Boise State game????

Boise State will play ANYONE

Apparently Boise State is trying to do what they can to get respect... and apparently, no one wants to give it to them...

The deal they are offering seems pretty freakin' sweet too...

Bleymaier is making a nearly unheard of offer in college football scheduling – Boise will bring its popular, high-profile, top-10 team to any stadium in any town to play any big name team in America in 2011. And they don’t have to return the date in Idaho.

What do you guys think??? should Tech take them up on it? we've been criticized for our weak non-conference (as if our conference schedule wasn't hard enough) i'm not sure how good Boise really is... and if we don't have to go play on that STUPID blue field... gives me a headache every time i see it on tv... I'd be willing to test our home-field advantage against them...

Somehow we were both posting this at the same time...

It just so happens that Texas Tech has one open slot on it’s 2011 schedule, and September 3rd, the proposed date, is open.

To sweeten the deal, Boise has said that it will play any opponent on their field and not require a return. It is almost certain this game would be televised if a major conference opponent picked it up. So, if you were the Tech administration, would you pick up this game? Things to consider:

   1. First game of the season
   2. The next week is TCU away
   3. This is potentially the first year with a new starting QB
   4. You already have a WAC opponent (Nevada) on your schedule
   5. This would give you a 7th home game

Is the early exposure, extra revenue, etc. worth the risk? Discuss among yourselves.

The only problem I see with it is that its a new QB’s first year. Could spell trouble in their first game.

BBB team

First of all, I would love to get some of that blue action. But, the schedule that you linked to does not seem to be credible. When was the last time we had an open date before the start of BIG XII play? I wouldn’t trust that site. BTW… If you choke a smurf, what color does it turn?

Normally, we don’t have any breaks during the season. This season and last are anomalies. I think we would normally fill that 10/1 slot with our 4th non-conference game. Because there are 5 Saturdays in October in 2011, we either have a buy in week 1 or in week 5. Obviously, with the schedule 2 years out, much is subject to change.

Boise State's doing this...

…to improve their SoS. We’re already in one of the best conferences. We don’t need to improve our SoS.

Agree its not in our best interest.

I think a team like Utah, Houston, maybe a Big 10 or PAC 10 school would be more interested in something like this.

It would be fun to play them though.

Sure, why not. What do we have to lose? Besides, I think Boise will go back to being Boise in a year or so.

by Tech92 on Nov 7, 2009 5:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The 7th home game is great for a program. The only other way Tech gets that (without doing a home and home) is to schedule an FCS opponent. The FCS opponent definitely hurts our SoS. Also, you ever know what a program is going to be like 2 years out – injuries, players leaving, how well recruits pan out, coaching changes, etc. are all unknowns. I say do it. In theory, 2011 would be a “rebuilding year” because of the new QB, and 2012/2013 would be the championship year(s) for Tech. It is a huge gamble for Boise. A loss totally ruins them. Whereas Tech has a chance for redemption through conference play. Show some cajones. But, if you are going to roll the dice, do it in a year when you would otherwise not expect to go undefeated, just in case.

by NM99 on Nov 7, 2009 8:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

HECK NO!

What does Tech have to gain?? The only way they ever get a chance at a national championship is to go undefeated. If they finish the season undefeated in the Big 12 they are most certainly going to a championship game. They are already playing TCU who is always ranked and tough. Why make life tougher?

by fromcentex on Nov 7, 2009 8:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

BOY!

This is hard to decide. It would be great exposure, though. Who knows, it could lead to some similarly great match ups in future years. NM99 is right, it is a good year to do this. I would say, if Leach is willing, sign it up and just be ready as you can that year. We know the QB will be a good one, as Doege will be a Junior, Karem a Sophomore and Young , probably, a Redshirt Freshman. Any could be great, with Doege, by then, having the inside rail at the starting slot. Personally, I don’t think Boise could come close to containing Tech and with the improved recruiting at Tech, they could be even better than ever. If Tech does sign on for that matchup, a win against Boise, then TCU and the rest, could vault Tech into great position to make a serious run at a national title, new QB and all. Sooooo….. I say DO IT! Why not? You never know.

go for it!

I hate not being able to watch my team play, or watching them play cinderalla teams.

Not much to gain

As much as fun as I think this game would be, I don’t think there’s much to be gained for either team. I think Tech and BSU are similar in that they don’t get the respect they deserve. Both are teams that the pollsters love to hate. Sure both teams will get their obligatory top 10 rating as long as they’re undefeated only to get buried in the polls after one loss.

My point it that it’s a no win situation for both teams because the national response would be to chalk up the victory to the losing team being overrated all along.

I wish this was a joke.

This is a gimmick that builds on the belief that Boise State wants to play tougher opponents, but the big schools are too afraid to schedule them. This is simply a ploy to put focus on the school in 2009 for their current BCS run. I don’t see any schools falling into this public relations trap.

Boise State has everything to gain if they convince a major program to go along with this. They get the opportunity to beat a big team before coasting into an easy conference schedule. Their opponent has nothing to gain. Beating Boise State does nothing for your credibility (a 1-loss Boise would be farther off the national radar than a 6-0 Western Kentucky).

If you fall for this "little guy" charade and don’t do a home-home series you look like jerk. You also run the risk of pulling a Michigan (i.e. App State) or TAMU (i.e. Arkansas State).

The same goes for scheduling any FCS school. You risk your credibility for a potentially easy win.

My advice to Boise is to have their AD pickup the phone and keep this nonsense out of the papers. If their AD can’t put a schedule together he/she should be replaced. SoS is their biggest problem and it isn’t their fault that Oregon lost to Stanford. However, that sure did shoot a hole in their computer ranking.

I also don’t buy that this is a good opportunity for extra national exposure. You’re talking about a team in a conference that plays on a weeknight just to get regional TV coverage.

Bad idea for Tech

and that shouldn’t reflect poorly on Boise or Tech, either. Until the college football powers that be put together a system that doesn’t reward bad behavior (i.e. scheduling Pop Warner teams on your OOC slate), don’t be surprised when no one wants to go out of their way to play the best mid-major team in America. Least of all a team like Tech, that has its hands full playing a full slate of Big XII teams every damn year

Last year we played..

.. 2 FCS opponents and were still in a position to play in the national championship game. It wasn’t our SoS that hurt us, it was the blowout loss to OU.

I’d love for us to play Boise but in a bowl or something. Not regular season.

bad idea to play boise state

i think we have an amazing team but boise.. they are really good! extremely good!!! i would not be confident at allllllll to play to Boise state. they grow as a team when playing against conference teams.

No guts, no glory.

Fans: I have a question. Would you like to see this game, win or lose? I would. If they beat us, at least we got to see the matchup. They have been great, but we might be great also.

One question. What if they don’t find any takers? Their fans would be unbearable. At least if I were their fan and they got no response, I would be unbearable.

Perhaps I am a little insane, but I would be even more pleased if we played them twice and I got to see the Red Raiders on the blue turf.

Lakum

Unbearable Fans?

I have never actually met a real Boise State fan. They all live thousands of miles away. Who cares if they cry, there is no reason you would or even could hear it.

I am not saying there are not Boise State fans, I am just saying there is no reason anyone around here would have to listen to them whine. They live thousands of miles away.

Mr. mojavereject

Thank you for that piece of advice. You are exactly right. Lakum is at the bottom of the page. Therefore it is meaningless to sign it. From now on, I will sign something that has a meaning. (It really does seam silly to make statements and not sign them.) Thanks again.

Respectfully,
