Recruiting on the High Seas :: DT Donald Langley

It's been a while since I've done this, in part because I've been lazy, but the other part is that most, if not all of the prior commitments happened quite some time ago (and yes, I need to update the sidebar, I've been lazy).  Texas Tech received a commitment from DT Donald Langley from Copiah-Lincoln Community College (pcrawttu was first with the FanPost).  Let's get to it.

The Measurables:

Donald Langley
Position: DT
Rivals Profile
Scout Profile
ESPN Profile 70 Grade
Ht: 6'2"
Wt: 295 lbs
Forty: NA
JUCO: Copiah-Lincoln CC (Wesson, MS)

The Player Speaks:

LAJ's Don Williams spoke with Langley, who will be visiting Arkansas this weekend, and will be making his decision next Wednesday, when certain JUCO players may sign a letter of intent:

"Texas Tech has a great family atmosphere, like a brotherhood," said Langley, who visited campus during Halloween weekend for the Tech-Kansas game. "It felt like the coaches had your best interests at heart and genuinely cared about you."

Langley was originally a signee with Tennessee, but after Phil Fulmer left, so did Langley and I thought this was interesting:

Langley said the Tennessee staff denied his request for a scholarship release, forcing him to transfer to a lower-division school or a junior college before returning to Division I. This season at Copiah-Lincoln, he was named to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges all-state team.

He said Tech assistant coach Brian Mitchell contacted him after he left Tennessee.

"When I got to Copiah-Lincoln, luckily for me I kept (Mitchell’s) number," Langley said. "I said, ‘Check me out. Hopefully, the interest is still there.’ He got a hold of me since mid-season, and it’s been all love ever since. Me and coach Mitchell have a great relationship. I hope to do great things with me, coach Mitchell, coach Ruff (McNeill) and coach (Mike) Leach."

The Scouting Report:

Since all of the services are essentially under a pay-wall, the days of getting a free scouting report are long gone.

Here’s the #1 thing about this recruit: He’s due for a mid-semester arrival. This means that he’s going to go through spring ball for us and that will make the world of difference in his 2 years to play 2.

We should have a fair number of early enrollees. I know Beau Carpenter will be at TTU in January, as will Langley. There’s a JUCO DE that we’re recruiting as well and are in a battle against that same Arkansas team for his services.

I didn't realize Carpenter was going to be here that early.....

That should help us out a lot…

Scott Smith

is his name. I don’t subscribe to any paying sites and ran across the DE’s name that is being recruited by Arkansas also. So if you were trying to avoid a conflict of interest kayakyakr, kudos.

Just a quick question

Just looking at our “potential” signees and I notice that both of our WR recruits are from Florida, and whilst that’s great that we are recruiting in different states, I wonder why we haven’t had any Texas recruits at this position? I know that you recruit for your needs, and maybe we don’t need any more WR’s but it just seems a bit odd to me that we have not recruited any within Texas. I know that we are on the trail of a number of recruits notably Darius White, which would be a great addition (I personally don’t think we’ll get him), but others seemed to slip away to other schools, and on the back of Crabs, I thought we would start to get elite talent at that position, it just seems like we aren’t taking advantage of it, and I know I am not on the inside of the program and don’t know the inner workings of TTU recruiting, but just seems odd, to me anyway.
Thoughts?

dedfisher posted a thought of his recently on TortillaRetort that deals with the same question. Basically he was wondering if we had neglected WR recruiting in favor of other positions (linemen) in recent years.

Linemen are more important than skill positions, I believe. Especially in our scheme. Plus we’re pretty loaded at wideout right now.

I think part of the problem was that in

in 2007 the class was Rashad Hawk, Tramain Swindall, Jacoby Franks and Detron Lewis. This list doesn’t include guys like Adam James and Lyle Leong who greyshirted that year. That’s 6 receivers just right there. The 2008 class was relatively small, Austin Zouzalik and Cornelius Douglas, and now you’re up to 8 receivers that were in the fold (also doesn’t include Alexander Torres, who would have been in the Zouzalik and Douglas class).

The 2009 class was actually pretty big in terms of volume with the following signees: Eric Ward (early enroller), E.J. Celestie, Aaron Fisher and Derrick Mays. Perhaps the problem may be that none of these guys are game-breakers, like Crabtree, but I think you could also make the argument that Ward still has the physical gifts to be special, and Corker and Boone are also that highly ranked and have that potential. We also don’t know a thing about Celestie, Fisher or Mays other than this group was a fairly talented group, and now they’ve had a year to mature, get stronger and learn the system.

I should

also add that last year, Ruffin McNeill made the statement that he wants to recruit what amounts to a team each year. If you look at the 2009 recruiting class, the coaching staff accomplished this and they’ve done it again this year (I was going to write at some point about how the balance of the recruiting the past two years will truly benefit this team).

I have read some posts on other threads that give impression that White is over rated.

I really believe that wr recruiting has not dropped as much as development has dropped — that could reflect recruiting I suppose. I am going to hold back because we have a set of discussions planned for this.

TechFirst has an interesting point, we are recruiting better on defense, is that at cost to the offense ? What are the factors that lead to good recruits on offense and good recruits on defense ? Interesting discussion in that also.

by TallMike on Dec 11, 2009 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

IMO the 2 florida wr recruits qualify as elite talent. If you haven’t seen Boone’s highlight video, the kid is ridiculous. He’s prob won’t be a crabtree but he looks to have huge potential. We also have a lot of young depth and talent at the wr position ie. Zou, Eric Ward, Jacoby Franks, etc. I don’t think it’s that we’re not recruiting enough wr’s but more of us trying to build a more balanced team from the bottom up with good o-line, d-line, and DB recruits. We always hear about how unstoppable we would be if we had a top 25 defense to go along with the air-raid. This could be the recruiting class that gets us there…we will see. That aside, it might be the best day of my life to see Darius White wearing a Tech hat on signing day.

QB's to Receivers......

It seems we do quit well with TX boys who are former QB’s and then transition to receivers for us. No I know we don’t have that this year but I do think TTech hard after some top TX guys and just did get them. Who knows maybe we can flip White @ the end, because to be a top recruit he has taken a long time to deceide. Ususally, ut, ou, or atm has these guys locked up by now. Anyway, also we have a lot of depth @ receiver and maybe that scared a few TX guys to other places like Bu and uh. Overall, TTech has done great! I really like our D players—speed and size! by techgolf44 on Dec 11, 2009 9:27 AM CST reply actions

QB's are generally real talented, and can play other positions....

When there are, lets say 70 college-caliber qb’s in TX in any given year, I think this works to Tech’s advantage. For example, UT will get the big stud (Gilbert), atm, Ou, and the rest will get the number 2, and 3, and 4 guys. That leaves a lot of talented qb’s out there for Tech to choose from and then switch positions, or whatever we want to do with them. What about the 12th best qb in TX, I’d be willing to bet that Garret Gilbert is not THAT much better than the 12th best qb in TX.

Another Orphan Recruit From JC !!

Well, a pattern seems to be developing…at least the result of good relationship developed by TTU recruiters.

It smacks of a tactic used by the NFL’s Oakland Raiders for a number of years which led to some of their better years of pro football.

Darius White

Anyone have any info on the possibilities of him ending up a Red Raider? He looks like a great receiver that could do some great things in Lubbock.

I can't answer your question

But something that brings a smile to my face is simply the fact that Tech is in the contention for this guy. Almost every other school he is considering is a top D-1 school. For Tech to have increased in status to that level is exciting.

by Boarder on Dec 11, 2009 11:18 AM CST up reply actions

I will smile

when we get to a level where these guys do more than consider us and choose us. It’s frustrating to me that we are only considered. Look what we did for Crabtree. I understand your thought process but just being in consideration isn’t good enough for me. Until we are the choice for guys like this I won’t be smiling. Lots of hard work ahead for the captain…

DE

I think we are still in the running for the DE that played a Butler Co. Juco in Kansas. He went to Cal 1st and then transferred to BuCo Juco, didn’t like Cal. He was originally from Hawaii. He had like 24 sacks at Butler and will fit nicely in Howard’s or Sharpe’s spot. I am sure he step right in although those two guys will require someone with big shoes to take over their positions. I am willing to bet he will become a Red Raider also. This guy is like 6’6" and 260. Good things come from BuCo Juco.
