Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

DTN Offseason Plans

I wasn't sure if this was deserving of its own post, but I figured why not.  I wanted to open up this to you guys, because DTN is as much yours as it is mine.  In any event, here are the things that I have on my agenda for the offseason.  Please feel free to comment on any one of these topics and if you would be able to help out with items 4 and 5 below:

1.  Michigan St. vs. Texas Tech Previews:  these will start next week.

2.  First Annual DTN Awards:  After bowl game, we'll have the first annual, DTN Awards, which will be an opportunity for you guys to nominate, comment and vote on who you think the season-long MVP's for various positions and any awards that you might suggest.

3.  All-Mike Leach Team:  This project will probably start after the DTN Awards, and we'll take nominations, comments and then vote on each position.  And as a heads-up, we'll be doing quarterback last.

4.  T-shirt Project:  I've promised and discussed this for some time, but it's going to happen this offseason.  Some time after the bowl game, but before the Red-Black Spring game, I'll be asking you guys for help with designs and I'll post some alternate logos that I have, but for those who are graphic artists, I'll certainly encourage you guys to post your own designs.  I'll also need help with someone who can print the t-shirts.  This may be something that I'll have to buy a bunch and then send them out each week.  I'm also aware of websites like Spreadshirt or other t-shirt sites, but I hate the idea of charging $20 + shipping for a stinking t-shirt.  I'd like to keep the costs as low as possible, I don't want this to be a money-making opportunity for me, but a community-opportunity.

5.  DTN Meet and Greets:  I've talked about trying to get together this year, but there were some personal reasons why I didn't get to attend as many games as I'd like.  I figure we just need to set a date and stick to it.  I like the idea of a tailgate, and perhaps we can get volunteers, freebies, sponsors, etc.  We need to make this a real event as I'd love to sit down and meet as many of you as possible.  Right now, I'm thinking that we can do two events.  I'd love to meet during the spring game, which is a great event for those of you who have never been, and a football game, probably early in the season.  I'm thinking that we might be able to do a non-conference game in the hopes that I might be able to get a block of tickets so that we can all sit together.  Hopefully the folks at the athletic department will be receptive to this type of event.  If you want to volunteer or have specific questions or comments about sponsorship or volunteering, then email me:  doubletnation AT gmail DOT com.

6.  Anything Else:  Feel free to post your own ideas and thoughts about what you might like to see during the offseason.  I'd also mention that if someone has an idea about a particular subject, perhaps you could start a FanPost series, like starting a community poll to rank the recruits after February signing date, or anything else.  I think the FanPosts have been great recently and we're starting to see the FanPosts that have "words words words words words words" to meet the 75 word minimum slowly disappear.

If you don't have 75 words worth of comment on the Raiders.

You shouldn’t be posting a Fan Post. On the other hand diarhea of the keyboard gets old too. Do I really have a point? I think everyone knows the answer to that.

This sounds like a great idea!!

1. Obviously…
2. Well discussed subject.
3. I can’t wait for this. An All Leach Team is going to weed out the men from the boys as far as player knowledge. I’ll probably be weeded out myself. Ha!
4. Sweetness. I have some ideas ready to go. I almost consider this my personal baby.
5. The spring game works for me. I can pull vacation for that right now if need be.

How about all Tech Team, or All Tech Team by decade?

I would like to see where Gabriel Rivera, and James Gray come out in that.

5.

We’ve been talking about this for a long time, but I owe you a beer or twelve. I’ll probably be back in Dallas (permanently) by July.

Go register. Or else.

looking forward to it

2. Great idea. Excited to see some creative awards.

3. Very excited about this. One idea I had was to go position by position and devote a certain amount of time to each one. Examples below:
DB’s = 2 days
DL = 2-3 days
OL = 2-3 days
Receivers = 3-4 days
This would give everyone ample time to research and offer their opinion on certain players. Once the time is up and the discussions are complete, we have a vote.

Unfortunately I’m able to come up with ideas that I have no solution for executing. The only solution I can offer on this is maybe a fanpost with a timeframe???

2. Love the idea of DTN awards. Real curious to see what folks come up with.
3. All Mike Leach Team – Should be interesting to see how this turns out.
4. I will gladly contribute. I use AutoCAD daily so maybe I can put some designs together once we narrow it down to a couple of ideas.
5. Tailgate in Spring and Non-conference game would be blast. I’m sure others such as myself can provide smoker pits.
6. Might be fun to have a DTN poll throughout the season. Sort of like the AP. We could also have a preseason poll. I like the idea of a college pick’em for the weeks games. Lastly, I think it would be cool to see the stadium construction progress in the offseason. Maybe we could see a 60 day progression with pictures by someone who is a DTN member in Lubbock. I’m really excited about the improvements to this stadium as you can probably tell.

2. Awesome idea!
3. Love it… the fanpost was great, I can’t wait till a full blown discussion and voting system is put in place.
4. I’m and engineer = not creative. You can count me in for buying whatever y’all come up with though.
5. You read my mind on the spring game. And and early game would be cool too.
6. I like Raider1992’s idea of a poll, though I’m not sure if SBN has any tools you can use for that. I think I remember you guys all doing an organized fantasy football league on some site… I want in on that next season and maybe we can have weekly leader updates :). I guess both of those are next season and not really offseason stuff. Another fun idea might be to have a bowl pick-em as someone mentioned in an earlier fanpost… again I’m not sure if SBN has the proper tools, but that is something we could do in the next week or so.

1.) Cant wait for the Bowl Game. I can’t attend due other obligations the day before but I am planning on throw a scarlet and black party that day in my backyard!
4.) Love the t shirt idea. I will buy a shirt for sure.
5.) I’ve never been to a spring game but have wanted to go for many years. This might be the year

Seth you are the man and all of these things sound awesome. I’d love a DTN tailgate. We can all mail in checks to Seth or someone and have a huge awesome tailgate. I’m writing my 50 dollar check right now.

And for the dtn awards can we do a best poster category and put up a vote. maybe take the top ten posters in number of comments or something. I’ll withdrawal my name from consideration so the outcome isn’t known.

On the shirts . . .

You probably already know this, but if not, Texas Tech is extremely litigious when it comes to using any sort of trademark, and that does include the mere words Texas Tech University. You’d have to use the accepted brands of Tech in any sort of design while using a licensed marketer or completely scrub the entire design of anything relating to Tech. Frankly, I’m a bit surprised you haven’t already been contacted about this site’s logo.

Outerware USA used to be licensed and might still be, and the owner is easy to get along with.

by Chad_ on Dec 10, 2009 5:44 PM CST reply actions

the site doesn’t actually have the double t logo or any other tech logo other than maybe the use of a double t jpeg or pic in a post. but espn uses those all the time along with every other sports web page. I doubt they are all paying every time.

Difference between fair use and commercial use.

by kayakyakr on Dec 10, 2009 11:37 PM CST up reply actions

It has the use of the Masked Rider, which is a registered trademark of Texas Tech. ESPN and other online sports cites have agreements in place with, in this case, the NCAA to reproduce logos, not to mention fair use as mentioned by ‘kayakyakr.’

But that wasn’t the crux of my comment. I just wanted to point out that Seth better be very careful in accepting/designing any sort of logo design for whatever t-shirt he wishes to reproduce. As written above, Tech is extremely protective of its trademarks for even the most benign of uses, even in instances where there is no profit or money exchanging hands. I’d hate to see something well meaning done and then read about a lawsuit or a legal letter sent out over it.

by Chad_ on Dec 11, 2009 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not a trademark

or patent attorney, heck, I didn’t even have to study this stuff to take the bar exam, but when I had the DTN logo designed, I specifically asked them that they not utilize any official or trademarked images of Texas Tech. The masked rider that they created was one that they made on their own. Again, this isn’t my area of law, but I can’t imagine that Texas Tech or the NCAA would have the right stop me from selling merchandise because it has a guy riding a horse with a cape. They cannot trademark every potential logo with that type of depiction, just like the Atlanta Braves cannot trademark every depiction of a tomahawk and then claim it’s trademark infringement.

I’d also add that the site does make money, in fact I make some money, so there’s also the thought that I know the athletic department has known about this website for quite some time, maybe a year and a half, and have not raised any objection to the logos that I currently use, which again, are something I paid for personally.

Even if the NCAA does force me to stop selling the actual logo, they don’t own the rights to “Double-T Nation” and I have a number of logos that could be used that don’t have the horse and rider on it.

I’d also add that I just want to break even on the deal. I want to “charge” folks the cost to me for the shirt and the shipping. Nothing more than to just break even on the deal.

As an aside, are you an attorney and if so, do you specialize in this type of law?

Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation

by Seth C on Dec 12, 2009 5:55 AM CST up reply actions

Tech doesn't own the use of every image with a black horse on it ....

There’s nothing wrong with DTN’s logo, it’s an original work, and actually by their use, they have acquired trademark protection on it.

http://www.texastech.com/licensing/text-licensing.html

There is a list of all registered Tech trademarks. None of them describe the logo DTN uses.

I know I adminned the Bowl Pick'em last winter

But I’ve got too much on my plate to deal with it this year, so if someone were to pick that particular torch up, I would appreciate it.
