Five Reasons Texas Tech Will Lose :: Baylor Bears Edition

This weekly feature considers five reasons why Texas Tech will win and five reasons Texas Tech will lose to each opponent. Check back tomorrow for "Five Reasons Texas Tech Will Win :: Baylor Bears Edition". ----- Ed. Note:  I really had to hurry to get these up this morning.  Apologies in advance for the quality.

Reason #1 :: Bowl Game: This is Baylor's finale for the year and it's only fitting that this is the #1 reason. It's a reason that the most of Texas Tech fans have expressed concern about since the TAMU loss and I still think there's a trust issue with this team. After sky-high wins, this version of the Red Raiders may be prone to letting press-clippings, girlfriends and other things let them know how great they are. There's plenty of talent on Baylor's squad and to discount Baylor because they are Baylor would be a huge mistake.

Star-divide

Reason #2 :: Short and Sweet: QB Nick Florence is a true freshman and he's not playing as bad as you would expect. Florence is a dink and dump sort of passer and he's not the type that likes to throw the ball deep. Florence is 7th in the conference in passing, again as a true freshman, and it will be interesting to see how Ruffin McNeill matches up with Florence in that there is no doubt that McNeill will play the bend-but-do-not-break methodology for this game.

Reason #3 :: Play Making Defense: Most of Baylor's opponents know about LB Joe Pawelek and S Jordan Lake. Both are seniors, Pawelek has 97 tackles (leads team), 2.5 sacks (2nd on team), and 4 TFL (3rd on team), while Lake has 83 tackles (2nd on team). You never underestimate the player that is playing his final collegiate game and is playing for pride. A little momentum could be dangerous thing for Texas Tech and both Pawelek and Lake are momentum makers.

Reason #4 :: Briles Knows Leach: This didn't help Bob Stoops last week, in part because I think Leach changed some things up this week, but there may not be a coach that knows Leach better than Art Briles and I think it showed last year. Of course, last year, QB Robert Griffin led the Baylor offense, which rushed for 229 yards total, while Griffin accounted for 99 yards and 2 TD's on the ground and Jay Finley ran for 105 yards on 10 carries. I know that Baylor lost LT Jason Smith, and it's been a huge loss for Baylor, but the Bears are capable and I think they are even more capable with Briles at the helm.

Reason #5 :: Shutting Down the Spread: I'm still somewhat shocked when I read the score and some of the status, but with Florence in charge, the Bears took down the Missouri Tigers, at Missouri. The subject line is a bit mis-leading in that Baylor really didn't shut down Mizzou, as QB Blaine Gabbert threw for 468 yards and 2 TD's, but the Baylor defense did register 4 sacks for the game and limited the Mizzou running game to 10 yards . . . for the day. The Tigers didn't seem to get their ground game going, and perhaps that's the key for the Red Raiders. Continue to run the ball, where Baylor is giving up 185 yards a game overall, but 230 in losses and only 108 in wins.

Rushing

It all depends for Baylor whom they are playing how well the rush defense is. Against Tech, who CAN rush it as well as anyone if they really want to, this should be the difference maker. I feel that Tech should be able to get, playing their regular game, about 150 yards on the ground, with the backs also getting another 50-85 through the air. I know Baylor has improved over the year, but so has Tech. The ONLY problem for Tech, as everyone is aware-including the coaches-not sure about the players-is complacency towards a relatively weak Baylor team. If there is anything the coachs should concentrate on in preparing for the Bears, it is complacency. Say some “mean” things and get the team to come out “nasty”.

Don't be too mean

Or Gerald will have to investigate Mike. Mangino reference anyone?

Easy there, Jeff

Just funnin’. It is like Leach said when asked about the Kansas/Mangino thing. As I noted about that on another posting, Mike Leach does not resort to that style, but I am sure he doesn’t sugar-coat anything either. The Tech players will, I hope, be ready for the Bears and play well, resulting in a comparatively easy win. But, they do need to be ready, and a little “encouragement” from the coaches should get them there. GO TECH!

Reason #4 somewhat valid...but look deeper

I would agree that Briles knows Leach and Tech’s scheme as well as anyone. However, this may not be as much of an issue as you would think.

We’ve heard it often that Tech’s offense isn’t overly technical in terms of plays and schemes. We do use multiple formations and have incorportated a guy in motion some.

The difference here is you have to have the athletes to defend the multiple play-makers who get the ball. And even though Briles can communicate what we will try to do against them, I just don’t think they have the athletes to match up. They do have some outstanding defensive players, but not on the level of Nebraska or OU.

If we play our game with intensity and focus, we’ll be fine.

That’s true…we don’t out “athlete” many teams in the BXII South, but Baylor is one.

I Doubt That Briles Knows More than Stoops

If the offense is really as simple as we read. How much more could there be ??? LOL !!

The Air Raid has been around long enough for it to be known, there is a lot of film available from the past and from this year.

For the Air Raid to be effective, it is more a matter of execution than anything else. That has been what has kept us frustrated all season with the offense.

There may be some excuses, but at this point there are no reasons for Baylor to beat TTU come Saturday.

My only concern

is this is another game like A&M where we are supposed to win. I’m not too worried seeing what Tech did last weekend to OU but stranger things have happened. In the end I have a hard time believing Baylor stays in this one past the first quarter. Our offense is starting to click and our defense is way too much for these guys.

Tech will show up. a&m games DO NOT happen Twice in one season, period! and Tech WILL rush for 150+ this week. And our defense has found it’s happy place! They are NO LONGER looked at as our weakest link, and they have taken that opportunity/challange and proved themselves. line is 20.5, with an ove under @ 58. Don’t know if Tech will cover but i would expect them to be responsible for at least 42 of the 58 points!!!

point of information

I don’t know if you can consider Florence a ‘true’ freshman, he greyshirted, signing in 2008, but didn’t arrive on campus until last Spring, and went through Spring Practice.

I hate that Baylor lost their QB (except for when they play us.)

The expectations were high for them…….that being 4th in the Big XII but still. It’s much better than bein the cellar dweller of the conference each and every year.
