Taking a Breath :: Looking Ahead to the Texas Tech Defense of 2010
THE DEFENSE
With the football bye week, DTN is taking this opportunity to look at Texas Tech's offense and defense in 2010. Up today is a look at the 2-deep, the talented players who are on the roster, but have not contributed much this year, the 2010 defensive recruiting class and a look back at the past 5 years recruits and the washout rate of players who were recruited by Texas Tech.

If it's not incredibly clear, the weakness of this team will be at defensive end. I've mentioned this a couple of times and for 2 years straight, Texas Tech is losing quite a bit of production from the defensive end position. The key to all of this is that no one has seen any of these guys play on the collegiate level, other than Haliburton, who has done reasonably well in some spot duty early in the season and filling in for Howard, Sharpe and Henley during the early part of the season when there were so many injuries.
The strength of the defense will be up front with the return of Whitlock and Perry, who should form a formidable front and I think there's plenty of talent behind them in Graves and Wade. Much like Jacob Karam, Graves travels with the team and that's an indication that his personality in infectious and reading the tea leaves, he is going to be a player next year. I'd also mention that I do not see any of these tackles moving to defensive end. Perhaps that changes during the spring, but for the time being, I think this is your 2-deep.
Linebacker also returns 2 of the 3 starters from this year. Marlon Williams has been servicable, but he's been virtually non-existent for the better part of conference play, this past weekend's game excluded. You can expect Sonier to fill Williams spot at WLB. I'm also intrigued by Mahoney and Chidozie, who perhaps represent a change in the type of linebacker that Ruffin McNeill wants, which are projectable athletes who can run. If you see a change in philosophy, I think it starts at linebacker and continues to the secondary.
Jamar Wall will be the only player that needs replacement in the secondary next year and Johnson will have to step up his game during the offseason. I think the staff is enamored with his athletic ability, but you saw against TAMU how athletic ability can only carry you so far, he's got to be better from a technique standpoint as well. Ford should also take a step in the right direction this offseason and I may be in the minority, but I'd like to see more Charbonnet and expect Y. Williams to get some time next year as well. All in all, a pretty experienced group returning next year.
Lots more after the jump.
Don't Sleep On
DT: Britton Barbee (6-2/296; SR) and David Neill (6-5/280; JR)
DE: Jonathan Brydon (6-3/220; SR)
LB: None
CB: Jarvis Phillips (6-0/189; RS FR)
S: Jared Flannel (5-11/167; JR); Aaron Charbonnet (5-11/201; RS FR); Andre McCorkle (6-2/204; JR); Daniel Cobb (6-1/211; RS FR) and Terrance Bullitt (6-3/182; RS FR)
I think the only guys that I'm comfortable stating could make an impact from this group is Cobb and Bullitt, although I like Barbee and Neill from a depth perspective
Recruiting
| POSITION | PLAYER | STATS | RR | STARS |
| DE | Kedrick Dial | 6-5/215 | 5.6 | 3 |
| DE | Jackson Richards | 6-4/245 | 5.8 | 4 |
| DT | Coby Coleman | 6-3/290 | 5.7 | 3 |
| DT | Lawrence Rumph | 6-4/270 | 5.7 | 3 |
| LB | Zac Winbush | 6-2/200 | 5.5 | 3 |
| DB | Urell Johnson | 6-1/185 | 5.6 | 3 |
| DB | Desmond Martin | 6-0/173 | 5.6 | 3 |
| DB | Russell Polk | 5-11/200 | 5.6 | 3 |
| DB | Tre'Vante Porter | 6-0/185 | 5.7 | 3 |
| DB | Brandon Smith | 6-1/175 | 5.6 | 3 |
| AVERAGE | 5.63 | 3.09 |
If additional recruits are added, I think it's on the defensive side of the ball, namely at defensive end or linebacker. The one guy that I think could get some burn next year is Rumph, especially with the lack of defensive end. Keep in mind that Rumph was luke-warm when he committed to Texas Tech, so I would not count on his commitment until he's actually signed. I think you could also see Richards make an impact next year and Dial is another player who might make a difference next year. Richards is one of the more higher rated players of the class, he's a mature player and already has the size to play defensive end on the collegiate level. At this point, I'd imagine that it's about technique more than anything else. The sleeper of this group might be Martin, who was highly impressive in his film and possibly Porter.
Recruit Trending
| YEAR | AVG. RR | AVG. STARS | WASHOUT RATE |
| 2010 | 5.63 | 3.09 | - |
| 2009 | 5.57 | 3.00 | 2/15 = 13.33% |
| 2008 | 5.63 | 3.13 | 5/8 = 62.50% |
| 2007 | 5.47 | 2.70 | 2/10 = 20.00% |
| 2006 | 5.53 | 2.89 | 7/19 = 36.84% |
Disclaimer: I'm using the Rivals recruiting rankings and each player is assigned an RR number and a star.
To explain again, the Washout Rate are players who either never made it on campus or played only 1 year. As you'll note, the 2008 class was small, only 16 recruits total (keep in mind that there will be some classes that are smaller than others and a staff is typically limited to a certain number of scholarships in relation to the number of players on scholarship) but you had guys like Joey Fowler, McKinner Dixon, Broderick Marshall, Brandon Sesay and Brandon Reid (who could return to Texas Tech after a stint at JUCO) that all never made it at Texas Tech. This was Ruffin's first class officially, but this was also the same year that he replaced Setencich. If you wanted to take a look at the year that McNeill was in place early as the defensive coordinator then it's really the 2009 class that's his first class from start of the recruiting season to signing day. In that 2009 class you only had Romario Cathey who never made it on campus and James Scott, another guy who has gone the JUCO route but has a good chance of returning to Lubbock.

Great job Seth....
As difficult as this year has been the future is extemely bright. Our recruiting is really taking off on both side of the ball. TTech has entered the world of getting kids from Okla., La, and now FL and even MS. Who would have really thought that? I love Ruff and I D is getting so much better. Scheme will come as we get better players and we are getting better players. Wreck’Em Tech
Young DE
but there could be worse problems. Hopefully they’re getting some meaningful reps in practice and will really develop in the spring. If these guys want it, they’ll have several years of play to get their name out there.
I, for one
am excited to see guys like Myles Wade and Chris Perry step up and contribute to this Defensive Unit. It excites me as much as our lack of DE’s scares me.
We will probably lack depth at LB although we should be solid and our depth in the Secondary will be one of our strengths.

Sooo many FR
at DE. Such is life though. Hopefully some of these guys will step up.
You are not alone in hoping T. Charbonnet sees more time on the field next year. I’d be lying if I claimed to have watched him specifically on film vs the other corners… but the whole Charbonnet dynasty just makes me smile. I’m also stoked about Aaron getting a shot. Looks like the 2 deep will be tough for him to crack next year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a dominant performance on special teams in a similar fashion to his two older brothers’ starts. I don’t have any ties to the Charbonnets, nor could I even point any of the three out in a crowd… just love the story line and the fact that the players like it at TTU enough to encourage their siblings to come as well. Hopefully this trend carries over to the Fehekos… I hear the one graduating this year is awesome, but that the youngest who is just getting started in high school could be the best of the lot.
If the shipley’s and mccoy’s are all gonna have a tradition at texas, then we gotta have some great families of players too!
On second thought, we don’t want the Kindle tradition. We don’t have enough apartments the way it is. We sure enough don’t need somebody knocking one down every time they get a text.
DE troubles
I’ve mentioned this before earlier in the season, but why not move Bird to DE? He did yeomans work against Texas and has the speed we need for that position. I think he’s too big to cover IRs at his weight, but does pretty good with his hand in the grass.
I say all that with another ulterior motive i.e. to get Fehoko and Sonier on the field next year. I’ve been a Fehoko fan since I first heard about him in 2006 during Thursday night scrimmages. The word was that the boy just makes plays.
Sonier is probably the fastest LB we have and is talented to boot. So we need to get him on the field as soon as possible.
Pretty good idea
Not sure if you do it on an every-down basis. But I like the idea of Bird moving to DE on passing downs and bringing in Sonier to cover the inside receivers. I agree with regard to the UT game, he’s a big reason we were competitive in that game.

Our Defensive End Woes...
would get better if we switched to a 3-4. ha!
Witha DT
that plays over the Center (Nose Tackle-Colbie Whitlock) and Joker Position pass rush package we pretty much run a 3-4 hybrid scheme now.
This is probably not a totally unworkable solution

Agree regarding Bird. Especially if he would commit to the DE position. He has good size, has already been taking snaps during games lined up as the DE, and with a little extra time spent with Beanie over the Spring and Summer, could be good option. Mahoney was pretty highly touted as a recruit (we stole him from OU), and I think he could fill Bird’s slot at OLB.
I would also like to see us run the nickel defense a little more to keep Will Ford on the field, especially in the pass-happy Big XII. 1 less LB to field.
correctamundo
If we make the move on Bird it would need to be total commitment. I agree, anything we can do to get Fehoko, Sonier, Will Ford, and DJ Johnson on the field at the same time would be a good thing!
yes..
Bird did a fantastic job at DE agaoinst Texas. I think his size and speed would be a huge advantage.
Yep, that's a good thought
for sure, re. Bird at DE. That will definitely help with the dept issues. Bird is already at 240, which is the same size as Howard, so that’s not an issue. I guess it wouldn’t surprise me or anyone else if this happened during the offseason.

I like the young group that is coming up. They have more talent than we have seen at Tech and it is spread across every position. While these guys may be young I think they will work just right. Look at Cody Davis this year. He is young, but very talented and just makes plays. That’s all we need guys to make plays.
And Special Teams
Key, to, is the return of Carona, Williams and Erxleben along with Eric Stephens on returns. The Special Teams have been very good and it’ll be nice to have some continuity.
Jackson Richards
is a beast and could make a push at DE immediately with his skills. I’ve watched him play and would say he’s probably one of the best recruits we have coming in if not the best. Dial could also be another Brandon Williams type player. Our defense at a glance looks adequate but if some of these younger guys see the field right way it could be crazy good. Corner back position has me worried the most but I’m sure things will balance out once camp begins.
Corner back
yes…how is that we have 9 guys listed at safety and only 5 CBs? We either need to tranistion a couple of safeties or 3 of this year’s DB recruits need to end up at corner and be ready to play early, as I think we are 1 ankle sprain away from a gaping hole here.
DE and DT
We don’t know much about the DE’s for sure and they are young in age. Who knows they may be players. Haliburton got some experience, but I did not see much difference in his play than either Wade’s or Perry’s this season. We can reasonable expect Richards to be making a strong move for pt, he is supposed to be one of the very best in Texas this year. Think blue chip caliber when the words had meaning.
Similarly, we don’t know that much about the DT’s, except Whitlock, who is a player, and Perry, who has not cracked the playing time arena yet. Wade and Graves look good because they have gotten attention, but neither bring that much difference than the young DE’s in terms of experience.
Yes, it is time for David Neil to play DT !!!
I am intrigued with Polk (certainly not the tall rangy type). His size is almost LB size.
Dial is listed as tall and rangy, he might need about 20=25 LBs to be effective as a DE.
Rumph is small for a DT, I could see him making a switch to DE, he is listed with good speed.
It would not hurt to recruit another good DE and DT for this class. Maybe as signing gets closer Coach Ruff and company can execute another “Pearlie Graves” type switcheroo !!!
I think we are going have a good LB corps, their game will, of course, depend on the guys in front, there is a good mix of experience and potential there. I am looking for Mahoney, just because of the way he came in. Chidozie is intreguing as well, just because he is not all that big but has the eye of his DC.
As much as I am going to miss Wall, the secondary is going to be an asset, there is a strong large group (abt 20) of guys vying for pt there, both as safties and as cb’s.
Charbonnet
Id love to see more of taylor charbonnet and possibly start him in walls spot.
Common guys...
at the beginning of the season, everyone was worried about replacing B. Williams, M. Dixon, and B. Sesay. Williams and Dixon had a total of 22.5 TFL (32.5 to the rest of the team) which 19 of those went to Sacks (the remainder of the team had 11 Sacks)… 55 TFL and 30 sacks for the season went to the whole D.
Look how the D responded with those losses… still have 3 games left and a bowl game, and the Defense has 61 TFL and 30 Sacks… pretty damn good if you ask me. The one’s that took over Williams and Dixon spots…. B. Sharpe and D. Howard have contributed 17.5 TFL, which 16 have gone to sacks. M. Williams (3.5 sacks), Whitlock (3 sacks), and Henley (3 sacks) have partaken as well. Ruff and the other Defensive coaches have taken this team to another level and looking to only get better. Still 4 games left (with bowl game) and this team has already had as many sacks as last year’s team and 6 more TFL’s.
Yes, Williams, Sesay, and Dixon have been missed, just as this season’s Seniors will be missed… but the Defense will continue to reload.
WRECK EM TECH!!!!
Oh yeah...
and replacing 7 of the 8 in the secondary as well (1st string and backups) was no easy task either, but I believe they have been doing an amazing job in RELOADING that area as well.
just thought I'd add
Much like Jacob Karam, Graves travels with the team and that’s an indication that his personality in infectious and reading the tea leaves, he is going to be a player next year.
I also think coaches put redshirts on their travel squad for the worst case scenario that everyone ahead of them on the depth chart is injured in the game, they’re the next man up. IOW, Graves is the best young DT y’all have, and if forced to, could play right now.
Graves
absolutely has the most potential, but in front of Graves, there’s Whitlock, Jones, Perry, Hunter, and Wade all in front of Graves. There would have to be quite a bit of attrition for Graves to play. Leach has mentioned a couple of times that the reason why both Karam and Graves travel with the squad is because Leach likes their attitude. In general though, I’d agree with your sentiment in that redshirt players do travel because they may be the next best thing (i.e. in case of emergency only), but it appears that Karam and Graves are exceptions to that rule.

Recruiting feeds the machine
The Raider defense is starting to gain a persona. The face of that element is R.MCNeill and the team or unit if you like displays an entirely appropriate swagger. I think it will only gain momentum and much like the last 2 x years offense fueled by # 5’s level of talent we can expect a key player to emerge for the defense. Very likely it’s a Def End or Line backer. Could be a D. Slay like secondary guy.. these are even harder to find though. I am remembering Senior Sack here. A player who demands 2 x blockers and back to chip them. Now that’s an exciting thought my friends a Raider who plays like Mr. Pawelek of the Bears. Someone who takes away a third of the field from opposing offenses. Go Raiders recruit like hell!
