, had some long punt returns, had like 13 tackles, has 60 yards rushing, and had probably 220 yards receiving. Then, at the end, kicked like a 52-yard field goal to win it. That really happened. I saw it…”
It would seem Wes runs a 4.8 40... show me anyone who's covered him and I'll show you someone who would argue that number.

My favorite football player. There is only one welker. Amendola is trying to do an impression though with the Rams. I still hear chants of “welker, welker welker” in my head when we have a guy go back for a punt return.

His life
Should be a movie. Kinda like the movie Rudy….except Welker broke NCAA records and started in the Super Bowl.
by Wreck Em on Nov 24, 2009 3:55 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
yeah he is like Rudy but actually really good. I can’t wait for the Welker movie. I just wish he had gone to a superbowl with the Cowboys instead of the Pats. I hate the Pats.

In my top 5 Tech players of all time
Love it. Thanks for sharing. I remember the Welker chants at the Baylor game his Sr year. Great stuff.
Time and time again he simply made plays when we most needed them. If he runs a 4.8 40, then it must go down to a 4.4 when he puts his pads on. Hard to explain, but we’ve all seen him outrun defenders when you would never think he could…
I probably enjoy watching him block and mix it up more than I do watching him catch passes. Great, great downfield blocker!!!

A television commentator recently called him the second best blocker in the league out of all receivers behind Hines Ward. That’s pretty lofty praise! I will never forget when he took the team on his shoulders and refused to let them lose to the Aggies.
I once rode the commuter bus with him but was too starstruck to speak.

I breifly stood next to him at the airport when congratulating the team for some victory I can’t remember. He really was the size they say he is.
And speaking of blocking do you guys remember when he was in Miami and called for a fair catch on a punt that was going into the endzone and the lit up the defender coming to down the ball. It was one of his first years in the leauge and the Miami fans fell in love with him right there. Too bad they only cared about measurables down there.

Either the answer is no because there will never be another WW, or someone with a little different style will have similar results. How about Zoo?

Comparisons
One of the amazing things about Welker is that the whole NFL has started comparing any and all slot receivers to him. What separates him from most, if not all of them is what Leach recognized: his ability to read and adjust instantly regardless of direction he is going. He and Crabs have that one intangible of being able to catch any pass thrown close to them, then knowing exactly what move to make once the catch is made, resulting in maximum results after the catch few, if any can match. To be able to follow their careers is going to be great. There will never be another like either one, with each possessing special talent rarely seen. Those of you who have seen as much Tech football as I have (since the late 50’s) knows what I am talking about. Tech has had some great players, some being on bad teams, but Welker and Crabtree will always be considered at the top of that list.

Who is faster?
Welker or Zoo? Just curious. .
by taraebeth on Nov 24, 2009 10:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
ummmmm
shouldnt the question be, “welker or torres?”
and the criteria can be anything you want: route running (welker my have that one), hands, etc…
but BOTH these guys (Zoo or Torres) have three more years to improve….THAT blows my mind!!!

Zou > Torres > Welker in straight line speed.
Zou is more of a welker-type of receiver than Torres is. From that time period Torres is more like Mickey Peters except faster.
If Cornelius Douglas could keep his head on straight, he’d be the most welkerish of the bunch we have right now, but it seems like he’s always in trouble for something. Haven’t really heard much about true freshman receiver EJ Celestie, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find him contributing on gameday next year, just going by his highlight film.
It’s pretty amazing the breadth of receiver types we have represented on the up-and-coming roster right now.

There will never be another Welker.
I am just glad that he did not listen when people told him he was just a slow little white boy. There are a lot of slow little white boys out there that give up because of that and regret it the rest of their life.

If welker doesnt make the pro-bowl

I love our place
In football as the team that does more with less. Zack was too short, WW was too slow and small, Sammy wasn’t on the radar and now the NFL is giving Danny and the like a chance. We have a happy chip on our shoulder and I love it

Meanwhile
Ramirez and McBath both played today. Ramirez and Vasquez both starters, Joselio Hanson gets alot of reps at Philly in their nickel package. Sammy Morris is supposed to be healthy to play this week or next. Would ne sweet to see him Mon vs. N O Saints.
