Potts.....Heisman Winner.....Big 12 Champ
Well gents I survived my three day workplace Tailgate Vigil, and the Raiders asnwered my call. I thought it was time we take an honest look at what our future should look like, and what our recent history taught us. Sticks has been a Godsend, and came in and saved the season IMO. That said, he did not possess the talent to earn a scholarship from the 3rd best recruiting team in the state, weighs 170lbs, and was an unknown to most before the UNM game. In Potts we thought we had a 2 year starter, with the finest pedigree of any Tech Qb to date, and the foundation for a run at the South Title in 2010.
Now Sticks is out (probably for the season), Doege is not there yet, and Potts looks to be the guy for the forseeable future. So what should we be hoping for as empassioned fans? I offer up the following scenario that didn't look unprobable just a few months ago, and could be again.
Potts finds the mental fortitude to take our team into Stillwater and not only upsets OSU, but does so in convincing fashion. He proceeds to pull off a close win against OK at home, and demolishes Baylor in Dallas. We finish regular season play in the top 15, and enter a Bowl game against LSU or USC!!!! We proceed to enter Bowl play on a national stage as severe underdogs against one of the most storied programs in CF (regardless of whether it's LSU or USC). Just as we did in the Holiday Bowl against top 5 Cal, we dominate in front of a national audience, our 2010 recruiting class, and classes to come. This is a difficlut road to be sure, and not likely I conceed. However, the path is there, and we control that destiny. Given the depth that Seth has laid out for 2010, we begin the 2010 season ranked in the top 10 once again, and pave the way for a 2008 repeat performance, but this time with a TU and OK squad without McCoy, Bradford, Shipley etc.....No Chase Daniel, no Dez Bryant, no Zac Robinson. No Tim tebow, no Suh. Senior Taylor Potts brings home our first Big 12 Championship, Tech plays for the national Championship, and Taylor Potts brings home the Heisman Trophy. It's all there, so how about we embrace what we have, and pray for what it could be. This would not have been far fetched only 3 months ago, and history could start in just two weeks in Stillwater. Wreck'em Tech.

whatever QB wins the offseason battle for QB - be it sticks or potts

IF............
if Potts wins out by running the Oklahoma table, and beats either USC or LSU in a bowl game, there will be NO QB battle for 2010. If look how quickly he became the whipping boy, you see how quickly he can become the face of the program, and with one heck of a rags to ritches story at that.

Absolutely,
Brother!!!
Potts is the guy with the ceiling to pull this off. Not, alas, Sticks.
This scenario has some big "if"s in it and the first one is The ’Stache sucking it up. I agree. If it plays out like that, then and only then will this unfold like you say. If not, we can start building for 2011…sigh.
I’ve always had high hope for Potts and am willing to chalk up his struggles to growing pains and lump-taking just like Harrell took in his 1st year as a starter when he got benched for throwing three 1st half picks vs. Mizzou. Potts, admittedly, was complicated by injury and a stellar performance by “Sticks”.
(rollng dice) C’mon…….baby needs defensive ends!!!

This daddy needs an "impenetrable meat wall" for an O-Line!!!
by TTUMAR on Nov 4, 2009 12:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think...
you could put the offensive line in the same category with our Defensive Tackles and Secondary.
Both D units are rotating in a LOT of players in this year. The O-Line is too.
We will only be losing Carter and Winn to graduation. That leaves McDaniel, Olson, Keown, and Okafor to start for next year. To that you add Waddle, (who will continue to see playing time this year) Gallington, and King for good measure. Olson will likely be able to backup Keown at Center if needed and Joel Gray (RSFr) and the rest of the 2010 recruiting class will all be there to choose from. Im not worried about the O-Line.

even with your dream scenario
We’ll need more than a “meat wall” with the ability to scramble and deal with pressure that Potts has shown thus far. Is this the kind of “ceiling” you’d like to see Potts attain?

Relax
I agree with you for the most part…
You think this was a fluke? For 10 quarters we saw arguably the best QB’ing in TT history!
Potts has shown the same ability to move the ball up and down the field between the 20’s much like all the 5th year Srs we’ve had under Captain Leach AND Graham Harrell. He has broken down with too many picks in the red zone. While these growing pains are MORE painful than others, they are STILL just that; growing pains.
A guy like Potts, with the right amount of seasoning, could be Bradford-esque.

and as far as meat wall is concerned, you’re done! MEAT WALL it is.

That sort of thing is learned to a great extent. Im willing to, as TTUMAR suggests, to keep my fingers crossed and hope he learns this during the rest of the season and earns back the support of his team and the fans.

those are Sheff's numbers
and they’re out-effing-standing. I don’t think Potts could ever string together those kinds of numbers…ever – with any amount of “learning.” It’s why I mention it’s a lofty “ceiling” for him to strive to achieve.

Love the idea…but it would take a 7,000 yard, 55 TD, 2 INT, 12-0 year for a Tech QB to win the Heisman.
by Tech92 on Nov 4, 2009 3:01 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Since 1990.....
5 Red Raiders have cracked the top 10 in Heisman Voting. 4 out of the 5 were Leach QBs or Recievers (Crabtree). We are on the way, and one solid win next week in Stillwater is where it all begins.

Sheff's numbers....
I am in no way denying the contribution Sticks has made, however I do believe it’s possible we have romanticised(sp) his efforts, to the detriment of our abilty to consider what Potts may be capable of. Fact in point is the Nebraska game, or the only real opponent Sticks faced to date. Consider the following offensive production stats of the Leach era:
Bad Offensive Games:
2009 NU – 259 total yards
2007 MZ – 388 total yards
2007 CO – 349 total yards
2006 OK – 281 total yards
2006 CO – 276 total yards
2006 TCU – 242 total yards
2005 UT – 468 yards
2005 OSU – 338 total yards
2005 AL Bowl Game – 329 total yards
As you can see, Stick’s game this year at NU ranks as one of the worst ever in the Leach era, and comes in second only to egg dropped against TCU in 2006. I am also not in the camp that Leach “got conservative” in the second half as it would be the first time ever, and thus more likely that NU made adjustments at the half, and Sticks and the offense couldn’t compete for 4 qtrs. This trend continued right int the A&M game. Sticks saved the season, but going forward he has not measured well against REAL defenses as I would argue Potts was able to against Texas.
by TTUMAR on Nov 4, 2009 3:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
The fact that he had a broken foot most of the second half could have had something to do with his production against Nebraska. I truly hope for Potts to be amazing, but dont take away anything from Sticks because you want to see Potts back at it. Sticks played better than Potts against NMU. Also put up FANTASTIC numbers against kstate in his first start. Potts had north dakota as his first college start, and i would have to say K. State has better defense than north dakota! Sheffield has played fantastic for the short time he has been in. He has looked better than Potts thusfar. If Potts can pull of some miracle and out do what sticks has done, well tickle me pink. And I would also argue that Sticks could have done better against Texas than Potts did. I think that Sticks would have moved in the pocket a bit and made a bit more happen, Nebraska’s D-line is much better than UT’s. Now, this is not a Potts bashing post, just dont see how you can put Sticks down like that and say that you think Potts is better. Potts has potential to be better, and I hope he realizes that ASAP, but until then, Sheffield is rightfully our starter. Not to mention the fact that all of our young recruits are mobile like Sticks, so Leach could use him to begin to change the Air Raid a bit to stay ahead of the game.
by RdrPwr on Nov 4, 2009 3:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
to be clear.......again.....
I in no way take away from what Sticks has meant to the team. I just remind everyone that he was not the guy three months ago. Potts was the guy, failed to be the guy, now HAS to be the guy. I simply point out there may be reason to slow our roll on the Sticks bandwagon with limited material, especially against quality teams. If you look at my stuff, I have not pulled my punches on Potts in past weeks, but I am not ready to annoint Sticks, nor is there reason to, because he won’t be starting next week. I also remind you that Potts was the first QB this season to throw 7 tds, less we forget.
If the coaching staff would have latched on the impressive play of the back-up QB during the MZ game a few years ago, Chris Todd would be our QB today, and Harrell would be insurance. If there is any chance our blue chip, highly recruited, prototypical QB, can pick himself and this team up…..THAT is best case scenario for this team.

Just making sure
I’m all for Potts reemerging as our leader again as well. And you’re right, he HAS TO for our team to amount to much this year. I just hope that Leach doesnt hold Potts pedigree above all else over the offseason. Whomever performs best in practice SHOULD be the starter, end of story. And if that is Potts and he slips up early on in the season next year, throw SS in and see if he brings back the fire again. I just want what’s best for the team. My only argument for SS if Potts does well is (as I mentioned earlier) that our new recruits are all extremely mobile. Teams seem to be slowly catching on to our system, and if I know Leach he is recruiting these runners for a reason. It’s no coincidence. Cant help but think he wants a QB that can run if need be. Sheffield would give us a chance to slowly work into that. But all that said, let the best player play! Here’s to Potts being all that we hoped for and more these last few games!
by RdrPwr on Nov 4, 2009 6:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve tried to avoid the SS vs TP discussions thus far, so I’m only going to skirt around the edge here.
I never bought the ‘going conservative’ bit either re: the NU game. SS was running for his life most [all] of the 3rd qtr and definitely needs to learn that throwing it away is better than a 15 yard sack. But there are some other points that weigh in his favor from that game:
- 3 long drives for scores in the 1st half against a world-class defense
- NU held the ball almost all of the 3rd qtr and most of the 4th (no chance for stats)
- SS led a drive the length of the field when he needed to in the 4th
- Zero Ints or fumbles
The K.St. game speaks for itself. At UNM, 7 points before he came in, 41 afterward.
If TP can do what TTUMAR talks about the rest of this year, he would definitely go up several notches in my book. Hell, he’d be my favorite guy if he did all that. But so far, one good half against UT wasn’t enough to convince me he’s the man, even if I was to forget about the two turnovers that sealed the game.

Not so much bi-polar, as trying to concoct a refreshing summer beverage. You see on the surface it would appear that in Potts were sold a lemon. But before we invoke the “lemon law”, we would like to try one more time, wait for it…..to make lemonade.

Not meeting expectations
I thought Potts would have played better than what I’ve seen so far. Specifically, he has thrown most of his deep throws off his back foot, stared down receivers and has an occasional hitch in his throwing motion.

It's always wait til next year...
Potts is not a leader. He is a sulker. Was it not just two weeks ago that he was the reason for downfall of the season? Jokes were being spread about the guy not being able to hit a house with eggs for crying out loud. He comes into the KU game where Batch does a majority of the work and all of a sudden you’re predicting Heisman and Championships. I’m sorry but I don’t see that happeining with Potts. Championship is most likely to happen with Sheffield at QB, however I see the typical Tech season around the corner. Just like 2008, make a decent run and collapse at the end back into mediocrity.

I can believe ‘horn in our land’ being a horn fan living in Lubbock, as I am just the opposite. The biggest difference between us is that I do not go to a horn site and badmouth them regardless of their position. Nor do I feel ‘forced’ to cheer for the horns, even with a daughter going to UT. No, he (she?) is just like all other horn fans here in Austin. He says Tech is not a real rival to UT, but he will take every opportunity to speak badly about Tech. The BIGGEST thing i saw about sticks is his connection with the recievers. kind of what graham had with crabtree, morris, and britton last year. forget about stats…sticks seamed to be on the same page with his recievers. something stats will never tell!
