Baylor, Potts, and 2010.....
Before Saturday's game I was expecting if not a blow out, a game firmly in hand from start to finish. As I watched the game, my emotions could be sumed up by simply using the word underwhelmed. I was of course happy to get the win, but I truly was hoping the team had turned the corner and would have capped the season off with a solid win. By solid, I am refering to a win that would send us into next year feeling like all the stars (and the QBs) are aligned for an amazing 2010 season. Saturday's game was not that kind of win.
I keep hearing on 104.3 and reading the same here, that as a fan I should be happy we got the "W", and even more happy that we have the kind of defense that can now win close games (something missing in past teams). I get that, and I have seen flashes of brillance this season from what appears to be an improved defensive squad. The struggle I have after Saturday's game is that IMO, that game was NOT an example of solid defense, and not a defensive performance that should be celebrated. I saw missed tackle after missed tackle, medicore qb pressure, etc.....and all of this against the worse team in the conference, and with their 4th string QB! Sure the "D" came through on the last drive to seal the win, but against who? Should anything but a hold in that moment, or any moment in that game, against that opponent, be accepted? The truth is, when the entire body of work is considered, Saturday was simply another poor offensive and defensive showing similiar to that of the A&M game.
As for Potts, and this offense. As you all know I have both pointed out the flaws of Potts, but also prayed for his emergence as our leader (and urged you too as well). I think it is too early and ridiculous to say that the Potts Project is an utter failure, or that he is the worst of the Leach era. That said, I think Seth's (and in the past, my own) detailed comparrisons between Potts and Harrell are flawed. Yes Harrell too only had 8 wins, including 11 interceptions, in his first year. But in truth, Potts doesn't have 8 wins, he only has 5. As we all know 3 of those 8 wins belong to Mr. Sheffield. IF Potts had been the captain for those 3 additional games, not only would 3 wins been no guarantee, but given his track record, Potts would have certainly had more than 11 interceptions. All of this taken into account, and as much as it hurts me to say, Potts had a MUCH worse first season when compared to Harrell.
So what is wrong with Potts? Simply put, alot. As Graham did his first year, he makes poor decisions (just not as many). His mechanics make his throwing motion look like a folded lawn chair. He rarely steps into throws, usually throwing flat footed, and when uncomfortable, throws off his back foot. His foot work would win honors on "Dancing with the Stars", but win zero points with QB coaches. This is most prevelant when he is forced to make multiple progressions, but with plenty of time. If you go back and look at the tape, he regreses into a sort of two foot "bunny hop", rappidly hoping up and down as he searches for an open receiver. Lastly, Taylor has failed to tap into whatever that "IT" factor is. It's a combination of locker room leadership, fan confidence, and the ability to just be a winner. That IT factor that Harrell too struggled to find early on, but did. The problem is it took Harrell 3 years to perfect that "IT" mentality, and Taylor won't have that luxury.
So what now? I still maintain that the best thing for the program period is that our best recruits overcome their growing pains, and lead this team. That includes Potts. My fear for 2010 however is NOT that Taylor can't be the QB we need, it's that he came into to 2009 behind schedule. He simply is not as good as Harrell was at this point in their careers, and he surely is not where we thought he would be at this point. That creates a huge problem for this team in 2010. If it took Graham 3 years to perfect his craft, and Taylor is developmentaly behind, with only one year remaining, HOUSTON we have a problem.
With these inevitable facts in place, I am ready to put "Sticks" Sheffield at the top of my QB depth chart for 2010. I think Sticks has issues of his own don't get me wrong. He is undersized and has a penchant for throwing pick 6 interceptions ( three in four games). However, developmentally he is further along than Potts, as a junior should be, and time is not a luxury we have. In 2010, if Sheffield's size leads to more injuries, or if he can't duplicate his limited 2009 success, I vote in favor of getting our young talent (Karram/Doege) the chance at multiple years of development as we have seen the success that brings (Harrell).
As for the Bowl Game, I see the coach leaving Potts as the starter, and I think that is best. Little is on the line down in San Antonio, and I see no reason to risk aggrevating Steven's injury. Let's get behind Potts and the 2009 team for one more game, and let the rest lie unitl the Spring. 2010 could very well be the year of the Pirate, and the year of the Mad Scientist (Leach). But to realize that potential, I am now ready to say that the Mad Scientist needs to call an end to the Taylor Potts Experiment.

Get the “F” over it. I’m sick of coming onto Double T Nation to have people bash a QB. Stop beating a dead horse.
If anyone doesn’t remember we almost lost to Baylor last year. Baylor isn’t the Baylor of the late 90’s early 2000’s. They have tallent too and that game was for them a “bowl” game.
Graham Harrell broken hand, Crabtree broken foot / stress fracture.......
Just saying…
Along with the wind out of our sales after OU loss last year….
And, I will not get the “F” over it. It is a problem that we should discuss and bring up points about. A lot of things have been uncovered and brought to the table today.

He's not bashing any QB
He’s bashing a remarkably bad QB, Taylor Potts. This offense needs a good QB to run well & we’ve just endured an entire season of mostly bad QB play (The Sheffield games being the exception). It’s time to move on to the next guy.
Bash????
I suggest you come on DTN more often. If you did you would know that I have NEVER “bashed” Potts, but in fact prior to the OSU game illustarted a path where both Potts and the team could win out and make the cotton bowl.
You my friend seemed to have a case of Homer-itus. A disease that afflicts the most loyal fan, and I have been there. However, a rational fan is able to love and cheer for his team, while at the SAME time be able to disect and asses it’s performance and that of it’s players. After said disection, if the outcome of the analysis is un-favorable fopr the team or player, acknowledging that is NOT “bashing”.
I would trade 1000 homers drowning in blind loyalty, for a handful of loyal fans with the ability to be objective.
I for one am not a “homer”, and would like change when it is called for. Sticks however hasn’t wowed me yet because he hasn’t played great against a good team. Yes he did win at Nebraska, but credit the defense with that win since we put up the lowest offensive output in Leach history. My problem with Sticks is the pick 6 problem. I bashed Harrell too for that and we might have been able to win at OSU with Potts in the whole game. I am not calling you out specifically but I don’t see the point in saying so and so is better than so and so everyday of the week on this site.
TCU...
The 2006 TCU game with Harell at QB was actually our worst offensive game in Leach era, not 2009 NE. That said, you and I agree on the question marks on Sticks, as I have said here often. The difference is after a full season I would rather worry about what Sticks hasn’t done, than endure another season of what Potts HAS done.

another....
Harrell/Potts comparison that doesn’t work. See my initial post, above. Also see my post entitled “Potts..Heisman Winner..Big 12 Champ”. I am no Potts hater, he just doesn’t have the time left, given how far behind he is, to get to where he needs to be. I expected him to take his 2nd chance when Sticks went down and run with it. As we all have seen, he just wasn’t able to do that.

I was at the New Mexico game and got to see and experience the difference between Potts and Sheffield live. I would tell anybody to go back and watch that game again. Sheffield is not just a better qb, but he is a better leader. When Sheffield came in that game everyone played harder. It was like someone turned the whole stadium on. It’s not just a matter of passing percentage. I would love for Potts to be as great as we all expected him to be, but to this point the team with Sheffield has been more productive/explosive. Sticks needs to get in the weight room over the summer.
I totally agree with this post. Especially the part about giving Karam 4 years as a starter…I think he will be a great QB here…he is one hell of an athelete and will change the look of our offense in the future.
Interesting
I think The Stache needs to go into Spring Practice as the starter but The Captain needs to keep a close eye and a be ready to make a quick decision if he doesnt see the improvement WE ALL have been calling for.
If its not there. Yes, I think Leach needs to make the same type of tough decision like when he chose Harrell over Todd.

hold on a second...
Who here is actually treating Potts as our true starter? TTUMAR: You act as though the entire doubletnation hasn’t already put Sticks as the starter for 2010… I mean we all saw how crippled he still was against OSU, nobody in their right mind would have started him against Baylor. Potts is our second string… period the end. Karam will start in due time… right now Sticks has earned the starting job, and it shouldn’t even be thought about otherwise.
As for the expecting a blowout business… how can you call someone else a homer when expecting this much from a Potts lead team???? This was a Baylor team that damn near beat us AT HOME, WITH GH and Crabby leading the way. This game is like the F-ing super bowl to the Bears, and on top of that if they had won they were looking at snapping the longest bowl drought in Big 12 history. There was allot stacked up against Tech this year, and to EXPECT a blowout is the very definition of ‘homer-itus’.
Sorry if this post seems harshly worded, I know all of us are still Red Raider fans through and through… Here is to a good bowl showing in San Antonio!
Wreck ’Em
Blowout?
If you read my post carefully (it shouldn’t be hard, it’s the first line), I cleary said my expectation was the game to be in hand from start to finish, not a blow out.
I ADD: IF the Bears had won Saturday it would have given them 5 wins on the year, not the 6 required for bowl elligibility. If you follow the bread crumbs here, you assertion that beating Tech would have snapped their bowless streak was in fact wrong.
I have zero problem with passionate, strongly worded, rebuttal……preach on brother. Let’s just make sure that next time you know what you are talking about.
A Tip of the Hat
I was indeed wrong, I had been misinformed before and was wrong about their win total going into the game. Make no mistake about it though, it was and has been for a few years now… their super bowl.
So in that respect thanks for keepin me honest.

I think it's clear...
that we won’t know who the starter is in 2010 until after camp. Pott’s isn’t being bashed so much as critiqued. The common goal is to get the best QB to fit this offense and we didn’t see that this season. I think Potts had plenty of time to develop into that player if he’s to be the guy. We are lucky we have depth at this position because we could be a whole lot worse off. Moving forward I expect a 3 way competition between Potts,SS and Karam. If I were a betting man I would say Potts lines up at QB next season. This is just because I see Leach going with what he thinks is best even though we may not all see it that way. Sheffield is a walk-on athlete with flashes of greatness but he’s still a walk-on and lacks some serious weight. He needs to bulk up if wants to compete. Please don’t get me wrong as my brother was a Tech walk-on and I have nothing against walk-ons. I just don’t see Leach making SS the starter at the beginning of the 2010 season. If Potts lays a turd early on in 2010 we might see a change. Lastly, I expect Karam to compete largely this spring for the starting spot and if he impresses…who knows.
Who knows???
Not coach Leach, not Potts, not Sticks or Karam and certainly not any of the DTN nation. IMO, I think this is due to how the season played out. I would expect a competition going all through fall camp before captain names a starter. Frankly, I think that is the right decision at this point. Let all three compete and work their ass off over the summer and see who prevails.
To me, the bigger concern is the dreaded “sticking-with-the-starter-regardless-of-poor-play-because-I-don’t-rotate-QB’s” mentality next year. I’d define this affliction, but it’s fairly self-explanatory.
Coach Leach has already stated he made a mistake pulling Potts in the OSU game. And history tells us he selects a starter and that is the QB for the year (or at least the first 3-5 games). I don’t particularly see any of the 3 distancing themselves from each other so much so that it is an obvious choice. My guess is a coin flip btw Potts and Sticks for the starter. And if that is the case, you go with whatever combo gives you the best chance to win!
Harrell vs Potts
Dont forget Harrell was a true sophmore and Potts is a redshirt junior when taking over the reins for the first time!!!!
ENJOY
I think its pretty amazing that we have the depth in our program to continue to “strongly discuss” our quarterback situation. Amazing that we have the depth of overcome several injuries at that position and still come out on top a number of times. And what a bunch of bitching about a win. Do you realize that Baylor pays their players just like we do and Art Briles is a helluva football coach? If you were ever in the arena you realize how difficult it is to win on any given gameday. Unless you lost your butt with the line in the Baylor game why don’t you enjoy a WIN! It was a great experience with the DeathStar and Godzillavision. It was very cool to see some 50,000 Red Raiders in attendance. And the beer was ice cold before and after the game. I am just sorry for those that continued to text me during the game to complain about “Potts sucking”. Good grief! Take a chill pill and enjoy the moment. I love watching Leach’s system during the good and bad times. Isn’t it entertaining even when it is maddening? Enjoy the moment folks and realize how good we have it! See you in San Antonio.
Can't.....
Can’t relax….with every well executed play I beam with pride like I just had a baby, and with every missed tackle or interception I take notes. So goes the life of an obsessed fan. But don’t worry, I’m not on the ledge by any means, and I will continue to support Tech with a fanaticism that would make the Taliban envious.

We live
and die by quaterback play in leach’s offense. We feast when its great (see 2008 season) and starve when its not(see UH,OSU,2008 OU). We were all spolied by graham. he was great. as long as leach is here, we will expect great qb play because leach has turned out some good college qbs. Potts is no different. The reason why we are so critical of potts is because we know he can be great and gots all the skills to go out there and prove it,but its just frustrating that he can be so inconsistent at times. I will not only take raider1992’s bet but ill even up the ante: not only will potts get the nod, but he will have a breakout season next year. mark my words. and if im wrong, pass me the crow plz.
no crow needed....
Just be right. Though I am obviously skeptical after a full season with Potts, I would absolutely love to be wrong and see him win the QB competition in the offseason, and dazzle in next fall. That said, not gonna happen.

Normally I Don't Question Leach On QBs!
But I am siiiiick and tiiired and tiiired and siiick of not mediocre but below average QB play by Potts. He is not a normal Leach QB. I can understand the argument about growing pains, but do we really have time for growing pains. Sticks looks like a Leach QB except he is more mobile than most, he is a good leader, he makes good reads (watch his head) , he doesn’t seem to get shook up after making a bad play. For crying out loud Peyton Manning throws quit a few int’s but finds a way to win, just look at his game yesterday. I am not trying in no way compare Sticks to Manning but good QB’s find a way to win. I don’t believe Potts is that man. I believe Sticks is that man even though he is going to make mistakes and bad ones at times. Potts seems zero in on receivers and not make his reads. Potts really didn’t have that much pressure in the Baylor game but really stunk it up in the 1st half. I just like my chances with Sticks in a tight game in the 4th quarter more than I do with Potts. Leach needs to get Sticks ready for the Alamo Bowl. I do not want to lose to a inferior big 10 team.

If we win our bowl, we're ranked
That having been said, I can’t help feeling like Saturday felt like the 1st half of the last three bowl games we played. Not ready to play ball from the shoot. We need whoever gave Auburn the pregame speech to talk to our guys. Those people were ready to play from the get go, they faded as Alababma’s talent showed, but they were up 14-0 before I could get my second beer. Now I know ML gives a damned good pep talk at halftime, but can we please be ready in the FIRST quarter at this year’s bowl?
bowl games
This is a huge problem with the bcs and bowl games in general. It is one of the dumbest concepts in sports to make a team sit around for over a month to play the next game… Let them study for finals and have bowl games a week after that.
Starting quarterback
Now that im really thinking about it. whoever is made the starter next year. HAS TO PREFORM! Leach will not let this slide. I think the only reason why potts started the rest of the season was because sticks was injured, and doege isnt there yet, and karem would waste his redshirt year. I dont doubt at all that whomever is made starting quarterback does not preform up to his capabilities, he will be pulled…PERIOD! leach demands effort, hard work, excited to play etc. and he doesnt get that your gone. we have seen that plenty before with woods, detron lewis, hicks just to name a few.

Lets give some credit
where credit is due. Baylor has improved significantly the past year, and they would be even better this year had their starting QB and backup QB not been hurt. I don’t know if you’ve paid attention, but Robert Griffin is a BEAST. If he had been healthy enough to play all season, you can bet BU would have had more W’s in their tally than 4. Tech is going through a tough year, but lets be proud we ended the season 8-4. I’ll take that any day of the week. We are finishing 4th in the Big XII, and considering the lackluster QB showing we’ve had, I’ll say that is pretty impressive. Have some faith that Leach will get the boys prepared for next year. He has 8 months to get everything in order, and I know Leach personally, and he won’t stand for the same mistakes twice.

great insight
I agree 100%. My addition to this post is that Leach insert a more determined effort to run the ball. In doing so, open up the pass, alleviating pressure from whomever is at the Qb spot. Our running backs are good, I expect a great offense next year. A good pass/run ratio: 65/35

Thanks to our team.
I want to say thank you to the Texas Tech Red Raiders for this year of football. They put in great effort and finished higher than most media outlets had predicted, a common trait of Texas Tech football team for a couple of decades now. They accomplished this despite a number of things affecting the team that for many other teams (re: Baylor; OU) would have been very debilitating. Could Tech have done better? Maybe, maybe not. We got what we got and can’t change it, no matter how much whining and bashing we do. It is now up to the Texas Tech team to gird up and prepare for a strong performance in whichever bowl game in which they are to play. If everyone does what the coaches ask of them, it will not matter who is the QB as the Raiders will be able to win by running their offense and defense properly. It is all in the preparation, including getting the right mindset entering the game. So, regardless of who starts at what position, I will be cheering on my Red Raiders to win another bowl game and set themselves up for a good opportunity to improve next year to the point of competing for the Big-12 championship. All I would like is a shot at a BCS bowl, any BCS bowl. Small steps. Then, in the very near future, the BCS championship game, if not next year, or in addition to next year, whichever happens. Let us all get behind this year’s group and cheer them ALL on to victory. GO TECH!
TTpilk
I was in college when Jerry Moore was coach.
This era of Texas Tech football is a lot more fun. Its remarkable we have been bowl eligible for 16 years now. I would not trade our coaching staff for anybody else’s in the Big 12 right now. I Believe we will win our bowl game this year and have my fingers crossed for a BCS bid next year.
