Around SBN: Top Ten College Football Recruits for 2013

A couple of things:

I'm sick of Nick throwing side armed and off his back foot, were not going to have any bit of decent success next year if he is our starter and he continues to do so. I hope sticks starts next year, no matter what.

I think Leach is the worse challenger “official challenge” in college football. I don’t think he has won a single challenge since that rule was put in place…has anyone?

Alamo bowl, here we come…and to be honest I’m glad were going to the Alamo rather then the holiday because I will be able to go, and we will have a much better showing in San Antonio then in San Diego.

I'm thinking....

Its gonna be Wisconsin. I know they’ve the same Big Ten record as Northwestern and lost to them H2H but Northwestern was already invited last year. I think Iowa and Ohio State go to BCS bowls and a very good Wisky team plays us in the Alamo bowl. All 3 of their losses have been conf losses and the final score against tOSU does not do them justice. It was sa much closer game than 31-13. Their remaining two losses are by a combined 12 points.

This is a GOOD team and we better watch out. Win and meh… so you beat a Big Ten team. Lose and we put cover our faces with bags next day. Not much to gain here except a decent 9-4 finish to start the next pre-season ranked.

Oh and +1 for Sticks starting. Our Oline seems to be gelling… combine tht with Sticks and the Air Raid is back!

A few weeks ago

not a single challenge had gone to the coach that asked for the review. I beleive there has been one since then and that’s it. Maybe I misunderstood the analyst that gave the stat, but one in all of football makes Leach’s 0 for whatever look just fine.

I see Potts finishing the season even if Sticks is healthy for a bowl game. I think LEach will save a QB battle for the offseason after all the problems this year.

challenges

I just see leach as wasting our timeouts for a stupid challenge! in the baylor game, we ended up not needing another timeout. however, i know for sure that plenty of times in the past we have wasted timeouts because of leachs bonehead chalenges.

It will be Michigan State

The Big 10 message boards say it will be Michigan State. Regardless are we going to win the bowl game with Potts at QB? Leach is too stubborn to overrule his decision and start with Sticks. For that matter I don’t even think he will go with Sticks next season. I am mentally preparing to suffer with two more years of Potts.

by jef on Nov 29, 2009 10:43 AM CST reply actions

1 more year.

Here’s the problem with Potts. Sidearm throws and throwing off his back foot aside, when he throws the ball, there is virtually no chance for YAC yards. That’s the bread and butter of this offense. Take the YAC away and we’re just mediocre. Sticks was great because he could make all the underneath throws and saw the open man. Potts doesn’t roll out of the pocket. Sticks does. His ability to extend the play allows for our receivers (who I think are the best all-around receiving corp in the nation) to get open for a 20+ yard gain. Sticks makes plays. Leach can’t not start him, because he had a bad game against a fired up OSU when he had screws in his ankle. That’s not fair.

The Baylor game...

Did show Potts scrabble a bit. It surprised the hell outta me to tell you the truth when Potts did roll out… saw it atleast 3 times during the game. Plus looks like he is finally stepping up when the pocket is collapsing. Saw a different type of Potts under pressure this time around, plus just one INT (yes, that one was off his backfoot). He looks like he is finally coming around with this offense. He gets the ball out of his hands quickly, he looks damn good. Takes longer than 3 seconds, he looks uncomfortable and looking just to get rid of the ball causing mistakes… which actually makes me nervous when he looks antsy in the pocket.

Plus side… Defense is looking damn good. Ruff had second half adjustments in this one… very good. You got to remember, Coach Briles had been under Coach Leach for a little while… him and Coach Sumlin (from Houston) understand quite well how to cover for this type of offensive scheme. The offense did not produce all that well in the Houston game and the Baylor game for that same reason. Just glad the D was there this season, or we would not be looking at an 8-4 season, with 3 of those losses coming by an average of 6 points per loss.

Good luck against whatever BIG 10 team they meet in the Alamo Bowl. Going to be buying tickets soon.

WRECK EM TECH!!!

I'm not sold...

The first half was atrocious. Sure, on 3rd and goal we should have gotten a pass interference call, but still…Potts looked uncomfortable except for the two TD drives. He rolled out of the pocket 3 times. If we want to make it to a BCS bowl, we have to demand more from our QB. His success dictates our record. Personally, I saw a huge drop off from the OU game. Even if you only compare the second half of this game. Sticks needs to start.

that INT off his back foot

was a bad read to begin with. I think it would have been a pick with perfect form.

by kevinkinsler on Nov 29, 2009 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

There is a problem

I probably agree that Potts is improving, but is it a wise decision to give more time to Potts so he can improve from being a terrible QB to a mediocre QB who can barely run an offense, when we have other excellent QBs waiting on the wings for a chance? Heck even Doege made better throws and with more reps he will probably better than Potts, Sticks is light years ahead, so the question is do we waste more time with Potts? I mean it’s not about seeing how successful we can make Potts, I think it’s about how successful we want to see Texas Tech and I think we will see a more successful Tech without Potts in the line up.

by jef on Nov 29, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Potts has played what….9 1/2 of our games this season? The mistakes we saw against Baylor are the same mistakes we saw against North Dakota in week one. He played better against OU, but he still threw behind people, still threw an INT into coverage, and still missed wide open receivers (either just missed them or didn’t see them because he didn’t go through his progressions). I don’t wnat to waste another season just to see if he can eliminate some basic flaws he should have outgrown in high school.

by TechFirst on Nov 30, 2009 5:57 AM CST up reply actions

Potts

Still don’t think he’s making good reads. He threw several extremely questionable ones yesterday. He also has accuracy problems — when we have guys running 3 yards ahead of their defenders and he just can’t get the ball in the right place, it’s not the receiver’s fault. He looked better under pressure.

He can improve his ability to read and he can get some serious practice in for the accuracy problems. However, him suddenly getting uncomfortable and start snowballing mistakes and bad throws is a mental thing he needs to get over himself. Defenses try to make our QB uncomfortable, its pretty much the best chance they have at beating our passing game. So our QBs need to counter by being pretty unflappable. Throwing off his back foot seems like something someone should’ve coached out of him already, and I don’t know how big a deal it is for Leach or Potts at this point.

We beat Baylor by scoring TDs on drives of less than 50 yards. Our offense is our big highlight, but without interceptions and big kick returns against Baylor we probably don’t win. Both TDs were on really short fields. No long TD drives whatsoever.

The INT was a bad read to begin with because the receiver was doubled. However the reason it got intercepted was because it was underthrown, which was probably because he threw it off his back foot.

potts

throwing side armed and off your back foot is what a quarterback learns in middle school!

by chad0454 on Nov 29, 2009 2:14 PM CST reply actions

What percentage of Pott’s INTs have been thrown in the red zone? I wish there were a stat for that.

All season long, he gets close, gets excited and forces it. He threw two against North Dakota inside the 20 if I remember right, and he was in that same area when threw the INT yesterday.

Harrell

With the way things have turned out of Harrell, would it be a bad idea If leach hired Graham as a QB’s coach?I am told by friends that watched the game Tech was dissed by ESPN game day (open mouth) Fowler.Big 12 Live was dissing Leach about the"NICK" thing with Potts.

Anyway I had a blast.I am still in Dallas SHOPPING with family..HELL SHOOT ME!!!! How many times can a person look at an item?Put the damn thing in a cart and lets go!It does look like the Alamo bowl so come on we need a great showing there also.leach will have this all worked out.I think the “SALT” in the wounds- Houston,A&M and the illegal(no flag thrown) hit on Potts in the Texas ame still makes me have to run another mile or another 15 reps on the bars.
I was one that predicted a one or two loss year.An I ain’t eatin no crow because we should be.No ban waggon here just a RED RAIDER who wants more. That should not make me bad.Let’s get to San Antonio and fill the stands.

espn dameday

dont they have a right to diss tech? were are supposed to have the best throwing quarterback in the nation and he’s throwing off his back foot, he has less then 3k yards, we lost to a&m, we switched the name on his jersey because for some reason we could keep the same quarterback in the game but different letters he would become a different quarterback? if another school did this would’nt we make fun of them too?

by chad0454 on Nov 29, 2009 5:16 PM CST up reply actions

Does anyone have any idea if the Alamo Bowl would pass on Tech and take OU? OU is coming off a big win, they are a big name who played in the National Championship game last year, supposedly travel well, etc.

I’m a little worried about this. I know Tech has a better recored and won the H2H, but that doesn’t matter in the bowl selection process.

by pcrawttu on Nov 29, 2009 11:28 PM CST reply actions

bowl selection

actually, that does matter a lot. I dont have any doubt where we are headed.

Potts is still the guy

Is he a work in progress?
You bet, so is every first year QB in this system.
Does he need to be much better next year?
You bet, I think he will be with a healthy Sicks pushing him.

VIVA LA FIGA!

by bmaxw on Nov 29, 2009 11:32 PM CST reply actions

Most first year tech QB’s improve drastically over the course of that year, Potts didnt. He jacked around during warm ups in dallas, then started terribly. I have yet to see him hit a receiver in stride. Zou would have had AT LEAST two more TD’s if he wouldnt have had to back track or leap for the ball when he was wide open. Potts still has trouble throwing the screen AND rifles a five yard pass, I realize that sometimes you have to, but not every single throw. Touch my friends, touch. And as mentioned above, yes he rolled out 3 times, shocked me. Problem is, after he rolled out, he also freaked out and threw middle school looking passes.

by RdrPwr on Nov 30, 2009 12:28 AM CST up reply actions

Actually,

Sheffield was never a work in progress, which makes him unique from every QB we have ever had. There was never a break-in period for him…he came in right away and lit it up starting with UNM and then against K-state and Neb. This alone should be enough for him to be the starter next year…the kid has got serious skill. How anyone could still want Potts to start next year absolutely baffles me.

by techtom4 on Nov 30, 2009 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

MIssing wideopen deep receivers......

5 or more times this year Nick has missed wideopen deep receivers and that still seems to be a real concern. I know he will miss some but against Baylor there was twice he had receivers running free near the Endzone wideopen and never even looked @ them. I also agree that if he hits Zou in stride he would have scored twice. So again he is performing below what we have come to expect from a Leach QB! Wreck"Em!

by techgolf44 on Nov 30, 2009 9:16 AM CST reply actions

Speaking of challenges...

Am I the only one that is completely baffled by the “irrefutable evidence” standard on review? I have heard explanations for why this is, but none of them have compelled me in the least.

A reviewer with multiple angles in slow motion probably has a better view on the actual play than the ref watching it a 200 miles per hour with only the benefit of his/her memory to call the play. If a play is worth reviewing, a solution which could only be premised on the fact that live action calls are deficient in a way that reviewed calls are not, why the deferential standard?

If the play is good enough to review, let’s give the reviewer the same deference that we would give the live ref. I think review has selected exactly the wrong party to award the tie.

by Skin Patrol on Nov 30, 2009 3:10 PM CST reply actions

Less concerned with the standard

I’m more concerned with the multiple times this year where I have seen a review decision that was completely wrong! IMO, if there is doubt, you go with the call on the field. I’m okay with that and can live with the calls going against my team from time to time.

What is not acceptable is to be able to easily see based on a review that a call on the field was wrong or right. Then they review it and make the wrong decision from the booth. This happened multiple times this year and it is unacceptable. If a normal fan watching the game can see a call was wrong, then surely the replay official should NOT miss this call.

It looks bad and appears to show a bias toward particular teams.

by imisswesttexas on Nov 30, 2009 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, one other thing

I threw a challenge flag on the FSSW broadcast team for the Tech vs Baylor game.

The ruling on the field was they were competent to be the announcers. I challenged the call and am confident the ruling on the field will be overturned. I can offer irrefutable evidence to prove my point.

Red flag still on the field. I’ll keep you posted.

by imisswesttexas on Nov 30, 2009 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

In my opinion...

the vast majority of the time that they miss the call is when there is a lack of “irrefutable” evidence. If “a normal fan watching the game can see a call was wrong” then it is probably the case that it is the wrong call. But the standard is not if “a normal fan watching the game can see a call was wrong” which is what I think the standard should be, or something similar. If a call is obviously wrong, they reverse it. If it is merely PROBABLY wrong, ie. most of us know and can see that it is wrong, they may not reverse it absent some vague, requisite “irrefutable” evidence.

In other words, to steal some legal language, I think review officials should have de novo review. If they had total discretion to change calls on the field I think we would see a lot fewer clearly erroneous calls.

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Nov 30, 2009 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

I like the way it is

I know that some calls that are wrong don’t get changed, and that bugs me. But they are just trying to keep it more traditional. Before reviews what the refs called stood no matter what. If there is not irrefutable evidence to overturn something I think we should stick with what the ref on the field calls. I know this means more botched calls, but that is part of what makes football football.

by jdeeTTU on Dec 1, 2009 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

Traditional...

I am not trying to bash on your appeal, because everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact that something is traditional is precisely the kind of defense of a practice that I completely fails to compel me. Booth review is not traditional. The forward pass, for years, was not traditional. Mike Leach’s personality and offense are not traditional.

If botched calls are an important part of the football experience, we shouldn’t review plays… at all. By analogy: Helmets today are much safer than they were in the 30s, although they could be safer. However, concussions and spinal injuries are just part of what makes football football, ergo we should not improve modern helmets anymore.

You might well be right that booth review is not traditional, but that being the case we should abandon it completely. We shouldn’t enact an entire complicated, potentially broken review system to remedy a problem (blown calls) and then refuse to let the system work.

But that’s just my opinion.

Go register. Or else.

That's Why WE Don't Coach

It’s funny to me how everyone is complaining about Potts and wondering why the heck he is still starting. You’re probably the same kind of fans who want to pull any QB we have who throws 1 incompletion, or wants to fire Ruffin McNeal when an opposing team converts a 3rd down. The fact of the matter is, there is much more that goes in to naming a starting QB than me or anyobody else on DTN would think. My advice is: just sit back and be a fan….and let the coaches do their job. Coach Leach has given us quality quarterbacks year after year. Obviously he knows what he is doing. They know about all the things Potts is doing wrong YET they still start him. Apparantly they think he is the best man for the job which is why they are starting him. So really there is no need in complaining or second guessing the coaches. They know what they’re doing, we really don’t have a clue, let’s just enjoy the game and support the Red Raiders!
