Preview and Game Day Thread :: Samford Bulldogs vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Samford Bulldogs at Texas Tech Red Raiders, Nov 28, 2009 3:30 PM CST

INFORMATION: Detail
OPPONENT: Samford Bulldogs (1-4, 0-0)
LOCATION: United Spirit Arena :: Lubbock, TX
DATE: November 24, 2009
TIME: 3:30 p.m. CST
TV: None
RADIO: Affiliates
GAME CAST: Fox Sports

Game Day Stat:

Samford: The Bulldogs are a defensive oriented team, allowing only 62.8 points a game and scoring only 60.6 points a game. It appears that Samford is going to try their darndest to keep this a low-scoring scoring affair. Samford also shoots remarkably well from the field with a eFT% of 56.4%, but they also allow opponents to shoot 52.1%.

Texas Tech: Texas tech has only allowed opponents to shoot 80 3-point shots all year, while Samford has already taken 106 in 5 games. I'm thinking that the Red Raiders will need to protect the 3-point line defensively and let Darko and Lew battle on their own inside.

Players Focus:

Samford: Senior G Trey Montgomery leads his team in scoring (14.0), 2nd in rebounds (4.4) and 1st in assists (3.0). Montgomery also gets to the line more than any other Bulldog and I'm very interested in how Texas Tech matches up with Montgomery as I think Leach will lean on G David Tairu to check him.

Texas Tech: There are 5 players scoring in double-figures for Texas Tech and on one hand, that's refreshing in that there's not one player that the team depends upon, but over the course of this young season, SF Mike Singletary, in his last 2 games, has scored 6 and 9 points. If Singletary is going to be this team's leader then he needs to find a way to get the ball in the bucket and take advantage of his opponent each and every game.

Needs Repair

Samford: The Bulldogs have played a tough schedule thus far, #55 in terms of strength of schedule, and statistically speaking, their numbers aren't too bad. Samford lost to Texas A&M 68-49 last week and this is the first common opponent that I've found and perhaps the Bulldogs will be a good measuring stick for the future.

Texas Tech: Rebounds again. I won't go so far as to say that the rebounding performance against SFA was pathetic, but it's not good and it must get better. This team was out-rebounded by 4 and that trend really needs to stop.

GO RAIDERS . . .

I am looking for assists from the pg spot, and almost no shots from the 3 line.

Team motion offense on offense and team defense, with the defense leading the way for transition basketball and points from this aspect of the game. When the dogs go into their zone defense, movement with cuts through their zones…lots and lots and lots.

TO in TTU’s favor.

Rebounds in TTU’s favor.

Good shooting from the free throw line.

Good shot selection from the field…high percentage shots.

Roberson had 9 assists !! And good scoring…I think he left something on the table on defense, he had no fouls.

Cohadarivec did not show on the stats page. ??

4 players scored in double figures !!!

Rebounds 32 – 17 !!!

Almost 55% scoring percentage !!! Implies taking good shots !!!

Singletary’s 4 TO’s makes one blemish on an otherwise pretty good stat line….4 fouls imply that he was in there.

Better than 80% from the free throw line, nice !!

I am ready for this team to take on a more challenging opponent, I think they would benefit.

small lineup

it looks like darko and lew didn’t see much action. It looks like Pat went with a smaller lineup.

Minutes and production

First, I want to thank the coaches and players for the work they have done, which we all enjoy. Congratulations on the season so far. (I would think that few prognosticators would have pegged this team to be undefeated at this point.

Then I want to thank Tall Mike for his astute observations. I had very little chance at the computer yesterday and was much helped by his synopsis.

Now that I have had time to digest the stats, I have some comments as well.

Mr. Quatroux noted that Coach P. Knight used a short lineup. Mr. Singletary had four fouls and only played 20 minutes. (Mr. Singletary and Mr. Cohadarevic had 12 rebounds in only 29 total minutes; that is not bad.) Five players played more than 20 minutes so, if that is the normal team, we were 6’7", 6’6", 6’3", 6’1", and 5’10". (I need not add to what Mr. Quatroux noted.) Mr. Knight, this year, is coaching more like his father did. The best players play, regardless of position. If this team is to get taller, then those players must perform.

This brings me to some of the questions for which I have no answer. Did Mr. Cohadarevic get injured? If not, why was he yanked? He had four rebounds in only nine minutes of play, so he had to be hustling. He only took one shot. Somebody help me here.

Mr. Lewandowski, Mr. Dunn, and Mr. Ray played only one (mop up) minute each. They will get their playing time the old fashioned way; they will earn it, soon I hope. If anybody knows why they haven’t been playing more, I would be thankful for any info.

Now we get a ranked Washington team. They will certainly be our best test to date. I, for one, am looking for good things from this team.

Respectfully,

Paul M. Simons

Postscript: Where are the basketball fans? It seems that (while I love the football news on this site) there has been very little comment on the basketball team. As Tall Mike astutely observed last year, I am a “Region Rat” from the Indiana shore of Lake Michigan. I am in an information desert. Any information you give about the basketball team would be enjoyed as if it were double dessert.

LOL ! A Ranked Washington Team May Be More Than I Was Thinking !!

It will be significant to play at home. The game is scheduled for ESPN2, so maybe some of us will be able to see the way the team is playing rather than rely on little dabs of information here and there.

TV

I appreciate RaiderVision on my AT&T U-Verse as well as the Pat Knight Show. I am guessing they will cover more games once conference play starts. My problem is that I have only managed to see one game and the Raider Vision picture quality is so bad that I have no understanding of faces and names. My TTU BB knowledge sat on the bench after March and I look forward to some clear ESPN camerawork to get me back in the game.

I hope to make the TCU game on 12/8. They get excited about playing Tech in every sport. There’s something funny about a sea of murple (man-purple) shirts that say “Beat Tech”.

Team Defense

I noticed that many who coment on this site are loyal fans that can’t get to the games do to distance from Lubbock. I am a season ticket holder and have made it to all, but one game thus far.

The reason Tech played a smaller group of players against Samford is that Samford was playing a constant switching, screening offense and Tech’s taller, but slower, players were having troubles keeping up.

Pat Knight used a quicker lineup who, as I saw it, did a very good job of recognizing the screens and switching off one player and on to another. Samford had trouble getting the open shots close to the basket or open 3’s when Tech went smaller. Darko played fairly good while he was in, but got a little out of position on defense at times.

It’s really great to have good athletes on this team. It gives the coach more options against the different teams we meet. The Washington game will be a tough one.
