Texas Tech DE Brandon Sharpe Earns League Honor

Texas Tech defensive end Brandon Sharpe (Lyons, Ga.) was named the Co-Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Red Raiders' 20-13 win over Baylor at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The honor is the second of the season for Sharpe, who earned the honor following his four-sack performance at Nebraska in October.

Sharpe recorded his 14th and 15th sacks of the season in the win over the Bears and made possibly the biggest defensive play of the game late in the fourth quarter. With Tech leading 20-13 and Baylor inside the Red Raiders' 10-yard line, BU quarterback Blake Szymanski ran a keeper up the middle, but Sharpe met him at the line of scrimmage and forced a fourth-down play, which Tech stopped.

How did he come out on the conference overall sack count? Wasn’t he two behind Von Miller going into last week?

It’s a good thing another one of Colt’s best friends forever doesn’t play D-line, or Sharpe wouldn’t have had a chance.

Congratulations

Brandon Sharpe has become one of, if not, the most dangerous defenders in the Big-12. Credit must also be given to the rest of the D-Line as they have also created pressure on the QB’s that have resulted in Brandon’s big numbers. While not the best defense in the league, it is good enough to give Tech a chance to win every game, unless they don’t show up (re: A&M). The Houston loss, I think is squarely on the Offense. The other two losses were tough games and Tech just got beat. Still, Sharpe has evolved into the type player we should all hope to have playing for Tech across the board. He deserves all accolades that are awarded to him.

When you break it down, Sharpe was actually much more valuable than Von Miller. Miller had more overall sacks with 17, but 8 of them came in the first three games against lesser competition: New Mexico (3), Utah State (3), and UAB (2).

Sharpe on the other hand on had two against crappy OOC teams: Rice (1) and New Mexico (1). Plus, Sharpe missed the UT game and was sick (I think) against aTm.

That means in conference play, where it really counts, Sharpe out-sacked Miller by plenty, Sharpe’s 13 to Miller’s 9. Miller’s only a junior, though, and will get another year to wreak havoc. Too bad Sharpe is playing his final game in a month!
